I listened to a lot of musical theater growing up,

and Broadway was like this intangible dream,

so I dipped into office work, and I thought it was over,

and then I met Casper.

Before Casper, I was always scared

that I would get stage fright, but Casper was the cure.

And thank God I found him.

and I absolutely love where I come from.

It's a tribe in Hollister, North Carolina.

Music definitely was inspired by my culture.

Every third weekend in April, the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe

has its powwow, which is a festival

celebrating our tribe with dancing and singing.

Growing up, it was super special,

and it still is very special.

So often, we are erased

from the conversation.

to make my tribe proud,

and I don't take it for granted at all,

and I do financial work in book publishing.

Growing up in New York City, I started singing early on,

in grade school and glee clubs,

and fell in love, of course, with it.

And then I started training more classically

as I got more serious.

Any opportunity to perform-- I was right there.

But I stopped, because, you know, I like to eat,

and the life of performing is rough.

So I wound up making money in accounting.

People need a bookkeeper, always.

But over the years, I've never lost

my passion for performing.

And to wind up here is--it's a dream come true.

I would love to be doing this full-time.

Obviously, you know, like, a Vegas-type show is ideal.

And so the more I think about it,

you know, the more I'm like, "Okay, let's go for it."

- I was around ten years old when I discovered dance.

Like everything in my life,

I didn't really know what I wanted,

but I knew that's something in it spoke to me.

Dance chose me.

- I was definitely not your average girl.

Maybe a little more on the tomboy side,

which I'm still. Me and my brother,

we were always playing in the mud, climbing trees.

So when I started dancing,

it helped me to discover my feminine side.

I have shaved my head one time. I didn't look pretty.

But it was great, because it made me realize

that being a woman

and being who I am was not attached to my hair,

to my body. That changed everything.
