first time that it felt good,

I can think

I was in the sixth grade,
I was rehearsing

and I had to hit a high note.

I kind of switched it
into this high head voice,

and I heard my mother
laugh at me.

I mean, it kind of just took
the wind out of my confidence,

and my mother's critical voice

is in the back of my psyche

and it never left.

- I want to focus
on the first time it felt good,

where you went,

"Ah, people recognize
that this was good."

- I was probably five or six
and, like, I was entertaining.

My mother was critical,
my mother was tough,

my mother was competitive,

but my mother always
told me the truth

and definitely in the back of
my head I can hear that laugh

and I can feel
being that 11-year-old kid

being laughed at.

- Start feeling it now
and visualizing it.

Like, you at the theater
out on that stage

having the time of your life.

for a long time?

when I was a kid,

and she just hosed my leg off
