The Legend of Haolan

Episode 12

We have the soldiers, but we don't have the provisions to feed them.

What are they going to eat and drink?

Lu Buwei did use silver and gold to purchase good will for the Emperor.

But now, do we let our soldiers feed on tree barks?

I am willing to donate my personal wealth to the soldiers fighting at the front line.

I am also willing to donate my personal wealth.

By using money to purchase good will for Your Majesty, Lu Buwei managed to

impress both the nobilities and the commoners.

They are willing to contribute funds generously.

What about our dear Ministers?

Royal Father, I am willing to donate a thousand coins of gold.

I will donate five hundred.

I will donate three hundred.

I will donate six hundred.

I will donate two hundred.

I will donate three hundred.

I will donate two hundred.

I will donate two hundred.

I will donate a hundred.

Treasurer Lu.

Yes, Your Majesty.

The honor you bought for me is indeed priceless. Well done.

The good will you gained for me is really priceless. Well done!

Thank you, Your Majesty, for your compliment.

I am not worthy of your praise.

You have been worrying about the issues in the imperial court.

How could I not be aware of General Lian Po's delaying warfare tactics?

But now both states have been at a stalemate for a long time.

Qin army's insignificant Chieftain of the Multitude.

He inflicted serious damage to our army at the Yuxi River Valley.

Our army has suffered a huge loss.

General Lian Po can use his delay tactic, but the Zhao state can't afford it!

If this drags on, once Qin army attacks Handan,

we will become a sheet of loose sand! (state of disunity)

Prince, I don't understand about matters of the imperial court.

but if you are so agitated, you will harm your health.

Is this worth your bother?

If you didn't cause so much trouble

and turned me into a laughing stock,

I would not have become so isolated at the Imperial Court.

Prince.

Your father and your uncle never put in a good word for me.

They were only looking out for themselves.

Tell me,

what have I gained from marrying you, except to clean up the messes you make?

You only married me for my family's support?

Why else would I? All of you only wanted me for my power and status.

That is the reason you treat me with respect and deference.

But we are husband and wife!

All marriages are based on an exchange of personal advantages.

A man has to be in control of his family and take care of his parents and his wife,

and a woman wants to find a man who would offer her sustenance and protection.

As for us, what I want from you is the support of your powerful family.

And you, you want the status of being a Princess Consort.

Let's be honest with each other, and stop pretending that you are in love.

It is nauseating!

-It's not like that! -Shut up!

- I'm sincere! - Shut up!

- I'm really in love with you! - Shut up!

- Let me go! Let me go! - Prince.

I can't breathe!

- Let me go! - Princess Ya is here!

- Princess Consort! - Elder Brother.

Sister-in-law, what's going on?

I'm fine. A while ago, I was careless, tripped and fell.

Look, the cup broke.

Elder Brother, how could you be like this?

You should take good care of your wife.

How could you let Sister-in-law get hurt like this?

Xiuyu, what's wrong? Are you hurt? Let me take a look.

You have a cut.

Aren't you going to get the medicine now?

Hurry and go!

Yes.

Ya'er, why don't you spend some time with Xiuyu?

She is bored at the palace.

Of course I will.

Senior Brother, hurry, go back to work.

I have something to say to Sister-in-law.

All right, but remember to put on the medicine.

I will.

Sister-in-law, my brother treats you very well.

Yes, he does.

However, I am concerned that he appears troubled recently.

I wonder what happened during the imperial court session.

Elder Brother does not want you to worry, that's why he won't tell you anything.

Lately, Royal Father trusts Lu Buwei a lot.

Lu Buwei is working together with Prince Yu and the Prime Minister against Elder Brother.

Would Older Brother still have any say in the imperial court session now?

Princess, I thought you like Prince Yu.

Elder brother was raised by my mother since young, naturally very close to me.

but Prince Yu is Consort Yun's son.

Since young, he has been pretending to win a good reputation for himself.

Now that he has the assistance of Lu Buwei,

he doesn't think highly of older brother.

Sister-in-law, I remember now.

That older sister of yours,

she came into the palace on the recommendation of the Prime Minister,

so it's likely they have their own devious agenda.

What agenda?

This Li Haolan is going to become Royal Father's concubine.

When we meet her, we will need to address her as Mother.

In the future, in the imperial court, there will be Prince Yu, Lu Buwei.

In the harem, Li Haolan will have pillow talk with His Majesty.

I fear that older brother won't have any foothold again.

Look at what I'm saying.

I specially came here to visit you and talked about these unhappy matters instead.

Sister-in-heart, don't take this to heart.

By the way, the flowers in the garden are blooming beautifully.

If you have the time, you should take a stroll there.

Alright.

Treasurer Lu, I'm taking my leave.

Lu Buwei.

What that Prince Yu just now?

That's right. Consort Yun is now His Majesty's favorite.

Prince Yu may be the next ruler.

Of course, if you become His Majesty's favorite,

the power in the house will be different.

Lu Buwei, how many masks do you have?

If you dare to make me become His Majesty's woman, I will ensure that you won't get anything.

What do you mean?

If I need to marry someone who I don't love and sacrifice myself for the rest of my life,

you definitely won't get the power and status that you want.

This is an exchange and also a warning.

Who wants you to marry someone else?

Isn't this what you plan to do?

If I can really bear to let you marry His Majesty,

why would I still be worried about Prince Jiao?

Before you make any decisions, you must get my consent.

This is a collaboration and not being made use of.

Do you know why His Majesty insisted on this?

Someone told me that Princess Ya went to see His Majesty.

He subsequently went to Rising Sun Palace.

Does this information make you think of anything?

So, it was indeed Princess Ya.

Since the Princess has been scheming,

I should deliver a big gift too.

What idea do you have?

His Majesty's envoy has already set off for Chu state with five big carriage of gifts.

Did you manipulate the gifts?

I heard that the Crown Prince of Chu is young, handsome, brave and passionate.

It so happened that he matches our Princess very well.

Lu Buwei, you are really very bold.

It is impolite not to reciprocate.

[ Rising Sun Palace ]

Did I startle you?

Your Majesty.

Is there something you need to see me for?

Pardon?

I...

Did you not?

Then why did someone report it?

You, come here.

Your Majesty. It's just the right time.

The Empress wants me to verify the list of officials who will attend the memorial ceremony.

Let the Minister of Rites take care of such matters.

You don't need to personally bother about them.

The Empress wants Your Majesty to take a look at the list. I don't dare to delay it.

All right... I'll look at it.

Everything looks great.

Haolan, you are doing a great job. I'm in total agreement.

Well, I've taken a look at the list.

This should be fine now. Right?

Thank you, Your Majesty.

I will take my leave now.

Haolan.

If I ask the Empress for you to come over to serve me, would you be willing?

Any woman from the Kingdom of Zhao will consider it a great blessing to serve Your Majesty.

I would not dare complain.

I have a lot of beautiful women around me.

But I just lack someone who understands me.

When you come to my side,

I will let your wordless complaint turn into complete willingness.

Your Majesty, the Empress...

I'm here to see you. It is nobody else's business.

Look at you, you have lost weight from exhaustion.

After the memorial ceremony, I will give you your own palace.

You will no longer have to serve others.

The Prince of Qin's name was on the original list,

but I managed to secretly erase his name.

The Emperor has already approved this altered list.

You've done a good job.

I will arrange for the Prince to leave the Kingdom of Zhao during the memorial ceremony.

The Emperor and Empress will leave for the ceremony soon.

You need to speed up your arrangements for the Prince's departure.

You should be careful too.

After the Prince leaves, I will come back and get you.

Lu Buwei.

What?

We've gone through a lot while working together.

Please remember your promise never to leave me behind.

I trust you.

Your Highness, everything has been arranged.

Your Highness.

Royal Descendant, Lord Lu.

Everything has been packed. You could leave any time.

Leave? To where?

You didn't know? The Prince also has to go to Mafu Mountain.

The Prince is from the Kingdom of Qin, why would he attend the memorial ceremony for the Kingdom of Zhao?

It's the Emperor who ordered that the Prince be present for the ceremony.

I overheard at the door that you have already made the preparations.

What did you prepare?

Lord Lu meant that he has prepared the chess board.

But it's a pity that I won't be able to play chess with you now.

Why would you say this?

It's the same if we play along the trip too.

Lord Lu, you are going too?

Of course.

The horse carriage is very shaky.

When would you still have the heart to play chess? You are too impromptu.

It's only to find joy in sorrows.

General Gongsun, you are making fun of us.

Continue chatting. I have instructions for my subordinates. I'm taking my leave now.

What's going on?

Prince Jiao advised His Majesty

to include my name in the list for the trip.

The ghost is not scattered, the soul is still here. (Bad people and things have been eliminated but the bad influence is still at work)

Physician Yin, why are you on the name list for the trip?

His Majesty revised the name list for the trip because he hasn't recovered from his serious illness.

Hence, I was ordered to go.

What's wrong?

It's just that the name list for the trip was revised. Even I didn't know about this.

Prince Jiao revised the name list for the trip and sent it to His Majesty to review.

Naturally, you are not aware.

I don't know what you are plotting

but let me advise you, be wary of Prince Jiao.

Physician Lin, you seem to know the people in the palace very well.

The three generations of the Lin family were all physicians.

When I was three years old, I followed my father, carried needles and learned about medicines.

Even If I close my eyes, I can count out the number of nails on all the palace doors.

A pity that I'm familiar with the Royal Zhao Palace but not what's in their hearts.

People's heart are indeterminable, world moral is corrupted.

but I believe if there's a companion on the trip, the journey won't be lonely.

Are you referring to me or Lu Buwei?

In this world, you should only trust one person.

That's yourself.

I was tricked and also fell into traps

but someone saved me countless of times from despair.

This time, I will trust him.

- Reporting! - What's wrong?

Found Wei Soldiers ahead on their way to Handang.

What are they doing here too?

Let's go now.

The Crown Prince of Chu state is in front.

He's also here to propose marriage?

Go after them!

Hurry up!

Quick!

Speed up!

Hurry up! Speed up again!

Go after them! Catch up with them!

Quick! After them!

Hurry up!

Quick! Speed up!

Speed up again!

Stop him!

Quick!

Quick!

What's wrong, Envoy of Wei state?

Is a tiger after you?

You are too shameless.

Let's go.

[ Qianyuan Palace ]

[ Fengming Palace ]

I saw the preparations for the ritual ceremony.

Every aspect has been attended to.

It's fortunately due to the Empress.

Frankly, Haolan did a lot for this ritual ceremony.

Your Majesty should reward her heavily.

Do you still need to say this?

Greetings, Royal Father.

- Jiao'er. - Mother.

You are anxious. What's the urgency?

The envoy of Wei state and the Crown Prince of Chu state arrived at Mount Mafu at the same time.

They are already here?

That's good then. Excellent.

I was even worried that the kings of Wei state and Chu state wouldn't send help.

Seems like I worried too much.

It's good that they are here.

This is not right.

Based on Zhao state's propriety, it should be the envoy of We state who should be at Handan.

What is he doing here instead?

Speak.

Both states have the same intention to seek a marriage alliance with Ya'er.

What did you say?

Your son don't dare to lie, both groups are at bottom of the mountain, ready to fight.

I sent an envoy to discuss a marriage alliance with them?

What's going on?

Jiao'er, did you investigate clearly?

If the three states, Zhao, Wei, Chu establish ties, will be disadvantageous to Qin.

I suspect the spy of Qin state sabotaged

and deliberately announced the beauty and reputation of Ya'er to Wei and Chu states

Spurring them into fighting each other. Qin will enjoy the result of it.

How evil.

You can't go in, Crown Prince of Chu state!

I'm Xiongwan, the Crown Prince of Chu state.

Greetings, Your Majesty, Your Highness.

Who are you?

So you are the prince of Chu.

You look handsome as well as dignified.

Thank you for the compliment, your Highness.

I am not worthy of such estimation.

Prince came in such haste, it's my fault for not preparing better.

or my attendants didn't serve you well?

- I will go now. - Prince, there's no need to.

I am here for one reason.

What would that be?

However urgent your purpose may be, you cannot force yourself into the palace without the appropriate official notice.

I am sorry for my impertinence,

but I would like your Majesty to take a look at this painting.

Isn't that Ya'er?

Where did you get that painting?

Prince, why are you interrogating me instead?

This is the most precious gift from your envoy.

My impression of the beautiful princess of Zhao state

was love at first sight.

I travelled tirelessly these days to come here wanting to propose for marriage.

But before I enter,

I saw the official envoy from Wei state

holding the same painting as mine.

I'm boldly asking the King of Zhao state,

what's going on?

Come here.

What's going on?

Ya'er's painting,

how could it be mixed up with the gifts?

Royal Father. In the gift items,

the painting was definitely not there.

Someone must have sabotaged it.

- Then... - Royal Father, please trust me.

I was too trustful of you.

That's why it became a laughing matter.

Crown Prince of Chu, since my envoy made a mistake,

why don't we regard that painting as another gift? What do you think?

There's no harm. No harm.

I merely want to ask whether the woman in the painting is Princess Ya or not.

- Yes! - It's great that it's her.

My trip is not in vain then.

I'm here with the intent to discuss about the alliance between our two states.

Let my Chu state be an ally as well as be binded eternally with the Zhao state.

- Then... - Crown Prince of Chu.

Ya'er is my only daughter.

Naturally can not rush with her marriage.

Of course, we need someone to check the fortunes and destinies

before it can be confirmed.

Since I dare to come here, I have already gotten someone to check our fates.

This is a blessing of heaven.

But since Your Highness is worried,

I will wait for another two days.

I believe the king and queen of Zhao state

will definitely give the Chu state a satisfactory answer.

I'm taking my leave first.

He's so impolite.

How could I let the princess marry him?

Your Majesty, we still have time to plan.

[ Fengwu Palace ]

Subtitles brought to you by The Scintillating Team @ Viki.com

Princess Ya is indeed beautiful like a fairy.

You look a hundred times better than your painting.

Where did this lunatic come from? He even dare to be so impolite.

Arrogant lunatic! I think that this is a critical situation

but this Crown Prince is too crazy.

We must not let Ya'er know about this.

Royal Father.

What are you hiding from me again?

Hide? N-othing.

You heard everything?

It's like this. You speak instead.

Wei and Chu states are here to seek a marriage alliance with you.

I wonder what's your opinion.

I'm not marrying.

To strengthen the nation in a crucial time, marriage is of utmost importance, and so is the reinforcement of national relations with an alliance.

As a princess of the state, how can you go against convention by not marrying?

My life was a gift from my parents. But once I was born, I should not be controlled by others.

The both of you want to marry me off.

Fine. Just carry my corpse there.

I...I don't agree too.

[ Qingyang Palace ]

Princess.

Yiren.

Princess, what happened?

The Grand Army of Chu, who's seeking marriage alliance with me,

is already here at the base of Mount Mafu.

Is this true?

Yiren, what do you have to say about this?

As a Qin person, I won't say much

but since you are asking, I will answer you.

Many generations of prestigious class, use marriage ties to help one another.

Nowadays, Zhao is in trouble, asking Wei for help.

Taking advantage of their strength, the other party requests marriage to cement the alliance.

Frankly, it's natural and logical.

If the Princess is willing to marry him, this can resolve the problem of the Zhao state.

Royal Descendant, is that all you want to say to me?

What else does the Princess want me to say?

Since you have nothing else to say, let me speak then.

The man in Zhao state are all the same.

They want to use me as a sacrifice in exchange for peace in the nation.

Let me be bold to ask a question.

War is provoked by men.

Yet the weaker women have to shoulder the responsibility of revenge and bloodshed.

This looks like men are extremely weak and laughable!

Princess, as a child of the Royal family,

everyone has their responsibilities and duties.

Ever since you were young, you lived in luxury and commanding others.

It's because of the support from citizens.

Now they are in need, you've never rejected the enjoyment.

Then you should not reject this kind of sacrifice.

Kings lead the citizens.

Officials take care of court matters. Generals lead armies into battles.

If everyone carry out their responsibilities and duties, the nation should be stable and peaceful.

Why is there a need to sacrifice a woman's happiness to protect the alliance?

The responsibilities that all of you are unable to upkeep but I have to.

Is this fair?

Princess, those statements are erroneous.

I don't dare to speak carelessly about Kings.

Even old General Lin has 200,000 soldiers of Zhao state.

They are in the front lines spilling blood to protect the land.

Can you see their sacrifices?

These men are fighting in the battle field.

The planting and harvesting are done by the weak, old and women.

in order to supply money and provision for the front line.

Can you see what they have done?

Princess looks at the mirror every day.

Naturally, you can't see the sufferings of the people.

But His Majesty could see that.

This is the reason for his pile of worries.

Matters are such, Princess should not only focus on private love relations

and shouldn't even come here to involve the Royal Descendant.

Or else, you will only bring disaster to him with his death.

Brother Lu, what are you laughing at?

This princess of Zhao state

She does have piece of bravery. I can't help but admit to it.

Princess's position is prestigious.

Also unrivaled beauty.

The portrait only showed ten percent of her beauty.

Yet it could lure the ruler of Wei state and the Crown Prince of Chu state.

And to go after her like a flock of ducks.

Willing to buy one smile from her with ten thousand golds (to gain her fancy).

Royal Descendant caused the princess to shed many tears.

I look at this in utter daze and envy.

Envious? Then let me give this good fortune in love to Brother Lu.

No, don't. The princess is very passionate.

I wouldn't be able to take it.

Then, in the future, please stop using us to crack jokes.

But the painting that you just mentioned,

what's going on with that?

I just heard that someone sent two paintings to Wei and Chu states, separately.

The Envoy of Wei and the Prince of Chu came together to Zhao state to propose marriage.

Isn't this very strange?

It's because I changed my mind.

If both Wei and Chu states propose the marriage alliance,

the Qin army will definitely retreat.

Our business of transacting sales and purchases won't be successful.

Lu Buwei, you are simply...

Why are you surprised? I'm a businessman.

Naturally, benefit is more important to me.

But don't forget, I'm from the Zhao state.

Haolan, without businessmen like us who transact sales and purchases,

will there be peace in the kingdom?

Why don't you think of this?

Qin state attacked Han state for four years.

Just as we are about to take down Shangdan.

Han State gave Shangdan's seventeen cities to Zhao King.

Intended goal is bring this chaos to Zhao State.

The Zhao King was greedy for the profits of those cities.

He accept the gift without blinking at all.

That created this conflict for Zhao State.

Qin State gearing to fight Han, took over Shangdan and Taihan Mountain.

Ultimately, it was still to attack and obtain Zhao state.

Zhao King accepting Shangdan only merely gave Qin the excuse to attack.

If the king of Zhao state declined, Qin and Zhao states will still eventually be at war.

Look at this.

War can't be avoided.

We are so little, how can sway the big situation.

On the other hand, Shangdan now have so many refugees.

Zhao State can not keep with military provisions.

Even more so, to support them.

Without evil merchants like us

they would have already starved to death.

Fallacy!

Haolan, people must work with the currents, in order to succeed with grandeur.

Be sure to remember, don't be kind like a woman.

Then let me tell you.

Zhao King is delaying the Chu & Wei matter til after the food sacrificial ceremony.

It's too late.

The Crown Prince of Chu brought 3,000 soldiers.

Wei Guards are also in full military armor.

Do you think they are merely here to seek a marriage alliance?

Is the alliance false?

Seems like you really don't understand the imperial court.

The alliance is real.

Marrying the princess is also real.

But if the king of Zhao state doesn't resolve this soon,

How do you know this attempt for alliance will not turn into looting in a burning house?

Older sister Haolan, what's on your mind?

Ah Yue, Lu Buwei gifted the painting to Chu state.

is really only to create internal chaos in the three states?

Tell me.

I don't understand.

I fear it's not that simple.

Greetings, Your Highness.

Your Highness, Princess Ya had been on hunger strike for three days now.

You are the best physician in the palace. Why couldn't you cure her?

I'm a doctor. I can treat physical illnesses and not psychological illnesses.

Princess, you should eat something.

I'm not eating!

Do you think that by lying in bed and refusing food,

you will be able to avoid the marriage?

Declining food, being sick.

As long as I want to, can solve this conflict.

That Crown Prince of Chu state

is not a fool.

King Chu is currently sick, he can escape back to Chu state.

and will immediately take over the throne.

How can he be a simple person?

They brought a renowned physician.

Any illnesses can be cured.

I will destroy my face then!

Mother, what are you laughing at?

Look at this beautiful face.

Once you destroyed it,

That Chu princess is young and virile.

He will definitely not marry you

but it's different for the king of Wei state.

He is here only for the alliance.

I only need to give more beautiful consorts.

Marry off together.

The king of Wei state wouldn't mind.

If I don't permit you to cry,

There are currently several thousands of soldiers from both Wei and Chu States.

Using alliance as an excuse at bottom of the Mt. Mafu.

The person who should cry is the Liang Po who is holding onto Changping.

And those soldiers readying to enter battle frontlines.

Also the helpless Zhao citizens .

You, as the princess of a state,

your people will be able to see it.

How will you be able to cry?

Mother, can current the circumstances really be resolved by a marriage alliance?

The soldiers at the frontline are waiting for the two State's reinforcements.

Among the three states, the happiest will be the people of Qin.

Your Highness, may I be bold?

There is a method we can try.

I asked Royal Descendant what I should do.

He said that marriage alliance is the responsibility of the princess.

Li Haolan, what do you think?

I'm asking you a question. Why aren't you answering?

Princess has a mind of your own.

You don't need an answer from me.

My elder brothers and I are all father King's biological children.

When they are riding and shooting arrows. I was housed to learn instruments and paintings.

When they are hunting and playing, I had to repeatedly learn protocols and etiquettes.

They traveled everywhere. I don't even know what's going on out there.

Both got to enjoy the luxury. But now at this time.

it became solely my responsibility. Who gave them the rights?

Just because of this female body of mine.

Princess, you are not happy?

Of course, I'm not.

They decided my past and my future too.

Did you see, all those sharp eyes piercing at me like poisonous snakes?

Wanting to use my flesh and blood.

To make up for their stupidity and mistakes.

Just because I'm a woman, I must conform to their rules

and accept everything that's unfair in this kingdom.

Of course, I'm not happy.

I can see sympathies and understanding in your eyes.

This is the first time we established a commonality, correct?

Yes, this is the first time I understand how you feel.

But this understanding is establish on top of your suffering.

Princess, I want to help you from the inside my heart.

That is not because Zhao State but also because we are both females.

I can clearly understand the pain.

Every time a country mires in war,

it is the beginning of a woman's troubles.

To prevent war, they requested marriage alliance.

If marriage fails, the city will be destroyed.

Their soldiers will rampantly stampede this land.

And women will also become battle trophies.

Therefore, Princess, in order to dignity and freedom.

you need to depend on yourself.

What Haolan just said, Princess need to remember carefully.

You want true affections, but I don't have any.

Princess, imagine this.

Royal Descendant Qin is standing in front of you.

Princess don't realize the loving gaze you have for Royal Descendants.

If you have show a little bit of that today, will have twenty percent chance to succeed.

Only twenty percent?

Yes, only twenty percent.

You dare to let me try for only twenty percent.

This is the only chance.

If it fails, it will be the dire end, no more additional chance of survival.

Isn't that so?

Yes.

Li Haolan, I will trust you for this round.
