Merry Christmas, everyone and welcome

to a very special edition of the Hollywood Christmas Parade.

- Although we're not actually on the parade route this year,

Santa and his elves are still on their way

to kick off the holiday season.

- That's right and it's the very best moments

of the Hollywood Christmas Parade.

- Yes, and we will relive the best marching bands,

balloons, horses, and a sleigh full of surprises.

It's going to be amazing!

(horn playing) (audience applauding)

So, let's get this party started!

- Merry Christmas to everybody watching at home.

As you can see, the crowd is very excited

about the start of tonight's Christmas concert.

- Happy holidays, everyone.

- [Laura] So now, let's take a look back

at the best of The Hollywood Christmas Parade.

And we're proud to say,

that the The Hollywood Christmas Parade

supports the Marine Toys for Tots, especially this year.

So now, check out the Marine Corps Honor Color Guard

leading Marine Band San Diego.

to have a Grand Marshall in the parade,

riding down the Walk of Fame.

- But this year, we don't have a Grand Marshall.

We have a whole bunch of them, Laura.

- We do.

Here comes our Grand Marshall.

It's the one and only Olivia Newton-John.

- That's a beautiful, beautiful certificate.

Look at that. Thank you, thank you so much.

- It's such an honor to be here with my family.

It happens to be my wife and I's anniversary.

- You know, we've really had some top recording artists

and performers over the years.

- We sure have.

- [Laura] Like this one from India Arie.

- So Eric, what is a parade without balloons?

Not The Hollywood Christmas Parade, that's for sure.

- Here's our favorites,

a fan favorite in previous years, as well.

(Christmas music)

Usually, when I see a flock of angry birds, I run for cover,

but not tonight.

I think we're safe. Right, Laura?

- [Laura] Yeah, I think so, Eric.

The Angry Birds are video game superstars

and it's a very challenging game, as I've discovered.

Now, here's a festive feline,

helping us ring in the holiday season.

- [Erik] It's Santa Garfield.

- [Laura] Everyone's favorite mystery-solving

Great Dane, Scooby Doo.

- [Erik] Scooby and his gang are celebrating 45 years

of monsters, mysteries, and, of course, Scooby snacks.

- Our next hero fights for truth,

justice, and the American way.

Marching bands are a staple of parades everywhere

and that definitely goes for The Hollywood Christmas Parade.

- Yes, and every year we've had the most incredible bands

from all over the country, like this one

from Fayetteville, Georgia.

- Mark Twain would quip, "The two most important days

in your life are the day you are born

and the day you understand why.

The Hollywood Christmas Parade reminds us of the latter

by reminding us to help others

because it brings meaning and purpose to our lives.

Although we are skipin' some of the hoopla this year,

we are not missin' the fun or the love felt

by all who participate.

So, happy holidays, my friends

and to celebrate, let me offer a very special treat:

One of my favorite performers, who appeared

in the concert in the year that I was Grand Marshall

was The Village People.

So, I'm taking the prerogative,

welcoming them again, and singin' "Y.M.C.A.",

which by the way, not only is one of my favorite songs

but it's especially good when you exercise.

Being Grand Marshall of The Hollywood Christmas Parade

was a most memorable event for me.

It's always been the official start

of the holiday season in Los Angeles

and seeing all those families lining the parade route,

enjoying the music and festivities,

and waiting for the arrival of Santa is truly heartwarming.

It was also great being able to perform right there

on the red carpet for everyone.

I would like to wish you all a very happy,

healthy, and safe holiday season.

- We've had plenty of cool cars

in the parade over the years, Laura.

- Yeah, sometimes it's TV and movie stars riding in cars

and, sometimes, the cars are the stars.

(Christmas music)

- Coming up next, we got a fan favorite.

- Here comes Nate Truman's Star Car Central

Movie and TV Cars and look who's leading the pack,

riding in Nate's Austin Powers Shauguar,

it's Burt Ward, TV's Boy Wonder,

who played Robin on the TV Batman.

Well, Burt isn't the only crime fighter with a Star Car,

here's the Green Hornet's ride, The Black Beauty.

Nate Truman knows how to always bring out your ride.

- [Erik] My Chips bike'll be leading the big man tonight.

- [Laura] Hi, Nate.

Thanks for bringing out all these amazing movie and TV cars.

Now, you may note this vehicle is the Magnum P.I. Ferrari.

It was also featured in National Lampoon's Vacation...

- That's right. - Driven by Christie Brinkley.

- [Erik] That's right.

- [Laura] And for the first time,

side by side with the Girswold's memorable wagon,

the Family Truckster.

- [Erik] They're headed to Walley World, right?

- [Laura] That's right, Erik.

And here's another new car to the parade,

the Cadillac Hero featured in True Romance,

starring Christian Slater.

Here are two of the three versions

of the Back to the Future DeLorean time machines.

- [Erik] Next up is the groovy Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine.

- [Laura] And helping then search for ghosts

is the 2016 style version

of the Ectomobile from Ghostbusters.

(applause) (audience cheering)

- I still think the giant balloons

are a favorite with the crowds.

- I know they're your favorites

and we've had them in The Hollywood Christmas Parade

for the past 10 years, but this next one is a great example.

Check it out.

- [Erik] It's Elmo from Sesame Street.

(audience applauding)

(audience cheering)

- You know Eric, from the very first

Hollywood Christmas Parade in 1928,

there have been floats pulled by horses,

pushed by people, and driven with motors.

- Yes, and one of the most impressive was this one

that was way more than just the float.

- It was.

Now, take a look at this colorful float,

inspired by the famous Nebuta Festival of Aomori Prefecture.

- [Erik] I have to tell you, Laura,

year after year it's one of the largest summer festivals

in all of Japan.

- [Laura] Exactly.

(drums banging)

Well Erik, time now for anther amazing encore performance

by one of our incredible musical artists.

- Hold on to your Santa hat

for this memorable act, Bret Michaels.

- We've had giant balloons with all kinds of themes.

- Yes, and the one's that have always

been audience favorites are the ones that are recognizable,

much-love characters.

(Christmas music)

- [Erik] Look, up in the sky!

Straight from Sesame Street, it's Super Grover.

- [Laura] And here's a character everyone will recognize,

from the best selling book Green Eggs and Ham,

by Dr. Seuss, it's Sam I Am.

And now, it's Thing 1 and Thing 2.

- [Erik] From The Cat in the Hat!

- You know, we've been so luck to have people

and groups in the parade with rich, multicultural

and diverse backgrounds.

- Yes, and we also proud of the international bands

and floats we've had through the years.

- So, here's one that I loved

from the very first time I saw it.

It's the Korean-American Youth Performing Artists

from Chino Hills, California.

- [Erik] This non-profit group shares the beauty

of Korean cultures with other communities.

Let's listen.

(drums banging)

- [Laura] The Marine Toys for Tots program

could use help from all of us.

Here's how a couple in Florida, does their part.

- [Man] We originally met on Facebook

like everyone else now.

- [Woman] I didn't have any expectations at all.

He basically told me,

"I have a little bit of a different way.

to start off our date if that's okay with you."

Shopping for Toys for Tots, I was super confused.

I was like, "What are we doing?"

- Growing up my parents didn't have a lot,

but they always made Christmas special.

Because of that I've always tried to give back.

And that was my way to help

to give kids the same experience I had growing up.

No matter what their situation was,

everybody deserves that on Christmas morning.

- We each had our own shopping cart,

and he basically paid for five-year-old Jessica

to go on a shopping spree.

It was definitely like, wow, this is like Prince Charming.

- We've done it every year since for the last nine years.

Our wedding was very abnormal, for sure.

On our anniversary we go, and we shop for Toys For Tots,

and we donate it.

So today on our wedding day,

we want to start our wedding in the same way.

We want all of you to join us.

We have envelopes with gift cards for everybody.

We're all buying toys for Toys For Tots.

(crowd laughs)

- It was a really beautiful surprise

when we saw all the news stations waiting for us outside.

I was really happy for Toys For Tots,

because I really was praying that it would inspire

more people to donate.

Our family didn't have a lot growing up,

and when my family saw him do such a loving act,

and they discovered that it was something

he did on our first date,

they were like, "This is her man.

This is her guy."

- What's next, Laura?

- Well, see if you remember

this classic Hollywood Christmas Parade holiday favorite

The Cat in The Hat.

This mischievous cat looks like he's ready to have

some holiday fun.

(audience cheers)

- And now it's time to relive

more of that holiday magic.

- Here is how it looked

when our co-host Elizabeth Stanton presented it.

(graphics chime)

- The best seats in the house are in the grand stands.

And especially when you're having

a magician performing right in front of you.

I'm here with Farrell Dillon from the hit TV show,

"Masters of Illusion."

- Hey Elizabeth, we're gonna do a trick together,

so here. - Oh a trick.

- Grab these two pieces of cloth,

just the corners of this tablecloth here,

and I want you to concentrate on the top of the table.

- Okay.

- Look.

- Oh my gosh, it's moving! It's floating!

- Look underneath. You can look underneath.

Look, is there anything under there?

- Ah! - Whoa, whoa.

- Whoa, it's really windy here tonight

- I know. Here.

(crowd shouting)

- Thank you, Elizabeth.

Look, it is just-

- That was crazy!

- That's insane.

- You know, we mentioned the celebrities we've had

in the parade through the years, but you know

who's always been bigger than any of those stars?

- I think I know who you're talking about.

It was a 60-foot tall Gumby balloon, right?

- Absolutely. (Erik laughs)

- Now, here comes one of my favorite classic TV characters.

It's Gumby, who's been entertaining kids of all ages

for over 60 years.

I love Gumby.

He's also 60 feet tall,

and is being guided along by folks

from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

(steel drums ring)

- You know, one of my favorite people has come to the parade

for the past several years now.

- Montel Williams, our co-host.

- Yes, and he's always reminded us about the people

who make Christmas a little more special for others.

- I'm here with Staff Sergeant Barsallo.

You're from New Jersey.

- Yes.

- But you're also here telling us why it's so important

for people to understand why the Marine Corps

is involved with Toys for Tots.

Tell us why.

- It's very important,

because Marines have been leading the community

in gaining gifts for underprivileged children

in the communities for 69 years now.

It's near and dear for the Marine Corps

and give back to the community

that wants us to be a part of the United States.

- Well, not only do they support and defend our democracy,

but they support and defend those underprivileged children

around the country every single year, giving back.

I think this year you're gonna raise over 5 million toys

for children who have gone without.

- Well, we've said it before, and it's so true.

One thing the Hollywood Christmas Parade

has always been known for is

the incredible musical performances.

- I'm Lieutenant Colonel Peter Tagni,

the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Retired,

and I'm the coordinator

for the Toys for Tots Native American Program

located out of Laguna Niguel, California.

We started with the Navajos, and now it's grown

to where we're doing probably...

We're in 10 states now.

Last year we delivered toys

to 180,000 Native American children on their reservations.

We delivered probably two toys each.

We had about 465,000 toys to deliver.

Last year we probably did about 60 different reservations

in 10 states, and it keeps growing every year.

Because of the virus,

and the virus has hit the

reservations very hard this year,

harder than some of the states,

we're doing distribution in the parking lot today.

Tropicana has been really good about supporting

the Toys for Tots Native American Program

for many, many years now.

- It really helps us, the tribe,

because a lot of kids out there don't get a lot of toys.

Watching the kids come in

and picking up their toys, or selecting the toys

that they want, it's really heart-touching.

We have a lot of kids that don't have toys,

and they're unfortunate.

So what we do, my tribe, our police department,

EMS and volunteers,

we go from home to home and give toys to the kids.

Now the COVID-19, you know, it's kind of hard,

because families are out of jobs.

A lot more families gonna be looking

towards finding toys for the kids.

- Giving out and distributing the toys,

you just see how happy they are.

And I think it's really good for our community

to even have this here for them.

- It is a great program.

It brings people together. Brings the community together.

- For our tribe, it's a way of giving back,

for our police department and as well as the nation.

Seeing a law enforcement officer coming over

and bringing them a toy.

And for us, it's just, we don't ask for anything in return.

It's just putting a smile on a kid's face is what it is.

with the parade.

Do you remember how windy it was that one year?

- Oh, do I remember how windy?

It's Santa Claus!

Oh yeah. It was crazy.

- Our co-hosts had to find some shelter

up in the grand stand for this magic trick.

- Hey, Erik and Laura, right now we are with Naathan Phan,

one of the magicians from the hit show,

"Masters of Illusion."

- And he is about to show us an illusion.

- I am, indeed, using a stocking and a cup.

Here, hold on to that.

There's nothing like a good equestrian group.

- I agree, Laura.

The horses have always been my favorite,

and one of the most graceful and magnificent

was this group of riders and they're very talented horses.

- [Laura] Wow, look at these gorgeous horses

from Mario's Andalusians.

- [Eric] These are among the oldest horse breeds

known as the pure Spanish horse.

They are famous for their beautiful manes and tails.

- [Laura] The riders are demonstrating

some fancy footwork tonight.

The red carpet on Hollywood Boulevard has been the venue

for some of our most memorable musical performances.

You know, there are almost one and a half million Americans

on active military duty this Christmas at home and overseas.

- [Eric] And falling close behind the color guard,

we had the Air Force Mini Jet Team!

- [Laura] The all volunteer group

of sergeants and airmen take these mini jets

to elementary schools and to children

with disabilities and illnesses throughout the year.

- So many dedicated volunteer groups come together

to make the Hollywood Christmas Parade special every year.

- Yes, and this one made an impressive appearance

that thrilled fans of a certain movie franchise.

It's the 501st Legion,

the world's definitive Imperial Star Wars

costuming organization with over 12,000 members

in over 60 countries, they work with and promote

the causes of the American Cancer Society,

Starlight Foundation, Make A Wish foundation,

and various children's hospitals worldwide.

- [Eric] As they say, they are the bad guys doing good.

- [Laura] Well, good conquers evil,

so with them are members of the R-2 Builders Club

and the Rebel Legion,

the international Star Wars costuming organization

focusing on good guy costumes

with roughly 3,500 members worldwide.

- [Eric] And the motto of the Rebel Legion is,

"We are the heroes, may the force be with you!"

- [Laura] Now here's a beautiful Christmas song

- You know, Eric, it's always been so wonderful for us

to be a part of the Hollywood Christmas Parade

and to kick off the holiday season.

- And what would the holidays be like without toys

and Christmas presents?

- Not too much fun, I would imagine.

- Right, and to make sure that doesn't happen,

the volunteers of the Marine's Toys For Tots program

do everything they can to spread the cheer.

- When the pandemic hit,

we partnered with another nonprofit, Good360,

and during that period of time, about three months

during the worst peak of the pandemic,

we distributed about 2 million toys and books

to children across the country.

Now, of course, we're ramping up for our Christmas campaign.

We need to replenish, restock so to speak.

put it in the box or simply go to our website

and make a monetary donation.

- You know, Eric, it really is amazing

how many top acts we've had grace our concert stage

over the years.

when the Hollywood Christmas Parade Greatest Moments

Welcome back to the Hollywood Christmas Parade

Greatest Moments.

- You know, Eric, some of the best equestrian groups

are not just riders on horseback.

- No, some of them go all out

in a whole show unto themselves.

- The pageantry, the majesty,

even the horses have worn costumes.

- Yeah, like this group.

That was a real hit with the fans.

-And me.

-They're called Majestic Acres,

and they're here from Ramona, California.

- [Laura] With their all black Royal Friesian horses

and magnificent costumes, they really are majestic.

- [Eric] Oh, they're beautiful, Laura.

Now here's one of my favorite marching bands

and color guards who joins us every year.

- You know, you do have an affinity

for the men and women in blue.

- Yes, I do, Laura.

And this pipe and drum corps has always been

one of the best.

- [Laura] And now here come the Los Angeles Police

Emerald Society Pipes & Drums.

The band consists of members who are active, former,

or retired law enforcement officers.

(bagpipe and drums music)

We've mentioned supporting the Marine Toys For Tots program.

Here's a family that has really stepped up.

- I'm a proud parent, my husband

and I have two children, Taylor and Christopher Bracey.

- My name is Taylor Bracey, I am 16

and I've been homeschooled for seven years.

- I'm Christopher Bracey, I'm 13 years old

and I was born, I was diagnosed with autism.

I never believed that.

- I was born with the bone disorder

called cleidocranial dysplasia.

I have no collarbone, open cranium, and impacted teeth.

- As a project for homeschool,

you're required to have good citizenship.

- We choose Toys For Tots.

- Getting your child and your family involved

with Toys For Tots will be beneficial to all.

We have definitely felt the love, the encouragement.

I could see the change in my children.

- Even with their own challenges,

they have devoted much of their own time

to help less fortunate children.

- What they've done is made a difference in the community

as well as showing other families with special needs

that they too can make a difference.

- It's important to help others

because you never know what somebody else is going through.

- It feels good because you help people.

- When you work with a program such as Toys For Tots,

being all inclusive, it means all families can participate

at any level.

- I actually traveled to Dallas, Texas a few days ago

to meet this wonderful family.

Jacqueline, her husband, Anthony,

and they're two wonderful children who have given so much

to their local community, that I decided

to start the first ever Marine Toys For Tots

Youth Ambassador Program,

and they were actually the first children

that we have appointed and inducted into the program.

There's a lot of power in the slogan "Kids helping kids."

And that's exactly what these children are doing.

- [Laura] And now back to our concert stage,

for the winners of last year's Christmas Caroler Challenge

TV show, it's Bank of Harmony.

♪ Jingle bells, jingle bells ♪

♪ Jingle all the way ♪

♪ Oh what fun it is to ride ♪

♪ In a one horse open sleigh ♪

(group bopping)

♪ It was December 24th and Hollis Ave in the dark ♪

♪ When I see my man chilling with his dog in the park ♪

♪ I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear ♪

♪ But then his dog, not a dog, a ill reindeer ♪

♪ But then I was illin' because the man had a beard ♪

♪ And a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared ♪

♪ But I turned my head a second and the man had gone ♪

♪ But he left his driver's wallet smack dead on the lawn ♪

♪ I picket the wallet up then I took a pause ♪

♪ Took out the license and it cold said "Santa Claus" ♪

♪ A million dollars in it, cold hundreds of g's ♪

♪ Enough to buy a boat and matching car with ease ♪

♪ But I'd never steal from Santa, cause that ain't right ♪

♪ So I'm going home to mail it back to him that night ♪

♪ But when I got home I bugged, cause under the tree ♪

♪ Was a letter from Santa and all the dough was for me. ♪

♪ Dashing through the snow ♪

♪ In a one horse open sleigh ♪

♪ O'er the fields we go ♪

♪ Laughing all the way ♪

♪ Bells on bobtails ring ♪

♪ Making spirits bright ♪

♪ What fun it is to ride and sing ♪

♪ A sleighing song tonight ♪

♪ It's Christmas time in Hollis, Queens ♪

♪ Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens ♪

♪ Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese ♪

♪ And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees ♪

♪ The rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's ♪

♪ But each and every year we bust Christmas carols ♪

♪ Good King Wenceslas looked out ♪

♪ On the Feast of Stephen ♪

♪ Joy to the world ♪

♪ The Lord has come ♪

♪ Rhymes so loud and proud you hear it ♪

♪ It's Christmas time and we got the spirit ♪

♪ The time is now ♪

♪ The place is here ♪

♪ And the whole wide world is filled with cheer ♪

♪ With the mics in our hands ♪

Welcome back to the Hollywood Christmas Parade

Greatest Moments.

- Now what you're about to see

is one of the most amazing floats

ever seen on Hollywood Boulevard.

- It is.

It was a fan favorite when they first appeared

in the parade, and you're about to see why.

Coming down the red carpet, we have a gorgeous lantern

from Hanart Culture's Chinese Lantern Festival.

(crowd cheers)

- You know, long before cars,

people rode horses in parades.

- I know, well the Hollywood Christmas Parade

is no exception, and we've always had

the most amazing horses.

Check out one of our favorite equestrian groups.

- [Eric] Andale!

Let's welcome the Charros de la Puente!

- [Laura] It's a family affair,

as they have three generations of riders represented,

all wearing their authentic Charro suits here tonight.

Definitely a crowd favorite!

This next group has been in the parade several times,

and has always been a crowd favorite.

- They're definitely one of the most colorful groups

we've ever had!

- Colorful is a good way to describe it.

- Very colorful.

- Bringing a vibrant international flavor

to the walk of fame, here's an encore performance by PAVA.

- [Eric] They dress in traditional Korean costumes

and they play ethnic instruments.

Their goals are to preserve the environment,

promote voluntourism, and unify different communities

through cultural understanding.

(drums play)

(crowd cheers)

And of course, the moment everyone's looked forward to

every year, especially the kids.

- It's the arrival of the jolly old elf himself, Santa!

- Always ushered in by an honored marching band.

It's the Long Beach Jr. Concert Band.

The band has won over 1500 trophies

and 28 state youth band championships.

- [Eric] That's right,

and the band has spent the past four decades

leading the way for a red suited gentlemen

with a big white beard!

(parade drum music)

- [Laura] Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,

it's the man we've all been waiting for,

- [Eric] He knows if you've been naughty or nice,

and he knows how to get the crowd on their feet!

Santa Claus!

- Ho ho ho ho ho!

Ho ho ho ho ho!

- [Laura] Santa is sure looking dapper tonight.

- Merry Christmas!

- [Laura] He wears that red suit better

than anyone I know!

- Hello there!

Ho ho ho ho ho, merry Christmas everybody!

Oh, it's so good to see everybody here.

Ho ho!

- Well, Eric, the holiday season is off and running.
