The Legend of Haolan

Episode 53

I have already decided. We will do as Prime Minister has recommended.

We will implement the policy of righteous soldiers..

The army is forbidden to massacre everyone in the captured city, or kill those who surrendered.

The will be reward for the people who surrender to us.

Your Majesty!

Send my decree out. Whosoever will lead a family to obey the commands of my army, will be given the reward for the family.

Whosever will lead 5 families to obey the commands of my army, will be given the reward for the 5 families.

Whosoever will lead 12,500 families to obey the commands of my army, will be given the reward for these number of families.

Whosoever will lead 32 families to obey the commands of my army, will be given the reward for these number of families.

Whosoever will lead 10,000 families to obey the commands of my army, will be given the reward for these numbers of families.

For those who disobey and acts against Heaven, and go against of will of Qin State, his entire family will be put to death.

All of you please remember well. The day will come

when my Great Qin will rule over these six countries, and become the ruler under Heaven.

These countries which are your enemies now will one day become the annexed territories of the Great Qin.

The enemies in front of you will become the people of Great Qin in the future.

His Majesty is wise.

Court dismissed.

Grand Tutor?

That's right.

Please teach Zheng'er. Be his Grand Tutor.

Greetings, Your Highness.

General Bai, where are you going?

Escort Xiaochun back to the manor.

Xiaochun? Wasn't it agreed that

she would stay in the palace for two days?

I want her to go back to the manor today.

General, Xiao Chun is someone who insists on being herself.

You should give her more respect.

You can't do whatever you want. You should seek her views.

All the women under Heaven are not opinionated like Your Highness.

I am also not like His Majesty, who is easily manipulated by woman.

How presumptuous!

General, everyone says that Xiao Chun and you have affinity and empathy each other,

but do you really understand this woman?

She has never gone against my decisions.

Haolan, I found many precious herbs in the physician's clinic.

Let's go.

Your Highness, General Bai is too tyrannical.

It's good if Physician Yin would just like anyone.

She insists on being with him. It's so infuriating.

Why are you still laughing? He is so arrogant. Why aren't you angry?

Does this man really understand the woman next to him?

How dare he spout so much nonsense? Who gave him the courage to do so?

Let's go and deliver the cakes to Zheng'er.

The principle of one punishment means punishment without deference to classes.

From ministers, generals, to commoner, physician,

anyone who disobeys the King's edicts, violates what's forbidden by law,

will be punished by death without mercy.

Enough, I have been listening for the whole day.

You said that your eyes hurt. I read to you and you are still tired?

Grand Tutor, my ears have heard repeatedly the same old stuff and are growing scabs.

Isn't this from The Book of Shang? I remember it all.

If you remember then you should know clearly defined award and punishment by the law.

Three days ago, why did you punish a eunuch without reason?

Did I?

I remember now.

Why did you punish him?

Because...he was too ugly.

Crown Prince, Grand Tutor.

Crown Prince, Her Highness ordered me to deliver some cakes to you.

Where's Mother? Didn't she say she would personally accompany me?

Her Highness has some other matters. Take a look at these cakes first.

She personally made them.

I'm the Crown Prince, not a kid.

Why is Mother still sending these cakes?

So disrespectful.

Crown Prince, please enjoy. I'm taking my leave.

Crown Prince, I remember that I have some tasks to do.

Today's lesson will end here.

I'm taking my leave first.

Has the lesson ended?

Your Majesty, it has ended.

Let's go back to the palace first.

I will visit Zheng'er later.

Your Highness, why are you avoiding me?

Go outside and keep watch.

Minister Lu, since when you can order my servant?

Your Highness, if you don't mind letting others hear what I want to say to you,

she can remain here too.

You can leave first.

Yes. I will keep watch out there.

My Lady, I have tried so long, please just go back.

It's not worth it if you anger the King.

In my opinion, because of Prince Chengjiao,

the King has been generous with you and your son.

He even scolded those physicians that didn't treat the prince immediately.

It won't happen again. You two don't treasure what you have now,

what else do you clamor for?

To come see His Highness is considered clamoring?

Please don't.

Her Highness doesn't like it.

It's not just you. Even the relatives that brought in beauties

were kicked out of the palace.

Why do you continue the worthless pursuit?

I guarantee that Her Highness will definitely like this.

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Why are you here?

Your Majesty, take a look.

The Song of Lonely Orchid?

This is the missing tune that the Queen has been searching for a long time.

You came especially to give this tune to the Queen?

I have taken to heart the scolding from Your Majesty last time.

Her Highness is the Mistress of Great Qin.

I will be very respectful from now on

to never cause the Queen to be upset.

Why didn't you give this directly to Her Highness?

We are already distanced, now I don't dare to get close.

Hence, I could only go through you to present this to Her Highness.

The first part of the tune was found in Chu state.

I filled in the second part myself.

I would like to personally explain to the Queen,

but I'm afraid that she won't like it.

Where's the Empress now?

Before I came here, she has already returned to Yongmen Palace.

I heard that she went to visit the Crown Princess and has not returned.

Come with me.

Yes.

Minister Lu, what is it that you must see me alone?

It's still the same old thing. Why do you keep avoiding me?

I didn't.

You are still denying?

Whether it's the imperial court or harem,

as long as I'm there, you would avoid me.

Just a month ago, we built an orphanage in Xianyang

to house the abandoned and orphaned children from war.

You distinctly mentioned this

but when I went there, I didn't see anyone.

Does the Empress needs to be personally on-site for all matters?

Why would I need the court officials then?

When you knew that I would go, you choose to leave first.

Also, today, you distinctly knew that I was in the Hall.

Why did you avoid seeing me?

Say something.

Are you always adept in conversation?

Why are you mute now?

That's right, I just don't want to see you.

Can I not?

Haolan, how have I displeased you?

You wanted me to become an obedient official, and

watch you and him happy and harmonious as a couple.

Haven't I done that already?

What else do you want me to do?

Do you want me to kneel and beg for your mercy?

I sometimes want to open your heart and take a close look.

Why are you so cruel to me all the time?

Why are you laughing?

I don't want to see you because

I don't want to uncover your falsehood.

Understand?

What falsehood do I have?

Please tell me

When there were rumors in Xianyang about the Crown Prince not being the King's son,

who was the instigator behind the scenes?

Prince Zixi and Lord Yangquan spread rumors in Xianyang

to harm the King of Qin.

With your capabilities, you actually let the rumors spread far and wide.

They couldn't be stopped. There was only one goal.

It was to entice Prince Zixi to enter step by step into your trap,

in order to crush his power completely.

Isn't it good to just let his trickery follow its course?

Not to mention your enemies,

even the King of Qin, court official or generals, regular people,

and even me and my son,

we are all pawns on your chessboard.

You place the pawns where they need to be.

To achieve your plan, you can sacrifice anyone and everyone.

Lu Buwei, your scheme is truly scary.

Why would I hurt you?

Everything I do is to eliminate secret oppositions in order to protect you and the Crown Prince.

But you've never asked us if that's what we'd want.

You acted on your own to spread your net,

gradually and surely to capture your enemies.

As for Zheng'er, he is the lure on your net.

Lu Buwei,

you have smeared my son's birthright.

You and I can never predict

whether someone will denigrate and humiliate him in the future.

Under such circumstances,

you actually dare to come questioning me.

I will clearly tell you now,

I don't want to ever see you again.

You knew that I did it to remove Prince Zixi.

Why are you blaming me?

Don't I deserve a sense of justice from you?

Release me, release me.

Why release you? You belong to me from the start.

Haolan, I am here...

Your Highness, you...

Why are you screaming for nothing?

The Queen slipped and I helped her stay up.

Your Highness, I will take my leave.

Are you satisfied now?

Your Majesty, who are you waiting for?

What are you doing here?

When you witnessed a secret encounter between the Queen and Minister Lu,

did you feel anger or sadness?

Only you can think of such a worthless topic.

That tune book was also given by you to Siluo.

Your Majesty thinks it's worthless, I think it's disappointing.

If it weren't for an accident years ago,

Lu Buwei returned to Handan,

today's Quen would have become the wife of Minister Lu.

Lu Buwei is your lifelong friend and has saved you.

But you robbed him of his love.

Why did you suppress your anger and didn't blow up today?

It's because you feel a deep remorse.

I've already forgotten what happened in the past.

If the Queen really wanted to secretly meet Minister Lu, why bother meeting at the Crown Prince's palace?

It was an accidental encounter.

Your Majesty, you are truly big-hearted.

You can actually allow the Queen to harbor love for someone else.

Who has allowed you to denigrate the Queen?

Do not forget who you are.

Then can you honestly say that she loves you?

All these years,

she has given you all the warmth and affection,

and making you feel happy.

She looks like a perfect wife.

But she is only performing her duty.

What a shame. The woman that you tried so hard to get

has never for even a single day

truly loved you.

Are you afraid that I'll kill you?

I have seen through your secret.

That's why you're upset.

Zichu, in my memory,

this is the first time I see you lose self control.

The Queen and Minister Lu dare to meet.

The King should have been angered right then.

But he actually let it go easily.

What's the hurry?

The one who should worry now is the Queen of Qin right now.

What a shame. The woman you worked so hard to get

has never for even a single day truly loved you.

Zichu.

Lu Buwei and I accidentally met today.

But you happened to see it.

It was planned by someone deliberately.

Hupuo was even hit unconscious by someone.

She was abandoned among the flower bushes in the garden, and remains unconscious.

This is a frequent scheme that is common in the palace.

I know.

Then why are you still upset with me?

You wouldn't even see me.

I've been busy at work. I am tired.

It's not because I want to avoid you.

We have been husband and wife for so many years,

please believe that I am faithful to you.

I still have a mound of work to take care.

I will visit you another day. Go back.

You say you believe me,

but look so dark and foreboding,

what do you really want to do?

You know that I never have anything to do with Lu Buwei.

Today was especially an entrapment.

What are you so upset about?

What I'm upset about?

My Queen and her old lover are murmuring endearments to each other.

You tell me what I am angry about?

Old lover?

Yes, Lu Buwei and I are old lovers.

What does it matter?

Li Haolan.

Since that is a fact, why am I afraid of admitting it?

Lu Buwei and I did liked each other.

I even planned to marry him.

Spend my whole life with him.

But that is already in the past.

Who doesn't have a past?

If your majesty can not let it go, why did you marry me then ?

Since you married me, you need to be able to accept my past.

That was from so many years ago. You still want to blame me for old events?

Too late, I don't want to hear it anymore.

You don't want to hear anymore?

What gives you the right not to listen?

I gave birth to Zheng'er in the middle of a battle.

I raised him all by myself.

Since coming to Qin State.

i did all I can to be a good Queen for you.

What did I do wrong?

That you have so much suspicion.

Haolan, did I not treat you well enough?

Former King adored Huayang so much.

Yet still did not dispersed the all the concubines for her.

For me? Was it really for me?

If it's not for you, why did I do that?

You lived as a hostage for over ten years.

Even on top of the bed, you can not let your guard down.

The beautiful women that your political opponents send to you.

Would you really be comfortable to have them sleep next to you?

You used your love for me to rid of all the concubines from the inner palace.

The public then all praised your deep devotion to your first wife.

A King with such high moral conduct. It is so touching.

If you were really wholeheartedly devoted to me, where did Chengjiao came from then?

That is the biggest irony.

Haolan, today you finally speak your inner thought.

So that is how you look at my devotion for you?

Then it is also because your majesty became of suspicious of me first.

Do you dare to say that you didn't hide his shadow inside your heart?

I did not !

Do you think I will believe that?

Zichu.

You know clearly that this is only a crude instigation.

Yet you are still suspicious of me.

You accused me of still harboring old feelings.

Yes.

I do think of Lu Buwei.

I've always think of him.

Are you happy now? satisfied?

Too audacious. Who allowed you to speak this way?

I've spoiled you.

Look at yourself. So arrogant and wilful.

Do you act like my Queen?

There is no need from now onward.

You can abolish my position as the Queen.

You can appoint anyone else you like. I will make the space out for you.

Your Highness, it's all my fault for being careless.

- If I had... - Such a small trick

only works when one is not careful. It's not your fault.

Forget it.

How about letting me go explain it to the King?

What is there to explain?

It's all because he is narrow-minded and suspicious over nothing.

Let him be.

Your Highness, the King has suddenly fallen ill. The physicians have been notified.

He gets what he deserves.

Your Highness.

Don't cry anymore.

Why are you here?

Your illness was caused by me.

If I had been careful, I would not have been used.

I didn't dare tell the truth. The tune book was given by the wife of Prince Zixi.

I thought she meant well, but I didn't know she had an ulterior motive.

When I saw the Queen and Minister Lu at the Song State Palace, I realized everything.

It was all a plot made by the wife of Prince Zixi

to smear the Queen's reputation.

Your Majesty is wise, please don't believe it.

I know, you can go.

If you are hurt in anyway, I cannot redeem my guilt even by death.

Your Majesty, please allow me

to stay here to serve you, or I would not be free of worries.

Alright, don't cry anymore.

Don't cry anymore. If you keep crying, your eyes will be swollen.

Your Majesty, please forgive me and let me stay.

You really want to stay?

Will you kindly allow it, Your Majesty?

Your Majesty, you have never been so nice to me before.

At this moment, even if you order me to die,

I will die without regret.

You silly.

Why is the Queen here?

Greetings to Your Highness.

Your Highness, I have already served the King to help him sleep.

If you want anything, you can come back tomorrow.

Men.

Your Highness, what are you doing?

Take her down, cane 30 times.

Let me go, let me go!

Let me go, let me go!

Your Highness, it's the Heroic Six Palace here.

His Majesty has just gone to sleep. Are you crazy?

Your Highness, please don't do it. If His Majesty is disturbed,

I would not be excused from any blame.

I didn't do anything wrong. What right do you have?

I want to punish you. Do I need any reason?

Start!

Your Highness, this won't do. It really won't do.

You've always been kind and tolerant. When you cane a royal concubine without reason,

this won't look good.

No reason? If this woman didn't deliberately spread rumors and divide us,

why would there be so much trouble?

Let's go. I need to go back and rest.

Thirty canes. Any less,

you bear it for her.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

What a special night, to see such a beauty?

What a special person, and such a beauty!

He has returned.

Wife of Prince Zixi.

Get out!

Wife of Prince Zixi, did you have a nightmare?

Wife of Prince Zixi, someone just came to report

that the Queen suddenly erupted in anger and order Lady Mi to be caned 30 times.

Lady Mi passed out, and the King is angry.

Ling'er, quit playing.

Let's eat.

Come back, come back, come back.

I made this fish soup, even picked the bones clean.

I guarantee you won't choke like last time.

Smell it. It's fragrant.

If you won't eat, I won't play with you anymore.

Ling'er, eat first.

Don't scare her.

Why hasn't she improved at all?

It's been three years, she is still like a dummy.

Bai Zhong!

Ling'er, Ling'er, Ling'er.

Open your eyes and look at me.

Who am I? Who am I?

Do you know how hurt I am whenever I see you like this?

Stop it, Bai Zhong!

You can't treat a patient like this. She is still recuperating.

It's alright now. Don't be scared.

Your brother is just worried. It's alright now.

That's enough.

You know it's pointless to get upset. Why do you have to hurt yourself?

Does Ling'er have to stay mindless for the rest of her life?

She used to be so smart, so vibrant!

Who is the person in that room? I have no idea!

Bai Zong, believe in your sister.

Please give her more time.

I will stay with you and help you endure this most difficult time.

How did the most valiant great general lose temper so easily?

I thought you were the world's strongest man who can bear pains.

No.

I can't bear it anymore.

How my sister became this way

is because of one ultimate culprit.

Even if I have to use any means,

I will make him pay.

Your Majesty, the Southern Province has a revolt, just let the Governor handle it.

Why do you have to personally go?

No more talk. Just go prepare.

Should I report to the Queen?

I understand.

Prime Minister, you cannot go it. Prime Minister!

Your Majesty, please forgive me.

Your Majesty.

Even armed guards can't stop you.

- You are quite mighty. - I would like to report something.

Southern Province has a rebellion. I am leaving right now.

We will take about it when I return.

Your Majesty, you must not go there.

It isn't a rebellion in Southern Province. It's the plague.

What?

The plague erupted about a month ago.

The plague has spread all over the city.

Among every ten people, six or seven have died.

To prevent panic among the populace, I reported it as a rebellion.

If it's really a plague and I don't go,

who else would go?

Your Majesty shouldn't risk yourself.

Since I am Qin's Prime Minister,

I should be the one to visit Southern Province for you,

to inspect the plague's progress and find a solution.

You're not afraid of the danger?

Your Majesty doesn't fear the danger, why would I be afraid?

Prime Minister Lu is truly a pillar of our nation.

It's only revealed in times of crisis.

However, with so many plague victims, people must be panicking.

A rebellion can easily occur.

I will order General Bai Zhong and his army to assist,

to avoid drastic changes in Southern Province.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

- Plague. - Prime Minister Lu has already left.

Your Highness, they say over half of the population has died of the plague in Southern Province.

Many people have escaped from the area.

Will they spread the plague to Xianyang?

It will be horrible if it spreads to Xianyang.

Did His Majesty order the army to go with?

Yes, he ordered General Bai to command 2,000 men.

When the army arrives there, they will seal the city.

The people inside will probably never make it out again.

Hupuo, send a message to Xiaochun.

Yes.

Wife of Prince Zixi, what is the matter?

Wife of Prince Zixi.

- Lady Mi. - What's happened? What are you looking for?

It's nothing. I had a dream.

Why are you here?

There is a plague in Southern Province. Prime Minister Lu has left Xianyang.

I see.

Everything is going along just like you planned. Why don't you show any gladness?

I already said I know. You can go back now.

Wife of Prince Zixi, I am not your servant

to be ordered as you wish.

Didn't you just get caned and have been staying in bed?

If anyone discovers that you are walking around,

your pretense in weakness will have to stop.

Since you are not in a good mood today,

I will come visit another day.

Go prepare. I need to leave the palace.

Yes.

Leave safely.

Bai Zhong!

Why are you here?

Who was that woman?

Xiaochun, when did you start inquiring about my guest?

Who cares if you don't want to say!

It was just an informant. No need to worry.

Really?

Alright, I won't tease you anymore. Let's talk about something serious.

I have to travel far. I entrust Ling'er in your care.

Where are you going to?

Some trouble in Southern Province. The King has order me to take 2,000 men there.

The plague has spread. It's dangerous. I'll go with you.

Don't worry. The best physicians have been gathered in Southern Province.

I want you to help me take care of Ling'er at home.

- But... - Just stay.

Wait for me to return.

Plague victims in Southern Province start with mouth sores, pain in swallowing, then vomit and diarrhea.

Followed by intermittent chills and fevers, and unconsciousness.

Physician Yin, it's mealtime.

It's done.

Someone, come quickly!

What's done? What is it?

It's a pill to cure the plague, of course.

Hurry and deliver them to Southern Province.

Remember, you must hand them to Lu Buwei yourself.

Yes.

Your Majesty, it's all my fault.

I offended the Queen,

that's why she became angry. I know I did wrong.

I already know what happened that day.

You didn't offend her, but she punished you without reason. It's not your fault.

Your majesty, do you really not blame me?

How is your wound?

Those are only minor wounds.

But you are in a low mood because of the plague in Southern Province.

I recently created a new dance.

Can I ask people to dance for you? To relieve your stress?

All right.

Open the door!

Who told you to lock us in?

Someone, open the door!

Who locked the door?

Open the door.

Lao Ai? Why are you here?

The Queen wants to know when will the anti-plague medicine be sent to Southern Province?

Did I already told you to deliver it? Where is the medicine?

It's Eldest Miss. She grabbed the medicine from me.

Impossible, that's not possible.

She is still sick, why would she grab the medicine?

It's true. If it wasn't for Eldest Miss's order,

why would we dare to lock you up.

Oh no!

Let's go to the palace first.
