The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 61

Please wait here for a while, later the ritualist will bring you towards the great hall.

Heavens, what is going on? -Why are there two empresses?

Shush, lower your voice. Don't spout nonsense.

Princess Yun Meng, why are you here?

I am the Empress of Great Qin.

If I don't sit here, where should I go?

You are the Empress of Great Qin? Then who am I?

Bring it up.

What do you mean by this?

You can fool others, but you cannot fool me.

A mere commoner of Yan actually dares pretend to be the daughter of royalty!

If the royal family of Great Qin finds out, not just you,

everyone else in Yan State will suffer the consequences.

I will give you a kind way out. Take these jewels and escape.

I will personally bid you farewell.

What are you doing?

Whether I am of the royal family of Yan or just a commoner,

The conferment of queen in this instance will be done with the complete Six Etiquettes.

After the grand ceremony, I will officially be the Empress of Great Qin!

A bramble finch will always just be a bramble finch (small and insignificant).

Even if you were to perch on a branch of a Wutong (Chinese parasol tree), you would still never become a phoenix.

Are you sure that the Ba Zi sent to the temple are yours? [Ba Zi: Eight characters in four pairs; including the year, month, day and hour of a person's birth]

Princess Yun Meng, I am the Empress hand picked by the Emperor of Qin.

In this aspect, you cannot contest me.

If you do not leave, when the Emperor arrives

I'm afraid that you will be kicked out of the palace and Chu State will become a laughing stock.

Do you really think,

Lü Buwei will allow the culprit who assassinated the Emperor escape?

Today's wedding is just an excuse to bring Crown Prince Dan into the palace to die.

What did you just say?

You don't believe me? You can find out for yourself.

Your precious Crown Prince Dan has become meat paste.

Where are the other guests? - Other than you, there is no one else.

What does the Emperor of Qin mean by this?

Watch out!

Li Ge? Why are you here?

Hurry and leave the palace. The wedding today

is a trap set by Lü Buwei to kill you.

If you don't leave now it will be too late!

With just the two of us, how do we escape the palace?

How are we supposed to leave Xianyang?

Furthermore, this is a plan by Lü Buwei.

It might not be the Emperor of Qin's intentions.

Older Brother,

Lü Buwei has ultimate power in Great Qin and he wholeheartedly wants to kill you.

How can you escape this?

What will happen if they find out the truth about the actual situation?

Don't mention Lü Buwei, even the Emperor of Qin will not let you off!

Hurry and leave!

No! I cannot leave.

In order to gain his trust, you had no regrets sacrificing a girl who liked you.

Now you still want to add on your life to this?

You are a royal member of the Yan family.

You were originally supposed to be a concubine of Qin.

Just that because of fate, the Emperor of Qin favours you.

So luckily you became the Empress of Great Qin.

Then?

After I become Empress, I can send news of Qin to Yan State.

I can help the people of Yan State rebel.

Then I can halt Great Qin's plans of conquering the six states?

Or, after I become Empress,

I can ensure your safety in Great Qin,

let you safely get through your life as a hostage prince?

Then have you ever thought of me? Even a little bit?

I am the Crown Prince of Yan State!

Yan State is too weak and small, we cannot defend ourselves.

In order to protect the people I can only do this.

Li Ge, you are also a citizen of Yan.

How can you bear to stand by and watch as the Emperor of Qin ravages Yan State,

slaughtering our citizens?

I have personally seen Nong Yu's downfall.

I know I am unlike her, and would not be able to silently endure.

My outcome may even be worse than hers.

Whenever I look into the Emperor of Qin's eyes,

I cannot bear to lie to him.

I am unable to do it!

Older Brother, let's just escape back to Yan, alright?

Could it be, towards him you...

No. I did not. I did not!

Let's leave! The banquet has not begun.

The Princess of Chu can't wait for me to leave.

Maybe we still have a chance!

Hurry, let's go!

Your Majesty, have you seen it for yourself?

You know that the thing I hate the most,

are lies and betrayal!

My father died in battle.

Thanks to the mercy of the Yan Emperor, ever since young

I have stayed in Yan palace.

Today I follow him into Qin in order to accompany him.

But you are the Qin Emperor.

Whatever you want is yours for the taking.

So... from a commoner of Yan

I have become a gift to be bestowed upon you.

So from the start till the end,

you have never said a single word of truth to me.

But what could I do?

In the six countries, who would dare

offend the Qin Emperor for the sake of a woman?

I am of a lowly status, don't mention being a gift,

even if I am to be sacrificed, I cannot resist.

Your Majesty, women are just like pretty clothing.

There are not worth much.

Why must you be so angry?

You want Li Ge to remain by the Qin Emperor as a sword. Now that you have failed,

you actually dare say such words. You are really thick-skinned.

Your Majesty, Crown Prince Dan brought this woman into Qin.

I fear that he has already known that the Princess of Yan is incapable.

He wanted to use Li Ge's looks to become their reason for success.

Otherwise, why didn't he keep this woman for himself,

but allowed her to slowly advance to the position of Empress?

Is what he said true?

Lü Buwei, don't you dare jump to such conclusions.

Your Majesty... for lying to you,

I am willing to die to repay for my crimes.

Please let the Crown Prince go.

Even if you want to die, you can only die because I kill you.

I do not allow you to commit suicide!

Your Majesty, Your Majesty!

Li Ge!

Li Ge! Li Ge!

Your Majesty, you don't have to.

Too bad I can't make it to the boiling pot penalty.

Shut up, shut up!

I thought he was a valiant man.

I didn't know...

But I received help from Yan's royal family.

How could I betray Yan?

I couldn't, I couldn't.

Your Majesty,

You are very different

from how I originally thought.

If I was honest with you when we first met,

would the ending be different now?

Li Ge, Li Ge, Li Ge!

Li Ge!

Your Majesty, today is your wedding. It's time for you to attend the wedding.

Princess Yun Meng is waiting for you now.

You plotted everything.

To make me marry the Princess of Chu,

you would use any means.

Your brother-like friend and the woman you like cooperated in lying to you.

The King of Qin was played like a monkey. All I did was to let you see the truth.

Everything was for you and for Qin.

Should I have let Prince Dan succeed in his scheme?

If my Zhong Fu was really thinking for my sake,

you could have told me in advance. But you have to wait til the wedding day,

and I end up seeing Li Ge die in such misery.

And I have to go marry like nothing happened.

You want to tell me that you're the only one who is right in this world.

To disobey your wish, one would pay a drastic cost.

All you want is a subservient king, a real puppet.

Mother, you saw it all with your own eyes.

This is how he treats me.

Are you still staying silent?

- Zhao Gao. - Yes.

The King is not feeling well.

Tell the Minister of Rituals to postpone the wedding.

- Yes. - Even you are forcing me to marry.

Why?

Did you already know? Did you plot it with him to lie to me?

Why?

Is it because I'm not obedient?

You had to tear open this bloody truth?

Mother, why are you treating me this way too?

Why, why?

Have you had enough nonsense?

Today is the King of Qin's grand wedding. All the officials and people of Qin,

and even envoys from other countries are all waiting outside the palace to congratulate you.

I don't care if you married Li Ge,

or Princess Yun Meng,

you have to fulfill your responsibility to Qin.

I will not marry Princess Yun Meng today.

Great Qin will not have a Queen.

Prince Dan fooled you, and Li Ge lied to you.

You are blaming everyone else here, but why don't you ask yourself why you believed them easily.

The way you look so distracted and miserable,

you're not worthy of being my son, nor the King of Qin.

So you don't want to marry?

Fine, I'll fulfill your wish.

Guards, escort the King back to Heroic Six Palace.

Lock up Xianyang Palace. If you gossip about anything,

I'll want your head!

Yes.

Even you think I did wrong?

You didn't do wrong, not at all.

To let the King of Qin mature, any means is good.

But, you knew there could be a better way, but you still did it without care.

As the King of Qin,

he is much more fragile than his father.

As for you, you just want to be a loving mother.

In Zhao, my son and I relied on each other. I took good care of him.

But after we came to Qin, first Zichu

took away three years from my son. You actually inherited the project.

Treat him like a prisoner, manipulate him like a puppet.

Mother.

What is a mother?

She is someone who gives him love and warmth.

But you?

His achievement is based on your counseling.

But if he feels uncomfortable, he immediately thinks of me.

Mother, this word has become the best excuse to shirk from your responsibility.

I will now bring back my right.

He is my son.

He is my precious.

I will not allow you to hurt him for power.

Haolan, you don't understand politics nor power.

Only I can let him become a qualified king.

Don't think too highly of yourself.

Lu Buwei, you struggled for 20 years.

You are finally the most powerful Prime Minister in the world.

But, believe it or not, I can take away your power anytime, leaving you with nothing.

Haolan,

you are not interested in power. Just to vent frustration against me,

will it be worth it?

I have to let you know,

not everything will go your way. You are not God.

What are you crying about?

I'm crying for myself.

So, are you here to kill me, Your Majesty?

Why don't you like me, Your Majesty?

Is it because I look like Huayang, with an alluring face?

So you made up your mind that I'll be unruly and unfaithful?

Is that fair to me?

Li Ge couldn't control her own fate.

I am not different, either.

My Royal Father told me to come to Qin, so I had to obey.

They told me to wear the wedding gown, so I have to sit here.

Now Li Ge is dead,

the next one

would be me, right?

My cannot determine my life, nor can I control my death.

If Your Majesty wants to kill,

then go ahead.

Do you think I won't dare to kill you?

Scram!

Princess, this way please.

Eunach Ling, the King should attend court.

Don't look, get out.

Queen Dowager has said that Your Majesty belongs to Great Qin.

But Great Qin might not be Your Majesty's.

If you don't go to court today, then don't go anymore.

This is exactly what Queen Dowager said, I dare not say any word wrong.

Get away from me.

Your Majesty.

Go away!

Yes.

Crown Prince Dan, this way please.

I've heard that your majesty went to morning court as normal this morning.

Is he still angry?

Please.

Take a look.

Why aren't you looking?

Come, let's look together.

Look, look, look.

I especially prepared this water coffin for Li'ke.

It can preserved the body for thousand of years.

Am I not good to her?

Later I'll have this coffin send to the post station.

Then the two of you can love each other.

Together forever.

You are insane.

What? Using your beloved woman.

To further your own ambition.

But end up receiving nothing.

That's not a good feeling. Is it?

Everything I've done.

Was for Yang State.

Lies. You lied.

You constantly says it's for Yang State. For the people.

In reality it is to fill your own selfish heart.

A mighty crown prince.

Depended on sacrificing an innocent woman.

In exchange for survival.

-Don't you feel ashamed? - Shame?

Everyone can yell at me.

Except for you. You do not have the qualification.

Ten years ago. We were both hostages at Zhao State.

Suffering the same fate. Close like real brothers.

Ten years later, you became the King of the strong Qin.

In possession of the strongest country of the land.

With just one command.

Six states immediately offer their princesses.

What about me? My country has endless disasters.

A royal family full of corruption.

When I open my eyes I only see a broken city.

Poor and weak citizens.

Both of us are full of ambitions.

But my fate is held in your hands.

Even survival is a luxury.

World affairs is unjust. Heavenly laws are unjust.

You are weak. So that you can bully the even weaker Li'ke?

What did she do wrong to be your scapegoat?

Just because you were born in the weak Yang.

You can be justified? Without any guilt?

As a man, as the Crown Prince of Yang.

How can you sacrifice a woman?

If you want something, get it with your own ability.

Great QIn had six generations of great Kings.

Six States had some too.

The winner will be the King. Loser will be the bandit. Once you are dead, the world will merely laugh about it.

Everything you possessed were given by the heavens.

Its the result of the Qin six generations of Great Kings.

You are merely enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Your are not superior to me.

In the current world situation, the times of the big struggle.

Anyone can have the opportunity.

As a Crown Prince, you didn't make the effort.

Yet used the method of thieves and assassins.

Carry out with foolhardiness.

How can you stand up under the heavens?

Let me tell you. I was born in Qin.

Its the Heavens that chose me.

You can slowly watch and see.

How I will realize step by step the great ambitions. That Qin's past Kings weren't able to accomplished.

Who allowed you to leave?

What else do you want?

You want to leave to fulfill your aspirational plan?

You would let me go?

Of course, but I have a condition.

I will agree to any condition.

If these four things happen simultaneously in Qin some day,

I will let you go.

Which four things?

1. The sun is high when heaven rains grains.

2. The black crows turn into white heads.

3. The horse's head grows chicken feet.

4. A wooden statue grows human feet!

When that happens, I will let you return to Yan.

Leave. Let's go to Huayang Palace.

Grand Queen Dowager, Prince Yun Meng's luggage has been prepared.

Grand Aunt, what are you doing?

Send you back to Chu.

No, I don't go back to Chu.

I'm just fine, why would I go back to Chu?

To conquer a man, you are full of vitality and courage,

but you lack experience and luck.

My silly kid. If Li Ge hadn't died,

the King of Qin would have detested and hated her.

Then you would have gotten your chance.

Even ants and insects want to live.

But she had to be so foolish.

How can a living person fight with a dead one?

As it is now, it's not even you,

he won't let Lu Buwei off easily.

Hurry and leave.

Grand Aunt,

let's both go back to Chu.

I'll take you home.

Chu... is not my home.

I spent most of my life in Qin.

My home is here.

I helped you in the hope that by using Chu,

I can regain my power.

To you, to Chu,

I am have any love at all.

You should leave.

Grand Aunt, even though I'm evicted from Xianyang today,

but I shall return someday.

The King of Qin will be my man sooner or later.

Take the princess away.

Grand Aunt, before I come back here,

you must live well, and take good care of yourself.

Your Majesty, this is the palace of Grand Queen Dowager's.

She used Princess Yun Meng to substitute as the bride.

She committed a crime for lying to the King.

From now on, there won't be a Grand Queen Dowager.

Your Highness.

I originally thought Princess Yun Meng, with her beauty and smarts,

would definitely gain favor with the King.

But who would have guessed that

Heaven has another plan, and we couldn't achieve ours.

It looks like I have bad luck.

You are the King's grandmother, he wouldn't dare doing anything to you.

Grand Queen Dowager Xia has been chronically ill,

has he ever visited even once?

The King of Qin is not sentimental.

He will avenge for even a tiny grievance.

Even if he doesn't kill me with his own hands,

he would make sure I live in extreme humiliation for the rest of my life.

Actually, I never wanted to follow Queen Dowanger Xuan's footsteps.

I just wanted to let my sister

and my clansmen to receive some prestige.

So I tried to hold on to power tightly.

With power,

my sister wouldn't have to sell herself.

I wouldn't have to wash clothes in the winter.

The steps I took til now,

I thought I got power.

But power has controlled me.

Now I am a fish about to be flayed by a knife.

My loved ones have left me one after another.

This title of Grand Queen Dowager,

it has led to my sister to die on her own,

let the entire Mi clan to be eliminated.

The glory that I sacrificed everything for,

how can I lose it so easily?

Even if I die,

I will still be the Grand Queen Dowager.

Forever.

Your Highness!

Men! It's terrible!

Grand Queen Dowager... Your Majesty!

Look.

Order the physician right away.

Hurry!

I won't let her die.

I want her to live.

Live well.

Haolan, Huayang drank poisoned and committed suicide.

Zheng'er has ordered the physicians to revive her,

and even sealed off all the windows and doors with wooden boards.

He only left a small gap,

to bring in food daily.

I already know of all these.

When Grand Queen Dowager Xia heard about the recent incidents,

she immediately coughed blood. She won't make it.

Let's go with me to Hope Peace Palace.

Haolan, he won't even show mercy to Grand Queen Dowager Huayang.

Will he let Lu Buwei off?

Your sword skill is now far better than mine.

Starting tomorrow, you can study the book of war.

Queen Dowager.

Mother.

Mother?

- Zhao Gao. - Yes.

Has the messenger from Hope Peace Palace been here yet?

Yes.

Within two hours,

your biological grandmother sent six eunuchs

to plead to see you for the last time.

But you are practicing archery?

Mother, do you remember how she humiliated both of us back then?

I haven't forgotten.

But, you are the King of Qin!

You've neglected your biological grandmother.

Just for the lack of filial piety,

it's enough for you to be the target of everyone, to be denounced in speech or in writing.

Such arrogance.

How can you become the sovereign of the world?

I only see a bullying gangster.

Even if you win the world, you would keep it for long.

She's dead, it's useless to talk more.

Fine. After the Grand Queen Dowager's funeral,

I will move to Yong City

and never to return to Xianyang.

You can do whatever you want as King.

Mother!

Your Majesty, Lao Ai won merit for guarding you,

I want to promote him has palace commander.

You want to go to Yong City,

is this what you'll say to me for the last time?

It's clearly Lu Buwei's mistake.

But she wanted me to marry the Princess of Chu.

Yes, I'm the King of Qin and need to consider the overall good.

Everyone can say this about me.

But she is my own mother.

Why won't she say even one gentle word?

Even if like I was a child, when she coaxed me?

But now I've been forced by Lu Buwei into a dead end,

She will just go to Yong City, leaving me here.

Why?

Why?

This is a betrayal. She has betrayed me.

Your Majesty!

Scram!

You all scram!

I am the real King of Qin.

I will not need anyone anymore.

Why are you so cruel, and left Zheng'er on his own?

There is still time for you to get off the carriage.

You said you'll build an orphanage in Yong City.

It will house orphans and abandoned enfants.

You also want a pharmacy and clinic to treat the sick.

Without me, how can you do any of it?

Zhang'er is pitiful. He lost his father,

and now, even his mother won't care for him.

Xiaochun,

he is the King of Qin.

Your Majesty, Lord Chang An (Chengjiao) is commanding an army to attack Zhao.

He is beginning his revolt from the county of Tunliu.

Deputy General Lao Ai beheaded its military official.

He had planned to arrest Lord Chang An and bring him back to Xianyang.

But he (Lord Chang An) escaped during the journey and died in the chaos.

The corpse has been transported to Xianyang, awaiting your order.

What about Chengjiao's family?

We have captured his wife, concubines, and about 100 servants.

They are now in prison waiting for trials.

What about Lord Chang An's son and daughter?

An old servant took him to escape, but the boat capsized in the middle of river.

We have no further news.

They have committed a crime of treason and that cannot be tolerated.

By the way, why hasn't Lao Ai come back?

Your Majesty, as soon as the General returned to Qin, he went to Yong City

to pay respects to Queen Dowager.

Queen Dowager has a decree!

Lao Ai has earned merit for suppressing the rebellion.

He is therefore promoted to be the Duke of Chang Xin.

He is endowed with the land of Shanyang.

Lao Ai was first promoted as palace commander,

then he earned merit following General Meng,

and was dispatched to Zhao to pacify a rebellion.

For pacifying one rebellion, he becomes a duke. How luck is that!

He is young, handsome and dashing. One day, he served the Queen Dowager

and was able to rely on a small accomplishment to get his meteoric rise in ranks.

He was a nobody.

How long has it been?

Now, he has guards and followers in excess of a thousand, with numerous boy servants.

He can even match the Prime Minister.

That's the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Lu.

Guards.

Physician Wang, you are greatly indebted to the grace of the nation. Yet you never thought of repaying it.

You are gossiping and slandering the current sovereign Queen Dowager.

Take them down now to prison and wait for trials.

Yes.

Prime Minister! Prime Minister! What I said is all true.

If you go to the streets of Xianyang, you would hear it being said everywhere. It's being spread all over Xianyang!

Great Qin has had many wars. Just in Yong City, we've taken in over 300 orphans.

Every little mouth wants to eat.

Even if you have mountains of gold and silver, you won't be able to fill their hunger.

We have enough food, but the roof of the lodging is leaking in the rain.

The new quarters will take three more months to construct.

It's only April, but the weather suddenly turned cold.

I'm afraid the children won't be able to stand it.

Besides preparing for the new quarters, we should collect lots of heavy clothing

for emergency needs.

We are so busy.

A bunch of bastards

even spread rumors about you.

What do they say?

Queen Dowager, the Duke of Chang Xin is here.

Queen Dowager, I've brought them.

Ziyin, Ziqin, pay respects to the Queen Dowager.

Come over.

Take them to the orphanage.

Raise them like regular kids.

Haolan, you cannot keep them.

There are all orphans in the orphanages in Qin.

They have no one, the parents are dead, aren't they orphans?

No, that's not good.

There are too many people in the orphanage. It's best to keep them here.

- Prime Minister, you can't go in. - I have urgent matters to report.

Tell all the servants to leave.

Who are they?

I adopted them from the orphanage.

In the future, they'll be my children.

Your Highness, taking care of orphans and adopting descendants are two entirely different matters.

Your son is the King of Great Qin.

You can leave.

Let's go, slowly.

Prime Minister Lu, what are you doing here?

Great Qin is established on military honors. You earn promotions based on your victories.

Your Highness favors Lao Ai.

You have promoted him so fast, it has led to much talk in and out of the court.

Talk about what?

They say you are having an affair with Lao Ai.

I want him to have the power.

What are you saying?

What can you do to me?

Haolan!

Only women have been asked to stay chaste.

We've hardly seen a man to stay unmarried for his deceased wife's sake.

When they marry a pretty wife again,

why don't we see righteous scholars call him a slut?

All the nobles and high officials

all are surrounded by beautiful women.

I have the same power.

I haven't selected beauties like the Kings,

but they already give me the title of a sexual deviant.

Lu Buwei, listen well.

Even if I were not the Grand Queen Dowager of Qin,

just as a regular woman in Xianyang,

after my husband died, I have the same right to seek happiness again.

You are crazy!

Why is the Prime Minister so upset?

When I talk with the Queen Dowager, you don't interrupt.

I'm letting him to have the same power and respect as you.

No, he will even exceed your prestige.

He'll replace you to become Qin's number-one minister.

Your Highness, don't forget what I said to you before.

I hope you won't regret in the future.
