The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 59

The citizens of Bashu are always holding a rebellious heart.

If they are able to get the help of the King of Chu, the consequences are unimaginable.

Ba has salt, Shu has grains.

The two lands have joined together with Guanzhong and Hanzhong.

That's why Qin can act like it's high above the other six states.

Soon the grand plan will be realized.

Prime Minister Lü,

are you willing to give up?

Princess Yunmeng of the State of Chu is the most beloved daughter of Queen of Chu.

If the King of Chu is to marry off his daughter, what kind of dowry would be given?

Probably the first one would be the elimination of North-South Alliance against Qin.

Lü Buwei, Lü Buwei. It seems like you have already thought about the Princess of Chu.

You were just waiting for me to mention it first.

You are so cunning.

When is the princess coming to Qin?

Marriage alliance?

It is the King of Han's granddaughter.

The Crown Prince of Han's eldest daughter.

Grand Empress Dowager, you are wishing for the Princess of Han to become the Queen of Qin?

In the current six states, the state of Han is the smallest.

I know that this is extremely difficult for you.

Zheng'er has always listened to you.

I just want for her to have a place in the Qin harem.

About this matter..

Nongyu, come in and meet the Empress Dowager.

Greetings to Grand Queen Dowager.

[ Nongyu, Princess of Han ]

Greetings to the Queen of Great Qin.

Look, how is her appearance?

She looks like her aunt. I remember when I was in Han, Qionghua wasn't even born yet.

Later on, her beauty spread through out the six states.

I just don't know if her niece can compare to how she was in the past.

Grand Empress Dowager, Royal father has said before

Aunt Qionghua wasn't famous because of her beauty.

It was because of her independence and elegant personality.

If we're talking about beauty, I can't compare to Auntie.

If we're talking about personality, I definitely can't compare.

Nongyu.

Do you sincerely want to enter Qin palace?

Empress Dowager, currently the State of Qin is the strongest and State of Han is weak.

If we don't depend on the State of Qin, how can the State of Han survive?

Grand Empress Dowager, can you let me have some time to think about it please?

Okay, please don't disappoint me.

Are you men of Qin?

If you are, just hit me right here.

Princess, that one is the King of Qin.

Did you get a good look? If you have, then leave.

Princess, the King of Qin is rude.

Where did you learn these from?

In Xianyang there are many civilian street performers. Some can turn water into fish and dragons.

Some can transform into birds and beast, swallow the blade and fire.

Like this kind of dance in mid-air, I only learned just a little.

I heard there are many rare items in the marketplace.

Empress Dowager, are you interested?

How about I take you to see it tomorrow?

Empress Dowager, are you not interested?

A man doesn't go fight the war to win victories,

but to learn from showmen from Wei.

You look ridiculous always clinging to a woman's skirt.

Prime Minister Lü, please be careful of what you are saying.

Queen Dowager has a pet to play with in the palace, I can't argue with you.

But if you care about your reputation,

then you shouldn't keep him in the inner palace.

He'll turn into a disaster sooner or later.

Lao Ai.

Prime Minister and I have to discuss something. You should leave.

What do you want me to do?

I want the King of Qin to marry the Princess of Chu.

Did you meet Grand Queen Dowager Huayang?

Chu, Zhao, Wei, Han, Wey want to form a North-South Alliance

to war against Qin.

The King of Chu is the lead organizer. If Qin and Chu ally through marriage, the North-South Alliance will break up.

Qin is the strongest nation in the world.

The six other nations are worried after years of incursions from Qin.

They form the alliance against Qin for self preservation.

It's not something a mere marriage can stop.

Wei is the weakest. We can use the Qin-Chu marriage accord as reason,

force the King of Wei cede the lands of Xu and Yan Lin.

Thereafter, Qin's cavalry will only be 100 li (30 miles) away from Chu's capital.

If the Qin of Chu betrays the accord and join the Alliance again,

Qin can send a massive army and overtake the capital.

Lu Buwei,

do you know what I dislike the most about you?

Whenever profits are mentioned, your eyes sparkle.

You haven't changed your nature of a merchant. Everything you say is calculated.

I know what Grand Queen Dowager Xia is scheming.

Han is small and weak, and has sent over their princess.

It's just a gift.

The King of Qin can accept it if he likes. Otherwise, he can re-gift to someone else.

Zheng'er has to get married eventually, so it doesn't matter who he marries.

The Princess of Chu is a real beauty.

She is also the King of Chu's eldest daughter from his Queen. She is the best choice for a marriage accord.

Then lets have the princesses from all six states here.

What?

In this world it's all up to real strength.

The King of Qin should be so bold to look down at the world.

To rely on marriages to decide on court affairs,

then why do we need the court officials? Why do we still need diplomacy and war?

Listen to me, whether it's the weak Han or strong Chu,

Zhang'er will choose whoever he likes as Queen of Qin.

That's what we'll do. Send the message to all six states.

Don't let me see you in Xianyang palace again.

Look, isn't that the person you like?

Go to him.

Wait, this is what I...

He doesn't care about you. Let's go.

Wait.

Uncle, I am Nongyu, the daughter of Han's crown prince.

We've met at Princess Qionghua's cenotaph.

Princess, you are mistaken.

I'm here at Qin and must become the Queen of Qin.

If you are really the King of Han's youngest son, you should help me.

As a son of a servant girl, I've always been abandoned by Royal Father.

How does a discarded nomad that travels in foreign lands help you?

Even if the entire royal family owes you,

at least Aunt Qionhua did not owe you.

If it weren't for you, you wouldn't still be alive now.

For her sake, please help me.

Sorry.

Let me see.

Truly nice outer appearance.

No wonder was able to entice the mistress of Xianyang Palace.

Get out of here.

What is that look?

He wants to kill someone.

You've been waiting outside Yongmen palace so long, but the Queen Dowager hasn't kept you overnight.

Your Highness, I've never seen you personally ask the oracle. What do you want to know?

I want to see

where Zheng'er's Queen is coming from.

Any result yet?

It's not accurate.

Not accurate. It must not be accurate.

Lao Ai.

What's the matter with you?

Who hurt you?

I'm alright, I'll take my leave.

Qin's law forbids private fights.

Go find out what really happened.

Yes.

Lu Buwei.

Let go of me. How can you barge into my palace at this hour?

Impudence.

I'm here to inspect.

Inspect what?

To check whether you have a handsome young man here/

Go away. Go immediately.

You are so upset.

Do you want the entire Xianyang palace to know that I'm in your bed?

Scumbag.

Guards.

Let go of me. Let go!

In the Chunqio period, Xia Ji was queen for three times, wife for seven times.

It's natural for a civilian woman to remarry after her husband dies.

There's been precedence that a Qin's Queen Dowager seeks happiness from another man.

There was Queen Dowager Xuan, then Queen Dowager Huayang.

Everyone is like this.

Who doesn't want to get Queen Dowager's affection

and rise up in promotions.

Let go.

Look, if I really want to force you, can you resist?

Lu Buwei, you are already the powerful minister of Great Qin. Can influence the power that shake the world.

Yet you have bigger ambition.

You still want to possess the Queen of Great Qin.

It's not called possession.

You were originally suppose to belong to me.

This is called return to its rightful owner.

I am not object at your bid and call.

Regardless of of how many years had passed. You still can not learn how to respect a person.

Respect?

Have I ever forced you these past five years?

Did not. You get mad whenever you want. You also refused to see me anytime.

I always followed your wishes.

I can exhaust everything for the Great Qin

Can break into new territory for your son. Also tolerate your wilfulness.

But there is a limit to my patience.

If you are planning to find a new love and abandon me. You better nip that idea immediately.

Now your position and power.

Regardless of beauties in Great Qin.

Even any beauties under the sky are easily within your grasp.

But I am only interested in one person. Only she will do.

Lu Buwei.

Queen Dowager Xuan's favored Wei choufu, who was only 20 years old.

He was caring and enjoyable to be with.

Why are you so sure that I have to have you?

You can keep searching.

Whoever you find, I'll kill him.

Scram!

Leave! Get lost!

Get lost!

Get lost!

How dare you come again! Queen Dowager ordered you to become the King's guard.

That's already a great honor. Why aren't you satisfied?

I don't want any honor, I just want to stay with the Queen.

Lao Ai, if you are grateful to the Queen Dowager, then you should not hurt her reputation.

[ Yun Meng, Princess of Chu ]

[ Li Ge; Bing, Princess of Yan ]

Why don't we go back. My legs are shaking.

What are you afraid of?

Haven't you heard?

Those Qin soldiers never wear their armor on the battlefield.

One hand holds a decapitated head, the other holds a giant blade,

running in a frenzy after vanquished enemies.

In the whole country, their people will howl and dance as soon as they hear there's a new war.

They want to kill enemies for rewards. And that King of Qin...

What about the King?

I heard that he is tall and stout

with an ugly face, and a body built like a jackal.

He is more vicious than tiger and wolf.

The Queen Dowager Zhao Ji came from a noble family in Zhao.

Her beauty was famous in Handan. How can she bear an ugly son?

No, no, I don't want to marry.

- Stop right now! - Princess, you can't.

It's fine, it's fine.

What is it? Don't be sneaky.

Your Majesty, the Princess of Han arrived at the guest lodge, but when she was notified to enter the palace,

she has disappeared.

Disappeared?

Yes, she ran away.

I would like to see

how far she can run to in the large city of Xianyang.

Your Majesty, Your Majesty, where are you going?

Chase after a rabbit.

Fast, faster!

Miss, we've already looked here. The Princess did not take her identification with her when she ran away.

No inn in Qin will let her stay.

When she can't go anywhere, she will return.

If this news gets to Xianyang palace and the King gets angry, what will Yan state do?

What will I say to the Crown Prince?

If Qin attacks Han, it will be my fault.

No matter what, we cannot allow people to know that the Princess ran away.

- Fast, faster! - Yes.

There are people there. Let's take a look.

Here, have some water.

There's more here.

No one inside.

Where is the Princess of Yan?

I am here, I am the Princess of Yan.

Who are you? How rude you are!

What do you want to do, I am the Princess of Yan.

Who are you?

What do you want?

I want to kidnap you.

You're mad. How can you be so rude?

Mad? Let's go!

Let me go! Who are you?

Let me go! Let me go!

The Princess of Yan pays respect to the King of Qin.

What is your name?

Li Ge.

Why did you run away?

Don't listen to rumors, Your Majesty.

I heard my elder brother was arriving in Xianyang soon.

So I went to meet him. That's all.

Prince Dan of Yan?

Yes.

It's a misunderstand. It's all a misunderstanding.

Misunderstanding. Rise.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Do I look fearsome?

No, you are handsome and valiant,

with an outstanding bearing.

Then why are you shy?

I am in awe of your dignity.

I heard that the six states think of Qin as monsters.

Whenever there is a special holiday, they would post talisman to counter these devils and monsters.

I am the No. 1 monster.

I've never heard of it.

Then you should stay in Heroic Six Palace

and see whether I am really a human or a devil.

Greetings to Your Majesty.

Are you ready?

The newest bronze sword has been molded.

It is so sharp that it is invincible.

Please try it yourself, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, on this armor

I have sewn specially designed steel scales.

When you wear the armor,

no blade and sword can pierce it.

Lao Ai, the King wants you.

Mercy, Your Majesty!

Give a big reward to the armor maker.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

As for him, kill.

Your Majesty!

Mercy, Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, why are you killing him?

If the armor is pierced, then kill the armor maker.

If the sword breaks, then kill the sword maker.

In academics, it's possible to have a tie, but in jousts, someone will win. When the sword maker fails, he can try again.

That's ridiculous. When soldiers fight in battles, who will give you a second chance?

A Qin person will only learn one skill in his life.

The best one can enter the palace and gets wealth and glory.

There is a monthly contest for hundreds of professions.

Great Qin only wants the best and strongest.

By the way, don't the six states want to find our military secrets?

I just told you. You can go back and copy.

Tyrant.

What did you say?

I said you are a tyrant.

I can say it ten or a hundred times, and you'll still be a tyrant.

Take her away and punish her in a boiling pot.

You want to boil me?

Yes, boil you.

If you kneel and beg for forgiveness, I'll let you go.

Start the punishment.

I am the Princess of Yan, you can't do this.

Princess of Yan?

Didn't the Princess of Yan run away?

I am just punishing a disobedient slave.

Start.

Don't you dare getting close to me.

I am a guest of Qin, you can't boil me.

Let me go! No, no...

Beg for mercy.

I am wrong.

What did you say? I can't hear you clearly.

I am wrong.

The King of Qin is merciful. Please forgive me.

That sounds so insincere.

No, no, no.

King of Qin, big brother King of Qin, I know I did wrong.

I will never talk back at you again.

So we so easily call it off?

Then what do you want to do?

At least kiss me, and say you're sorry.

Then you should just throw me in.

Very virtuous. Farewell!

That wasn't sweet enough.

Good.

Let's go back, and you can say sorry with sincerity.

Your Highness.

What are you following me so closely?

I am inside the Xianyang Palace. Where can I run to?

Has the Crown Prince arrive in Xianyang? Has he found the princess yet?

If this continues, they'll find out about me.

Who is she?

She's the princess of Yan.

Let me take a look.

You are indeed a cute girl.

You eyes look lively.

My Royal Father has said that Chu women are beautiful and loving.

But it seems that Yan women are outstanding, too.

But, there cannot be two tigers in one mountain.

I've come to Qin and must become the Queen.

Princess, your beauty is extraordinary and you will surely get your wish.

I won't disturb you, and take my leave.

Princess!

Such a high forehead, shiny skin,

and a pair of lively eyes.

Such a refined and poised bearing

is what a royal princess should have.

Not like me, I am born extravagant.

What do people say about me?

I look so fierce that people fear me.

Princess, when you left Chu, the King said

not to make trouble in Qin's palace.

I was given so many reminders. Who can remember them all?

Princess, there so so many competing beauties from the six states,

even if you ruin my face, so what?

It will just anger the King of Qin, and someone else will win.

Someone else? They won't get to stay with the King of Qin.

Greetings, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, this is not appropriate decorum.

We are not married yet.

Your Majesty, you hurt me.

- Take her away. - Yes.

Who dares?

Your Majesty, do you think Chu can be easily bullied?

After you've conquered Chu's capital, then you can punish me, the Princess of Chu.

Once I conquer Chu, even if you want to become my slave,

I wouldn't want you anyway.

The King of Qin is tightly restrained by many powers.

How can you make such a grand promise?

They say a faraway couple are connected by a single thread.

You've already met?

Yun Meng, why haven't you bowed to the King?

Greetings to the King of Qin. May you live forever.

Let's go!

Follow m.

Your Majesty.

Princess, what do we do?

Greetings to Grand Aunt.

You can all leave.

Yes.

Come over.

Closer.

The King of Qin sent you to Xianyang

to have the two countries reach an accord.

Do you think your ridiculous act will help you return to Chu?

Besides myself, no one can control my fate.

I don't want to marry the King of Qin.

When royal marry, the number-one consideration is what benefit there is.

It doesn't matter what you personally want.

Wipe away your tears.

Smile when you see the King of Qin again.

Understood? If you misbehave again,

I will not show mercy.

Why are you so useless?

When she hit you, you should have cried for help.

I'm your hostage now, not an important guest.

You are my hostage, so only I can touch you.

Whoever touches you, I'll cut off his hand.

What are you looking at? You eyes turn teary so easily.

What else can you do besides crying all day. Useless!

I called you a rabbit, and you really think you're a rabbit?

Let me tell you, if anyone bullies you again,

I'll support you.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, Prime Minister Lu is here.

Godfather, why are you here suddenly?

Have you already seen Princess Yun Meng?

Yes. You are here just to ask about

that woman whose eyes grow on top of her head?

Princess Yun Meng's outstanding beauty is known throughout the six states.

Why don't you like her?

She is born with an alluring look and has an unruly temper.

A harlot just like Huayang and Marchioness Xuan.

I detest the most this kind of women.

You shouldn't judge a person by the face.

Putting aside the matter of selecting the queen,

do you know that Prince Dan of Yan is coming to Qin?

He was going to escort his sister to come to Qin.

Then he postponed because of a rebellion in Yan.

No, Prince Dan is sent by the King of Yan as a hostage prince.

He was also a hostage in Handan. We were neighbors and became friends like brothers.

Later I returned to Qin, and he was also sent back to Yan.

But now he will be a hostage prince in Qin?

This is the fate of a weak country's prince.

Your Majesty, you should keep your distance from him.

Godfather, Prince Dan and I were childhood friends that went through hardship together.

He is also Yan's Crown Prince.

Now that he is a hostage in Qin,

as the King of Qin, I should have a generous kingly bearing to treat him well.

All the heirs to the six states have their respective weakness.

Chu's Crown Prince is an alcoholic, Han's Crown Prince is a coward.

The new King of Zhao is overly suspicious, the Crown Prince of Qi is obsessed with women.

But according to our spies in the six states,

they all praise Prince Dan of Yan as a wise man.

No one is perfect. When everyone praises him, but it's actually this kind of person

who you should guard against the most.

I'm concerned that you will be manipulated by your nostalgic feeling for an old friend.

Godfather, in your eyes, am I so easily fooled

that I can't tell the difference between state and person

like an imbecile?

No more talk. Stop right here.

Zhao Gao.

Quickly pack everything up for the Princess of Yan and take her to the carriage station.

Lu Buwei!

Didn't you just say you'll treat Prince Dan well?

Then shouldn't you let brother and sister reunite?

Escort Li Ge out of the palace.

Yes.

For the last four generations of Qin's king, the power has been spread among ministers.

For several decades it's been frequent occurrences of king killing ministers and ministers killing the king.

Now Lu Buwei's power supersedes the entire country.

When you reach adulthood, do you think he will return the power?

No, it will be another fight over power.

Among the Qin's court,

all the elite warriors groomed by my late father

and others who disliked Lu Buwei have all lost their voices.

There is not a single dissent about him.

What can I do then?

Even the strongest enemy may reveal a weakness or misstep.

It's the same with Lu Buwei.

The more satisfied he gets with holding the power,

the easier it'll be to show his weakness.

Your Majesty.

Aunt Chun.

The Queen Dowager personally made millet cake,

covered with a layer of egg and spread with honey.

You will definitely like it.

I already said not to bother Mother.

Besides, I'm not a child anymore.

Why bring me sweet snacks again?

No matter how old you are,

you'll still be a child in the eyes of your mother and me.

Master Wei, I have brought the medicine you need.

Come with me.

Wei Liao, why are you inciting the King

and deliberately agitate the relationship between him and Lu Buwei?

Everything I've said comes from the bottom of my heart.

To say it plainly, you are avenging for your personal grievance.

The Queen Dowager saved my life. I am very grateful.

I don't harbor any grievance against Lu Buwei anymore.

I just want to repay the Queen Dowager

by counseling the King to reach Qin's grand plan.

What you mean by counseling is to instigate a war between them.

You want them to kill each other?

Lu Buwei has arrogantly held all the power to control the entire court.

Based on the King's personality, he won't tolerate Lu forever.

Why do you care so much about Lu Buwei?

Unless, you want to become the Prime Minister's wife?

What are you saying?

After leaving me, you've had a string of pursuers.

But let me caution you.

Those nobles and officials who ask for your hand

are either considering you are a capable physician

or like how you and the Queen Dowager

and the King have a close relationship.

Don't overestimate yourself

and miss a good life.

Embarrassment turned into anger?

You haven't married for years. Aren't you just waiting for me to revive my career and come marry you?

Impudence!

For so many years, I've blamed you, hated you.

But ultimately I still miss you, remember you, and cannot forget you.

You bothered me first.

Don't think you can cast me away in this life.

Then you can slowly wait.

There's a deer over there!

Your Majesty, these are not our arrows.

King of Qin, do you dare compete with me?

Compete on what?

At dusk, we'll compare who has bagged the most from hunting.

What's the bet?

If you win, I will willingly stay in Qin for the queen selection. But if you lose,

you'll let me safely return to Chu, And you also will swear

that you won't blame Chu for the failed marriage accord.

If I win, you'll definitely scram.

Five for the King of Qin.

Five for Princess Yun Meng.

This fish is also mine, you can't shamelessly deny.

There are seven large lakes in Chu.

Even the smallest Yu Meng lake has a radius of 900 li (about 30 miles).

On the lake there is an unfolding spread of lotus flowers.

There are numerous rare animals and wild beasts in the forests.

Whenever my Royal Father hunts, the carriages are inlaid with jade, the banners are embroidered with pearls.

The grand cavalcade numbers over 1,000 people. This is how a great nation should look like.

Not like you. How is it that the King of Qin has such a shabby hunt?

A great nation?

I can tell you now.

Generations of Qin's kings have never enjoyed such luxuries

But they would never send their daughters away as gifts.

Every inch of the land underneath your feet belongs to me.

So is this fish. Don't touch.

What are you nervous about? I'm not a man-eating she-devil.

I detest the most the vicious kind of women like you.

If you dare get closer even one step, I'll have your head.

Be careful!

Guard the King!
