Hey, how are the harp lessons going?

In fact I have my very first recital tonight.

Yeah, you know what? It's probably best to show you.

Yeah, why are we laughing?

I'm not sure.

I don't know what's funny either,

but now whenever I play my harp, I giggle.

Weird. Definitely.

And I don't know how I'm going to play at my recital.

I'm supposed to play an entire song

on a stage in front of hundreds of people.

That's a lot of people.

It's great that so many people are coming to see you.

No, it isn't.

I've been practicing for weeks,

and this recital,

it's really important to me,

but now whenever I play--

[giggling]

...I giggle, and then I can't play my harp at all.

-Oh. -She's right.

Yeah, she is definitely giggling,

and she definitely can't play her harp at a recital

when she giggles.

-This is a problem. -Yes.

So she can play the harp at her recital tonight.

And that means we need some good ideas.

It doesn't look funny.

[sniffing]

And it definitely doesn't taste funny.

The harp doesn't seem very funny,

but there must be something about it

that's making Nina laugh.

-Hey, I know. -What?

-Nina? -Mm-hmm.

What do you think about when you play your harp?

I think about the notes

and strings and my fingers.

I guess I think about the harp when I play the harp.

So Nina,

when you play the harp,

while thinking about the harp--

[gasps]

...you giggle.

Yep.

So what do you think would happen if you played the harp

without thinking about it?

But how can I play the harp without thinking about it?

What do you guys think I'm thinking about right now?

-Dancing? -No.

I was thinking about playing the maracas.

-Oh. -[Nina] Oh.

Now what am I thinking about right now?

Oh. Always.

So now what we need to do

is find something for you to think about

other than playing the harp.

Okay, I could do that.

What should I think about?

Oh, how about numbers?

When I'm counting, it's almost impossible to think about anything else.

It's especially hard if you count backwards.

Ooh.

I'll try it.

[Nina] Twenty, nineteen...

Eighteen, seventeen...

-Sixteen, Fifteen... -It's working.

Fourteen, thirteen... [out of tune]

Twelve...

-Uh, eleven. -What happened?

I guess I need to practice more

before I can play the harp without thinking about it.

Looks like we need another idea.

-I've got it. -Hey.

Now, think about it.

What is giggling?

I know.

Giggling is silly.

Right. And what is the opposite of silly?

[together] Serious!

I mean, uh, serious.

Exactly.

Nina can act like someone who is very serious.

And then she might be able to play her harp without giggling.

[laughs] But what kind of people are serious?

-Journal time. -Journal.

Sometimes people have to be serious when they do serious jobs.

-Police officers are serious. -Oh yeah. Good.

So are firefighters.

And there's our librarian, Mrs. McDougal.

Mrs. McDougal's really nice,

but she is super serious.

Those are all great ideas,

so what do you say, Nina?

Now we need another idea.

Okay, we know that Nina giggles when she plays the harp.

Well, is it the harp that's making her giggle,

or is it playing music that makes her giggle?

-Oh... -Good question.

Never thought about that.

Right, and maybe we should have Nina

try to play some other instruments.

And if she can play those instruments

-without giggling, -Right.

then it must be the harp.

And if she can't,

-then it's the music. -Right,

and once we know exactly what's causing the problem,

we should be able to find out a way to help her.

to solving this idea emergency.

I think we need to figure out

exactly what it is about your harp playing that makes you giggle.

And if we can figure it out, we'll be able to find a way to stop it.

right after my harp lesson.

There was something really funny at my harp lesson.

Maybe the reason you laugh when you play your harp now

is because you couldn't laugh during the lesson.

Like the laughs were all caught up inside her.

Exactly.

Nina never got a chance to get her giggles out.

I mean, you just can't keep your feelings inside.

Sometimes you gotta let them out.

Nina, you have got to get your giggles out.

If you do that, you'll be able to play the harp again without laughing.
