The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 54

Haolan, I want to rush to the Southern Province immediately.

Actually, the populace of the Great Qin

would naturally require His Majesty to go save them. Come with me.

Announcing the arrival of Her Highness!

Why is the Queen here?

The plague at the Southern Province is spreading.

There are quite a number of soldiers from the army that Your Majesty has sent to maintain law and order who are infected by the plague.

Your Majesty, immediately, please send some men to escort Xiaochun and some medicine there.

I knew of this matter already, and have sent men over there earlier.

Some physicians from Xianyang with some vital medicines have been escorted over to the Southern Province.

Your Majesty, if the Great Qin's physicians know how to treat it,

why are nine out of ten wards empty? Even so, how did the plague spread to the soldiers' camp?

Let me go.

The highest ranks of the Great Qin are all over there at the Southern Province.

Don't tell me the sum total of all of them is not comparable to you alone?

Your Majesty.

I have said this matter is fully in the hands of Prime Minister Lu and General Bai Zhong.

Everyone else should not comment further. Leave.

The plague at the Southern Province is pervasive and spreads widely. A big number of the populace has been infected and some have already died.

Your Majesty, how could you still be in the mood to appreciate song and dance entertainment from the beauties?

Xiaochun offers herself voluntarily to go into the risky areas for the assignment.

Instead of providing more protection, you are reprimanding her?

Is there such a logic in the world?

Queen!

Your Majesty, the plague is (spreading) like fire. It's important to save people.

Please agree to send some men to escort Xiaochun and medicines to the Southern Province immediately!

You don't need to say further. This matter has already been handled well.

Queen, you are so concerned about the Southern Province. Who exactly are you worried about?!

Why have all of you stopped dancing? Continue to dance!

Continue to dance. Dance!

Your Highness!

Li Haolan!

You can forget your promise to me.

But you are King of the Great Qin. You must remember your ministers and your populace at all times!

Right now, they are earnestly awaiting help from Your Majesty!

If you indulge in peace and entertainment and have no regard for what's at hand,

this great land will soon be ruined!

Haolan.

From today onward, there will be song and dance within the six imperial palaces.

Instead, I want to see

if my Great Qin will be ruined because of this!

Dance!

Haolan.

The Southern Province has been sealed. Without His Majesty's order,

I can't enter. What do we do now?

- I will escort you to the Southern Province personally. - What?

Let's go. Let's go and help Lu Buwei.

[ The Southern Province of Qin ]

My son.

This is a heat plague. We must use the Zhibao Pill to treat it. [ The Governor Manor ]

Orally consuming the Zhibao Pill can only prevent being infected by the plague. [Zhibao Pill is a traditional medicine for relieving fever, detoxification and preventing infection]

For those who have already been infected, what do we do?

Moreover, the symptoms of this plague are different from those plagues of the past.

How do you know this is a heat plague?

Once a person is infected, he would show symptoms of intermittent fevers and chills all over his body.

If this is not a heat plague, what is it?

If you don't think that the Zhibao Pill will work, tell us a way to treat it!

There is no cure. Whoever is infected will die.

The Southern Province will sooner or later end up as an empty city.

We would be better off if we seal off the Southern Province and retreat back to Xianyang.

Arguing among yourselves. None of you have a way to treat the plague.

How could all of you be renowned physicians? Just a bunch of useless elders.

Master.

General Bai has sent an order for every infected person

to be buried alive.

B*stard.

In doing so, he is not treating the plague. He is instigating a rebellion!

Master.

Master!

Prime Minister Lu...

Master!

Per the General's order, do not enter because there are patients of plague inside.

I am the wife of Prime Minister Lu. Move aside now.

That's Miss Bai. You go stop her, I'll inform General Bai.

- Lu Buwei! - No, Lady. Don't...

- Lu Buwei!. - Lady, you can't get close.

Let go!

Lu Buwei!

This is the anti-plague medicine made by Physician Yin. It should work.

You've recovered?

Ling'er,

I thought you are the person who most expect me to die.

I thought so too, but as soon as I heard that you were in Southern Province,

my first wish was to bring the medicine to you.

I've already dissolved the medicine into water. You should drink it now.

The rest I'll pour into the city's wells

to save...

Today is Crown Princess's birthday. You bought the hairpin

for her, right?

It's just a hairpin. Nothing special.

Ling'er.

If

you can help the people survive in Southern Province. Would you like to restart with me?

Really?

You really mean it?

Lu Buwei.

Right from the start, you've never liked me.

How do we restart then?

We can worry about that later. This medicine will help the entire city.

Come, give it to me.

You are lying to me. You are lying to me.

Ling'er.

Whatever you want to hear, I'll say it.

But if you don't believe, what can I do?

Why? You clearly know you can't get it.

It's just an illusion. You know you can't get it.

Whatever I want, I will always get it.

Power, money, as long as I'm alive,

not to mention three years, even ten or thirty years,

cost is no concern, using any means,

I will definitely get it.

I never realized

you are so persistent, but won't even cast me one glance.

Are you afraid that someday

you'll regret what you're saying today?

You want to hear the truth?

I will boldly go forward on my own,

even if my body is broken and bloody, I shall not regret.

Even... Even the people of Southern Province can be ignored?

Ling'er, you are kind. If I die,

you will definitely give the medicine to the people to save them.

- Ling'er, Ling'er, why are you here? - You are crazy!

Ling'er!

Elder Brother, he is crazy and he is making me crazy.

Ling'er!

You recognize me? You remember me now?

I won't accept it. I will not accept it.

Lu Buwei, I'm not as kind as you think I am.

I came from a thousand miles away just for you.

But I never expected that you would still lie to me even now.

Even if you die, I still want you to remember

all the people suffer the calamity because of you.

Your guilt will never be redeemed through the centuries.

Lu Buwei, you are the most cold-hearted person I've met.

You can't stay here. Let's go.

General! General, it's terrible.

More and more soldiers are sick.

Send my order. We withdraw immediately. Leave the sic ones here.

Seal the entire city and implement curfew.

-What about Minister Lu... - There are only sick people here.

There is no Prime Minister.

- There is plague ahead. Anyone who enters will be executed. - Please let me in there.

Stay back.

Do not enter.

Go back.

I beg you, please let me in.

Go back!

Go back! Go back!

Please let us in.

The city is sealed. What about the physicians?

There's no more. They've all been withdrawn.

There are only soldiers guarding the outside. - What about Prime Minister Lu?

Minister Lu is infected by the plague. There isn't any physician inside the city.

So now, he is probably dead already.

Let us in. Let us in, please.

Get back! Get back!

We want to go in!

Xiaochun, go find Bai Zhong. Ask him what he is doing.

I will go to the Governor's Manor. We'll meet inside.

On our way here, the last ingredient, Hippo Horn, has been sold out.

We can't save anyone.

It's too dangerous for you to enter the city now.

There are no more soldiers inside the city.

There may be a rebellion soon. I have to go in now.

Don't argue anymore. Hurry and find Bai Zhong.

Tell him, I don't care what personal grievance he has with Lu Buwei.

If he hurts innocent people, he will be punished for killing without cause.

Also, you must find Bai Ling'er and get the medicine back.

Open the door. Let us in!

Let us in!

My whole family is inside.

The Queen has arrived.

Take me to see the general. I know how to fight the plague.

Yes.

General.

Xiaochun, why are you here?

Where is Bai Ling'er? She stole the anti-plague medicine that I made.

That's an effective cure against the plague.

Tell her not to be ridiculous and give back the medicine.

Ling'er is sick, she is resting inside the camp now.

As for the medicine... it's been destroyed.

Then order men to gather the ingredients that I need.

Physician Yin, the city is sealed.

Then open the city gate. As long as there is a way to fight the plague,

everyone can be saved. Is there still a need to seal the city?

Have you tested the anti-plague medicine?

If you haven't cured anyone, how do you know it'll work?

Xiaochun, I can't let you take the risk.

What about all the innocent people in the city?

Many of them are not sick.

You want them to die too?

The overall situation is dire.

Alright, I'll solve the problem on my own.

Xiaochun, don't be so stubborn.

What if you get infected too? You know I'm trying to protect you in everything I do.

Haolan is inside the city. I have to save the people.

The Queen?

Men! Take Physician Yin inside the camp and guard her well.

Yes.

Bai Zhong, what are you doing?

Take her away.

Bai Zhong!

Release me! Release me!

General, if the Queen is really in the city,

should we order men to bring her out?

We can't be blamed when she seeks death herself. Don't worry about her.

Send this back to His Majesty. I'm requesting more troops.

More troops?

Yes.

The anti-plague medicine? Give it back to me!

Sorry, I destroyed it.

It's really destroyed?

Why have you been pretending to be sick?

I couldn't face Lu Buwei, nor my Elder Brother.

Bai Ling'er, do you know how much work it took me?

The anti-plague medicine is for saving lives.

Many people's lives!

You don't know how much my heart hurts.

Hurt?

The entire Southern Province is counting on Minister Lu to save the people.

All you remember is your own feelings. You care about your own pain without love.

Yes, you're so amazing. So amazing that

I'm touched. I almost want to applaud.

But what about those lives?

So many people's lives!

Just because you lose temper, they will all die.

Lu Buwei indirectly killed my father. He deserves to die.

You keep saying Lu Buwei killed Lord Wu An.

But what about those soldiers that died at Changping?

All together 450,000!

Lord Wu An opened a road for the Qin army, and he buried those captured soldiers alive.

Over night, all the women in Handan lost their fathers,

husbands, and sons.

You seek revenge from Lu Buwei. Who can they go to for revenge?

Then why did you save me?

Why not just let me die then?

A physician has a duty. No matter how much I hate the Bai family,

I will not kill the innocents.

But you? Your hate sprang from love, and you're willing to destroy lives.

What wrong did those innocent people do?

Why should they die for your childish love?

Bai Ling'er! Those people are people of Qin. They are your countrymen.

If tens of thousands of people revenge against you,

your Bai family deserve to be slashed thousands of times.

Quit talking. Quit talking.

Come, slowly.

Save us please.

Save us please.

Save us! Save us!

Save us! Save us!

- Your Highness. - Where is Lu Buwei?

What is he doing with all the chaos in Southern Province now?

Prime Minister Lu has been trying despite being sick.

But once he was infected by the plague, he won't let me serve him.

There is no morale in the city.

Ignore him.

Gather all the people, Tell them,

everyone will move to the temporary hospital behind the governor's manor.

All the items they touched must be sanitized by flame. Boil the water before use.

Bury any corpse that you find.

Orphans can be fostered by relatives or neighbors. The government will provide food.

Provide food? That means we have to open the grain storage without the King's permission.

I gave you the order. Follow it.

You tell the people yourself,

as long as they get through this plague, next year's taxation will be completely waived.

Your Highness, this...

Once Bai Zhong left the city, sooner or later there'll be a rebellion.

We must pacify the people as soon as possible.

Why don't you hurry?

Yes.

Wait.

If the person inside is still alive. Tell him to bath and change, take his medicine.

I'll take you out.

- Why? - There are a dozen herbal medicine shops in the city. Most of them are vacant now.

The herbal ingredients are still there. Maybe you can make new medicine?

Please help the people.

Why are you still dazed? Hurry and leave!

Your Majesty, it's time to take the medicine.

Your Majesty, an urgent report from Southern Province.

The plague is spreading in Southern Province. A rebellion is starting. There are soldiers who have fallen sick too.

General Bai is asking for more troops immediately.

More troops?

Rebellion?

Your Majesty, plagues have been more dangerous even than wars since ancient times.

General Bai only has 2,000 men.

If he can hold the rebellion down, and some sick people escape. There will be calamity in the nation.

I am sorry that I discussed national policy out of worries. Please forgive me.

Issue my edict: Send 20,000 troops to General Bai.

Tell him he must suppress the rebellion. Also send 50 physicians from Xianyang to go with the troops.

Ask Physician Yin to go, too.

What's the matter?

Your Majesty, the Queen said she wanted to rest in Yong City,

but actually escorted Physician Yin to Southern Province.

- Queen Dowager? - Why is it you?

Then who did you think it was?

You can all leave.

Yes.

How will you answer for your child play

- if you are seen by others? - If the most disciplined Queen in Xianyang has

left for Southern Province to meet her lover,

my little child play is nothing by comparison.

She is not going to meet her lover.

I think she is going there to establish her acclaim.

Establish her acclaim?

It's easy to go to Southern Province, but it wont' be that easy to return.

This candy doesn't take good.

Don't say nonsense.

Shall we move on with our next step?

Fragrant rice, delicious, this is good.

There are many kinds of rice. Liang is the highest grade.

Yellow Liang is the top grade.

were invited from Zhao by the Prince.

Please forgive me, wife of Prince Zixi.

Your Highness.

The prescriptions from the physicians don't work at all n Prime Minister Lu.

What do we do?

Haolan!

Why do you look so disheveled?

The city gate is sealed, and I couldn't get in. So I crawled through a hole.

How is there a hole by the city gate?

You know it was the dog's hole. Why not keep a little respect for me?

We don't have much time.

Let's go. Come with me.

How long has he been ill?

Over half a month.

If we had delayed, it would have been hopeless.

Before you came, I already order people to search through the whole city.

All the herbal ingredients are ready, but we still don't have any hippo horn.

Perhaps someone peeked your recipe and knew what's necessary,

and deliberately prevents you from saving people.

- Master. - Shut up!

What else can we try?

I'll write a prescription.

If Mahuang is not used carefully, he could die.

Is it worth a try?

Your Highness, don't do it.

How can you use the Prime Minister as a test?

It usually takes three to five days to test a medicine.

How can he last that long?

Haolan.

As the Great Qin's Prime Minister and entrusted with a serious mission,

he must save the people first.

How can he let other people test the medicine?

Why do I feel that you are not here to save me,

but rather to revenge upon me?

Lu Buwei, you fight hard every day,

can defeat anything,

this time, just gamble once with Heaven.

Do you dare?

Is Your Highness here to enjoy a vacation at Southern Province?

Thousands of civilians are waiting for your help. Why do you hurry and go?

Haolan.

Hurry and help them.

Take it twice a day according to the schedule.

Remember.

Take it.

Come, slowly.

How long has the Queen been here?

The Queen has been hear half a month. She is always passing out medicine with Physician Yin.

No one knows her real status. They think she is just a physician.

Prime Minister, you've just recovered, it's best to go back and rest early.

No, it's still full of trouble in the city.

Order the governor to come quickly. I have to talk to him.

Yes.

Lu Buwei.

Seeing me recovered well, are you disappointed?

I was in bed for half a month.

Other than the day you gave me medicine, you haven't returned here again.

You don't even seem to be an old lover.

Don't mention... You must not mentioned that title.

They sound hurtful and sarcastic.

We can be considered comrades.

It's fair to describe us as sworn friends.

Is this how you treat an old friend?

Is my visit enough for you to conquer the plague?

You needed the medicine to do its work.

Your gamble with Heaven

is not reliable. Of course I can't waste time in saving people.

What are you doing? Put me down!

You came her voluntarily. Don't think that I'll let you go.

We have to elope of course.

What are you doing? Let me go!

Lu Buwei, what are you doing?

What are you doing?

Let go! Let go!

Escort the Queen back to Xianyang.

If anything happens to her, you'll pay with your life.

Disappointed? What a shame.

Eloping with the Qin's Queen

really sounds exciting.

But whoever I want, I want to win her squarely and fairly.

I won't steal or cheat.

Now that you are Qin's Prime Minister,

why would you easily give it up?

Lu Buwei, you are still the same.

It makes you despicable. If you want me to go back,

why couldn't you tell me nicely?

Would you listen if I told you nicely?

Just leave the Southern Province's plague to me.

When you go back, there will definitely be trouble in the palace.

Can you handle it by yourself?

Even if I can't, I still don't need your help.

Take care.

Li Haolan!

Bastard!

Haolan! Haolan!

You forced her to go back, but I'm not even in the carriage.

Physician Yin, the plague isn't eradicated yet.

You and I will have to finish the job.

Your kind of man,

it requires the worse kind of luck to meet you.

You must be a born enemy.

Queen.

Where did the Queen went?

Dowager, the Queen went to recuperate in Yong City, she left in a hurry and didn't have time to let you know.

Even at this time, you still try to help her. Let her speak on her own.

There was an epidemic in Nanjung, I brought the physician over Nanjung.

The medicines were dispatched to Nanjung in several deliveries, once they arrived there.

I discovered that Prime Minister Lu contracted the illness. Therefore I took over his duties.

Console the citizens and subsided the unrest.

Before I left, lists of medicines used, names of orphans houses,

Plus the amounts of relief distributed, all had been recorded here.

Nonsense. The King already send troops to handle the unrest in Nanjung.

Everything you said on here are lies.

If the people at Nanjung did received treatment.

Lives were returned to normalcy. Then why would there be unrest?

Actually it is Bai Zhong as the chief General, deceived the public and neglected his duties to the public.

He is the chief offender. How can the King trust him?

Queen, Dowager was already very angry regarding your leaving the palace.

Don't argue back anymore, you should ask for forgiveness right away.

I am speaking with the Dowager. Is it your place to speak?

Dowager, if you don't believe me.

You will see right away if you send soldiers there to check.

Why do I need to make up lies that would be so easily exposed?

Leaving those aside,

let me just ask you this: You disobeyed the palace rule and secretly left.

Do you admit it or not?

Since Your Highness has already decided to punish me,

why bother with unnecessary arguments?

Queen, who has allowed you to lose your manners in front of the Queen Dowager?

Zichu, did you hear all of that?

Are you going to allow her to disrespect your mother like this?

Immediately admit your wrongdoing to the Dowager.

You still want to give her another chance?

For such a woman who behaves arrogantly and commits transgressions.

You've protected her and indulge her at every turn.

Are you still my son?

I am commanding you to immediately admit your wrongdoing.

Dowager, the Great Qin is our home.

The two of you, one is the Qin Dowager,

The other is the Qin King.

Watching the people suffering and the city getting destroyed.

The two of you are not anxious. Why should I be anxious then?

Who allowed you to go to Nanjung?

You clearly made a mistake and yet you are still speaking with such certainty.

Queen, you've really disappointed me.

Zichu, I will tell you now.

I went to Nanjung to save people and mitigate the epidemic. Do you believe me?

I don't care what others say about me.

I'll only ask you. Do you believe me?

Zichu.

This kind of Queen needs to be abolished.

I am giving you the last chance. Admit your wrongdoing.

What If I say no?

Then everything I gave you.

Can be take back at any time.

You can still laugh?

Zichu, I once promised you.

I will do my duties well as the Queen.

I love the people of Qin as my native country.

I did everything I am suppose to do.

If you want me to bow dow

Admit wrongdoing for matters I didn't do. I can not do so.

This official seal of Qin Queen.

I will return to you today. From this day forward.

I will have nothing to do with your Great Qin and your royal clan.

You...how dare you.

Dowager, please calm your anger.

My adoration for you, the position of Qin Queen.

In your eyes, are they all disposable objects?

Adoration, position might be important.

But if the price is my happiness and my dignity.

-Then it is not worth mentioning. - Then what about your son?

If you no longer the Qin Queen, can he still be Crown Prince?

Can you not consider for your own son?

Why must you be this willful?

Squander my affection away like this.

- Zichu. - Your majesty.

Zichu.

Your highness, I beg you not to speak anymore.

If Zheng'er really has ability, your majesty will not easily abolish him.

In addition, Zheng'er is already grown up.

If he wants anything, he needs to reach for him with his own hands.

If he needs this mother to compromise for him,

Then he is not qualify to be the Crown Prince of Qin.

Your highness, how can you be this cold hearted?

Your majesty loves you so much, how can you hurt his feelings like this?

Zichu, I haven't seen you for a while.

Your taste became so cheap and low.

All right, I am tired from my long travel.

If your majesty does not plan to kill me, please leave soon.

You are trying to force me to abolish your position.

So that you may be free? It's not so easy.

As long as I live for a day, you will be the Qin Queen.

Except that this Yongmen Palace.

Don't think that you can step out here even for half of a step.

All women treat their husbands as their Heaven.

They can't wait to pay him respect and give affection.

You actually ask to be removed from your position.

You are the most unruly woman that I've met.

Siluo, help me return to my palace.

Yes.

- Your Highness. - Do not look so weak.

Your Highness, why do you have to be this way?

In the past, he loved me and treasured me.

It was worth it for me to tolerate and endure.

But now, when I am aggrieved, he actually helped others to conduct an inquisition on me.

Why would I want to keep him?

Go. Go prepare food. I'm hungry.

How is he?

Your Highness, the King's illness erupted suddenly. I really don't know what to do.

I can try my best.

- Leave. - Yes.

Queen Dowager, don't worry so. The King is blessed by Heaven, he'll be fine.

He loves her so,

but she treats him worse than anyone else.

She has feared nothing because he pampered her.

When I see you in such pain,

I feel terrible. Do you know?

Queen Dowager.

Queen Dowager, even though the King is important, but you should take care of your body too.

If the King knows how worried you are, he would be upset.

There is a saying: An illness comes fast like a mountain's crash, but recovery is slow like threading silk.

I will definitely take good care of the King until he fully recovers.

Siluo, I am entrusting you with my son.

You must take good care of him.

Don't worry, I will be totally devoted to taking care of him.
