The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 49

Prime Minister Lu, this urn was found in your basement.

What, you still want to shirk it off to others?

Situ Que had been with me for many years. Its normal for him to have ulterior motive.

Burying the urn is not an issue.

I really regret such disloyal and unjust person.

Should've been killed to avoid future problems.

There are no benefits for speaking too much. Prime Minister Lu, please go this way.

Wait, where are you taken him?

Stealing from oneself, that's cause for extra punishment.

It's up the King what is punishment will actually be.

No, you can't take him away.

Go back to Bai Residence, Bai Zhong will protect you.

No, I won't go.

I am your wife, I won't go anywhere else.

You..

Ling'er, hurry back to Bai residence so that you wouldn't get implicated as well.

You are a shameless vile person.

Mr. Situ, you've earn a great merit today.

Say it, how would you like me to reward you?

I will request for a reward when Prince reach success later.

That is well too. Let's go.

Prince.

I have an important witness here.

Witness?

I don't know. I don't know anything.

Take her.

I really regret not allowing Lu Buwei to kill you in the past.

Regret? Too late.

You.

Qiao'er, let's hurry to get Elder brother.

Bai Residence.

Young mistress, you've been crying for over half hours here already.

My husband will be penalize soon, how can I not cry?

Ling'er, do you still remember what father said?

Only weak people cries.

According to Qin Law, I won't be able to escape either.

I already though of a way out for you.

As long as you are the one who expose Lu Buwei in accordance to Qin Law,

You can also keep your dowry. How is this method?

Elder brother, how can you do that?

Husband and wife are birds of same forest, when trouble comes each fly on its own.

Once that Lu Buwei dies, I will find another husband for you.

I don't want to.

If you allow him to die, then I shall accompany him too.

Ling'er, don't be wilful.

Elder brother, I beg you.

Please help him. Save Lu Buwei.

It's not that I don't want to save him.

Its that I really can not help him.

Ling'er, do you know how many people want him dead?

Lu Buwei is originally from a merchant background.

Now he became a Qin prime minister.

So many people wants to find his weakness every day.

Now they have to beat down further on the person who is already fallen.

Ling'er, not only I can't save him.

Even the Qin King can not keep him alive.

At the worst, he can leave the Prime Minister position, we will return to Wei State.

Remember what happened to Shan Yiang? (Famous Prime Minister who was killed by Qin's King.)

He knows the principle of retiring at one's height.

Those people are here to take his life.

Can not escape and can not be evaded.

Bai Zhong.

Why are you here? Weren't you treating soldiers?

You knew the event will become like this?

Even without Situ Que selling out Lu Buwei. This still will happen.

Prince Xi found gold water from Lu Buwei's basement.

That is enough to prove that Lu Buwei stole from the storehouse.

Lu Buwei jailed, Crown Prince's bloodline in question. Qin King getting criticized.

Will you still be able to be lead General for the attack on Chou?

All right, if you won't go, I will go.

Elder brother.

Your majesty.

What is happening outside?

Lord Xun is leading a group of official and royal members outside

demanding to see you.

Royal clan made three requests.

One is Prince Xi will replace Prime Minister Lu and lead the army to attack East Chou.

The King agreed to this one.

Second is to punish Prime Minister Lu for the storehouse theft.

Third is to open imperial court discussion on...

How?

What can't you say at this point?

Say it.

They want the King to abolish Crown Prince's title.

Also me, the Queen.

Hoalan, what should we do now?

Xiaochun, there is one matter, I need your help in.

Prince.

Where is Prince consort?

At...at the sleeping quarter.

Did she have her meal?

She just had it.

What is the item in your hand? Give me.

I did wrong. I deserve to die.

But I was obeying Prince Consort's orders.

What is it?

Go with me.

That's a joke.

Who will bring their pregnant wife to go into battle?

The road is long and the travel is tough.

Aren't you concerned there could be an accident?

Don't pretend anymore.

You have no intention to give birth to a son for me!

I don't know what you are talking about.

For termination purposes, two units of Chinese aconite

for use with bittersweet wine for application to the right foot.

It's a very good method for termination.

Fang Ya, you are trying to abort our child while he's alive!

It's good that you know anyway.

I didn't plan on hiding it from you for too long.

Why?

Is your heart made of ice?

The child is so big already.

Even if you don't care about his life,

don't you even care about your own life?

I tried various ways to get married into the Qin State.

I would never be satisfied with just becoming Princess Consort.

I want the power to control Qin State.

You deserve to die.

Say it, what did you do?

You try it.

Come on.

Just fiercely pierce it in.

Then, you would be able to break free.

You take action first.

Say it, what did you do?

I send someone and came to an agreement with Zhao State Crown Prince.

When your amy enters battle.

The army that was originally suppose to aid East Chou.

Will turn around and help you kill the Lord of East Chou.

What about Zhao State?

Zhao State will get the entire Shangdang.

Because of those matters of the past,

you really hate Zichu deeply.

To the extent that you would carefully plan this scheme

that would even drag the Zhao State down as well.

I love him.

It's the first time I ever love someone this much in my life.

For him, I abandoned my parents, my family and my country.

I expended everything and also sacrificed everything!

But in the end, I didn't gain anything.

Such an experience was hard to bear.

Therefore, he must die by my hands.

And you... You are my sword.

I am your sword?

If you get as you wished.

Then we will agree.

What are you laughing at?

Thinking about it, this is actually the first time you speak your mind with me.

Then I will also share something.

Back when my father was a hostage to Zhao State.

No one else was willing to follow along.

Only my mother willingly went with him to Handan.

The two of them shared that time together.

Three years later they finally was able to return to Qin.

When mother thought her good time finally came.

But unexpectedly only two months after returning,

She was found out that there was a lover hidden inside the closet.

The funny part is...

Father King actually believed it.

So that he gave order to have other locked up inside a stone coffin.

She suffocated to death.

Before she left, she cried out to me.

Zichi,

Zichi, son.

Afterwards?

Later it was found that she was framed.

Then father had the coffin opened up.

He hold the body and cried.

I guessed he must've forgotten the initial promise he made.

She promised mother once.

The day he get on the throne.

Mother will be the Queen of Qin.

Therefore you will risk your life to take that back.

Don't misunderstand, I am not an idiot who is trying to avenge my mother.

It's been so long. I don't even remember

what my mother actually look like.

I want to be the King. Just that I want to be the Qin King.

Telling you this is because I want to ask you to do something.

This is the something left by mother.

I can't take it with me. You save this for me.

Regardless of what your motive is. What I promised you will not be renegaded.

I promise that I will definitely make the Queen of Qin.

Prince Consort, why didn't you tell Prince that you did not use the medicine at th end?

Get out of here.

-Get out. -Yes.

-Prince.

Scram.

Are you all right? Your old wounds didn't healed yet. I shouldn't done that to you.

My life is worthless.

As long as I have one last breathe left. I was even able to climb out from a heap of dead bodies.

But Prince is not the same. You will be leading the battle out tomorrow.

Prince, you shouldn't go anywhere else.

Prince is calm and extraordinary smart.

You treat Prince Consort as a beloved treasure.

Looks like you found out the truth today.

- That's why you got so angry. - She is such a scary woman.

For her own goal

She is willing to sell anything.

- Including herself. - But you love her too much.

I already understood one thing.

Love is uncontrollable.

Even though I know what kind of woman she is, yet I still love her.

Then do you plan on telling her?

Tell her?

Her tail will surely fly her into the sky then.

Her kind of woman, cruel, selfish, arrogant.

There's nothing adorable about her.

No men will ever like her.

Except for you.

Prince, when the big plan about to come to fruition. She shouldn't waste your time on a woman.

Please go back now.

Regardless what difficulties lay ahead. I will show you the way.

To personally see you get the Qin throne.

Thank you.

You should also be reassured that I will give all the fortune and glory.

Including the woman that you admire.

Let's go. Let's go back and get everything that belongs to me.

You are too audacious. You dared to instruct Lord Yangquan to act behind my back.

Dowager, instead of waiting for Lu Buwei to become more powerful, better to get rid of him sooner.

That is a mutually beneficial plan, why would the Dowager oppose it?

That sounds good.

By every means possible, you instigate the royal clan and took control of the military.

What are you trying to achieve?

Ten thousand Qin soldier. Naturally I am trying to attack East Chou.

You take me for three year old child, easily fooled by you ?

You are trying to betray the country.

Lady speaks too harshly.

Unusual times requires unusual measures.

Why take such a big risk? In the imperial court.

If Zichu refused to abolish Crown Prince.

Then he has only the choice of giving up his throne.

If Zichu really agrees to abolish the Queen and Crown Prince during the discussion.

Also don't you forget.

Lu Buwei is the Lord Wu'an's son in law.

Lord Wu'an is already dead.

Bai Qi is already dead but his mighty reputation remains.

There is the very crafty Bai Zhong.

Only til the end will we know by whose hands will the deer die in.

Why did Zichu agree so readily?

The six states are aligning, at this important juncture.

The new King needs to establish his reputation, he needs to go into battle in person.

But now Lu Buwei is in prison,

Crown Prince's bloodline is being suspected.

Zichu dare not leave Xianyang.

Plus the pressure the royal clan is putting on him.

How can he handle all this?

No, this plan is too dangerous.

Just a little mistake, we will be charged with betrayal of country.

Little sister, say something.

You go on. I will handle everything inside Xianyang.

Much thanks to the Dowager, i will take my leave.

You really trust him this much. Once has the military power, will he still listen to you ?

I am afraid that once he becomes the King.

He will become the second Zichu that is out of our control.

He doesn't dare. Whether that ten thousand soldiers are friend or enemy.

Just depend on one word from me.

But the imperial court discussion?

Once we have Crown Prince Zheng, then we can control the Queen.

Release me, men.

Go quietly with us back to the Gui YI Palace. I won't be polite if you don't behave.

I will tell my father King to kill you.

Crown Prince.

Everyone in the world knows you are the Lu Buwei's bastard. You really think you are the Crown Prince?

Dare to be audacious to me.

You dare to be rude to the Crown Prince.

There will be more once we get to the palace.

Let go!

What are you planning to do to my son?

Mother!

They are planning to kill me.

Your highness, how can you privately torture them?

The royal debate didn't start yet, you dare to follow the rumors.

Slandering Crown Prince.

To disobey your superior is akin to betrayal. Anyone can kill them.

In addition, I am only inviting these these two officials to enjoy some cool air.

To clear up their hot head.

I think you do not want to follow their example?

Court debate will begin soon. Please protect us and take us to the Qui Yi Palace now.

After the imperial debate, you come here to ask for Crown Prince's forgiveness.

Yes.

Go this way.

Zheng'er, do you dare to go to Gui Yi Palace by yourself?

Can mother go with me?

You are grown up now. You need to learn to face all of this.

Listen to Aunt Chun's instructions later.

Mother will await your safe return at Yongmen Palace.

Dowager, Prince found gold water at the Lu Residence.

This shows that Lu Buwei is the thief.

The King and I already know this matter.

Since we have the evidence , let's start on the next topic.

Recently, there is much rumor around Xianyang.

That Crown Prince is Lu's bastard.

Lu Buwei colluded with the current Queen to tainted the royal bloodline.

To seize the royal throne.

You are an important imperial official.

Yet you believe in this ridiculous claim.

Lord Yangquan, you've committed a breach of etiquette.

Without evidence, how dare you slander.

Lord Xun, your lecture is right.

I crossed the line.

But I am still the King's uncle.

I have the right to suspect about the Crown Prince's bloodline.

I have specially asked Lord Xun to come here today.

Ask him to represent the royal clan.

To personally witness Lu Buwei and that Zhao consort's scheme.

I also want to know how did I carry out this scheme.

Your Majesty, I have evidence

to prove that Crown Prince is of Ying QIng bloodline.

Greetings to Dowager and Your Majesty.

How bold!

A mere woman dares to come up to the imperial court.

Dowager and Marchioness Shuan are also women.

Why are they able to come and me as I witness can not come ?

You are a close friend of the Queen, how can your words be trustworthy?

Mere words are not trustworthy

But regardless of what your evidence is.

Now needs to stand aside.

Physician Ying, what are you planning to do?

A paternal blood test.

Everyone is suspicious of Crown Prince's bloodline, once we take this test.

The truth will be revealed once we check to see if the blood will mix.

Hoalan, to take the test in public.

You do not consider that as a shameful act?

He is willing to face the Dowager for me.

To resolve all the matters.

I am also willing to take a step back and sacrifice my dignity.

But this method may not work.

I believe that you will have a way to sincerely convince everyone.

Correct?

I am willing to take the test.

Please ask Prime Minister Lu... Wait.

Your Majesty.

Without the blood test, I already know that Zheng'er is of YIng Qing bloodline.

He is my biological son!

Your Majesty, I understand to take the test in public is very unbearable.

But if we don't do it, how can we be sure?

Why don't we take a look at Lord Yangquan's evidence?

Bring it up.

- Who are you? - I am a servant slave from General Bai's residence.

How are you related to this matter?

I heard with my own ears.

Ying Xiaochun once discussed this matter with my master.

She said that Her Highness and Prime Minister Lu had an affair.

I did not. This is slander.

Your Majesty, Your Highness, she made up this lie.

I can make a promise to the heavens.

I almost lost my life because of the knowledge about this matter.

That's why the mistress brought me into the Lu residence.

In that case, General Bai knew about this matter, too?

Master should have heard of this too.

What is the evidence?

Your servant slave has the evidence.

Your Majesty, Your Highness, please take a look.

This hairpin was a gift from Prime Minister Lu to Her Highness.

This handkerchief is ironclad evidence.

What a special night is it tonight?

That we could be rowing a boat in the middle of the river.

What a special day is it today?

When I could be on a boat together with my prince.

Dazed and dim-witted, I do not deserve your kindness;

Please do not be reviled by my shallowness;

I feel deeply anxious and troubled in my heart;

Since there’s very little I know about my prince;

There are trees in the mountain and branches on the trees;

In my heart, I like my lord but you do not know. [Ode of the Yue Boatman; a folk song of the Yue people]

It is only a love poem that everyone knows of.

How can this be evidence?

In Prime Minister Lu's room,

I found the love letter between him and Her Highness.

This handkerchief is clearly an old item.

Yet Prime Minister Lu couldn't bear to throw it away.

The first two phrases are delicate and elegant.

That should be written by Her Highness.

The final two sentences manifest a strong style.

There is an opening and a closing. That should be a man's style.

There are also some words on the back of the handkerchief.

On the first day of the first month of the lunar year,

son, Zheng, was born inside the city of Handan. I pine for my lord's return.

Therefore, this clearly shows that Her Highness gave birth to a son that year.

This is the letter sharing happy news with the biological father about the birth of his son.

As to whether this is real or fake,

just examine the writing and the signature to ascertain the truth or otherwise.

Lu Buwei comes from a merchant background, he is very ambitious.

Upon seeing Her Highness' beauty, he gifted her to His Majesty while she was pregnant.

Eight months later, she gave birth to Ying Zheng.

In this way, Lu Buwei could easily

steal the entire Qin State.

Audacious!

Haolan gave birth in August due to the Handan battle.

She was forced to give birth prematurely because she tried to save me.

Seeing your own wife having affinity with another man,

you even helped him to lie to everyone.

To be fooled as such, you are the first fool under the sky.

Are you qualified to be the king of Qin?

If I am not qualified,

should I abdicate it to Elder Brother?

Listen to this. This is the true reason why Lord Yangquan

faked the evidence to slander Her Highness and Crown Prince.

He wants to turn the royal court upside down and force me to abdicate the throne.

Lord Yangquan, this is not only slander

but also treason.

If Your Majesty would make a prompt decision and would depose Her Highness and Crown Prince,

then naturally you do not need to abdicate the throne.

What if I say no?

You all heard this.

Your Majesty is willing to give up his country

for a mere woman.

The Great Qin royal ancestors.

Listen to this unfilial son's words.

How can you rest in peace?

All the royal clansmen.

Can you still support this kind of King?

That's right. This is stealing a country.

Lu Buwei and Zhao Consort are the real thieves trying to take this country.

Zhao Consort is a femme fatale.

Lu Buwei is traitorous.

These two people deserved to chopped into thousand pieces.

Your Majesty, you shouldn't hesitate anymore.

Even if only a thread of uprightness left.

How can you bear this great shame?

Execute Lu Buwei. Execute Crown Prince.

The might Qin King.

How can you abandon the big picture for a mere woman?

The Great Qin will be destroyed by your hands.

How can the entire imperial court officials believe the word of a maid? That is ridiculous.

That's right, take her to the imperial prison for interrogation.

Then will find out whether she made false testimony.

Lord Xun, what is your opinion?

Zhao Consort and Lu Buwei engaged in conspiracy.

Should be executed.

Bai Zhong is accessory to the crime.

Your Majesty, you neglected to see the truth.

Should be more than neglect.

Didn't you forget?

The king used to be a hostage in Zhao.

He was in dire need of aid.

Without Lu Buwei, how can he return to Qin?

Lord Yangquan, what do you mean?

Why don't you think more carefully?

Since Zichu returned to Qin, the two former masters' passed on.

From what I can see, most likely there is something afoot.

Him, for the sake of the throne.

He is willing to be fooled.

Your Majesty, you have two options.

Abolish the Queen and Crown Prince.

Or abdicate the throne.

Lord Yangquan, there isn't any king of Qin that had ever been threatened.

You are forcing me in such a matter.

You think I will bear with such a traitor as yourself?

I am willing to die for the Great Qin.

It is easy for Your Majesty to kill me.

But can you shut everyone off?

Your Majesty, when you are concerned, you will become confused.

You should look at that alleged evidence more closely.

[Ode of the Yue Boatman; a folk song of the Yue people; written on a handkerchief]

[Hoalan's alleged personal note to Lu Buwei was written at the bottom of the handkerchief]

Lord Yangquan, you fabricated the evidence.

What should your punishment be?

This handkerchief is made of Shu Silk!

Everyone knows that Qin had already destroyed Bashu (Sichuan Province) and monopolized the market of Shu Silk.

Qin and Zhao had been at war for numerous years.

Silk in Zhao State mostly came from the states of Chu and Han.

Everyone is enveloped in the flames of war, where could the Shu Silk come from?!

Lu Buwei is a merchant that walked all over the world.

Others can't get it, he must have it.

The embroidery method used in the corner

has just been introduced to Xianyang three months ago.

The Queen loved it dearly.

How old is the Crown Prince? Was this embroidery method available ten years ago?

From the time the Queen got pregnant to the time Crown Prince was born.

I was next to her at all times.

Just by fabricating a handkerchief,

and simply saying it is a message conveyed to the biological father,

I think that

you are still asleep and dreaming. It is extremely ridiculous!

Lord Yangquan, you concocted an evidence, slandered Her Highness

and coerced His Majesty to abdicate the throne. That is treason.

It's her! It's this servant slave who deceived me.

Your Majesty, I didn't expect

that she would made up such a lie due to her jealousy and hatred.

Ah Man, why did you help to deceive His Majesty?

It's Lord Yangquan.

Lord Yangquan said if I don't show this evidence,

he would kill me.

This handkerchief really came from your room.

Nearing the end, you are still not repentant. Take her away.

Please forgive me, Your Majesty. Your servant slave didn't know...!

Your Majesty!

Lord Yangquan, you slandered Her Highness and Crown Prince.

Step by step, you forced His Majesty to abdicate the throne.

Do you really want to commit treason?

Grandmother, please seek justice for your grandson.

Empress Dowager, Lord Yangquan faked the evidence and distorted the truth

and provoked the royal father and son.

He smeared the reputation of the successor to the throne of Great Qin. This sin should not be allowed.

I'm the Emperor's uncle. Who dares to punish me?!

Men.

Your Majesty, you have already set the trap earlier.

You were just waiting to disagree with me and kill me out of resentment, right?

I do not like verbal disputes.

who would dare to criticize the prince?

I'll just kill him. Simple.

Your Majesty is wise.

Empress Dowager, Older Sister, this wasn't my original intention.

The original intention...release me!

My many years of reputation

was destroyed by you.

Today, I will ignore our sibling relationship

and clean the house for Empress Dowager!

Older Sister, you...are very evil.

Your Majesty, he was arrogant.

In a moment of anger,

I punished my family member in the cause of justice.

Your Majesty, you won't blame me, right?

How could I?

Lord Yangquan conducted sinister errands.

It was only just for His Majesty to abdicate the throne.

But he couldn't become the Emperor of Qin. Was there a need for you to exert so much efforts?

Lu Buwei.

What are you trying to say?

Lord Yangquan was just a puppet.

The mastermind is Prince Xi.

Lu Buwei, you haven't even solved the theft of the gold.

It's not your turn to interject.

Madam, it can't be that you still don't understand.

I don't have any case of the theft of the gold.

When I saw you leaving the city that day,

frankly, I already guessed that

you used several methods to transport the gold.

Do you know why I didn't expose you then?

You...Lu Buwei...

[ Flags of Qin ]

Zichu.

Let's make the decision today.

Prince Xi's army has mutinied.

Dear soldiers,

we must not let any traitors step into Xianyang City.

Bai Zhong, where did you scrape these disabled soldiers from?

And even dare to fight with me?

It's none of your business what type of soldiers I use.

With me here, I will never let you step into Xianyang City.

If you don't believe me, be brave and give it a try.

Prince, something bad must have happened in Xianyang.

Be careful!

Situ Que, you ruined my plan!

This task is a matter of life and death. Are you willing to do it?

Master, my sister's life and my life

have always belonged to you.

You don't need to ask.

I want you to kill Prince Xi for me.

Are you afraid?

I'm not afraid.

It's just that Prince Xi is talented, wise, brave and invincible.

I don't have the opportunity to get close to him.

I fear that I may ruin your plan.

No, you have one

but there's only just one chance.

Take him down!

His Majesty has issued a secret imperial decree to kill Prince Xi for rebelling.

Whoever defies the decree will be punished too!

So, the performance was acted out just for me.

Lu Buwei colluded with the direct descendant of the Bai family.

The Emperor of Qin arranged an ambush.

They hold the same view

and wanted my life.

Prince, there's no way out for you.

Just surrender.

Yin's descendants of Qin

he can only be killed and not humiliated!

Prince.

Yin descendants of Qin, if accused of treason,

can only be tried under Qin's law.

Today, you have been instigated by Lu Buwei to kill me.

Will he still be able to stay away from the mess?

Prince.

Zichu, you are really something.

You have resisted to show your hand

and have been waiting for today, right?

What did you say?

The heart of Qin's King is dark and impenetrable.

Go back and tell your Master.

The next person will be him.
