The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 43

Siluo,

You grow up in Xianyang since you were young.

You probably never seen Wang Family's embroidery?

Drawing tigers, drawing skin is easy but difficult to draw bones.

You dare to lie to me.

Who gave you the guts to do so ?

Your Highness.

What happened exactly?

Your highness. I've heard you and Crown Princess doesn't get along.

I came up with this plan because I wanted to make peace in between the two of you.

Did Consort Zhao wanted you to do this?

No, it wasn't.

It's all my own idea. Crown Princess doesn't know this.

If your highness wants to punish, please punish me.

Crown Princess really doesn't know.

She kept herself quite innocent.

If he doesn't know, then why did you do so?

Please allow me to explain. When your highness originally intended for me to marry Crown Prince.

Was for the purpose of keeping Crown Prince close tied with Mi Family Clan.

But now that Crown Princess returned to Qin. Your highness is angry.

My position is lowly, I dare not try to persuade Crown Princess.

Therefore...it's all my fault for not handling matters better. Please forgive me.

Siluo.

You clearly know I am trying to help you get the Crown Princess.

Why do you still beg favor for her?

Your highness, I am doing this not for Crown Princess.

but for your sake. The past eight years.

Your highness had been very kind and caring to Crown Prince.

It was not easy to establish the mother and son ties.

Shouldn't create disagreement between the two of you because of me.

Now your highness just recently got the position of Crown Prince, he still needs your help.

And if Mi Family wants to be remain in power also needs the Crown Prince's support.

Therefore I plead that your highness should consider the big picture.

Even if Crown Princess offend you very much.

Please hope your highness will let bygones be bygones.

Siluo, seeing that you have such sensibility.

I really underestimated you before.

You accompanied ZIchu for such long time.

Should rightfully become the Crown Princess' position.

Since consort Zhao came, you will really not get angry that you have to give up the position?

Siluo is also a woman,

how can I not be disappointed.

But the two of them mother and son suffered eight years.

Finally got back besides Crown Prince.

Such steadfastness and perseverance is not common.

In comparison, I am not a match.

Then better off to step backward so as to avoid Crown Prince's loathing.

Enough. I understand your reasoning.

I'll carefully consider this matter.

Take your leave.

Yes.

Why did your highness laughed?

She also has one son, Chengjiao. She really can sit tight.

To get Crown Princess' good side.

In order to also get Crown Prince's heart.

Using softness to combat toughness. That is a woman's best weapon.

Her doing this actually reminded me.

Once I have take care of Zixi.

Then wouldn't be too late to get rid of consort Zhao.

Men. Bring these bamboo slips to the Crown Princess.

Yes.

What are these?

Replying to Crown Princess, these are all important documents from numerous places that needs to checked.

Crown Prince asked that we bring it over for you to look over.

Crown Prince allowing me to get involve with politics?

Crown Princess, these are criminal cases involving women and also pleas from various locations from women.

We brought them over after arranging them in order.

Originally they are suppose to go to Queen Huayang but your highness never look at these.

Therefore still need to entrust them to you.

Take them away!

Crown Prince said you are the Crown Princess.

Naturally should take responsibility for it. Otherwise will be neglectful of duties.

Then will set royal grandson a bad example.

Subject takes my leave.

Women's jade goes to death

How would I know?

Didn't you use Qin Law to intimidate Queen Huayang.

How would you not know?

Why are you here?

I was asking you a question.

I only understand a smattering of it.

How would I really know Qin Law.

Only heard the soldiers speak of it on the way here. Use that to bluff her.

This woman abandon her husband and ran away.

Remarries another. Gave birth two years later.

New husband recently finds the truth.

But doesn't want to give up. Both person received charges.

If the new husband doesn't know the truth?

Those who doesn't know shouldn't be charged.

The Qin Law forbids marrying those who ran off.

Also forbids women from abandoning their son and remarry.

But there are exceptions.

Such as this case.

In this case.

Only can be consider adults after reaching fifteen.

If she is not an adult and didn't register officially.

Then the marriage would be null and void without consequences.

Yes. Come here, I'll personally read it for you to listen to.

How is it? Did the Crown Princess send someone to get me?

No.

-Then will not held responsible.. - That is what I said.

Also, look at this.

Look at this scroll.

Yongman.

Come, drink your medicine.

Be careful. What is that sound?

Is there something happening outside?

Greetings to Crown Princess, Royal Grandson.

Please listen well, this place will be newly renovated.

Windows, ceilings. Proceed with caution.

Seal the creaks in the corner of the wall.

Also change all the beddings to new ones.

What's wrong?

Crown Princess just returned back to Palace.

Crown Prince asked people to renovate Yongman Palace.

So that you may live more comfortably.

Father?

Your highness also said that Royal Grandson should study well.

Wait for your highness to create questions to test you.

Mother, I better return now to get prepared. I don't to ill prepared when father asks me.

Zheng'er.

I think that all is well.

There's no need for renovations.

Crown Princess is being considerate of us servants.

But who dares not to follow Crown Prince's orders?

Or else may I trouble you to speak with Crown Prince?

If I say there's no need to, then there's no need to!

How are you performing your tasks? What happens if you had crush the mistress?

- Yes. - Yes.

Crown Princess, in this case, really have to ask you to move.

Royal Descendant's wife, this way, please.

It's not appropriate for me to live here, so I should return to Yongmen Palace instead.

Princess Consort, Yongmen Palace is under renovation right now, and therefore not suitable for you to live in.

I will live with Zheng'er then.

That's even more unlikely. Crown Prince already found a teacher for Royal Grandson.

If you go, it's not convenient.

Already drank three doses. How come there are still no movements?

Prince consort, I only follow the prescription to get the medicine. I don't know anything else.

Are you sure no one found out?

What exactly happened? Speak!

Because this is medicine for calming the fetus.

What do you want?

It should be me who's asking you that.

- Take your leave. - Yes.

It is unfilial to have child during the mourning period.

You are three months pregnant.

Calculating the days, that was not inside the mourning period. Why can't we keep the child?

In addition, we are not the eastern states with strange customs.

Get rid of a child just for the sake of sensibility.

You still shouldn't change my medicine without my permission.

Your medicine?

What medicine of yours?

You originally don't even want to bear my child!

Why is this face so ugly?

Zixi, could it possibly be that you have true feelings for me?

That's a shame. I will not fall in love with you.

Don't you forget

that the both of us are in this for our mutual benefits.

Fine. Fine, for our mutual benefits.

You are now becoming more and more confident.

Almost to the point of being wildly arrogant.

Let me tell you.

I wouldn't even look at you, if it wasn't for the alliance marriage, I want to kept this child because I need an elder son.

I need a son,

and you are my wife.

You need to perform your wife's duty.

You have to give birth to this child for me.

Zixi.

Conduct yourself obediently and take care of the fetus. If anyone were to happen to the baby.

I won't let you off.

Physician.

Why not live well as a person instead of be a plaything in Xianyang ?

I should've mind my own business and not meddle in others.

We thought it was a trap again.

When we were first caught, Bai Zhong deliberately let us escape.

But all are traps.

Once we stayed long enough, no one wants to leave anymore.

Sorry. I'm really sorry.

He is trying to wear away your willpower.

This cold and vicious bastard.

Drink some water.

Please spare my life, General.

Take her away!

Who allowed you to keep a woman inside the army camp?

Only causing me troubles. The men takes care of outside matters and women manage the domestics.

Living peacefully with each other and the world will also be peaceful.

Those women who don't hold to the customs and causing troubles everywhere.

What? You want to kill me?

Or treat me like how you treat these female slaves? Keeps shaming me.

To fulfill your man pride?

Do you believe that I can cut of your tongue right now?

General, the embassy did send report back confirming that Physician Yin is indeed the Crown Princess' close friend.

Crown Prince also send commands that all outposts needs to take good care of Physician Yin.

If she really dies here, it would be difficult for us to justify ourselves to Xianyang.

Once you enter my camp, you are a soldier.

If she commits any crimes, she will be punished.

Starting from today, let her hang here.

Whenever she pleads for mercy, give her water to drink again.

Whoever dares to show mercy towards her, beat him with the rod eight times!

Yes.

Masssacre, lunatic,slaughterer.

Wants me to beg for forgiveness. You're better off dreaming.

Xiaochun.

Xiaochun.

Quick, quickly drink.

Quick!

You are too stubborn, will it kill you to admit your wrongdoing to the general.

I have lived for so long. I have never seen such a low-life man.

He wants me to admit defeat? He can.

Wait until he's dead.

The General is hurt. Get the physician.

Quick!

What are you doing? Let go!

Where are you taking me?

What do you want?

Physician Yin, this arrow contains poison.

I am without ability, can you please help.

Don't just look, you think of a way to save our General.

- Save him? - Yes! Quickly save him!

My Yin family has a teaching. Will always save a sick person.

but in the Handan war, he killed many people of Zhao state.

For the past years, he also killed many innocent people.

He can't even be considered as a human being. Yet you expect me to save him.

You should wait for death.

If you don't save him,

I...I will kill you!

If you kill her, how can we save the General?

Get off!

Physician Yin, since Lord Yangchun control the imperial court. Our troops

had always been the ones sent to the most dangerous missions. The General gathers up the female slaves.

Only intended to gain favor from the elites at Xianyang. To obtain more soldiers pay and disability pensions.

He is doing it for the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers. This is the only method.

You can't tell me this.

This hateful feud was established when Bai Zhong first attacked Handan.

I can save anyone except for him!

I was the one who was rash and underestimated the enemy and advance prematurely.

The General wouldn't got trapped by the bandits If he didn't try to save me.

He suffered this arrow for me.

I will die for him,

I only beg for you to just save his life!

Who allows you to make such a decision?

General!

Get lost! Tell her to get lost!

- General. - Get lost!

You won't ask for my help, so I still can't save you.

Crown Princess, these all need to be completed today. The official are waiting for a decision.

Pay with one's life for a murder. The verdict is to execute him. Go pass the command now.

According to Qin law. A man who rapes another's wife or daughter.

If hIs wife kills him, she is consider innocent.

What? Now you're willing to open your mouth to talk?

Is there a problem?

Wife abuse. Husband beats wife when he got angry.

Later the husband was punished. Why are the two bystanders also punished?

Those who saw a murder taking place within one hundred paces without helping will also get punished.

Seeing murder is such, also for seeing fights.

There is another question.

These are all old cases,

even the bamboo slips are turning yellow. Unless it involves capital cases,

the lower ranked officials should be in charge.

When did it start that such small matters

are being handed to the Crown Prince to settle?

Of course, I gave them the instructions

to bring these cases out of storage

so that you will familiarize yourself with the Qin Code of Law.

Then why do you say these needs to completed today?

That day when I went to see you in Yongmen Palace,

I saw Lu Buwei teaching you the Qin Code of Law.

Haolan, you know the reason why I had to take in concubines.

Why did you ignore me?

Are you asking the Royal Descendant's wife or Li Haolan?

Is there a difference?

If you are asking the Royal Descendant's wife, I can understand.

If you are asking Li Haolan,

I'm not happy! What are you laughing at?

If I was at Zhao State and had two or three lovers to combat my loneliness,

- Will you be happy? - How dare you?!

According to Qin Law, if a husband has one wife and two concubines, his ears shall be sliced.

If a husband has two wives, he shall be executed.

The Qin Emperor has a harem full of concubines, and you also surround yourself with plenty of beautiful women.

It's obvious that the Qin Code of Law makes exceptions for the nobility and for those who has power, so why would I want to study it?

Haolan I'm going to only say these words once, so you better listen well.

I won't justify myself. There are benefits in retaining them.

When I no longer have use for them, I will dismiss everyone.

I will not keep them around and upset you.

When would that be?

Wait for me to become the legitimate

King of Qin.

It's mourning period. Crown Prince needs to follow the custom.

The sleeping quarter belongs to me tonight.

As for Crown Prince, I will have someone bring beddings over.

It cracked.

What's wrong?

- You should drink the medicine. - I will do it on my own.

No, I am the doctor. I insist on feeding you.

Hurry up and walk faster!

General!

Don't touch me!

Remaining poisons are not yet eliminated.

General.

When will I fully recover?

Idiot. Of course, it will need to wait till I'm safely back in Xianyang

- before the poison can be totally eliminated. - You!

We have to temporary stay her to brandish the bandits. Can't return to Xianyang yet.

It's okay. In any case, the poison is in your body and it's your body that is in pain.

I can wait for eight or ten years. It's perfectly fine.

Fine. From now on, you will stay by my side twenty four hours a day.

Royal Father, how can you just suddenly leave?

Why did you leave me all by myself to live?

Is His Majesty still the same?

Yes.

Empress Huayang is here.

Your majest, back then King Tengwen wanted to mourned for three full years.

All his officials opposed that. Why?

As the King, you should take the burdens of the state.

It's okay to do the utmost filial duties but not in excess.

You've been crying without drinking and eating, and crying on daily basis. Acceptable for one or half month.

But to do longer, how can your body handle this?

A short mourning period is now normal in our state.

Why do you need to make it hard for yourself?

I don't care. I miss my Royal Father.

You should leave. Stop bothering me!

I've said nice and said it mean but you refused to be persuaded.

You are starving yourself to death.

You need to listen to me, quickly end the mourning and take your throne.

What crap!

How can I complete the mourning in less than two months ?

No wonder father said you were a shrew.

You are too disrespectful.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Open the door! Lu Buwei, open the door!

Open the door!

Miss Bai, our master truly is not home.

Why is he avoiding me?

How can there be such a woman like you in the kingdom?

You keep chasing after men. Anyone would be afraid of you.

Afraid of me?

Do I look really weird?

Master!

Open the door! Open the door for me!

Miss Bai, do you have time for a get together?

Who are you?

You don't know me, but you got into my carriage. Aren't you afraid that I'll sell you off?

Walking on Xinynag streets If I dont appropriate lost property nor preach and follows rules.

Who would dare to sell me?

Tell me. Who exactly are you?

Lord Lu and I are old friends.

Miss Bai, do you like him?

Yes. I like Lu Buwei.

What are you going to do if he doesn't like you?

Life is long. I'm still young.

I can use a lot of time to let him like me.

You really are a child.

It's you all who are thinking too seriously.

No matter what as long as I work hard,

I won't regret it if there's no results.

Liking someone means using your heart to pursue them.

But in world matters, just because you wish for something doesn't mean you can get the desired result.

You keep chasing after Lu Buwei and he keeps avoiding you.

How can you let him love you then?

I'll just...

To be together day and night.

Do you not think that I don't know that?

But he won't even give me a chance.

If he don't want to give you the opportunity, you should create one.

Everything will depend on your method.

Do you have a way?

Talk to the Emperor.

If I talk to the Emperor, I will be able to marry Lu Buwei?

Who is the Emperor? Would he notice about me?

By saying this, of course, I have my reason. Just do accordingly.

Why are you helping me?

That's not important. The important thing is that you can achieve your wish.

Are you telling the truth?

Absolutely.

Fang Ju was original from Wei State.

He received a lot of cold treatment for referring the General who surrendered to Zhao.

Its not surprising that now King of Wei is using heavy bribes to win him over. Wants him return to Wei

I stopped their people before they enter the city.

What do you plan to do?

If Wei people wants to bring gifts then we need to allow such good gesture.

-How will we do it? -Not conspicuously, of course.

Let's wait till it's late at night and secretly do the delivery.

- Why? - The more we hide it.

Will only caused people to be more afraid of being found out.

Royal Father's health is not well recently.

Madame Huayang is worried about whether she will become the Empress of Qin, so she is trying to

force Royal Father to shorten the mourning period and assume his role as Emperor

and specially prepared a banquet.

Your majesty is also impatient. Or else why would he tacitly consent for the officials to change his title?

Or else why would he tacitly consent for the officials to change his title ahead of schedule?

But this is the best time for us to take action.

In the year 250 B.C.

Ying Zhu, the second son of King Zhaoxiang of Qin was officially crowned

as the King of Qin

and made Madame Huayang the Queen of Qin.

It will be arduous journey for the Prime Minister to travel to Wei state this time.

I will toast you for the King with this cup of water in place of wine.

The Queen erroneously praised. This is only the duty of a royal subject.

Your majesty, when Prime Minister served as envoy, he once secretly met with the Wei King.

I suspect this act is traitorous.

Nonsense, back then Wei King listened to slanderous talk,

I was only able to escaped Wei State by the skin of my teeth.

This diplomatic mission is by the King's command.

Why would I secretly meet with Wei King?

You are maligning me.

That is fallacious reasoning.

Royal father, back then Wei State Central Senior Official, Shu Fu

was once jealous of Prime Minister's abilities. He continusly slandered him.

Prime Minister was severely tortured almost to death.

Due to Grandfather's trust, he was able to achieve such high prestige these days.

How would he requite kindness with enmity?

Let down Grandfather's recognition of him.

One the escape route, Prime Minister

once received Wang Jie and Zheng Anping's help.

Therefore due to this personal reason he recommended these two people to our King.

Later when Zheng Anping surrendered to Zhao.

Wang Ji was executed for colluding with the enemy.

Those are all also facts. Prime Minister's power and influence are not as before.

Wanting to find another way out is also understandable.

Lu Buwei, prime minister guided me for numerous years.

He exhausted all he got, without any disloyalties.

Regarding the matter of Lord Zheng, Grandfather also commanded that we shall never bring that up again.

Today you are brining up old scores.

Are you disobeying Grandfather's commands at his deathbed?

Last night at midnight, someone secretly delivered two boxes of gold into the Prime Minister's residence.

Coincidentally got caught by patrol guards, they were arrested on the spot.

I would like to report this to Royal Father.

Your Majesty, there's no such thing.

There was no gold, especially no gifts at midnight.

I definitely was not aware of this matter.

Shut up, you. Fang Ju.

Men!

Your Majesty, you must not listen to hearsay.

This is a setup! It's a setup!

- Drag him out. - This is a setup!

Your Majesty, this is a setup!

It's a setup, Your Majesty!

Not to mention this time he received the enemy's bribe.

As a Prince of Great Qin,

You need to enforce the law fairly. Set an example.

How can you beg mercy for a traitor

due to personal benefits?

Evidence? Where's the evidence? This is just hearsay.

Royal father, please consider that Prime Minister worked hard and performed valuable servies.

Is it acceptable for him to be arrogant because of one's achievements?

To go beyond the Qin Law and disobey the King's trust?

Prince, please speak with caution.

In my opinion, you must have plotted this a long time ago.

We can easily find thru interrogation whether the gift bearer is from Wei State.

Why would we need to scheme for it?

Enough!

Stop arguing!

You are making me frustrated with your fights.

I have my own idea regarding this.

No one is allowed to mention this again during the banquet. Continue with the banquet.

Begin the music.

Bastard. I said to continue with the banquet!

When did you hear that I wanted music?!

Your Majesty, what's wrong now?

I get more frustrated when I hear this vulgar music.

I am painstakingly preparing a banquet.

Its to make you happy.

You don't like the wines and the music.

Everyone is according to your wishes. What else do you want?

But you are upset all day.

Who are you showing your face to?

Precious...wife. I'm not going against you.

You saw that I am frustrated. That Fang Ju.

He's making me frustrated.

I wasn't directing this at you.

Then you should smile.

When I'm frustrated, I really can't smile.

Come! Quick come!

Yes, yes. Come, quick come!

This way, this way. Jump!

Jump!

Come here!

- Grab it! - This way, this way. Yes, yes.

This way.

Come, come here. Greet His Majesty.

Nice! How interesting!

Your majesty. It's been several months.

First time see you looking so happy.

Wife, this lady...

This young girl is very interesting.

She is really interesting.

What' your name?

King of Qin Uncle, when I was small you held me. Do you not remember?

I...

Looks like...is it possible...is it possible that you're General Bai Qi's daughter?

Yes, I'm Bai Ling'er.

She's grown up now.

His Majesty has decreed that whoever can make him smile...

I will grant that person a wish.

What do you say? Please feel free to ask for a request.

No matter what request it is, are you willing to grant it?

Of course.

King of Qin Uncle will definitely promise you!

King of Qin Uncle, I want to marry Lu Buwei!

What's this?

Bai Ling'er! Stop causing mischief. Leave.

Lu Buwei is from a lowly level, I dare not marry up.

Official Lu is too humble.

Our great Qin do not look at family background. We only look at ability.

The two of you are both beautiful and handsome. A perfect match.

It's rare that this girl is so infatuated.

Royal father, you should give such lovely couple your blessing.

Your majesty, I had once married a wife, of Mu family.

I don't plan to marry again.

That wife was of parental command.

She passed away due to illness only after three months.

It has been many years. You should give up.

Lu Buwei, are you out of words?

Look at her. She's...

Bai Ling'er, don't worry. I will let you make the decision.

Lu Buwei must marry you.

Thank you Your Majesty!

Prince's wife, you can't go in. Prince's wife, you can't go in.

Take your leave.

Yes.

You are not surprised to see me at all.

Crown Prince already told me in advance.

The reason no one revealed your secret is due to consideration the aid you gave before.

Did he also tell you that, during the banquet tonight,

His Majesty gave Madam Bai to Lu Buwei?
