All of your skills will be put to the test

to see who will be the last florist standing.

My nickname is Bel Fabio.

I am a bodybuilder and I'm a floral designer.

My signature style would be theatrical romantic.

We have asked each of you to create an arrangement

that showcases your floral aesthetic.

However, we don't know which one of you created which.

And our top two picks

will be captains in our first team challenge.

I'm 100% a competitive person.

Being an NFL cheerleader for eight years,

it's one of the things that drives me.

Here, to my British brain,

I struggle to have a gerbera with a muscari.

I think that's what's exciting, is how nonsensical it is.

I love this.

I was born and raised in Honduras

and I think that immediately people see my work

and they understand who I am.

This is a beautiful tropical fantasy.

I'm here from Austin, Texas,

and I feel like I have a strong style.

My kids and wife, my mom, you know,

I mean, everyone back home

is definitely rooting for me, for sure.

I'm from Clarksburg, Maryland,

and I live with my six-year-old son.

I absolutely think my arrangement

has the potential to win.

It's so beautiful but that's my opinion

and I'm biased. (LAUGHS)

ELIZABETH: For the team challenge,

red team captain Lutfi selected Ron, Canaan, Antonio and Jenny.

Blue team captain Kiara chose Jimmi, Rachel,

Melissa and Sarah.

Welcome, everyone, to your first Full Bloom team challenge.

How are you all feeling?

Excellent.

- Did you say 'sexy', Ron? - Excellent.

You said 'excellent'. I thought Ron said 'sexy'.

I was like, "Alright, red team's got this.

"Ron's feeling sexy."

Each team will have four hours to design 16 chess pieces.

You will be working with either a light pastel-coloured palette

with neon accents

or a deep jewel-toned palette with metallic accents.

You'll be judged on your creativity, color balance

and technique,

while telling a story about the power and function

that each of these pieces represents.

The winning team will be safe from elimination.

However, members of the losing team

will have to fight to stay in the competition

in tomorrow's individual challenge.

Kiara, you get first pick.

We're going to go with the jewel-toned palette.

Glimmer, glam, we're gonna rock that out.

Lutfi, how are you feeling? What's your game plan?

I feel great. I'm really excited. I can't wait to win.

MELISSA: Wait, let's get 'em all off first.

I got it!

- You got it? - Yep.

Let's get started on the base

and we'll build up from there, how about that?

And each vase will have the overgrown greenery?

- Yep. - OK, gotcha. Cool.

So, we're doing our pawns first

and we're making them like tough and gritty,

like people who worked hard during those times did.

And our royalty pieces we're gonna make really opulent.

So like a gradual orchid and then into roses?

- Yep. Love it. - Cool.

- Gotcha, girl. - Thank you, love.

My day job, I'm an executive assistant at a software company.

I got into florals probably about five years ago.

I want to be a full-time florist

so this is really something that's me taking my dream

and putting it in front of everything else for now.

LUTFI: How many pawns do we have?

CONTESTANT: Eight. LUTFI: Eight?

OK, so the boys are gonna do three and three.

- And knock 'em out? - Yeah, and knock 'em out.

Our story is essentially based on the Mayan civilisation.

Growing up, I used to visit the Mayan ruins in Honduras

and I wanted to bring the history into life

through this challenge.

I think it's the perfect moment to share that part of me.

The colors are challenging.

I got the pastels and the neons

so I still need to make

color coordinations and groupings in my head.

Um...

I'm like really having a hard time with these guys.

- Focus. - Yeah.

Tell us what we need to do. We're here to support you.

I'm, like, trying to figure it out.

OK.

JENNY, V/O: There's a lot of flowers here

and they're, like, wanting to be used and showcased.

They're like, "Use me, use me, no, use me!"

They're like fighting on what to use.

So I think that, like, we should definitely walk up to 'em

and, like, gravitate to a color.

But he's the boss.

I'm not in charge this round so I'm just the assistant.

MAURICE: Well, well, well. Here we are!

What I like about this challenge is it's perceptively very easy

but it's actually quite complex.

SIMON: We want teams to tell us that story about pawns

and then the power of the king and queen.

I'll be disappointed if I'm not able to read those characters

because you can see them very clearly on a chessboard.

BOTH: Absolutely.

KIARA: Look at that knight, you guys.

He looks badass.

Gonna make a nice killer mohawk mane

out of these fan palms

and I'm gonna tuck the proteas into them

and they're gonna have crazy sprays of the purple delphinium

just coming out.

I love this because the knights are fierce

and these are long and spiky and that really fits

so I really think it's gonna work well.

Kiara's team have nailed

some really pretty big shapes already.

- The horsey one. ELIZABETH: The horse is so nice!

I mean, it looks like Kiara is a very dynamic team leader.

I expect that she knows what she wants,

she has it all laid out for her team

and that she's setting people up for success.

LUTFI: I don't know how this is going to stay here.

LUTFI, V/O: Just, like, in my head,

trying to find sense to what I'm making.

Lutfi is struggling with having such a big idea

that's detail oriented in such a short amount of time.

LUTFI: What do you think for these palms

to do, like, a whole little ball?

I... I... Um...

You think that's gonna take too much time to do?

I think it's gonna take too much time for that.

This is my first challenge and I want to win,

I do not want to see an elimination for my first day.

CANAAN: Lutfi.

- Huh? - We need...

We need to get one of those things...

- OK, I'm coming, I'm coming. - No, but...

So currently we're working on the king

so you're getting that very lush look,

you're starting to get the bright colors in there,

the power, that kind of feeling with it.

You're gonna start seeing the metallics

come into play with these two top pieces

and then slowly they're gonna fizzle out

until they get into the pawn.

JIMMI, V/O: I'm very excited to show off

who I am as a florist.

I'm from Belfair, Washington.

I opened my store three days before the shutdown.

It was hard.

It was a really rough, rough year.

But I owe a lot to Belfair.

Through the pandemic

I had phone calls while we were shut down

on how can we help you, how can we do this,

and for me this grand prize

is really to invest back into my business,

give Belfair something big to talk about,

and put us on the map a little more.

Can I steal some of this?

You can steal whatever you want.

- Well, hello. How's it going? - It's going good.

I think we're, like, making good time

and we're getting our basics done

and then we'll really be able to zhuzh and edit

and add where we need to.

..is I feel like I'm losing the shapes of things.

OK. That's valid.

- So I don't know what that is. - That is the queen.

At the moment this base and this...

- Are the same. - Are almost the same.

Where this should be here,

this should be thin, this should be major.

Yeah, we'll work on our proportions.

I think really good guidance

so we're gonna take that into account

and probably use it. Probably. I say probably.

It would be in your best interests.

OK, now I'm starting to feel a little pressure

but it's good pressure.

KIARA: I'm just staring at them right now.

Oh, my God, they, like, barely have anything done!

I'm just zip-tying and then mossing it away.

MAURICE: Lutfi. - How's it going?

I'm doing great. How's it going for you is the question?

I'm not gonna lie.

- It's like, a little stressful. - Uh-huh.

Rapid decision-making is not my favorite thing.

My concern is I do feel like we're almost two hours in

and I don't see a lot of flowers.

I know. The flowers are gonna come at the very end.

I feel like it's been a little challenging to find...

Are you nervous about that?

Every person that's been, like,

"It's going to come together at the last minute,"

it's not really worked out so well for them.

When I went over to Lutfi's team

there felt like there was just a little uncertainty.

Can we somehow start on the king?

It seems like there's a lot of ideas happening.

But are any of them being executed? (LAUGHS)

Well, that's the thing.

Dude, we've got to hurry, like we've got to make this happen.

As a leader, I think that one of my personal weaknesses

is probably time management.

My vision is to create a really stunning king and his queen

and these beautiful headpieces.

Do two rows of carnations here.

We'll go from there.

It would be nice to have like the big proteas for the centre.

ANTONIO: Beautiful. I love that idea.

LUTFI, V/O: I just need to make sure that I'm delivering.

When you're a team leader and you have such a strong vision

you need to just continue moving forward

and I do have a vision and I am a strong leader.

And then the palms will come out the side?

- Exactly. - OK.

So then you want the anthuriums along the edge of this?

Yeah. Off that guy.

I might be late but I'm gonna show up.

- The queen. - Queen.

ELIZABETH: I just saw a headdress, so...

- That's incredible. - That thing is exceptional.

So here's the thing.

If he is able to pull this off, it will be extraordinary.

It's gonna be the sleek and sexy sneak attack.

Wow, it's looking like they've got some pieces on the board.

I thought the prawns - I actually really quite like them.

Right now I'm working on the bishop of the chess set

and the halo.

LUTFI: I really love this, Ron.

Like, honestly, you have like such a beautiful hand.

RON: Back in New York I'm usually running the show

so this is kind of like letting go of the steering wheel

so it's an experimentation of trust.

I'm really happy we're doing this together.

I wish we had music and a cocktail or something, you know.

That would be fabulous.

Like somebody needs like a margarita over here.

but, as you can see,

I'm trying to create and make the top of this more grand

since she is the queen.

KIARA: It looks like a crown.

Yeah, it's looking like a crown now.

JENNY: Why do they have all their chess pieces out?

RON: 'Cause they already finished.

JENNY: They're done. RON: Yeah.

Alright. That's the first time I've looked over.

SIMON: The blue team are finished, finished.

Fabulous florists, the challenge is complete.

ELIZABETH: We were looking for creativity,

color balance and technique

while telling a story about the power and function

that each of these pieces represents.

I'm going to start with the blue team.

I love the fact that you've told me such a regal and royal story.

You really have given each of the pieces

its own characteristic.

I think the bishops are inspired,

their cloaks are beautiful.

I love the cape.

I wish it dragged to the floor, just to give me drama.

There's a lot of extra flowers there

and you guys were done early

which meant you had a lot of time.

So just to really have pushed that.

I think the mohawk on your knight

is really, really done well, so job well done on that.

I love the way you used gold accents

and then the rich jewel tones

but on all of the pawns

the lumpiness of them is drawing my eye away from the beauty

of what's going on behind them.

When you add plant material to any frame, it adds bulk.

And I worry that the sense of scale

has now been distorted.

Alright, team red.

Was it a smooth process?

ELIZABETH: A resounding yes.

- I was choked. - Wow!

It was a very intense and complex vision

to do within that period of time.

- Way to clean it up, Ron! - Yeah!

So, Lutfi, how was it being a team leader?

I'm really grateful of my team

and all the effort that was made.

It's like so wild

how, like, the last hour, like magic can happen.

I immediately am drawn to this Mayan kind of fan presentation

that looks very regal in the king and the queen.

Very, very well done. I love that.

ELIZABETH: I love the neon horse so much

and then I also love that the king proteas

are all at the base of the queen.

SIMON: For me, there feels to be a slight chaos.

The Mayan element of it

is almost such a beautifully clear, clean story

that I feel you slightly over-egged your puddings.

One thing I will tell both teams -

you were given so many materials

but sometimes take a step back

because you can overwork it just a bit.

SIMON: Both teams have created charming chess sets

but my favorite team is...

..the blue team. Well done.

You know, this was actually kind of a tough decision.

Both of you guys presented such beautiful work.

It has a wicker basket that's literally a backpack

that's super cute.

I gave her bird of paradise and pincushions,

two of my faves.

I'm curious to see how she comes up with something very exciting

to do with said objects.

What is Melissa doing with your box, Simon?

My box contained a beautiful vintage bucket,

the sort of thing that I grow all my plants in, in the garden.

She's got a pair of round spectacles

and some gorgeous garden roses

and some wonderful gem-coloured cottage scabious.

You call them scabious? We call it a scabiosa.

Well, you know. He calls everything wrong.

So I think that I am essentially going to create

what I would assume would be kind of Simon's -

a table in his home where he comes in at the end of the day

and he lays his glasses and he lays his pocket watch

and he unwinds

and we're going to kind of display

maybe what his upcoming project's going to be

which I'd assume would be in his personal garden.

I've got seed packets and some of his favorite blooms

and so I thought, "How fun would it be

"for him to be almost intoxicated on the flowers

"by having his glasses be all floral?"

Simon is so interesting.

First of all, I love his love for glasses.

I feel like him and I would be kindred spirits with that.

But he's worked for the Queen.

I feel like his style is just so incredible

and somebody that I could potentially learn from

because it's so different than mine.

This solo challenge is everything.

This could mean the end of my time here in the challenge

and I'm not ready to go home.

The vest was very you, the glasses I love.

English garden. Totally worked.

Thought you could've done a better job on my pail.

That's my favorite vintage bucket!

- Mainly weddings. - Weddings.

Primarily weddings. I do a lot of elopements.

I'm from Arizona and I do desert elopements.

Desert elopements! We don't have those in England.

So how are the flowers different from one of those to a wedding?

People take the money they would spend on their wedding,

they put 'em in their florals.

So we'll do huge backdrops behind them in the desert

and we cart them all in and we build them

and they'll have an incredible backdrop

- and a beautiful bouquet. - Just the two of them?

Yeah, because they haven't spent money feeding people.

- They put 'em in their florals. - Ooh, I quite like that idea.

- Great for business! - It's great for business.

You have lots of little treasures here

so hopefully we're going to be hypnotising you

in to making something magical.

There's always a nice way to use non-plant material

- like these geodes here. - So pretty.

I just wire them up, bend it over, twist it down,

and then just to make it clean and beautiful

I floral tape it down.

And then we just start to add them in

and see what feels right.

SIMON: I'm loving that. MAURICE: Right?

ELIZABETH: So beautiful. Those geodes are gorgeous.

I think it's super vibrant and loud

and I really think my style kind of matches with yours

in the sense that you give really grand moments

in your personality in your style it translates

so I want to also bring that to the table with my design.

but the green, for me, at the moment,

Tell us, how have you unlocked the mystery

of my blooming botanicals?

I tried to unlock it by adding my style...

..to what I think an afternoon with you in the garden

would be like.

I've got some mint tea there,

but our mint tea made us go a little zany.

So I made some fabulous floral spectacles.

And then your pocket watch

is laced in through our bucket of blooms.

The fact that you've got mint in there, sweet peas...

- I grow this in my garden. - Oh!

It's utterly enchanting and pleasing.

You've caught me, which I think is really lovely,

but I'm feeling you

and I feel you've emphasised and used

every element that was in my box.

I mean, the floral spectacles, I just have to...try on.

- Wow! - Oh, my God!

MAURICE: Well, well, well.

I'm noticing here that the pocket watch,

usually the hands are at 10 and 2.

- Did you change it? - I did.

- Oh, you did? - I did.

It's the time my wife and I were married and she's just...

..um...really done a lot to help me to be here

so she knows I love her and I'm thinking of her

and I'm just so grateful to be here.

What did you get in your box

and tell us about the journey on which you are taking us.

So in my whackdoodle box of Maurice I got a headpiece,

shoes, the feathers, the tassels.

I leaned more towards that cottage look

and that was why I purposely chose

to go against choosing Simon's box

so that I could challenge myself.

It was a tricky box that you got

but I think that you handled it in a fun way.

You can see like there's just so much exuberance going on,

there's so much exploration going on.

However, it's not as cohesive as I want it to be.

It's like two different things happening at once,

like I need a pop of this color here.

Just something to help connect.

I could tell that you're a bit of a kid in a candy store

and you were given a box

from a man who doesn't know where to stop.

You know what...

And there is an element of it that is a joyous explosion

in its exuberance and in its learning.

But I might have to have a lie-down in a darkened room

after looking at it.

(ELIZABETH LAUGHS) Oh, my God.

SIMON: We also need to see you,

we need to see you true to yourself.

And I don't know if you've got the you yet.

Sarah, tell us about your creation.

I really vibed with your aesthetic.

I found lots of different textures

and I'm from the D.C. area, and in springtime

we have lots of magnolias and cherry blossoms blooming

so I put some magnolias in there.

But I wanted to make it look marshy, swampy,

that's why I used the snake plant in there.

Well, you nailed it.

- It's spectacular. - Thank you.

It was an absolute joy to watch you build this thing

from start to finish.

Palette, obviously, you were given

but what you did with it

and then the way that you introduced texture

all the way through.

Snake grass was totally unexpected

and was such a brilliant move

and as you get in there

there's like textures, a little wasps' nest,

there's that little hidden clump of sweet peas

that are a little bit dying

and just from start to finish

it's so, to use a Simon word, inspired.

ELIZABETH: So, Kiara. - Hi.

Will you walk us through what you were trying to create?

I was trying to demonstrate

the duality of who I think you are,

which is a little bit funky but also joyful

so that's really where I was going with that.

I love an arrangement that has two personalities to it.

I like starting on a journey over here in flowers

and ending up someplace completely different over here.

For me the two things,

one there has to be a through line

like dribbling a little yellow

or carrying some blue carnations

could've worked on the yellow side.

- It's just like very stark. - Right.

Alright, Rachel. Tell us about your piece.

I wanted to feel like the flowers

were like exploding out of the basket through the netting,

kind of imitating that nature always finds its way.

MAURICE: All I gave you was the pincushion...

..and the bird of paradise.

You could've gone anywhere with that.

But it just shows that you have such style and such...

- Oh. - Yeah.

It really shows.

I love how you settled on the bunny tails.

What you started with was really kind of heavy handed

and this just gives you that little...

- Lightness. - Ting!

..um, on the end, which I really like.
