Senior Maidservant Xu, are your legs feeling better?

My arthritic legs have their good and bad days. They’re fine.

Thank you for your concern, Princess Consort.

How many times have I already told you?

You and my mother may have had a servant-mistress relationship, but in reality, you were more like sisters.

From now on, don’t call yourself a servant in front of me.

Yes, Princess Consort.

Sit down and talk, Senior Maidservant Xu.

Senior Maidservant Xu, have you realized that Jin’er has been in low spirits ever since we returned?

It’s as if she’s become someone else.

I feel the same way.

This lass, Jin’er, use to chatter non-stop,

but now she’s become extremely quiet.

What’s the matter? Is Your Highness afraid she has drifted apart from you?

After my kidnapping in Huizhou, she and I were separated for a while.

When we were reunited, she’d already turned into a different person.

Perhaps... after having Yu Xiu by my side,

I’ve favored Yu Xiu over her?

Your Highness, you’re overthinking.

Perhaps that girl went through something

after being separated from Your Highness.

The relationship between Jin’er and me is similar to your relationship with my mother.

She has been by my side ever since I was a child and has labored mentally and striven to do her best.

She’d also suffered quite a bit previously.

But I will never forget her kindness.

She has also reached the age of marriage.

I will choose a good husband for her,

so that she can finally have a place to call home.

[Juxian Tavern]

Sirs, this way, please. Here.

Winter will soon be here.

The soldiers’ winter clothes...

- Please. - ...are almost ready.

They still have to be distributed to the various regions.

I’m going to be so busy my feet will hardly touch the ground.

- Elder Brother, this lowly subordinate will attest to the matter. - Is this room empty? (Elder Brother – not biological, but from the same clan)

This way!

Noble guests, what would you like to order?

What did the customers next door order?

The customers next door?

What they ordered was not cheap.

Do I look poor to you?

Look at what I’m saying. Don’t worry.

I’ll give you the exact same dishes the next-door customers ordered.

The exact same. Please wait a moment, please wait.

General, this... How much will we have to spend?

Do I look poor to you, too?

Delicious.

If not for this thickened fish snout soup,

I wouldn’t have deemed it worth my while to come all the way here.

I knew you like thickened fish snout soup, Regional Minister Xie.

That is why I told the tavern to prepare it for you in advance.

I wonder what is so marvelous about this thickened fish snout soup?

Let me tell you.

This thickened fish snout soup requires the snouts of 100 live carp.

It is accompanied by shiitake mushrooms, sliced bamboo shoots, and high-quality pork.

It is then simmered for four hours.

How could it not be delicious when it is cooked in this way?

I will have to be disrespectful here and say

even the reigning emperor

cannot eat such a delicacy.

Compared to when my Xie Clan was prosperous and flourishing,

this is nothing.

The people only see the emperor and empress indulging in the world’s finest culinary delicacies.

How would they know that

it is us noble families who are the ones living comfortably and with no worries?

That’s right. That’s right.

Regional Minsiter Xie,

you have helped me a great deal in regards to the winter clothing.

You are busy with official business so gold, silver, and valuables probably do not appeal to you.

I’ve constructed a small court for you near the Memorial Arch in the eastern market.

Just enjoy the benefits of the land taxes given to you by us fine gentlemen.

I’ll have to thank you all for the trouble, then.

The current empress is a member of our Xie family.

- General. - What are you doing?

Now is the perfect time for our Xie Clan to make a comeback and change our fortunes.

They were caught red-handed! We could’ve arrested them!

General, he is the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Revenue.

His Highness warned us repeatedly about this person before we departed. We must be very cautious.

A few days ago, the imperial palace sent out news

they are looking for more Xie clansmen to enter the palace as court officials.

When that time comes, all of you will be blessed

- for your trouble. - What about the food?

Do I have that kind of money?

Why did I hear that your shoulder injury was acting up again?

I suddenly felt a bit of a stabbing pain at the injury site.

It’s probably because the weather is snowy, wet, and cold.

But it’s not serious.

Who was being loudmouthed and told you about it?

I’m glad it’s not serious.

I specifically told the imperial physician to prescribe some pain relieving medicine for you.

Also, here.

This is an ointment that can fade scarring.

Remember to apply it every day.

I don’t want my Yu Xiu to get married with scars.

Your Highness, what are you saying.

Who says that I’m marrying?

I’m going to stay by Your Highness’s side. I won’t marry anyone.

So you say?

Then if General Song marries another girl in the future,

you’d better not cry.

Princess Consort! You’re making fun of me again.

Princess Consort, you may not know.

That General Song really misses Older Sister Yu Xiu.

Earlier, he even delivered the medicine for Older Sister Yu Xiu.

It turns out there’s someone more concerned about you than I am.

Your hair is so messy.

How can you go see him like this?

General Song gave them to me outside. He did not come in.

That’s interesting.

When did General Song turn into a closed gourd? (Idiom – a taciturn person)

He’s very concerned for you yet he passed your door without entering?

Princess Consort, look at that flower.

General Song gifted that as well.

He also specifically told me to put it in a sunny area.

He also said that he specially brought it back from the Imperial Mausoleum.

I planted a bunch of orchids in the garden at the Imperial Mausoleum.

General Song, if it is convenient for you,

go see them on my behalf.

If they’re still alive, please help me water them

and take care of them.

It sounds like Her Highness is much better.

But why do I hear a trace of desolation in the sound of the qin? (Qin – a plucked seven-string Chinese musical instrument)

It takes 100 days to recover from a very serious injury,

let alone after heart-break.

Yes.

Did the trip go smoothly?

It was as you said. Someone followed us.

Without our Ningshuo Army’s protection,

I’m afraid the Prince of Anping would have more likely been in a disaster rather than a blessing.

Wang Lin was cunning enough,

yet he was defeated by the empress dowager.

Zilu was defeated and died. Zitan, himself, asked to go to the Imperial Mausoleum.

In the end, it wasn’t any better than cutting weeds and digging up roots.

Don’t worry. I have already arranged everything.

Prince, the Prince of Anping has some strong preconceived ideas about you.

You want to protect him at all costs, but he may not appreciate your kindness.

I don’t need his appreciation.

If it hadn’t been for his sacrifice,

my A’Wu, I’m afraid, would already be gone by now.

I owe him.

Yes.

Horses!

Where are the horses?

Dismount!

Let’s go! Go! [City Post Station]

(Relay Station – a place where riders could rest, post and replace their horses for fresh ones)

[City Post Station]

[Prince Manor]

Prince!

Hulan’s Envoy escort has entered the capital.

Hu Yeqi is among them.

I have fought him quite a few times.

As soon as I saw his face, I knew that he didn’t have any good intentions!

He was clamoring in front of the city gate!

Just put me in Ningshuo, I’ll slice him with a knife.

You also know yourself. We are here in the capital, not in Ningshuo.

So they can set their feet on our territory and act wildly!

He is bringing tributes here as a guest.

The weasel goes to pay his respects to the hen.

I know they mean no good.

However, in regard to what motives they may have,

we’ll only know when we go to court in a few days.

I’ll skin those weasels coming in a few days.

I’ll do it with you.

Your Highness!

Your Highness.

Some Hulan people came and are at the door.

- I’ll go pull out their hair right now! - They are guests from afar!

Go on.

They say they are here to especially see Princess Consort.

They want to see me?

This envoy from Hulan is too arrogant.

In Huizhou, they kidnapped our princess consort.

Now, they even dare to come to our manor.

Princess Consort, if I had a say,

I’d have the guards chase them away.

Daring to come to Prince Yuzhang’s manor, they are very courageous.

Help me change.

Yes.

- A’Yu. - Here.

Ask His Highness to see the guest along with me.

Yes.

Hulan Envoy.

What important matters require you to come here so late?

I am here to see Princess Consort,

not to see anyone else.

Hulan Envoy has come from afar,

so His Highness will naturally treat you with respect.

However, could it be that you have forgotten

that a guest should suit the convenience of his host?

I, Hulan Envoy Hu Yeqi,

greet Prince Yuzhang.

So it’s General Hu Yeqi.

We’re old acquaintances now. No need to be so courteous.

Exactly. We’re old acquaintances.

How many times... did we defeat you?

Now, you’ve come as a guest.

Our Prince Yuzhang Manor

does not keep rude guests.

Xiao Qi! Is this how your manor treats its guests?

You must rejoice that we’re not on a battlefield.

Otherwise, I would not be this polite toward you.

It’s so late yet you still want to see me,

what is it?

Greetings to Princess Consort Yuzhang.

I came here this time on the orders of Prince Zhen

to offer a present to Princess Consort Yuzhang.

What is this?

It is a type of exotic flower that grows on Mount Huo in Hulan.

It does not die in the snow or succumb to frost.

It blooms once every hundred years.

It’s a sacred plant able to cure wounds and detoxify.

Your Prince could really bear to gift it?

Our Prince said that Princess Consort Yuzhang is a remarkable woman.

Only she deserves this worldly exotic flower.

This is too valuable.

Tell your prince that I appreciate his kindness.

Come.

Tell your prince that we have accepted his present.

Thank him on my behalf.

General Song, walk the guest out.

Rejecting me time and time again,

are you looking down on me?

If you want me not to look down on you,

have a dignified battle with Xiao Qi on the battlefield

instead of humiliating a woman here.

What kind of revenge is this?

Older Sister Wanru gifted me this phoenix hairpin.

The black pearl on it is the only one in the world.

I took off this hairpin to stab Helan Zhen.

After being defeated, he disappeared.

Now, this hairpin has reappeared.

It seems Helan Zhen is using this veiled method to apologize.

But his hatred towards Xiao Qi still persists.

And that hatred has piled up due to his hand being cut off.

How could he possibly leave the matter like that so easily?

Why exactly did Helan Zhen come this time?

Hulan and our Great Cheng have been fighting each other for many years.

This time, Helan Zhen entered the capital conspicuously.

His objective is surely not that simple.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Don’t worry, I’ll always be here.

Prince Helan, Helan Zhen, under the Hulan King’s orders,

welcomes the new emperor’s reign.

We wish to be in alliance with you and be friends.

We wish you long life for a thousand years.

Please rise.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Hu Yeqi, please give the list.

Yes.

You are kind, Prince.

Coming here, I still have another matter

that I hope you will help me accomplish.

Prince, speak freely.

Hulan and Great Cheng being friends,

we wish to have a marriage alliance

with my brother Helan Tuo

marrying a princess from Great Cheng.

This...

Prince Helan didn’t know

I have just ascended to the throne and have yet to bear any children.

The late emperor also only had three princes, no princesses.

This marriage alliance...

Your Majesty, there is no need to worry.

Your Majesty, we of course know you don’t have a princess.

But we also know that Great Cheng is filled with great women.

For example, the Princess Consort Yuzhang,

even in Hulan, she is well known.

If you intend so,

you can choose a great woman and make her a princess

and make a marriage alliance with us.

This way, Hulan and Great Cheng will become in-laws.

To express our sincerity, we will move our soldiers back 50 Li.

During this time, we will not start any wars.

These will be the wedding gifts upon marrying Great Cheng’s princess.

Very well.

You have come a long way to propose marriage. The sincerity in that can be seen.

My Great Cheng has no reason to reject it.

Rest assured.

I will definitely choose a beauty

of first-class status and family background.

Now, since

you have come from afar,

over many thousands of Li,

in a rush and tired manner,

relay my order!

Tomorrow night, I will host a feast

to welcome the Prince of Hulan.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Thank you for the fulfillment, Your Majesty.

I also have another wish.

Please go ahead.

I once had some misunderstandings with Princess Consort Yuzhang.

I want to clear them up with the princess consort in person.

I don’t know if you can also invite Princess Consort Yuzhang to come tomorrow night.

You are saying a Hulan man entered the Yuzhang Manor last night?

Yes.

Interesting. Very interesting!

I do not understand.

Aren’t the Hulans and Prince Yuzhang enemies?

Princess Consort Yuzhang was kidnapped in Huizhou.

They have argued much.

No matter how hard I think, I can’t come up with a plan.

Nanny, did you forget? Although we do not know,

there is someone at Prince Yuzhang’s manor who does know.

Is Your Majesty talking about Su Jin’er?

Tomorrow, send someone to Prince Yuzhang’s manor to deliver a message.

Find her and ask about it.

- Don’t let it slip. - Yes.

Your Majesty, I heard

that the Hulan Prince sent someone to Prince Yuzhang’s manor.

Such a lack of concealment.

Those who pay attention to Prince Yuzhang’s manor should all know by now then.

This Hulan Prince, Helan Zhen,

hates Prince Yuzhang, Xiao Qi, for killing his mother

and angered for cutting off his hand.

That’s great.

He came at just the right time.

[Prince Manor]

Older Sister Jin’er!

Older Sister Jin’er?

Older Sister Yu Xiu, Princess Consort told you to rest a few more days.

Why have you started working again?

I am a workaholic at birth.

Laying in bed for days, I felt uncomfortable all over.

This work is not heavy anyway so I did it.

Then have you seen Older Sister Jin’er?

She just went to the smaller kitchen to prepare medicinal soup for Her Highness.

What is it?

A lady came and is waiting outside the manor, saying that she is Jin’er’s younger cousin and has an urgent matter.

Then I’ll go to the kitchen to look for her.

Be careful.

Younger cousin?

Her Highness said that Jin’er has been an orphan since she was young and was raised in her manor.

Where did this younger cousin come from?

- You were looking for me? - Yes, please come with me.

Her Majesty sending you to see me,

is it because Third Prince has sent a letter?

It is Her Majesty who sent me to come and see you.

She wants to know

why those Hulan people suddenly came to Prince Yuzhang’s manor.

What happened?

Did Third Prince not send any letters?

Do you still not understand?

Everything that happens at Prince Yuzhang’s manor relates to Third Prince.

If you can’t report every little thing to the empress,

then in the future, the empress will for sure not help you.

I will tell you!

As long as it is for Third Prince,

I am willing to do anything.

You have just finished court affairs, why have you come?

Your Majesty, do you have something on your mind?

This Prince Helan, he really is restless.

He just met me and he already gave me a hard problem.

Back then, it was this person who kidnapped A’Wu

and created trouble in Ningshuo.

Today at court,

I said I would host a feast to welcome him.

He actually mentioned A’Wu twice in front of all the officials.

He also wants A’Wu to come.

This... Where would Prince and Princess Consort Yuzhang’s face be?

That’s right.

A woman’s reputation is the most important.

A’Wu is also my younger cousin.

If this had happened in the past with my temper from before,

I would have certainly chased him out of the capital immediately and not allowed him back for life!

I am the emperor right now.

Being the crown prince all these years,

many thought I wasn’t capable and come to see my failures.

I am now understanding the late emperor’s hardships more and more.

As an emperor, I cannot act recklessly.

Even more, I have to endure the hardships.

Wanru,

do you understand everything that I’ve said to you?

I understand.

I feel your pain.

If this matter is causing you to be annoyed, I have a thought.

I am not sure if it will work.

You have an idea? Hurry and tell me.

Why don’t you delay the feast a few days?

This way you can invite all the high-status families to come with their daughters.

Firstly, we can choose a princess from these girls

and both he and you can have a look.

Secondly, at the feast,

Princess Consort Yuzhang won’t stand out as much.

It will also allow all the Hulan people

to see how elegant and charming our Great Cheng’s girls are.

Go. Ask Prince Yuzhang to come to my imperial study.

I have things to discuss with him.

Yes, Your Majesty.

[Yanzheng Residence]

[Yanzheng Residence]

Maintain a lookout.

General, outside, there seem to be people.

General!

This...

Go.

Prince Yuzhang, you are really amazing.

You can use ways to get so much money

from these old scholars by using a feast.

In this way, the shortage of military funds will finally have an assured source.

How about this, I will give you 5,000 more gold taels.

Your Majesty, didn’t Prime Minister say that there is no more money in our treasury?

If I say I have money, then I have money.

Five thousand taels it is.

This way my soldiers can have a good winter.

The soldiers and I thank Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, perhaps you would like to put up another imperial notice

to make the donation public.

This way, even if others know about this money,

in the end, it will still remain in the capital.

The people will speak highly of this.

This then would be a win-win situation.

This is a great way.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Also, another matter I have finished discussing with the officials,

is we’ve chosen the princess candidate for this marriage.

It is the granddaughter of the Gu family, Gu Caiwei.

This time, since the Hulans have come to the capital,

I know that you and Princess Consort Yuzhang have suffered.

But you also know what the people have been through in these years,

I also hope that the empire and its people will have peace.

In a few days, I hope you will consider the larger result

and not break the peace with the Hulan people.

I will obey.

Your Highness.

This account book has the transactions between Xie Shouzheng and those people.

Prince, as you told me and Hu Yao,

we had been spying on him for a few days, then we snuck into his private home.

There must be something we thought, so as expected, we found this...Zhao Zaizhong.

[Zhao Zaizhong, at the restaurant...] [Zheng Jiangqi, Left General Wuwei of the Right... ]

Tell Hu Yao to keep a close eye on this Xie Shouzheng.

Rest assured, Your Highness.

Every person in this account book has a vast background.

But tomorrow, I will give this account book to the emperor

and ask for his opinion.

Sure, then let’s talk about it after you see the emperor. I’ll go meet with Hu Yao.

Go.

Be extra careful.

[Zheng Jiangqi, Left General Wuwei of the Right...]

[Song Huai’en]

- Ningshuo Warriors! - Here!

For Great Cheng,

- Kill! - Kill! Kill!

From now on, the Ningshuo Army can finally have their glory.

My Lord, quickly run.

Run! Run.

Prince.

[Song Huai’en]

Today, A’Yu told me

that once this kind of weather occurs

Yu Xiu’s injury will hurt so much she cannot sleep.

That’s right. Every time it gets cold, areas of severe injury where nerves were damaged

will be painful as if ants are biting.

It is truly unbearable.

It is because of me that she has such a lingering chronic pain.

Yu Xiu, a fine lady, risked her life to save you.

In the future, we must treat her very well.

Oh! Huai’en comes often to see her these days.

If he is not gifting flowers, then he is gifting medicine.

Why do I think that the two of them seem to like each other?

Say, do you think Huai’en could be the one for Yu Xiu?
