The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 60

I hate evil women like you.

If you dare to come a step closer,

I will take your head!

- Watch out! - Protect the King!

Let go of me!

This way!

After them!

Yes!

Chase after them! Leave no one alive!

[ Great Jade Gate ]

Leave now.

Yes.

Dowager Queen arrives!

How is the King?

The doctor has already taken a look. His majesty only received superficial wounds.

He has taken his medicine and fallen asleep.

I just heard that his majesty was wounded.

- I want to help... - So what if you see him?

I will take a look.

- Wait - Are your eyes... miracle medicine?

Stop crying.

I really despise people who put on an act.

You're perfectly fine as is,

why are you learning to be weak?

This is a medicinal soup I made myself.

Oops, I accidentally spilled it.

His Majesty is currently resting, please do not disturb.

Do you not want your lives?

Greetings to the Empress Dowager.

You princesses are all here for the king?

It's all my fault just now.

I accidentally ran into the princess and spilled the medicine.

Thus she became angry.

I beg Your Majesty to not be upset.

Your Majesty, I spilled the medicine.

I don't like her. Please punish me if you must.

His majesty is alright, just sleeping soundly right now.

Princesses, please go back.

You will be able to see him tomorrow at the banquet.

Yes.

Empress Dowager, there were a total of twenty-eight assassins.

Other than the one who escaped, all others were captured.

Right now we are still combing for the last one.

We will definitely capture him.

The ambassadors were escorting the princess to Xianyang.

The assassins could be related to them.

You should be extra vigilant.

Yes.

Elder Brother.

I can't even see the king's face clearly.

Lu Buwei told my mom to sit to my left.

That's already expressing her attitude.

Looks like your coming to Qin will not be fruitful this time.

It's okay!

If you're not picked, we'll just return.

All right?

Even though I am from Chu,

I spent most of my life in Xianyang.

I've already forgotten the beautiful dances of Chu women.

Yun Mo, can you dance a song for me?

The Han Kingdom princess really understands.

She is currently playing the zither for you,

you should dance.

They say that great beauties come from Chu,

and that they are very skilled in dances that accentuate their slim waists.

Seeing this today, I am amazed.

The women from Zhao are very good at tip-toe dances.

They attracted Shouling to visit Handan just to learn how to walk like them.

However, for this type of slow dancing,

I think that Chu's thin waist dance is the better one here.

I think that Chu's thin waist dance is the better one here.

Your majesty,

If I were you, I would open my eyes wide to take a look.

If you miss this one opportunity,

you would be picking your queen blindfolded.

Your majesty, after all this,

this Princess Meng is still the most beautiful and graceful of them all.

Your majesty, the princesses from all six kingdoms have all arrived.

Please take a look. The first is Princess Zhao.

Her name is Zhao Xue. Her movements are graceful, and her zither skills are touching.

The second is the princess of Wei.

Wei?

Is Mister Longyang really the King of Wei's lover?

Does the King of Wei really like men?

Mother, I have chosen my queen.

Crown Prince of Yan, who is this girl?

She is a princess of Yan.

- No. - Li Ge...

is my cousin and a royal descendant of Yan.

She has been inseparable from Princess Bing since childhood.

If the King marries Princess Bing,

then Li Ge would be the Side Consort. (Higher in rank than regular concubines.)

Is that so?

She pretends to be the princess, that's lying to the King.

So what if she was a princess or not a princess.

As long as I'm happy, then who she is,

what wrong she's done, none of that is important.

Mother, I want her as my Queen of Qin.

Queen Dowager, please remember what I said to you, and it's best to consider the overall good.

Princess Yun Meng's dance was truly astounding.

Nongyu was also excellent in playing the zither.

Servants, give my gifts to all the guests here.

Thank you for coming from afar.

Yes.

Thank you, Queen Dowager.

I originally thought I'd be staying in Xianyang until Winter Solstice.

I especially prepared shoes and socks for the King to welcome the winter.

It's too bad that I'll be going back tomorrow.

I'll probably never have the chance again.

Queen Dowager, please allow me to offer the gifts now to show my sincerity.

Princess Nongyu, you're thoughtful.

I know I don't have the fortune to serve you, and will be going home tomorrow.

Before I leave, please accept this goodwill gift.

Your Majesty, can you really bear sending me away?

Guards! Guards!

Zheng'er!

How dare you to assassinate the King?

Are you alright?

Mother, don't worry. I'm fine.

We're both from Han, but you've abandoned your home country.

The King of Han is incompetent, and caused my sister to die in a foreign land.

I don't have any father-son relationship with me, and don't mention the home country.

You are actually incited by him to assassinate the King of Qin.

It's like a praying mantis trying to stop a carriage. You have no idea how feeble you are.

I knew this was a death mission but I still had to come.

It's because I am a princess of Han.

How can I see Qin's army slaughter the people of my country?

Your Majesty, it doesn't matter if you believe or not,

from the moment of our first meeting,

I already fell for you at first sight.

I really wish that I could leave my name engraved in your heart.

Too bad that I can't. I'll never be able to.

Farewell, my King of Qin.

Mother, I'll escort you back to the palace.

Take her out. Leave in the open for three days.

[ Huayang Palace ]

Pack your luggage and return to Chu first thing tomorrow morning.

No, I don't want to return to Chu.

Didn't you really yearn to go back to Chu?

Now the King has selected his Queen.

Are you planning to stay as his concubine?

Stop.

The other princesses and their envoys have not left Xianyang.

Any misstep in decorum will quickly spread throughout the six states.

You can't be the queen, but you don't want to become a joke, either.

Obey me and return home. Let your father select a good marriage for you.

I heard the Crown Prince of Qi is a scholar warrior that is close to your age.

Just because Qin is strong, we have to be submissive and let him choose from our princesses.

Weifeng far surpasses that of the Zhou royal family in the past.

But I am not an ordinary woman.

The Chu State is not weak.

The King of Qin wants to do as he places. It's not so simple!

Then what do you want to do?

Unless he never has a queen,

otherwise, I will definitely become the Queen of Qin.

Yun Meng.

[ Hope Peace Gate ]

Your Highness, Grand Queen Dowager has been sick since last year.

She's been sustained by drinking a concoction of ginseng and lingzhi mushrooms.

She was stricken further after she heard the bad news.

She won't take her medicine.

Leave.

Yes.

Your Majesty, Queen Dowager has send someone to rush you several times.

It looks like Grand Queen Dowager Xia is very ill this time.

Your Majesty, Grand Queen Dowager is waiting for you.

What a coincidental timing.

She is clearly afraid that I'll blame Han and will attack Han.

Go back.

Where's the King?

Your Highness, I already sent people to ask him to come.

Haolan, is that you?

Yes, Mother. I'm here.

Where is Zheng'er?

Such a rascal Zheng'er is.

He still holds the grievance from childhood and won't forgive me, the grandmother.

Counting every penny and cent.

He is just like his father.

You didn't know this.

When Zichu was six, he was beat up by his elder cousin.

Twenty Five years later, he punished his cousin by sending him to guard the frontier's border.

Zheng'er is not as good as his father on this.

When his father punished people, he actually gets thanked.

Zheng'er, on the other hand, shows his likes and dislikes clearly on his face.

He is not as tempered as his father yet.

Mother, I've already sent for Physician Yin. Just wait.

Is Lu Buwei here?

He is waiting right outside.

Go... tell him to come in.

Yes.

Greetings to Grand Queen Dowager.

Han is after all my home land.

The Qin of Han is foolish, actually ordered Nongyu to assassinate the King.

It almost led to a great disaster.

Please consider my sake, don't immediately attack Han,

so that the people of Han won't curse me

and won't give me peace in my illness.

Once I shut my eyes and die, I won't be able to do much more.

Grand Queen Dowager, rest assured that Great Qin won haphazardly send out the army.

The Princess of Han died of a sudden illness.

Chenjiao is young and flamboyant, easily influenced by others.

He often does something ridiculous.

To prevent him from making trouble in Xianyang,

send him to live in his feudal territory.

Lord Chang An (Chenjiao) is still young, needs

Your Grand Highness to personally teach him.

If we suddenly send him to his feudal territory, people will say the King is intolerant.

In my opinion, it's better to wait a few more years

so that he gets more experience.

Prime Minister Lu!

Chenjiao and Zheng'er are biological brothers.

There is no one else closer to them in the blood line.

If he is nurtured well, he will become the King's great support.

You guard so carefully against him,

do you want to sow discord between the brothers?

Please stay clam, Grand Queen Dowager.

You just said Lord Chang An is young and unrestrained.

Whether maids in the palace or prostitutes in Xianyang, he would take them.

With such an unruly behavior, he will completely lose guidance if he is sent to his feudal territory.

When Chenjiao was only 15, he was sent as an envoy to Han.

Without losing a man, he was able to acquire 100-li land.

Being so outstanding, he probably has raised some jealous caution among some people.

Prime Minister Lu, isn't that so?

Haolan, Jiao'er is the only one I don't feel reassured about.

Won't you agree to this minimum request from me?

Ang Yi is too far.

Let's give him Hao Jing.

Then whenever the King misses him, he can order him to come easily.

Mother, you should take your medicine now.

Haolan, thank you.

I know how my illness is.

Let's complete the wedding for Zheng'er soon.

I also have one more matter that must be accounted ahead of time.

I want Du Dong

to be where I'll be buried.

Looking westward from Du Dong is the King Xiaowen's grave.

I will obey Dowager Queen's wishes.

You go ahead and make preparations for it.

The horrid King of Han has made me a traitor.

Mother.

You may leave now.

Yes.

Mother.

Back then I already was engaged for marriage.

Han King killed my finance.

Use my parent's lives to threatened me to come to Qin.

Use my parent's lives to threatened me to come to Qin.

For all these years.

There were songs and dances at Huayang Palace.

But I lived every day with tears down my face.

Is there even one person remembers that?

No, not even one person.

When Zichu became the King.

They acted like dogs crawling to my feet.

Asking me to get a position for Han State thru the inner palace.

Asking me to get a position for Han State thru the inner palace.

I understand.

No, you don't understand.

My entire sad life.

It is all due to the fact that I am only a woman.

If I were a man,

I would rather take up a sword and go into battle.

Rather than live having to pander to others!

Yet I'm still discarded like a worn shoe by my homeland.

But that is the land of Han,

where I was born and raised.

My parents

and clansmen were all Han's people.

Even thought I knew the King of Han was incompetent and corrupt,

but I love my homeland

and would do everything to protect it.

But this stupid King of Han has pushed into unforgivable purgatory.

But this stupid King of Han has pushed into unforgivable purgatory.

He's also turned Han into the target practice for the King of Qin.

He's also turned Han into the target practice for the King of Qin.

A single person's stupidity will actually

cost a thousand people's blood as the price.

cost a thousand people's blood as the price.

Grand Queen Dowager, please stop talking.

I promise not to blame Han's people,

and we won't attack Han.

That'll just be surviving on last remaining breaths.

Even though the King of Han is despicable,

Lord Anguo was worse by 100 times.

Mother,

I always thought you were in love with father.

In love?

A man who treats me like nothing for dozens of years.

Would I shed tears for him?

Haolan.

I will tell you the truth.

When I heard of his passing. I laughed until my tears came out.

But for Zichu's sake, I had to acted

like a virtuous and loyal mother.

In order that he can get into the throne with dignity.

To be buried in Du Dong,

is for my only wish to look eastward at Chi Yang.

My Zichu.

My son.

He is buried there.

Mother.

You normally have more resolve than me.

You saw what happened with Lu Buwei before.

He is very ambitious and scheming.

When you have the opportunity in the future.

You must get rid of him.

For Zichu. Also for the Great Qin. Haolan, promise me.

Come. Everyone, come and take a look!

Who are you? How dare you stop the carriage of the Princess of Yan!

Tell Li Ge to come out.

Princess Yun Meng.

I'll ask you a few questions.

Please ask.

Judging on face, who wins?

You win.

Judging on status, who wins?

You are the eldest official daughter of the King of Chu, but I am just Princess Bing's servant.

Of course you win.

Then tell me, who made you so bold?

How dare you covet the position of the Queen of Qin!

Princess Yun Meng.

The King of Qin personally made his decision, it wasn't up to us.

If Qin people hear about your rudeness,

how will they see and treat the people of Chu?

Princess Yu Meng, before Qin finds out, please leave quickly.

What if I say no?

Li Ge, let's go.

Princess Yu Meng, you are too much.

Chu is strong than Yan.

Only a young, insolent King would disregard the greater good to pick Yan over Chu.

Do you believe if I am determined to enter his inner palace,

Do you believe if I am determined to enter his inner palace,

I will become the queen sooner or later?

I'm just throwing down the gauntlet now.

So you won't say I didn't warn you.

You are being a bully.

Stop it.

Don't keep arguing with them, let's go.

Princess, do we go after them?

Where have I seen that tattoo?

I'll go see the King. No, go see Lu Buwei.

Your Majesty!

- Stop. - I want to go in.

Your Majesty! Your Majesty! - Step aside.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Why are you in such a hurry to thank me?

You didn't look so excited even on the day I selected the queen.

The Crown Prince of Yan... He...

Crown Prince Dan?

An hour ago, Qin's guard forced into his lodge and took him away.

Prime Minister Lu, ever since I came to Qin, I've been following Qin's law.

Why are you suddenly using force on me?

How is your life in Qin, Your Highness?

Good.

How is your daily regiment in meals and transportation?

Also good.

Are Qin's people rude to you?

It's all good.

Since everything is good in Qin,

why assassinate the King of Qin?

Prime Minister Lu, what did you say? Assassinate?

I don't know about it.

A real man is responsible for what he does.

The Crown Prince of Yan fails in assassinating the King, and still wants to cling to a marriage accord.

Don't you think it's laughable?

You accuse me of assassination. Do you have any proof?

Once we capture your followers and question them, the truth will be revealed.

- Men. - Present.

Put him in jail to wait for inquisition.

Yes.

Stop.

Your Majesty.

Why are you arresting the Crown Prince of Yan without cause?

Your Majesty, did you know your good friend

wants to kill you as soon as he entered Xianyang?

The King and I are close friends.

Why would I suddenly want to kill him?

Besides, I just entered Xianyang.

I haven't had the time nor the resources, how could I assassinate the King?

I you don't believe me, you can arrest my personal guards and question thoroughly.

But Your Majesty, first someone tried to assassinate you.

Now I am being framed.

I think, rather than an outsider,

you should pay more attention to the trouble next to you.

People say the Crown Prince of Yan is smart and wise, and is courteous to civilian talents.

I think we should add another strength.

He's good at inciting and leading disasters.

Your Majesty, those who bow to you don't necessarily respect you.

Those say pretty promises aren't necessarily sincere.

You are the King of Great Qin.

You should be able to discern real from fake.

We rule by law in Qin.

You arrested the Crown Prince of Yan without proof.

People will not agree with you.

He... I'm taking away.

Whenever you have proof, it won't be too late to accuse him.

Master, why did you so easily let him take Crown Prince Dan?

Aren't you afraid of releasing the tiger back to the mountain?

The King is young and vigorous, revealing himself too much.

If he is not forced to a dead end, he will not admit his mistake.

Lu Ping.

Yes.

Immediately look up someone.

Yes.

How many years has it been since we last saw each other?

You were only 6 years old when I first met you.

You very often bullied by other young people in Handan back then.

Very different from high spirited and vigorous person you are today.

I still remember.

They put me inside a rice bag.

To torture me.

If you didn't come in time.

Now I would be...

a pile of white skeleton.

Your majesty has great blessings. Bad events will turn good even without me there.

Today you protected me, I think that will offend prime minister Lu.

Right now he dominates the court and his reputation is riding high.

If he still harbors resentment...

I will go visit him in person to apologize.

To avoid instigating between your relationship with him.

No need. Let's not speak of other people today.

What about you? Haven't seen you for so long. Did you shooting skills improve?

Would you have a competition with me?

Your majesty, let's do it.

Give him an arrow.

Why was the wedding date set in haste?

Why not wait until next spring to give more time to prepare?

The dowager empress wants to see Zheng'er married sooner.

Already commanded the clerk to pick a fortuitous date.

To show to her in person.

Then why are you preparing these for?

Yan State is thousands of Li's away.

The dowry that Crown Prince Dan prepared for Li'ke.

I already saw them. Really is prepared too hastily.

I prepared these to additionally for Li'ke.

This one is really pretty.

Look. - Let me see.

Who gave waiver on the Princess of Han's corpse?

Grand Queen Dowager pleadedfor a nice burial or Princess Nongyu.

I agreed.

Don't you know Nongyu's crime in assassinating the King is unpardonable?

Keeping her corpse exposed in the open for three days is already too kind.

I don't understand

why do you repeatedly allow without restraint the people like Qionghua?

She has already paid her price in blood.

Are you not satisfied unless her body is hung over Xianyang's gate

and tinge my son's wedding with blood?

Become self sufficient and prosperous. Select wise men as helpers.

Treat people with kindness. Ally other countries in friendship.

Our country will have a solid foundation and withstand any attack.

When that time comes, no matter how strong the Qin army is,

you won't be able to hurt it at all.

These people who rely on a momentary courage

to assassinate the King in order to weaken Qin,

even if they were successful in the assassination,

they could only shake Qin temporarily, not permanently.

On the contrary, if the King of Qin erupts in anger, millions of people would die instantly.

Death and letting a state perish would end in the collapse of the entire kingdom.

Such reckless behavior (to assassinate) is so stupid.

Why would you give sympathy to these people?

Don't they understand such simple logic?

Qionghua knew, but she couldn't change the Zhao royalty's way of living a pleasure-seeking life.

As for Nongyu,

her maternal clan was already arrested three months ago.

If she didn't want to assassinate the King of Qin, her entire clan would have died with her.

Yes,

you are Qin's Prime Minister.

To establish Great Qin and achieve its grand plan,

the cost is innumerable number of heads.

If you were one of those slaughtered souls,

could you still righteously stand here

and say what you just said?

Prime Minister Lu.

We've both been through war and witnesses the losses of life.

Haolan just disagrees with raising wars,

she didn't stop Qin's army from expanding the territory.

To not penalize one poor girl,

it's because she doesn't want to see blood affect the King's wedding.

What's wrong with that?

Exposing the corpse in the open is to serve as warning,

to create shock and awe.

Time will prove to you that you've have made a terrible mistake.

As for the King's wedding,

you're allowing Zheng'er to marry that girl.

Even you couldn't tell that she is really not Yan's royal descendant?

Even you couldn't tell that she is really not Yan's royal descendant?

When our enjoy went to the guest lodge,

he saw Li Ge holding scissors in one hand and fabric in the other

to sew her wedding gown herself.

From that moment, I knew that she was just a civilian girl that came with the Yan princess.

From that moment, I knew that she was just a civilian girl that came with the Yan princess.

The Li Ge that I saw with my own eyes is simply a pure-hearted girl.

Zheng'er likes her, too.

That's enough then.

Xiaochung,

don't you think hairpin will suit Li Ge?

Women are thoughtless.

There'll be a disastrous result. I hope you won't regret it.

Women are thoughtless?

When a country is in trouble, don't they rely on women to marry in an accord to keep peace?

When soldiers fight in the battlefields,

don't they rely on women harvest in the fields for their food?

Besides, am I blocking Qin from invading for more land?

Am I stopping them from their ambitious grand plan?

Even when I disagree with their policies, I still respect their decisions.

But has he respected me?

He can't argue successfully with logic.

So he resorts to bullying again.

So many years have passed, he is still so domineering.

He is just too arrogant!

Then why did you like him back then?

Highly self confident with a strong determination,

this kind of man is charismatic and makes a woman want to conquer him.

But, ultimately he is a killer.

A romantic net can trap him for a while, but not forever.

Unless you can

cut off his limbs,

pull out his fangs.

Let's continue with the selection.

Yun Meng, quick, come and take a look.

What are these things?

Don't you see them?

Mystery scent, bundles of silk, and also furs (from deers) for a couple.

These are the traditional gifts from Qin to its future Queen.

What are you saying? The future Queen of Qin?

Take the princess down to try out the wedding gown.

Grand Aunt, I'm confused.

What are you saying? Haven't the King of Qin already chosen his queen?

- Has he changed his mind? - Princess, come this way please.

Grand Aunt?

Tell Prime Minister Lu,

Chu is very pleased with the bridal gifts.

We're just waiting for his good news.

Yes.

Your Majesty, Prime Minister Lu is here.

Greetings to Your Majesty, may you live forever.

The wedding is about to start.

Why are you here?

I want to prove something to you.

Prove what?

Of course it's about the Crown Prince of Yan's scheme and ambition.

Godfather, today is my grand wedding.

All the ministers of the court are waiting to see the event. I don't want to argue with you.

When you have solid evidence,

I'll take care of it.

Your Majesty, you should pay respect to the Grand Queen Dowager,

and listen to her words of advice.

Alright.

Your Majesty.

What are you afraid of?

You won't even dare look beyond the beautiful exterior to see the dirty reality?

You won't even dare look beyond the beautiful exterior to see the dirty reality?

Lu Buwei, you are impudent!
