where magicians perform
their best tricks

and Penn and Teller try
to figure them out.

Now, they usually explain
the act

using some kind of magic code,
so you may hear terms

like "deck switch," "shell,"
"card force,"

and think you know
what they mean.

Maybe you do.
Maybe you don't.

I will tell you right now
I was dead wrong

the first time I heard
"bottom dealing."

Way off on that one.

Yeah, and now the masters
of misdirection themselves,

Penn and Teller!

Tonight anyone who fools
Penn and Teller wins a slot

performing in their long-running
Vegas magic show.

Let's see if our first performer
can do the trick.

- My vision started going south
when I was nine years old,

so I have no sight,
but I don't call myself blind,

because I see things in ways
that other people can't see.

People always want to know

how I can determine
different cards.

My thumbs and my fingers
can feel things

that other hands can't.

I now have ten eyeballs.

I'm a card mechanic.

I demonstrate how many ways
you can be cheated at cards.

A card mechanic is somebody

who controls the outcome
of a card game,

and the techniques
for the card table

are literally a thousand times
more difficult to develop

than the techniques used
to perform card magic.

Ever since I started karate,

people say,
"You're a black belt?

How can you possibly fight?"

I haven't missed a workout
in 45 years and 2 weeks.

And we all have obstacles,
all of us.

You know what I consider
the worst disability of all?

Procrastination and laziness.

Give me blindness over that
any day of the week.

[cheers and applause]

the amazing Richard Turner.

- Penn, Teller, can you join me
at my table, please?

- Certainly.
- Penn over here.

Teller on this side.

Come on.
- Hello, sir.

- Penn, pleasure.

Well, howdy.

crowd: Howdy!

- I love it
when the audience shows up.

- [laughs]

- Well, I'm Richard Turner,
and I represent

why you should never play cards
with strangers.

As you heard,
I'm not a magician.

I'm what's known
as a card mechanic.

But what I do
can appear very magical.

Now, this is not
to fool you yet, gentlemen.

This is just to educate
the audience, so...

When you play poker,
blackjack, bridge,

hold'em, whatever the game,
you want to make sure

the cards are evenly mixed.

This is basic casino procedure,

which is what is known
as riffle.

Riffle.

You're supposed to do
what's called a block cut

or a strip cut.

Another riffle.

A cut.

That is basic casino procedure.

Now, in a private game, that's
where the hustlers hang out.

Here's something you never do
when you play for money.

Never shuffle with one hand.

It makes the other players
nervous.

And when they see you shuffle
with one hand

followed by a one-hand
flip-around cut,

they get up and run.

You're left playing
with yourself.

Right, Penn?
- Exactly. I know that one.

- Now, Penn, how many times
would you say

I shuffled and cut this deck...

- I would say--
- Six or seven?

- Six, seven, yeah.

- Let's see if this deck
is evenly mixed.

Does that look pretty even,
Penn?

Do we have ace through king,
ace through king,

king through ace,
king through ace?

Did I shuffle it back
into perfect numerical order?

- I think you did, yeah.

- We did it, then, Penn.

Thank you.

Penn, would you do me
a favor?

Reach in and pull out a card,
just any random card.

Tell me when you got one.
- I got one.

- All right.

Let's square up this mess here.

I'm gonna show you a few moves.

Hand me the card face up.

- Face up.
- Face up.

Tell the audience
what you picked.

- Seven of hearts.
- Watch the seven of hearts.

I'm gonna show you

how I can magically
keep his seven on top

by dealing underneath
the top card.

Watch face up.

This is called dealing seconds,

but you have to deal the cards
as neatly

as if you're dealing
from the top.

Watch, I'll deal it
in super slow motion.

Super slow motion.

Seven on top.

See, the dealer will hit
the other players.

I'm playing blackjack.
I have a 14.

Watch face up.

See how the card stays
as the second card,

kind of melts through the deck.

Here's one-handed.

Now, when the card
is face down,

when it's face down,

see, you can't tell
you've been swindled.

Isn't that fun?

- [laughs]

- Thank you.

[cheers and applause]

Now, y'all saw that I had
a full deck of cards here.

Penn, I want you to take
this half

and give it a casino wash
face up.

And, Teller, you take this side.

I want the audience to see

cards being
randomly scrambled, mixed,

screwed up
in every possible way you can.

- Okay.
- Got it?

- May I have your cards there,
Penn?

Let's wash those.

Teller, would you wash those
two halves together, please?

Square them up for us, Teller,

and then turn them face down.

And when you're done,

shuffle them
in any fashion you like.

Tell me when you're done.

And when you're done, set them
face down in front of me.

All right.

Penn.
- Sir.

- You are going to be
my interpreter.

- Okay.

- I'm going to ask
a few questions of Teller,

and you're going to tell me
if he nods his head yes

or if he nods his head no.

- Okay.

- If you understood
what I said, nod yes.

- He said yes.
- All right, we're in business.

Have you ever played
in a private game

where it's your deal,

it's Penn's deal,
it's my deal?

You know
what I'm talking about?

Deck is passed
around the table.

- Yes, he knows
what you're talking about.

No, he doesn't play cards.

- Well, he's smart.
[laughter]

All right, now, if this works,
it'll almost look like magic,

'cause it'll appear
as if nothing happened.

I'm going to do the same thing
you just watched.

Riffle.

And once again, you guys
just scrambled these cards.

- We did.
- Riffle.

And then again you're supposed
to do what's called a strip.

Cut.
Another riffle.

And a cut.

Now, we're going to deal
a hand of hold'em.

Penn, you're gonna tell me
how many players

step up to the table.

And, mind you, we're doing this

after the deck has been shuffled
and cut.

- Okay.

- Five, six, or seven.
Pick a number.

- Uh, six.
- Six players.

One, two, three, four, five,
six.

One, two, three...
- Oh, man.

- Four, five, six.

And then we have
what's called a burn,

and we have what's called
the flop.

- Yup.

- Penn, what are
those three cards?

Tell the audience.

- My favorite,
three of clubs,

followed by
the jack of spades

and the king of spades.

- And we have a burn,

and we have
what's called the turn.

What is that card?

- That's the six of spades.

- And we have a burn, and we
have what's called the river.

What is that?
- That's the king of hearts.

- Now, Penn, you can take
any one of these hands here.

Teller, these are yours.

Don't let anyone see
your cards.

And let's see if you--go ahead
and turn over a few hands, and--

- Any hand I want?
- Any hand you want.

- Uh, okay.

I've turned over
the second hand.

- And what do you have?

- I'll turn them all over,
as a matter of fact.

- What the heck?
What the heck?

Turn them all over.
See--and I'll tell you this.

No matter how good
those hands are,

they're not gonna beat
my partner, Teller's hand.

- We got a queen
and a four, so--

- Nothing really exciting.
Would you clear those tables?

- I sure will.
- Clear that table.

All right, let me have
your cards there, Teller.

You can let go.

He was afraid
I was gonna steal them.

Now, once again,
you shuffled and cut.

- Yes, we did.
- Six players.

Let's see what Teller has
in the pocket.

Penn, what is that?
- That's a king.

- And what is that?
- That's another king.

- The nuts.

Once again,
you shuffled and cut.

You chose six players.

And so on that board, we ended
up with four kings, right?

- Yes, we did.

- Well, gentlemen, you can now
go back to your huddle

and see if you can reconstruct,
believe it or not,

the 13 different methods,
techniques, and controls it took

to take
that washed, shuffled deck

to deal that pat hand
to my partner.

Oh, and, Teller,
if I perhaps fooled you

and you want
to communicate with me,

my right ear reads lips.

[laughter]

Anyway, hope you all had fun,

to fool Penn and Teller.

We are a magic double act.

I am very much
the creative force behind...

What you talking about?

- We met because our parents
knew each other.

Initially, it started off
as a bit of a rivalry,

but then we later joined forces
to fight the good fight.

We appeared on season one
of "Penn & Teller: Fool Us."

We didn't fool Penn and Teller
on our first appearance.

I'll be honest;

we're still
absolutely livid about it.

A lot of magicians
try and really show off

with their magic.

We don't do that.

We're much more modest
and down to Earth.

We have a strong ethic--

- But no talent.

- And no success to date.

[applause]

- Here they are now,
literally and figuratively

Young & Strange.

[cheers and applause]

- Ha ha!

- Oh, my goodness!

with double acts is,

you never know
which one is which.

Yes, it is.

- With me, it's easy,
'cause I'm Sam Strange,

and I look like

- Fat Tom Cruise.

- So we are here
in Las Vegas!

- Unfortunately,
our props are not.

They were lost by the airline.

But don't panic,
Penn and Teller.

We are semiprofessionals.

So what we did was find

some very simple objects
here in Vegas

that will act
as a substitute.

- Now, not only
did our props not arrive,

but our glamorous assistant
didn't either,

so I'm not quite sure
who's going into the box.

and exhausting for you

and possibly for you as well.

- I don't understand;
I'm still thirsty.

- Oh.

So here you are again.

What made you guys want
to come back

and try to fool them
this time?

- Well, it was, like,
five years ago, season one,

and to be honest,
it's been eating us alive

that, you know,
we didn't fool them last time.

So we've been
on the actual waiting list

to get back on the show
for a long time.

- And so what would it mean
if you fooled them today, then?

- It would mean a great deal.

It would feel like closure,
I think,

if we were able to fool them
after all this time.

- All right, well,
let's check in with them.

Boys, what do you have to say

to these two
handsome fellas?

- Boy, there's so much good
about this, you know?

Usually, when you do
a box trick--

and this is a box trick--
you start with a box

that looks like it was bought
in the magic store,

and immediately
people just think

the box is where
the magic is.

And in this case, the box isn't
where the magic is,

and it's a cardboard box,
and it looks great.

Also having phony-baloney swords

that don't look like swords

is so much worse

than using
just sharpened dowels.

And it's based
on the Hans Moretti sword box,

and you do a wonderful--
a wonderful trick

that we use a lot,

which is you put the smaller guy
out of sight,

had the bigger guy outside,

so we keep me outside,
who's gigantic,

and we forget that Teller
is smaller than me,

which is another good technique.

It's used
in the Indian basket trick.

And we do a version of this
in a barrel,

but I'll tell you the speed
at which you drive those through

and the energy is terrifying,

because when we do it,
we are not young and strange.

We are old and careful.

[laughter]

We go through
very, very slowly.

So as much as I love you guys,
we--

I kind of hate to say this,

but we think we got it
with the Hans Moretti sword box.

- Do you think that--

Oh, wait.
Oh, God.

- Oh, no.

- Aw.

was when I was 12,

and from there, did events

all around, you know,
Connecticut.

When I went to college,
I studied environmental science

with a focus in green energy.

After graduating, I decided
to do magic professionally.

I got a job as a bartender

and started doing magic
behind the bar

using, you know,
martini glasses, lemons,

and then from there,
sort of developed, you know,

my full show.

And I also perform
at The Magic Castle

in Los Angeles,
which is really fun.

There are very few
bar magicians in the world.

I am part scientist,
part comedian,

part bartender,
and a lot of magician.

And you add all those
together...

meeting all different types

and as a magician that performs

The one I hear most

and how that really sticks
with a person.

I'm sure you can empathize;
I know I can.

And heartbreak,
it's hard to talk about,

so let me show you.

and we see the world differently
through, you know, female eyes

a different way of doing magic.

And then I heard you've gone
to magic camp?

- Yeah, I'm actually really
kind of excited to tell you

that one time, we had T-shirts

that did say, "One time
at magic camp," so...

- Aw! Well, see?
There you go.

- Those did exist, yeah.

What I love about this is,

you work it
just out of your purse,

which you have on you,

and it could play
any size theater in the world.

That's just a wonderful thing
about it.

I mean, you're taking
a torn-and-restored paper,

which is usually a newspaper
or a ticket

or some sort of jive thing
that you try to give meaning to,

and you've given real meaning
to it.

But more than giving it
real meaning,

you've done something

that everybody's always trying
to do in magic

and never can do,

and that is having
the magic happen

right in an audience member's
hand.

I mean, if Teller were
a citizen,

which of course he's not,

he would have considered that
to be the absolute.

Magic happened in his hand,
never left his hand,

and absolutely beautiful.

The whole routine
is just wonderful.

We think that we've got it from
the torn-and-restored thing,

but we got to say,

even with that,
we really love you.

last year,

I didn't get one number right,
and I thought that was funny,

because I'm sort of
a magic mind reader.

So with that in mind,
I used to carry the ticket

as a joke in my wallet,
got tired of that,

threw it in this box,

and it has sat in my desk
at home

until fate intervened.

To come here tonight, I needed
to get some things from my desk.

On top of those things
was this box.

I opened it up,
and inside was that ticket.

I felt that meant something,

so I brought it with me
here tonight, Penn and Teller.

I'm going to set it right here,

underneath
our surveillance camera.

That way, everybody can keep
their eye on it at once.

Now, our six spectators,

Maybe you don't want to move.

Maybe you're feeling lazy.

Don't let that influence you
tonight, okay?

That would severely cut down
the numbers you choose.

This is perfect.

We're just going

I brought a lottery ticket
from last year, my birthday,

which has been in full view
the entire time.

Now, check this out.

Inside is one ticket.

But I want you to take
a close look

at those numbers.

If I say your number, please
hold your ball in the air.

Do you realize the odds

of fooling the two best minds
in magic?

It's unbelievable.
- Yeah.

And did you grow up
with a lot of magic

where you're from?

- I grew up in a little town

that was sort of
"financially challenged."

And magic kind of became
an escape.

This was before the internet
and everything,

so I had to, you know,
learn from books.

There's no Hogwarts.

I went to Magichigan State
instead.

- [laughs]

- And I did my best,
you know, with magic,

and by the time--
I couldn't not do it.

I became, you know,
financially stable doing magic,

and I got my dream.

My dream chose me, so...

- Nice.
- Yeah.

- Okay, it's time to go
to the boys.

- Okay.
- Boys?

- You know this is a--

it's a little, bitty,
tiny trick,

and you made it big and enormous
and wonderful, you know?

Just gone to huge size
with the people up there,

and the selection is all fun.

Everything is just terrific
all the way through.

You know,

Teller's mentor
used to always say

that prediction tricks
in magic

are always time reversals.

And you've done something
even hipper than that,

because by not saying,
"I'm going to predict

what this is going to be"

but rather, "This is my
lottery ticket from a year ago,"

you make it
much more interesting.

It just makes the mind

tangle up a little bit
in a really good way.

But there's a term that's used

as an insult in magic,

and I'm going to use it now,
talking about you,

but I'm going to say
carefully first

I don't think it's this way
for the audience.

This is only this way
for us.

There's no mistakes in this.
It's too perfect, you know?

But the audience still has
a few outs.

We don't.

We know that certain things

So tonight they're gonna
teach you a trick

that will help you mess
with your friends.

- Hi.

Here's a trick
that you can do at home.

Hope you got your DVRs running,

'cause we'll give you
the punchline at the end.

All you need
is a deck of cards,

the punchline we'll give you,
and a friend.

I'll play the part of you.

Teller will be my friend.

Hey, friend,
want to see a card trick?

Why don't you pick a number
between 1 and 10?

7.

What I want you to do
is take the deck

while my back is turned,
count down seven cards--

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

look at that seventh card,
and remember it.

Can you do that right?

Okay, I'm going
to turn my back.

Count down seven cards.

Look at the card,
but don't let me see it.

You counting them down?

Look at that card,
and memorize it.

You got it clear
in your head?

Now put it anywhere you want
in the deck.

And put those other cards
on top,

and give them a shuffle,
if you want.

You watch these magic hands.

I just take the deck,
tap it once,

and your card appears
right on the top.

Was your card
the eight of clubs?

[laughter]

It--it wasn't?

Well, I--I guess
I'm a failure, my friend.

I'll never be
as good as you are.

I couldn't find the card
at all.

Well, let's do
something else fun, okay?

Let's watch
"Jane the Virgin."

- [sighs]

- I'm sure Jane said
nice things,

but I'm still rattled,

so I can't pretend
to be touched right now.

Do you think Chuck did it?

- I don't know.

But is this your card?

- See? See?

I did the trick right!
See? See?

I'm the winner.

[cheers and applause]

Now, we got our friends
at "Jane the Virgin"

to make that video
for you,

and you record it right here
on your DVR.

Then all you've got to do
is have a deck of cards

with the three of clubs
on top,

and you'll do what's called
a card force.

Now, you ask your friend
to name a number

between 1 and 10.

He names...6.

Now, the card you want,
the three of clubs,

is already on top,

but I demonstrate
how to count to six.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

And look at this card, 6.

What I've done
is put the three of clubs

six down in the deck.

It's now the sixth card.

The force is complete.

I now turn my back and ask him
to count down six cards.

I know he's gonna pick
the three of clubs.

He looks at that card.
He's got the three of clubs.

Tell him to put it
anywhere in the deck.

You don't care
where he puts it.

Put the other cards
on top.

Have them shuffle until
the proverbial cows come home,

even if he doesn't shuffle well.

Then take them like this.

Then you do one tap
and get the wrong card.

Seven of hearts,
is that your card?

Let him gloat.

He who laughs last
laughs best.

Now change the subject
kind of nonchalantly.

Well, I'm a failure.
Let's do something else fun.

Instead of just turning on
the TV,

you play the DVR

with a clip that we're
going to give you right now.

Here's where you start
playing it for your friend.

Go.

- [sighs]

- I'm sure Jane said
nice things,

but I'm still rattled,

so I can't pretend
to be touched right now.

Do you think Chuck did it?

- I don't know.

But is this your card?

[dramatic musical flourish]

- Ha, ha, ha!

When that's over,
it's your turn to gloat.

Gloat, gloat, gloat, gloat,
gloat, gloat, gloat.

You fool!

Gotcha, gotcha,
gotcha, gotcha.

Fool, fool,
fool, fool, fool!

Gotcha!
