The Legend of Hao Lan

Episode 20

Because you love him.

When you love someone, you will always stubbornly help him look for excuses.

Since you are so sad and heartbroken, I can actually be at ease.

You also have blood and flesh, you can cry and hurt.

I still wondered what happened to you,

that lead you to seem so unfazed by anything.

Master, Haolan has such a proud personality,

after you humiliating her like this, everything will really end.

No one else understands her more than me.

Before I did this,

I already knew the consequences.

Ah Yue does not understand, not even half of it.

I am just a businessman of humble origins.

Even if I took her away to live happily, so what?

The word "power",

my hard earned family wealth, carefully decorated home,

even her.

All of these, I cannot protect them.

This is a businessman.

A humble businessman.

So, I personally dragged her out of the mud,

then coldly pushed her back down again.

I want to let her know

that without power,

one cannot protect one's most precious items in the world.

- But... - There are no buts.

The banquet date approaches.

You must stay by her side and help her properly.

You may leave.

I won't go.

Situ Yue,

just who is the master and who is the servant?

I come from a lowly background, but I am wholly thinking for Master's wellbeing.

When my brother and I were about to starve to death,

it was you who brought us back to the Lü family.

Not only did you give us somewhere to live, you even taught us to read and write.

This is me repaying your grace.

Because of this, I cannot just idly watch you repeatedly make mistakes.

I want you to leave, can you not hear?

- Master! - Leave!

Haolan.

I have something to tell you.

I think there is no need for this.

If you don't listen, then I will wait here for you everyday.

Will you not be afraid of others' gossip?

I will wait for you in Jiyue Palace.

Your Highness, what do you want to do?

I still remember when we first met.

I ran into assassins,

my life was in grave danger but you helped me bandage my wounds.

Your eyes were lowered and you had such a gentle demeanour.

I will never forget it for the rest of my life.

The one who saved you that day was Xiuyu.

It was her who lured the assassins away.

But the first time I opened my eyes,

the one I saw was you.

From that day onward, whenever it's Shangsi Festival (Double Third Festival),

we would go out and tread on green (walk on green grass).

We would watch kites fill the sky

and listen to rural young ladies sing.

I was scared that if others found out, they would bring you danger.

I would always ride on a horse by myself,

and silently follow your carriage.

Until I sent you back to the manor, I never revealed myself.

But in my heart, I was so happy.

Your Highness.

Maybe I never loved you at all.

Haolan. Don't say such words out of anger.

I am speaking the truth.

That time, my mother and I were bullied and I was anxious to escape.

Your Highness was like a floating support in front of me.

Like a kind older brother,

who took me out to play and let me have room to breathe.

I thought that I had affections for you.

But later, when Xiuyu stirred up trouble for me,

my first thought was,

"If I had known earlier, I should have let her have you instead."

If you really love someone sincerely,

even if you have to get hurt you won't have a change of heart.

Because a person's heart is not controlled by logic.

Is it still love when you yield so easily?

No. I don't believe.

I don't believe in every sentence and every word you say.

Believe it or not, so be it.

We have no reason to talk to each other again.

Haolan...

I know I have done many things that caused you hurt.

Since we are at this stage now, there's only one option.

- What are you doing? - Just kill me.

As long as it can help you to forget your hatred and hostility, I'm willing to do anything.

- Haolan. - Let me go!

Just kill me. Aren't you filled with hatred for me?

Stab it into my heart deeply.

As long as you won't say you don't love me. I'm not willing to hear that!

Let go of my hand!

You think I am acting. Right?

Then, I will prove it to you.

Prince.

Haolan.

Prince!

The physician said it was fortunate that it missed (the heart) by a bit.

If not, no one would be able to save you.

Prince. You are too reckless.

As long as it would make you look at me again,

I'm willing to do anything.

It's getting late.

I have to go back.

Promise me you will come and see me again.

Ya'er is here.

Elder Brother. You really do have a good method.

You were able to erase all the hurt in the past so easily.

Now, you have restored your friendship with that beauty.

If I say it wasn't merely a method?

But a faux act that turns into real affection.

The love I have for Haolan was never a pretense.

In this case,

Elder Brother, you even make use of your own emotions?

In order to achieve a goal,

there's nothing in this world that cannot be make use of.

Even if it's one's own life, let alone a woman.

What function can Haolan really be good for?

That you would take it to such great pains?

As long as she would come closer to me,

she would serve a good purpose some day.

Be careful, all of you.

Yes.

- You two, put it behind that over there. - Yes.

Be meticulous.

Sister Haolan, have some water.

Lady-in-waiting Li. It's all ready over there.

Have some water first before going there.

Master.

Is it a busy period lately?

Indeed. So busy that I don't get to see her.

Sister Haolan has not rested for two days consecutively.

I kindly persuaded her to quietly get a little rest.

But she was stubborn and refused to rest.

Qin Royal Descendant

Why are you here?

I was just walking around.

Accidentally found the main hall fully lit.

Guessing that you might be here.

Where is General Gongsun?

He is drunk sleeping under the peach tree.

The night is deep, let me take you back.

I haven't complete my tasks yet.

It's time to go back.

Let's go.

How is your wound on your back?

Thanks for Qin Royal Descendant's caring. It's much better.

Did you notice that what you said most to me.

is the word thanks.

Is it?

Haolan.

Why do you avoid me recently?

Because I am good to you.

So you are worry I have ulterior motives towards you.

Qin Royal Descendant, that's not my meaning.

I like you.

But my heart is for another.

I know.

From the start I deliberately got close to you because of you position.

You've said that before.

Is there anything else that needs to be accounted for?

I...

He is right behind us.

Don't turn around. He is looking at us right now.

Hoalan, I agreed to help you give him a beating.

But never found a good opportunity.

How about today? I will help you give him a beating. okay?

What?

Did he leave?

Don't turn around.

He is still there.

Did he leave?

Still not.

- How about now? - He left.

Don't worry. I wasn't confessing to you.

Also I will not confess to you.

Qin Royal Descendant.

A gentleman will not steal the love of another.

We are good friends. Letting him win three times is nothing.

But only three times.

Let?

Let's go.

Add more of this.

Royal Descendant, Prince Yu and Treasurer Lu is here.

I know it. I will get ready now.

Elder brother is currently wantonly bribing other people.

He not only won over big general Gao Meng, also many officials that father King depends on.

The fight for throne is already like a raging fire.

Prince Jiao already obtained the Queen's support.

You need to forge harder as well.

What is the meaning of that?

Make plans to kill Prince Jiao as early as possible.

No.

Since Prince Jiao is unable to make a painful decision.

Then your good head shall be on someone's platter sooner or later.

Lu Buwei shall not keep you company any further.

Wait.

Prince changed his mind?

What do you want me to do?

Tomorrow banquet is a great opportunity to start.

There will be a load of whitefish that will be tribute gift.

I already bribed the whitefish chef.

At that time.

Who?

Hoalan.

You are awake?

My dried flower drink still didn't properly brew out. Came to ask for your advise.

But I fell asleep on the desk.

I saw that you were very tired so I didn't disturb you.

Prince.

Why is everyone so nervous?

Did something happened?

We were merely talking about tomorrow's banquet.

Wondering how the hall will be decorated.

Curious.

Only curious.

In that case.

Since both of you are here, I will come back for the advise another day.

That's well, then you should go back to rest well.

I shall take my leave first.

What should we do?

If she leak out any rumor our plans will be for naught.

I trust her.

Royal Descendant, there is no woman in this world who can keep a secret.

Prince.

She original belongs to me.

Please continue with the next plan.

Why are you looking for me?

I have something to say to you.

Don't worry, I wouldn't reveal any secrets.

I will keep my mouth shut but not for you, its for Royal Descendant.

You are misunderstanding.

I have something I need to give to you personally.

This is Li family's object from forebears.

When you pawned it, I found it back.

Didn't have chance to return to you.

Now, its time to return to its owner.

This jade pendant used to be my favorite.

I used to think it is symbol of my father's love and the family's value.

But later I found that those are only moon in the water, flowers in the mirror, completely useless.

If you like it, you should keep it yourself.

Merchants hand already touched it.

I do not want it anymore.

Why?

Because it's too dirty.

Master, you want to keep watch over Sister Hoalan.

Do you not trust her anymore?

I am just worry, someone might used our gap.

Putting a spoke within.

- A Yue don't understand. - You don't need to understand.

You just remember to keep an eye on her all the time.

But you shouldn't push Sister Hoalan further and further.

Do as per my command.

Please go.

Rising Sun Palace.

What is this?

A servant came to bring this. Didn't leave any words.

Willow branch?

That is quite strange.

Who gives willow branch as a present?

That is so stingy.

Willow branch Sangsi holiday.

What?

It's nothing.

Hoalan, I knew you will come.

Your highness found out Prince was hurt and command me to deliver medicine here.

Hope Prince will get well soon.

Don't worry. I told physician.

No tell anyone. They all think I was hurt from sword practice.

Since the item is delivered. I shall take my leave.

Hoalan.

You are still willing to come see me.

Does that mean you will forgive me?

Prince, Hoalan already said.

Things are already over. I didn't put it in my thoughts.

Why does Prince still think about it.

Then why did you come today?

-That's because of the Queen.- - No.

You have to work on the banquet tomorrow, you can easily ask someone else.

You are still caring about me, isn't it?

Hoalan, when we first met?

I was met by an assassin, under great duress.

That was the time when I was most desolate and helpless time.

That was not the first such occurence in my life.

Also not the last time.

Breaking promises and abandoning affections are all my doing.

I must admit to that.

But being in that environment, I have no other choice.

Since it's in the past, I ask for your forgiveness.

I only ask for one more chance.

Give me one more chance to compensate you. Okay?

Prince.

Please allow me to think about it.

Think carefully.

She is but only an ordinary woman.

So easily manipulate by people.

All the women in the world have a soft heart.

The strategy of a grievance person is usual the most effective.

You want to let her betray Lu Buwei.

Didn't you notice?

She and Lu Buwei already have a gap.

I understand Hoalan. She appears gentle.

In reality she is ambitious and proud. A mere Lu Buwei.

A base merchant, what can he give her?

Don't forget. She is from upper class.

Will not remain together with a lowly merchant.

But I see that she is still affectionate.

Didn't make any statements.

People say old love are unforgettable.

I have know her many years, shared obstacles.

I refuse to believe that she has no old feelings for me.

Even just a little is enough.

I can let her be used by me.

Physician Yin.

Physician Yin.

It's hurt.

Where did this pigeon came from?

This is letter carrier pigeon from the palace. Don't know how it got hurt and fell from the sky.

The guard picked it up and I just immediately brought it over.

Looks like it was wounded by a fierce beast.

Hold it.

How would there be any fierce beast inside the palace?

Maybe he was hurt outside the palace and flew back?

All right, no matter what.

You will take this wounded pigeon.

I will come back every day to check on it. You should take good care of it.

You come back.

If it looses even one feather. you will answer for it.

He came to look for you.

This person must be sick.

Right, its lovesick!

What are you saying?

So anxious to come her to get wretched. What else if not lovesick?

Every day if it's not a guard getting wounded or himself getting wounded.

Doesn't that show ulterior motive?

No wonder the saying goes. Use one's body to repay the gratitude of saving one's life.

That day you saved him, it got stuck to his heart.

I am not loved-by-all as you are.

When my mother passed away.

There is no one in this world who really loves me.

Hoalan, why do you say that?

Father's love demanded my sacrifice for the clan and his career.

Prince Jiao's love

is for his use any time.

As for Lu Buwei...

What about Lu Buwei?

In his heart

Ambition and power is foremost.

- Hoalan. - All right.

I wouldn't joke anymore. I have a serious matter to seek you for.

- You. - Shhh...

Lets speak inside.

Please.

Come.

Please.

What time is it already?

Han consort is still in bed.

You mind such a thing?

Beloved consort is normal weak bodied.

Even the physician said needs good rest. Should not be disturbed.

Let her be. Wake until she is awake.

Your highness is speaking ill of me again?

Come here.

Was waiting for you.

The jade on your person is so brilliant.

For a second I mistook it for Hesi Jade.

Hesi jade is worth several cities.

Your highess treasured it so, rarely shows to anyone.

I was probably mistaken.

Hesi Jade is big as a plate.

How can it be worn?

This jade pedant that I gifted to Qinhua.

Is not inferior to the priceless Hesi Jade.

Your highness is truly generous.

Only Han consort's beauty

can get your highness adoration.

Look at that.

Under the bright moon, among the sea of candlelights.

It's beauty didn't get dimmed.

Really open one's field of vision.

That is really that precious?

I have told you many times.

This pendant is priceless. You never believed it.

You should treasure it from now on.

No matter how precious it is still an object.

What is the big deal?

What kind of fish?

This is a new tribute, whitefish.

Silvery color, fresh taste. Your Highness, please have a taste.

- Please punish my crime, Prince. - It's okay.

Come. Everyone taste the fish.

Your Highness, since this banquet is especially prepared for me.

Seeing all this characters fighting

is quite boring.

Go down.

How about we have hunting competition?

- What do you think, your highness? - Sure.

Then let's use this jade pendant as the prize.

No...that's not good.

Don't forget this jade pendant is priceless.

That is Zhao State's rare treasure.

This gold cup.

Will be the hunting competition's prize.

Great.

Princess Qinhua is really as rumored to be.

Her beauty is incomparable.

Heard since Qinhua entered the palace. The imperial harem is a mere decoration.

Even if I possess such beauty.

I will also hide in the deep palace, exquisitely cared for.

You have time to make fun of others.

I heard that your Highness intends to marry you to Prince Yu.

Tell me honestly if you like it.

Look at you, marriage is not for jesting.

You are still talking about it.

Look.

Good.

So anxious you can't stand still.

Prince Yu is not yet out yet.

Brother Yu, it's your turn.

My archery skills is not up to par with elder brother. I shouldn't try it.

Don't be so serious, it's for royal father's enjoyment.

Catch.

Elder brother already got the heart of the cup.

Even if I do same, it's not interesting.

Anyone in the audience can assist me?

Miss.

What instructions do the master have?

Please follow me. Just need to stand still.

Please.

Pangming.

Pangming, please wake up.

Pangming.

Your highness you gifted this pendant to me already, is that so?

Yes.

Since it's Qinhua's, it's up to my decision?

Han consort, what are you trying to do?

Heard that in about a hundred steps, Yang Youji

would be able to shoot through a willow leaf.

He could even shoot a hole through a seven-layered armor.

That is indeed a truly magical archer.

Right here is a piece of jade ornament that happens to have a hole in the middle.

An arrow happens to be able to shoot through it.

Prince, I wonder if you would like to have a go at it?

Consort Han. That absolutely should not be done.

If that piece of jade ornament is damaged,

who would be able to bear the responsibility of guilt?

Your Majesty. the archery skill set of Yu'er is still a long way from excellence, we can't take the risk.

Royal Father. This piece of jade ornament is a precious treasure in the world.

I'm afraid...

If you dare not try, just say it.

What's the point of saying it's a precious treasure in the world, or that it's unrivaled?

That's really uninteresting.

The heroes of the state of Zhao are no more than this.

Archery that's just a child's play. Not watching it is fine too.

Please wait.

Allow me a try.

Prince, please.

This princess of Han State keeps on pressurizing.

Isn't she humiliating our state of Zhao for not having anyone?

Are you fine?

The winner is the one who shoots pass the gold cup.

Prince, you've lost.

It's not important who wins or who loses.

This is just a child's play. It's good enough to just be happy.

- Good! - Good!

- Good! - Good!

Hunting shot?

This piece of jade ornament is a precious treasure in the world.

It's also Royal Father's kind intention.

So, I request Consort Han to treat it with care.

That will be good for our states of Zhao and Han

to remain as allies forever.

Prince, thank you for your reminder.

I will bear it in my heart.

Good thinking, Yu'er.

Qiong Hua. Who should we bestow this gold cup to?

Both Princes' archery skills are very outstanding.

I think that Prince Yu's method is more interesting.

That matches my thoughts too.

Yu'er didn't disappoint me.

It's one level higher.

Men. Award the gold cup to Yu'er.

Great.

Thanks royal father.

Congratulations to Brother Yu.

Your highness.

Get the physicians.

Your highness.

Han Consort, what is the matter?

Your highness.

Get the physician.

Your highness.

Hurry.

Hurry.

- Come get the medicine. - Yu'er are you well?

Hurry. Men.

Please distribute to everyone.

Your highness.

Come master.

Master, medicine.

Master, take this quickly.

Come.

Physician Yin, come quick.

Master, are you better?

Your highness, she is dead.
