[ej] oh, I think we got the little thieving bastard.
Oh, I gotta tell the boys.
-Boys! -[max] yeah?
-[ej] get out here. Bring the gator spear. -What? We have a gator?
-[max whooping] -I think the line--
-[max screams] -dude, I think the line's caught, I'm not sure.
[ej] it might be the hyacinth, but we gotta check.
[gary] the hyacinth could've just pulled it. We can't get our hopes up,
-but also, getting through all that on a raft. -[max] yeah.
-We have a clear shot. -It's pretty cold.
-I mean, I'm willing to swim. -[max] I'm willing to swim.
[gary] here we are, we're discussing how we're gonna do this, right?
And ej can't go across, he has stitches in his balls.
So, we're like...
It's down to max and I.
[ej] I hope there's something on there.
Good luck, boys. Be safe.
[gary] there's absolutely nothing safe
about what we're about to go do right now.
This water was actually teeming with gators.
But if there's a gator on that line,
that pushes us to a vital point to make it through this challenge.
[ej] go get it, boys.
Whoo! It's a pool of...
-Ej, watch our backs, man. -I got yous, man. I got yous. I'm looking.
Watching for hyacinth moving.
That would indicate a gator kinda going towards the boys.
It's very important in situations like this, you do have a spotter.
All's quiet right now, boys. Looking good.
-Whoa, whoa, boys. -[gary] what?
-Gator 25 yards. -Oh, *bleep*.
Get moving. He went under, I can't see him no more.
Go, go, go!
Keep moving, keep moving.
[gary] watch out for water moccasins.
Yeah, it's definitely tight.
Let's get on the same side here.
-Here's the line. Get over on this side. -Where's the line? Hold on.
All right, boys, steady she goes.
[gary] oh, wait. Scoot back. Scoot back.
Something's heavy on the line though for sure.
-Oh, he's moving. Something's moving. -[max] oh, there's bubbles.
-[gary] oh, dude. -[ej] what've you got?
-Like a six footer, dude. -Yeah.
-[max] wait, now you get the hyacinth. -You go out to the right?
-[max] get the hyacinth off of him. -Yeah.
I don't wanna break this line. He's in the mud now.
-[max] I see him. I see him. -Okay, dude. We gotta hit him on the head.
I know. Bring him out. Bring him out.
I got him, I got him.
-Here, you want this, brother? -[max] yeah, yeah.
-[ej] wack him. -[max] bring him in.
-[gary] hey, watch out for the lunge. -Bring him in.
[gary] the gators can't be underestimated in their territory.
Sometimes when you go to get him, they'll lunge.
And they lunge fast.
I don't want it to break. I don't want it to break. I'm getting its attention--
-keep going. Keep going. -No, he's planted in the mud. Give him a whack.
-[ej] yeah! -[gary] another one.
Get him, max. Yeah!
[both celebrate]
*bleep* love you, brother.
[both scream]
-we're eating, boys. -[max] just what we want, baby.
-Ej, comes through. -Yeah.
-Ej! -Get him, boys. Get him, boys.
The boys swam over, pulled on the line, what do you know?
Ltb. Little thieving bastard's on the other end of it.
Oh, yeah. Pretty boy.
[ej] nice. That thing is as big as you.
[gary laughs] yeah.
[ej] max went over there and gave a good whack with the plasty.
Needed to do it twice. That's how tough this little bugger was.
Ah, ha-ha. Nice.
And now, we got gator for lunch.
We're gonna be eating for days off this sucker.
-Blessed brother. Thank you. -Thank you.
Thank you for your sacrifice.
But you shouldn't have been stealing my damn fish.
โช gonna butcher up a lot of meat โช
โช oh, ho, ho that's real sweet โช
-here's the broadhead. -Thank you, sir.
You know, sometimes the hunt is the glorious thing when you get the kill,
but it's actually kind of the easiest thing.
The real difficulty comes in processing.
Protecting your meat, meat management.
We're almost ready to start cooking some stuff, gary.
-I got the head right here with the organs in the mouth. -[ej] cool.
-Let's start boiling first and then we'll get to the smoking. -Yeah.
[ej] I'm waiting for this kill right here.
To get that pesky gator off of my fish line and into my belly.
That's a win today. It's a win for me, a victory.
This is the first gator I'll be having out here and I'm really excited,
'cause the boys have been having quite a menu of food.
And now I get to taste a little bit of what they've been eaten.
And, man, is it gonna be good.
That's all the meat that will fit in that pot.
It's a chewy part. Don't know if that's a bone or not.
Bite, bite, bite. Wait. Is it firm?
Or you want a different part? Here.
Mmm.
This is a huge move to take us past 60 days.
Oh, man. Dudes. Dudes.
That's magnificent. That is amazing.
Mmm, dude.
I can't tell you how good that damn tastes.
I've been dying to taste that since I got here.
-And now I have. -Yeah.
That's amazing.
[max] this is brought us together as a team.
This is brought up morale,
and I just feel the protein just hitting my veins.
I feel freaking jacked up right now.
I feel like I could probably run a marathon.
I'm very grateful for our team.
-Dude, get in there. -Let's go.
-Gator *bleep*. -Gator boys.
-Let's go. -Oh, yeah.
[narrator] to the south, jeff and steven are still in search of high ground.
Later, camp. Later, demon bear.
[narrator] after two brutal days on the bayou.
[jeff] the raft is holding steady,
that's pretty much saving grace here.
Ah, man, my shoulder's on fire.
[grunts]
[steven] it's peak hot part of the day right now.
[jeff] dude, I'm cooking. Cooking.
My shoulder's killing me right now.
I'm beat, bro. *bleep* beat.
Wish the current would work with us for like two *bleep* seconds.
Yeah, I know. We've been going against current all damn day.
Steven and I are going to make 60 days.
Seeing our partnership, seeing our positivity,
we now have what it takes to make it to the end.
God!
I'd totally punch a baby for a pizza. Right.
And the baby's not even gonna remember it.
But I would remember that pizza.
[narrator] to the north, team savage's ambitious bridge project...
-All right. -Yeah.
-Great job, guys. -Whoo!
[narrator] ...Has opened up a new world of resources.
[man] look at the body, moving, it's moving.
Nutrient number two.
-Yeah. -Good job, rylie.
[narrator] but the return of a mysterious stomach issue...
-[rylie coughs, vomits] -[man] she's getting rid of everything.
[narrator] ...Has rylie on the ropes once again.
I will be damned if I let something like this
take me out of this challenge.
-Whoo. -You look like a queen of the bayou on that.
-Holding your gator medallion. -Queen of the bayou.
-All my peasants. Zero. -Zero peasants.
[rylie] I'm finally feeling a little better.
Um, my stomach is almost 100%.
Um, and I'm feeling much, much more energy.
So, feeling like I have this strength returned to me
and some energy, I can have some optimism and feel better.
I don't wanna use the bait if the fish aren't doing too much.
They're jumping out there, not over here.
We need to get it right on the other side of here.
Sneak it like...
I saw a couple of little mullet.
Like something swimming by. Like bigger ones.
When you're out here with nothing,
you really have to become in tune with your environment more than ever before.
We're team savage, we have established such a perfect working order
that is very subtle to this environment,
that we literally communicate without talking sometimes.
We're truly thriving at this point.
We are living out here.
I feel like there's nothing that's really gonna stop and get in our way.
I've got this beautiful sunset behind me to finish the day.
You know, just looking around appreciating stillness.
[jeff] feels like *bleep* stretch.
[steven] yeah, it does.
We've been doing all damn day.
I'm beat, bro. I can't believe we have to put a shelter together.
Tonight might just be a fire wood, sit on the ground type of night.
-Let's dock right here. -Right here.
-Yeah, sun's going down. -Yeah, dude.
We're running out of daylight.
Drag us up here.
[steven] tie this to that and tie it to the tree.
All right, dude.
Do you smell smoke, man?
[jeff] that smells like smoke.
Look, there's a shelter up there.
Oh, that's a shelter, bro.
-I see people, baby. -Yeah.
-Is anybody home? -[matt speaking]
no *bleep* way.
-Oh. -Are there people here?
[both] there's people here.
-[steven] what? -Oh, man.
Jeff and steven, you know, the loudest two survivalist on any challenge.
-[jeff] yeah. -What!
There's more people.
We're just gonna have to deal with that.
-What? -[matt] jeff and steven!
-Oh, man. -[rylie] oh, my god!
Look at all these people.
[rylie] I think, why are my teammates screaming at each other?
Because they're kind of a soft spoke and bunch.
We don't really do a lot of yelling.
[screams] oh!
Two wild cards walking up, and it's just like, what is going to happen now?
-Yeah. -[steven] what's up?
-Holy! -[steven] oh, my god!
Is anybody home?
-Oh, man. -There's more people.
It's one of the most beautiful things that I've seen in a long time.
-What's happening? -Hey!
-Look at this, they've got a sidewalk. -What?
Their voice was one 100% detectable,
and immediately I knew that jeff and steven were coming into camp.
[steven] we've had a journey.
[indistinct chatter]
[rylie] it's a little bit like worrisome.
Like, what is their social dynamic?
I mean, what are they bringing to us into our little corner of the swamp,
which is super peaceful and super successful.
Tonight, our house is your house.
-I feel terrible. -We were like, man we don't wanna go there.
-Firewood and stuff. -You guys are naked family.
-You gotta come spend the night. -We could squeeze in.
-We'll squeeze in. -We were gonna light a tree on fire.
-Yeah. -Yeah.
-Let's get warm. -House is your for tonight for sure.
-Come on in. -Thank you, guys.
[jeff] I see a couple of gator skulls,
I see a nutria pelt, team savage,
and I think we're gonna fit in very, very well here.
[rylie] so we're all in here. We're all very cozy.
And, uh, obviously, we would never, ever tell our guests to sleep outside.
So we're gonna be cuddling, snug as a bug,
and that the adventures have just begun.
I have so much respect for all three of these people.
What a blessing. It has been a long 48 hours.
Uh, we're exhausted. They got an incredible place.
It just feels so good to be here
-with our naked family, man. -Glad you guys made it in.
[ej speaking]
big victory today.
This gator, man, taste so good going down.
I've been needing something else to eat other than fish and snakes.
Something more substantial. Today we got it.
Proud of the kill. Proud to have you on my team.
Glad to be part of the team.
-[gary] for sure. -We work so well together.
-[gary] oh, god, yeah. -Like a machine.
[ej] ever since the boys got here, we bonded.
And we've become very, very successful.
And that means long term survival 60 days.
[grunts] I love it.
Just with the sun coming up. Start your day off, right.
You know, it'll be a good day.
When I get a substantial meal in my stomach, I feel like a million bucks.
I can feel the protein run through my veins.
I've got a surge of energy.
Like nine days into these frickin stitches, I feel renewed.
[gary] I feel amazing.
I'm not taking it for granted, I'm still humble.
Don't know if I'll finish this challenge,
but it looks promising is what I'll say.
[ej] so I'm slicing up the jerkies, I'm working on some tail fat.
We need this guy to get us at least to day 40.
If not day 45.
All right. Smoke operation in effect.
So the weather has been warm in the last couple of days,
so we're processing as fast as possible so it won't go bad.
[narrator] raw or undercooked alligator meat contains numerous dangers,
including tongue worm.
A blood sucking parasite that attacks the eyes, nose and throat of humans,
causing intense flu like symptoms.
I wanna get the eyes and the brains,
because the brains are rich in omega fatties,
and, uh, the eyes have zinc in them.
And likely salt.
Don't waste anything.
Waste not, want no, consume as little as possible.
Don't let anything go to waste.
Oh!
-Oh, my god, dude. -Dude.
Breakfast of champions.
-[speaking] -it's all right, man.
-Want some grilled gator? -I'm good.
Oh, yeah.
Daddy' gonna eat good tonight.
[gary] hey, guys, have you seen my contacts?
Oh, my god!
-Have you see my contacts, ej? -No, gary.
You know you know that gator,
I'm starting to feel a little bit like I'm turning into one.
[ej laughs]
little too much gator for me, maybe.
I should maybe back off a little bit.
I'm starting to have eyes for only gator.
Wink.
[matt] it was the first night joining up with jeff and steven.
It was a tight, tight time in the shelter.
It's obvious that it's a bit cramped in here.
If our place was a little bigger, you know, we could all fit.
But it's just, you know, just not big enough, so...
Thank you for taking us in last night.
And we are sorry, we arrived so late.
Yeah.
But steven and I were talking,
and depending on what you guys see...
What do you think about putting a shelter right next door?
-Yeah -feel free.
Cool.
Team savage, we have no egos.
We don't have these...
These, you know--
big chips on our shoulder.
Our doors are always open.
And we're wanting to help others along the way.
But I'll tell you what,
looking back onto jeff's last big challenge...
You know, with his 60 days in the philippines
you know, jeff was very, like, arrogant and selfish
the way he treated, not just rylie, but the others
yes!
-It's like, that is chicken skin. -I know.
-[jeff exclaims] I'm gonna get fat! -[woman] hell, yeah!
[jeff speaking]
-yes! -[rylie speaking]
[all exclaiming]
people know me as the "neighbors, not roommates" guy.
-This challenge is... -[rylie exclaiming]
but, to be fair, in the past, I have done that
because there's always been somebody that's just thought,
-"oh, I can get by just tending the fire." -[steven] or getting water.
You know, "I'll have other people supporting me."
I know that I was not someone that sat around, loafing.
I don't need to confront jeff
for some comments or mindsets that he's had.
And there were many.
[jeff] we are not here to go pig about.
Naked and afraid xl is not a welfare program.
If people cannot get their own food,
then you should not be out here.
[rylie] it's not something that sits well with me.
Well, you know, I know--
nobody likes a fisherman that fishes in another fisherman's pond.
So, we know those rules and stuff.
Uh, just make sure to tell us if there's spots that you don't want us to go,
of if you've got stuff, 'cause we're gonna mess up
your-- your gig or your vibe.
Team savage, we all fit. We all make sense.
I love our dynamic
and I think, also, that's why we're all
a little bit hesitant, you know,
about merging with any other people.
Because we have such a great dynamic,
it's just like... We don't wanna mess it up!
Yeah, we're-- we're clearly two strong groups
that just came together.
And I think we should probably, um,
join resources and share big wins.
But, I mean, if one of us catches a 13-inch fish or something
keep it to that group.
Because then-- then-- then there's no point.
You know, 60 days. It's still long ways out.
While you're out here, your true colors shine.
There may be a little cockiness,
and there may be a lot of butting heads.
Cheers.
-Cheers. -[chuckling]
[max] how's that liver, gary?
-It's like a pate almost. -[max] yeah. That's what I thought.
[gary] I would say my spirit animal,
that I relate to most, I used to say it was a mountain lion.
Because I'm agile and a bit of a loner.
But the true animal spirit of mine...
It's creamy inside.
...Seems to be more along the lines of the hyena.
I can't deny that.
Because I'm a scavenger.
[ej] there's gary right there. What are you doing, gary?
[chuckles]
oh, just, you know...
Cutting up some tongue right now.
[ej] oh, god. Don't look at that, kids.
Uh, I have a concern for gary in terms of...
You study these strange things,
sometimes strange things can happen.
[gary] so, I'm gonna cook these eyeballs up, guys.
-And the brains. Yeah. -[max] oh, yeah?
[ej] you never know what this animal may have had.
Parasites... Could have had some kind of a disease.
When you start pushing the envelope like that,
you can get yourself in trouble.
-Oh, man! -*bleep*
I'm a... A cautious eater out in the wild.
I do eat just about anything.
This is a gator testicle.
-You want this to replace yours? -No, mine are fine.
But there's just some things I'm just not gonna cross the table.
-[exclaiming] -*bleep*
[ej] gary is straight up-- we know who we're working with.
[laughing]
it's like watching a car accident.
You know, you can see it's about to happen
but you can't look away.
Delicioso.
[gibbering in baby voice]
hey, bud, just in time.
-What's up? -Wanna help me l--
-wanna help me lash? -Yep.
Steven and I, we're gonna build our own shelter.
We brought a pop-up tent shelter with us
by cannibalizing our last location.
So we have all the materials we need to put up a quick shelter.
We're doing that because they really have
a shelter kinda built for three people right now.
-We literally have a house kit, right here. -We do.
I mean, we would have been chopping the forest for two days
-just to get all these logs and all these palms... -Oh, absolutely.
-...And all these crossbeams. -Yup.
[steven] to cut down all those big timbers,
use thousands and thousands of calories.
To be able to just pick it up...
Those are things you gotta take advantage of
when you're in a survival situation like this.
-If this isn't multipurposing, I don't know what is, dude. -[laughs]
we really, really turned a shelter into a raft.
And then the raft into a shelter.
And dude, it feels good.
-Yo, team savage! -[rylie] hm?
When you guys have a minute, we could use your help
to throw the roof on this baby.
[rylie] yeah, yeah.
-All right, so this first. Ready? -[jeff] perfect.
-Assembly line, baby. -[rylie] assembly lining it!
All right?
[steven] we got our palm fronds up.
We were able to build a firewall to refract the heat back on to us.
And we literally had a home,
from raft to house in, like, two hours.
Good work, guys.
-It's awesome. -[steven] yeah, thank you, guys, for your help.
Shoot. Lickety-split.
We wanted to say thank you
-with half of our fish hooks... -What?
[rylie and matt exclaiming]
so, there's six.
-So, there's two for each of you guys. -[team savage exclaiming]
-[rylie] thanks so much, guys. -[jeff] if you need a line or anything,
just know we have plenty of line.
-Okay. -[rylie] aw...
-So come and get as much as you want. -[rylie] that's amazing.
I think jeff is probably having to eat some crow.
Because it does seem as though jeff might have changed his tune.
Jeff, do you have any interest in anything?
That you'd be willing to trade for a hook?
Yeah, we, um... Definitely are trying to hold on
to every hook we have 'cause they're limited.
[woman] so... Sorry.
We are gonna go.
-Thanks, man. Yeah. -Appreciate it.
[rylie] it seems like "teamwork is the dream work"
is the mood now.
And you know what I say? Good.
That's what it should be.
-That's like the five-minute shelter build-off right there. -[jeff] dude, right?
-From raft to home in... We might sell it on amazon. -Wow, dude.
Yeah, we might just ship it out in crates.
Hi, I'm about to set up my third nutria snare.
I know where these nutria are roaming.
I mean, there are pathways, by the hundreds.
So, this is nutria game path highway.
Inevitable that nutria are traveling this thing,
every single day.
It's been two days since I spring snared the second nutria.
I've been lucky with only setting two snares.
So, maybe I'll get lucky again.
There might be a third nutria tomorrow.
You just never know what the day will bring, out here,
in the atchafalaya basin.
Perfect.
We have a shelter, we know we're gonna have a roof over our heads.
So, this afternoon, I'm setting fishing hooks
while steven's setting up the alligator hooks.
[whispers] that's pretty great.
Boom.
[jeff] I have two different lines,
separated by about 75 yards.
Each fishing line has two hooks on it.
Uh... We're set, baby.
That's a great, great placement.
Great placement.
[owl hooting]
[owl hooting]
it's the evening of night 36.
Wow.
That sounds like a lot of days.
And today was a busy day.
Today was our first full day, uh, with team savage.
And, uh, I mean, we're a team. We're a team,
although we're staying in two separate shelters.
And we're getting along great, which is fantastic.
I was reflecting how I performed well last night.
-[steven] it did. It did. -Stayed really warm.
[jeff] steven and I have spent really the last week
building a raft, travelling for two days,
spending a night at creepy camp.
We haven't had time to focus on food
because we've been travelling so many miles.
Yeah. Fishing today.
I'm gonna go and collect, buddy.
This morning, my first task is to check my fishing lines.
And I'm confident that I could have something.
Today, I am up bright and early.
I am determined to have a bountiful day,
and I'm going to fish for my family today.
Ready a fishing pole, brand-new hook.
We're gonna give it a whirl.
[jeff] oh! Fish on, baby!
Oh! Look at that gar.
-[matt] look at that gar. -[jeff] it's a gar, baby.
-Look at that. -[matt laughing]
-[jeff exclaims] yeah! -[matt] I couldn't hear you. What?
-What? I couldn't hear you. -Yes!
-[all laugh] -[matt] did you say--
this is what we live for!
-[matt] did you say you got a fish? -[jeff exclaims]
jeez, I could barely even notice he got one.
[jeff] yeah!
Look at the teeth on that one.
[exclaims] oh, yeah.
[exclaims]
[matt] I think that's his new phrase.
"this is what we live for."
-that's the new hashtag. -[ryan] I guess.
Jeff could be catching a guppy or a huge 500-pound fish,
his scream and his reaction is the same.
[exclaims] today is a good day. [screams]
[laughs]
*bleep*
I like to be out here to have fun. Everybody knows me.
I like to yell and scream and celebrate my successes.
[jeff screaming] look at that baby.
-That's a meal right there. -[jeff] hell yeah, it is.
[steven] hell yeah, dude.
-Awesome, brother. -Thank you, man.
-[steven] that was good. -Thank you.
[steven] get the fire ready.
[gary groans]
[gary groans]
[ej speaks]
[gary speaks]
-[ej speaks] -[gary groans]
-[ej speaks] -[gary] I feel like I'm a sick man now.
[ej speaks]
-I know. -[ej speaks]
I'm gonna have to...
-[ej] huh? -I'm gonna have to puke.
-[ej] really? -[gary] yeah.
Bad.
I just got indigestion.
[ej] are you sure?
I said it before. An injury or an illness could take out any of us.
[groans]
[gary speaks]
[ej speaks]
[gary coughing, vomiting]
[gary groans]
-[ej] you okay, brother? -[gary groans]
okay, boys, gotta slow down all this gator eating.
Especially when you haven't eaten that much for a long time.
'cause I went off tonight
and I ate way too much.
I think I need to take my own advice.
Consume as little as possible.
-Holy *bleep*. -[ej laughing]
[rylie] looks like we have a puddle to fish in.
[ryan] I know.
It's the first time we've seen it completely choked up.
[rylie] yeah.
This is pretty bad.
[matt] we're up early, getting things accomplished.
Ryan's out cleaning some spots for a fishing ground.
This hyacinth has moved in with the wind.
So, right now, we've got to clear a little area
so we can fish a little easier off the bridge.
It's day 38.
Uh, woke up this morning to a river full of lilies.
You can see that. Check that out.
One thing I got to do with all these lilies in the water.
They kind of dragged my gator bait around.
So, I'm gonna have to replace my lines.
So that's part of the routine out here in the bayou.
Down at that far one, is there any room to cast
or is it all lilies there too?
[steven] um, there might be some, like, couple spots.
I mean, it's pretty saturated right now.
-[rylie] you got a fish on? -[ryan] maybe.
[rylie] go, go, go, go, guys.
-[matt] see the barb wire? -[ryan] no, I don't.
[matt] it might be under water, I bet you. Pull on that slack.
-Oh, yep. He's on there. He's on there. -[rylie] take it.
[matt] he's on there. Get him.
Get his butt.
-[ryan] still going? -Just pull. Pull under that slack with the left hand.
Et him, buddy. Get him.
-[ryan] getting him. -[rylie] he's hooked.
-[matt] pull it, pull it, pull it. -[rylie] get him to shore.
[matt] oh, *bleep* yeah.
I'm so glad I left that thing in.
Those hooks that were given to us by jeff and steven
paid its dividends immensely.
-Nice. -[rylie] oh, yeah, guys.
-Nice work. -Yes!
[rylie] teamwork, guys.
Teamwork.
Ooh. Got something on here.
Yes! Yes!
Just finished cleaning this monstrous bowfin.
[jeff] yes!
-And-- -[jeff] yes!
[jeff screaming]
and there goes all the other animals in the area.
[jeff screaming] oh, my gosh!
[laughs] look at this thing.
Is he all right?
-[jeff] oh, this is sweet! -Is someone attacking him?
-[jeff continues screaming] -quick, send help.
If that fish isn't five times bigger than ours, it's ridiculous.
This is freaking awesome.
A nice catfish breakfast, baby.
[ryan chuckles] breakfast.
It's like a four inch... Four incher.
I've been fishing my entire life,
and I have 33 years nearly
of, um, expertise in fishing.
And, uh... And I understand these fish.
Hey. Morning.
I got catfish breakfast.
-[steven] nice. -[jeff] yeah.
-[steven] yeah. -[jeff] yeah.
So nice.
For more in protein
[thunderclap]
[rylie] whoa, is that thunder?
-[matt] sounded like it. -[rylie] I hope it doesn't rain.
[thunder rumbling]
we got rain coming in.
Figure out what we need to do.
We may need to button down for a little bit.
Poor gary, man.
He's having something going on.
Could have indigestion.
His nose is snotty. Doesn't look real good.
[gary] my joints were killing me last night.
[groans]
feeling a little drained, dizzy, headaches, joint pain.
Feels like the beginning of getting sick.
Hey.
[ej] how you feeling?
Oh, I'm feeling a little bit like...
[groans] mildly dizzy, joint pain, mild headache.
-Really? -[gary] yeah.
I think that could be dehydration.
All the symptoms are there. Headache, dizziness...
[max] joint pain.
Yeah.
I think I'm dehydrated.
[max] I know gary. He's a tough cookie.
You know, this isn't the first time he's been...
He's been roughed up on a challenge.
Alligator fat. Delicioso.
[groans]
I'm feeling nauseous.
[max] how you feeling?
[gary groans]
oh, god. [vomiting]
you know, I think he's gonna pull himself out.
You know, we've been together the whole time.
It's just we have a brotherly bond between him and I,
and, um, I'm in good spirit he'll be just fine.
-Here. -[gary] thanks.
-[max] get outta here. -[groans]
-[max] you'll be all right. -[gary] yeah, I know. Yeah.
[groans]
[matt humming] balance.
See yours. Got it.
[matt] weather is definitely... Definitely changing right now.
[rylie] yeah, it's getting colder.
We're concerned about this weather,
so we are going to make a little shingling ridge line
so that we get a little extra protection from rain if it does come.
And if not, it can't hurt.
Okay. Those are good ones.
That's not too bad.
I don't know what our neighbors are gonna do
because they don't have a roof at all.
Our neighbors are gonna get wet, and they know...
They should know better.
I wonder what they're thinking
aha! Another gar, baby.
Nice. [laughs]
[laughs]
you want to tie them to the same side?
-You hear that? -I do.
Thinking there's no way I can have another fish.
I mean, this luck's gonna run out eventually.
Stephen and I, we are going to eat well.
-Yo, stephen? -Yeah. Yo.
You want some lunch?
-[stephen] I heard you over there. -[jeff laughs]
the bayou boys!
The amount of energy they spend screaming for each little fish,
they could have built that shelter.
It... It made that shelter a lot better.
[rylie] I wouldn't want to eat my fish in the pouring rain, but...
[matt laughs]
-[rylie] thunder. -[matt] the bayou boys are not looking good.
I think I'm gonna start breaking up a lot of this wood I drug on over.
Okay.
[steven] it's, uh, about midday.
Skies are pretty gray.
Winds popping off pretty good.
So we're gonna get some firewood, tie 'em in.
We don't have very many days left in the challenge.
We have 21, 22 days left.
That's just another naked and afraid.
So there's really no point
in expelling a ton of calories and energy
in making another huge shelter.
So we're gonna go ahead and gather firewood
and kind of closed the day up.
Should be much better.
[steven] a little worrisome because it's been so cold at night.
But, uh, we're gonna collect just a ridiculous amount of firewood,
and we're gonna bonfire the garbage out of it.
-S'up, buddy? -[matt] s'up, man?
[steven] oh, you're stealing our trees.
-[matt] you what? -[steven] stealing our trees.
[matt] taking your... Taking your stuff, man,
[matt] we've been getting most our dead wood
from farther away, knowing that possibly
you'd have to be here for, like... At the end, we're like,
"well, we'll have some left."
-we've been conserving them. -[steven] there's a bunch of them around here.
You gotta say it. Starting to get to me
[matt] a legendary challenge like this, you have to assume it's going to rain.
It's gonna rain hard and long.
Our next door neighbors here
didn't do anything to their shelter today,
which I was amazed. They didn't put one palm on, nothing.
And here, on a challenge like this,
38 days in,
that's a rookie mistake
gonna put that fish a little close to the fire
so it doesn't get all moisty.
It might rain all night tonight,
and they didn't even attempt
to make their shelter, you know, a proper waterproof winter shelter.
Put this cover over it.
Put the cover on.
[max] oh, boy.
Didn't want to caught out here in this.
And we are back to the shelter.
Phew. Ooh, that's a cold wind.
[ej] yeah, that's not good.
Getting a couple of drips on my leg here.
-Really? -Uh, I'm getting something here.
-On my head. -Nothing too crazy though.
I'll take a couple of drips.
[ej] I might put the door on now
because this is a little bit more intense.
Yeah. There it comes.
This is why I loved about it,
'cause, okay, it rains really bad,
we get a few drips, but you're not hypothermic.
Oh, yeah, we're good.
This is... This nice.
-[steven] I hate rain, man. -[jeff] I know.
[steven] I hate it.
It gives me... I get more anxiety from rain
than I ever did. Any lions or tiger sharks
-or demon bear. -[jeff] absolutely.
-[steven] or anything, dude. -[jeff] absolutely. There's uh...
There's nothing worse on the naked and afraid challenge.
[rain pattering]
[steven speaking]
steven and I, we got this baby.
And it feels so good.
[ej] and it seems like the rain might be finally letting up.
[max] yeah, dude.
[ej] how you feeling?
[gary groans] like *bleep*.
But, like, not terrible but like *bleep*.
[ej] right. Do what you've been doing. Regulate your body. Rest.
We have plenty of firewood.
[gary] yeah. [groans]
[ej] gary was not feeling well.
A little lethargic today.
We think he's dehydrated. A little dizzy.
Here to pick up the slack for him, and that's okay.
And when max came in here and past week
he's been towing most of the weight and, uh, you know,
we're all gonna have our down moments.
So we let gary to rest, and get well.
We'll get him through.
You know, that's what you do when you're on a team.
Me and max will pick it up.
[gary speaks]
[max] mmm-hmm.
[gary speaks]
[matt] it's day 39. I'm going on a hunt.
There's a fog.
It's gonna help cover my scent.
Cover my visibility as I sneak through it.
I'm gonna tip-toe my way across the bridge,
and it's some new hunting grounds. See what I can find.
See what... See what slips up through the day.
So it's a tough place to hunt.
And you know what?
That only makes it more satisfying when it happens.
Waking up to super mysterious fog
in the swamp this morning.
And it's a little chilly.
I'm a little tired.
Jeff's out checking his lines right now,
and I'm gonna check mine here in a minute.
There is no real game trails.
It's one of the toughest places I've seen
to hunt primitively.
Fish on!
Yes!
-Steven. -What's up?
Did you just say you got a fish, too?
[steven] I got a fish, too, buddy.
Oh, my gosh!
[exclaims]
*bleep*
son of a bitch.
Did you just say you got a fish, too?
[steven] I got a fish, too, buddy.
Oh, my gosh!
[exclaims]
*bleep*
son of a bitch.
-Hey, bayou brother. -Yeah, man?
-Check it out. -[exclaims]
-no way! -It's awesome, dude.
-It's awesome. -Oh, my gosh.
What a blessing, man.
[matt] I haven't seen jeff hunt one animal
on any of his challenges,
and because of that he doesn't understand,
when he yells after every little fish,
that's scaring everything further and further away.
The further I have to travel to hunt,
the harder it is to find those animals,
more calories I have to expend.
Dude, good work, man. We each got a catfish.
I know, dude! [exclaims]
[matt] it's no longer the quiet, peaceful bayou that we remember.
Now we hear the bit of a frat party happening next door.
-[laughs] -oh, my god.
How you doing, gary?
You got it, man. Whatever you need.
We'll pick it up, dude.
You did so much for me when you guys first got here, you and max both.
[coughs]
[ej] so, gary's still not feeling well.
Still fighting something. We're not sure what it is.
I'm genuinely concerned for him.
I don't know what he has,
and he's pretty to himself about it,
so I'm just gonna keep checking on him,
give him what he needs to get through it,
and hopefully with a couple days' rest and hydration,
he'll pull through.
[gary] aw, man, I feel like *bleep*.
Headaches, dizziness, joint pain.
[coughs]
I don't know what the hell I got,
but I got something.
But I have great team members.
You know? They've been checking on me.
They're being supportive of me.
So...
It's all a man could ask for when you're in this situation.
[max] opportunity walkabout.
So, we're just gonna go check the gator lines,
kind of walk the beat,
move around, kind of see what we can find.
You know, we got this big gator kill,
but that's not enough to make it 60.
There was literally four or five gators on this pond all the time.
-Really? -And nothing.
And then nothing.
So, you know, we got to start putting our foot back on the gas pedal.
A lot of trees fell down.
Yeah, seriously, there's a ton of trees down.
-Holy crap! -Whoa, look at this thing.
What the hell?
Wow.
Look what the tide brought in.
Seriously.
That's a cypress.
That looks like a cypress for sure.
Holy crap. Look at the size of this thing.
This thing's massive.
Well, we'd rather not swim across.
Yeah.
Could make this...
This is a big enough chunk of wood.
We could...
Maybe make a dugout, man.
Burn it out like the indians did.
Dude.
[narrator] dating back over a thousand years,
the chitimacha tribe traveled and fished
throughout the atchafalaya basin
on handcrafted dugout canoes.
Using primitive tools to shape and smooth large logs,
they then used slow, controlled fires
over several days to hollow out the hull.
Might be able to get two people in that,
but definitely one.
When I was in the florida ranger camp,
we had cypress all over the place,
and it's a pretty buoyant piece of wood.
[max] this could be a potential big loss
in regards to us burning a lot of calories,
but at the same time, we're set up right now.
We got that big gator kill.
We got a couple weeks' worth of food,
and I think we can reap some massive rewards
if we can get this done properly.
What do you think about we push it that way first,
we shape the hole proper,
and then we'll throw it back into its position.
Then we'll start burning it out.
Uh-huh.
Taking on this canoe project,
we'll be able to set gator lines wherever we want.
We'll be able to move in and out of all these canals.
We'll be able to fish off of it
and to create more opportunities
when it comes to resources and food for our team.
Nice.
[ej] first thing we need to do,
we're gonna go ahead and shave this thing
clean of bark.
It's got to be clean.
[grunts]
[ej] and then we're gonna start shaping it.
Got to shape the bow.
Got to make the bottom flat.
One, two, three.
[ej] then we got to get to the top side.
It's a magnificent tree,
and we're gonna make it even more magnificent
'cause we're making a dugout canoe.
-[ax thudding] -[grunting]
[exclaims]
*bleep*
[exclaims]
max stirs that young ej in me, that really competitive ej,
but, you know, I'm coming off an injury.
I got to take care of it,
but this is really helping me out.
It's making me feel young.
My balls are stitched, you said?
Really? I didn't know that.
Young guy here is telling me to take it easy.
I'm just trying to keep up with him, that's all.
[max] ej, he's the oldest guy here.
He could be my dad. You know, I look up to him.
He's showing me the ropes, handing me the torch.
And to start a project so epic
with one of the most legendary guys on this challenge
is freaking awesome.
All right, man, third morning in a row that's a catfish breakfast.
Hell yeah, dude. Little morning protein.
[grunting]
oh, yeah. Bear noises. [grunts]
dude, this is great, man.
I mean, we...
We've only been here, what, three full days...
[steven] two full days.
-[jeff] ...And we are slaughtering it. -Breakfast, dinner.
-We've eaten-- -four or five fish already.
-We've eaten every meal... -Yep.
-...For three straight days. -Yeah.
I mean, it's...
I feel like we're spending a third of our time eating.
[rylie] I think our neighbors got something,
because they were screaming all morning.
Did you see what they got?
I mean, I heard them, but...
Just two catfish on a passive line.
Every time he does it, it's like,
there goes every animal on the property.
[matt] you know, all these big game animals are running.
I walked all the way to the farthest end of this island today,
and every track was headed away from us.
It's essentially hindering survival.
We're doing everything the same,
and we're just getting zeros across the board.
When we sit down and think "what is-- what is different,"
we believe it's the fact that our neighbors
are so incredibly loud.
I just think we match up so well side by side for team savage.
-Oh, yeah. -We're all hard workers.
And we have the same agenda, and we have the same, you know...
-We do. -...Work ethic.
-We're all self-motivated... -Yeah.
-...And we all have the same goal. -Yeah.
We don't just want to make it to the end.
No, we want to kill it.
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
-Yeah, want to kill it. -Mm-hmm.
I think it's great here,
and I think, like, it's not a--
it's not an us versus you thing,
but it's like we both have our routines,
and it works.
Both teams are benefitting from the current situation.
Yes.
Our perfect, you know, patch of bayou...
[rylie] yeah.
...Has been essentially hit with a scream queen duo.
[laughter]
and I hate to say it. I love the guys.
You know, I, you know...
But you got to work in harmony.
They have a different mentality of what they're doing here.
Yeah.
[max] feeling better than you did?
[gary] no.
My headache's stronger.
I've been getting chills out there.
-You're getting chills? -Yeah.
I think, like...
Something's got to give in the next couple of days.
[narrator] due to gary's persistent symptoms,
a producer arrives to assess the situation.
Hi.
Gary, I'm having a medic come check you out to help.
Oh, no, you don't got to do that.
-Let me-- -she would like to.
Let me muscle it out.
You've all been tested for covid,
so we know it's not that.
But I'm gonna err on the side of caution.
I'm gonna have the medic come take a look at you.
-[gary] I guess. -Yeah, we're gonna do that.
[gary groans]
[max] gary's not feeling it,
and I just sort of saw him on, like, the trajectory
of kind of falling off a little bit,
which is, you know, a little disheartening
because he's been a rock star this whole time,
-and right now he's in a hard position. -[gary coughs]
he is bedridden,
and he's getting progressively worse.
-Gary. -Hi, anna.
What's going on, my darling?
Ah, I just got a little spell of the chills real quick.
-Okay. -[gary coughs]
so, you know, it kind of, like,
comes and goes here and there.
Oh, yeah.
Well, let's check for fever first.
[ej] I'm praying for gary.
I want him to stay in the challenge.
Me and max, you know, we want him to be here with us
and finish this thing.
And I just hope he gets better.
I'm concerned
'cause it seems like it goes away
and then it comes back worse.
Gary and your select dang meats, man.
You love your select meats.
I mean, you ate those lungs, and you ate the eyeballs,
and you ate a liver, right?
And I don't know if you cooked the liver all the way.
[gary] those lungs and that tongue.
Yeah.
But, you know, I took raw alligator eyeballs
and I was putting 'em in my eyes,
and so I was touching my actual eye--
[anna] with the alligator eyes?
[gary] with the alligator eyeballs.
Well, that's probably not a good idea.
[ej] gary had made a joke the other day
using the alligator eyeballs and put 'em on his eyes.
He may regret it now
because the eyeball is the one open membrane
and anything gets in there,
you can get a staph infection, you can get sick,
and you can lose your eyesight.
Your vitals are normal...
[gary] yeah.
...Which I'm very happy to see.
[gary] so, what do you think is wrong?
I think you have food poisoning.
-Oh, yeah? A little food-- -or some sort of a viral or some sort of parasite...
-Yeah. -...From food.
Really?
'cause it's been going on since...
Since the gator.
...The first day of the gator eating.
That's...
So many possibilities at the moment
of what gary might be going through.
Could be parasitic, could be viral,
could be just about anything.
It's something that his body needs to just battle.
At the moment, his vital signs are stable,
if any of those change,
that would change my treatment plan.
So at the moment it's just continuous close watch
and hope gary feels a little bit better.
[gary groans]
[gary] I'm not sure what's going on with me.
I don't know if I got a parasite from food
or [coughs] if I just have the flu.
This thing comes and goes in waves.
And I'm in a fight.
I'm in a definite fight for survival.
[groans]
-morning. -Morning, buddy.
-Happy 40. -Happy 40, man!
[ej] on a normal 40-day xl, man, we'd be on the downslope,
but I feel like I'm actually getting stronger out here.
And you know what? That's awesome.
That's not surviving.
[scoffs] thriving? That's living!
That's what we're doing.
Soup is hot.
Try the skin.
Being day 40, you know, we're going into uncharted territory.
We got freaking 20 days to go.
Two thirds of the way through the challenge
and I still have juice left.
And, you know, I want to see how far these legs can take me.
I want to see how far this...
How far this body can go.
[gary groans]
but, you know, I'm concerned about gary.
I think he's lost at least five to ten pounds
in the last three days.
How you doing, gary?
You got a couple chunks in there that are wonderful.
Here.
You know, he could have a bug.
Could be the flu. Could be anything.
We're sharing water from the same pot,
we've been eating out of the same pot,
we sleep in the same quarters,
but I'm not feeling sick.
Max hasn't.
So that leads me to start thinking
I sure hope gary's eating ways are not catching up to him.
[groans]
I feel like that lion that I saw on a nature show.
It got bit by a cobra.
It had to wander
listlessly in pain
waiting for that cobra bite to kill it or wear off.
It finally wore off, and that lion lived.
This reminds me of that lion.
[sighs]
if I make it through this,
the challenge will be a little harder for me, I think,
because...
I'll be a little more beat up.
[sighs]
little more scared, a little more apprehensive.
The smallest little thing can take you down.
I'm not tapping out.
[ryan] morning day 40.
Ah, this is a huge landmark,
being the end of a normal 40-day challenge,
which everyone here has completed except for myself
until today.
So I can join the ranks of the 40-day survivalists,
which very few people have done up to this point.
So we got 20 more to go,
and we still got some big game to harvest.
Oh, heck, yeah, put a little notch in her.
Yeah. Yeah.
This is for making a real solid spear
with the neck knife arrows that we got.
Yep.
Find something in a den. That ought to keep it...
That ought to keep it entertained.
[ryan] I'm going to spend my day
with the intention of finding a nutria den.
This morning I noticed walking, it's a--
there's no... No sign within this large bubble now around us.
-No. -And it's a--
so now things have been pushed
further and further outside that bubble.
-Yeah. -So...
I'll have to go to them.
You know, ryan was able to catch these nutria
just literally, like, less than a hundred yards from camp.
And these nutria have been a huge source of our protein.
As soon as jeff and steven came in and they start screaming
for these little fish they're catching,
and ryan is having to go further and further
into the brush which puts him into danger,
and add more calories expended.
I mean, I'm five foot 11,
it's about a six and a half foot spear,
with that spear tip on, it's about a seven foot spear.
With a deadly arrowhead, broadhead, so.
Let's go get some nutria.
Man, we did get our firewood yesterday.
We got a lot done yesterday.
Yeah.
Yeah, we've got to think of a good team name.
-Yeah, the bayou boys, baby. -The bayou boys.
Boom.
-That's right. We've got to get a sign hanging today. -Yeah.
We can hang it right there, right in the entryway.
That'll be good. Yeah.
Day 40. For most people, that is uncharted territory.
But not for me. I'm the one person out here
right now that has survived the 60 day challenge before.
So I know what this feels like.
This is familiar.
Steven and I have been getting so much food.
We're eating well, and that gives us time to do
some of these things.
Nice.
-Yeah? -I love it, yeah.
I've been here for 40 days.
The entire xl.
My feet are hard,
my blood is think, and I've been in the swamp so many times,
I'm pretty sure I'm growing scales.
But we're gonna tough it through these last 20 days
and really show the world what legends are made of.
You've got to spell "boys" with a "z".
-Do I? -You've got to.
Alright.
-Otherwise it sounds like a children's book. -Okay.
Oh my god, they're spelling "boys" with a "z".
-The bayou boyz. -Like it's some kind of weird 90s gang.
Oh, my god.
To get out to this hunting ground where the nutria live,
it's just a treacherous environment, that's why we've never gone there
up to this point.
See that trail right there.
This trail...
This trail right here
is a freaking highway.
So obvious, I mean.
They're coming in and out of this spot, super fresh.
Just got to find their dam.
Oh. It's by far
the nastiest *bleep* I've ever done.
Everything is just unpredictable out there.
You are just walking through the wettest,
dangerous, water moccasin territory that I've had to explore yet.
Got him.
I got this nutria trapped right now
under this tree. He's all mine.
I got him! I got him trapped and cornered.
No, no, no, no!
I got him! I got him trapped and cornered.
No, no, no, no!
*bleep*
*bleep*
I had him cornered.
I had him so hard cornered.
He came out from under that tree like a beaver and ran.
Well,
it's not a picasso, but it'll do.
It's more than just a sign
of the bayou boys.
This is a sign, literally a sign
of how well we're doing.
What do you think?
It looks good, dude.
And it's a constant reminder that
we will be here on day 60.
Alright, baby.
I think we're officially moved in.
-Nice. -Yeah.
Should meet the homeowners association regulations.
It exceeds them.
Bayou boys posted up shop.
And it feels good. Feels like we're part of the neighborhood now.
-Bayou boyz. -Bayou boyz.
Love it.
What do you say, max.
-Ready for it? -Let's go make a boat that's worthy of
three vikings.
What are you guys doing?
We're gonna go start burning.
-Alright. -Yeah. Just so we're dialed in.
-Wow. -Yeah.
Day three of being
immobilized from illness.
And the guys are working on building a canoe.
And I wish I could be out there helping them.
At least my pulaski comes in handy.
So I'm contributing somehow, you know.
Hey, I've got to tell myself whatever I can
to make myself feel better, right?
See what I've got going on here?
I've been piling up the wood here, we've got a fire going!
You know what fire means? Lots of coals.
We're gonna have lots of coals.
You see that dugout canoe right there?
Max and I are gonna put coals in there.
We're gonna burn out a dugout canoe.
Look at this thing smoking, bro.
In the dugout canoe,
max and I both lay down the coals evenly,
burning down to be able to make a place we're gonna sit.
And then we covered it with bark to keep the heat in there.
Eventually as it burns down, we're gonna put mud on the side
to make sure it doesn't burn through the canoe.
Yeah, baby!
This is what I live for.
This is what we have. This is what we...
-This is it. -We're gonna be rolling in this thing.
Yeah.
One person there, one person there.
Stuff in the middle. Potentially three.
How you feeling?
-Better. -Yeah?
-Yeah. -Good.
I went down and
-got some sunshine... -Yeah.
-What's up, buddy? -Just washed my hands, stuff to make me feel better.
Hey, bud. Good to see you.
Yeah.
-You're looking like you're more alive now. -Right.
You guys are... You guys are *bleep* putting in the work, man.
-This is awesome. -This is it, man.
It's a little terrifying to watch your partner lose a lot of muscle mass
and a lot of weight. At least five to ten pounds in the last three days.
I'll be worse for the wear, but...
You know, it's gonna...
It's a bad stretch.
I'm gonna be a bit more beat down.
Fourth quarter, you just keep going.
For gary to continue busting ass, getting firewood,
swinging the pulaski,
he's gonna need to put a couple pounds back on.
And just ride the ship.
I'm gonna go take a little rest.
-Alright, buddy. -I don't wanna overdo it.
-Yeah, good to see you. -Good to see you.
-It's good to see him. -Yeah, he's looking great now.
So the bayou boys decided to make themselves a sign.
Jeff hung this sign at like six foot.
I'm almost six foot three.
I have to now duck going under my...
Into my own driveway into my shelter.
So as I'm getting firewood,
I come up with a little plan to bump that sign
just to prove a point.
Okay.
-And then you want me to go right in front of you? -Yeah.
Perfect.
It's a big one.
All is...
Touch.
Is jeff in his shelter? Good.
Premeditated. I love it.
-Out of work for a night, probably, huh? -[rylie] yeah, that'll work.
-[grunts] -[matt whispers] watch this.
No, heads up!
-*bleep* -[wood clatters]
boys, bring the gator spear!
[indistinct shouting]
he's all mine.
[man] no, no, no, no!
[narrator] the xls, or xl success metric
calculates each team's likely percentage
of completing the 60-day challenge together.
-Let's dock right here. -Good.
[narrator] after a two-day search for higher ground...
Oh! Are there people here?
-There's people here! -Oh, man.
...Jeff and steven set up camp
next door to team savage.
...Guests only. We'll shelter you, we'll feed you.
...And quickly capitalized on their resources.
Oh! Fish on, baby!
Another gore, baby!
-Nice. -Oh, my gosh!
I feel like we're spending a third of our time, eating.
[thunder cracking]
[narrator] but their exposed shelter leaves them vulnerable.
It's a rookie mistake.
[narrator] still, their team xls rises significantly,
from 28 per cent to 48 per cent.
[matt humming]
-got it? -[narrator] for team savage,
rylie's health is on the mend.
Feeling like I have the strength return to me, and some energy.
[matt] *bleep*, yeah!
[narrator] and fishing hooks from their neighbors,
created new ways to secure food.
Those hooks paid its dividends, immensely.
[narrator] but jeff and steven's presence...
[screams] yeah!
...Has hampered their ability to hunt.
When he yells, that's scaring everything!
[narrator] their chance of reaching day 60 together,
rises from 21 per cent to 41 per cent.
Whoa, whoa, boys! Gator, 25 yards!
-What? -Get moving!
[narrator] six days after joining forces...
[gary] just give him a whack.
[grunts]
get him, boys!
...Ej, max, and gary scored a pivotal team win.
[gary] we're gonna be eating for days off this sucker.
Little too much gator for me, maybe.
I should maybe back off a little bit.
-[narrator] but now, a mysterious illness... -[gary groaning]
I feel like *bleep*.
...Has gary fighting to regain his strength.
I sure hope gary's eating ways are not catching up to him.
[narrator] as a result,
their chance of finishing the challenge as a team,
drops from 61 to 32 per cent.
[gary] I'm gonna fight. I'm gonna definitely fight for survival.
I'm not tapping out.
-[rylie] right there. -[matt] watch this.
No. Heads up.
-*bleep* -[wood clatters]
-that's... Nauseous, you know? -Ah, watch this!
It definitely...A little low. I've been ducking.
-But it... -Carrying firewood is just hard.
It's definitely-- definitely a little tight on the head room there.
Especially while carrying wood,
so if you can move it, that'd be great.
[steven] yeah, we'll find a place to put it.
So, as I'm carrying this wood through...
Bam! Hits his sign, gets ripped out of my hands,
scratches my side, and I thought, "you know what? This is it.
Jeff, that sign's gotta go.
You don't take it out, I'm gonna add it to my firewood stash.
Um, everybody else can walk under this sign,
without bumping their head.
I'm gonna-- I'm gonna move it out of a matter of respect.
I don't need any bruised foreheads, that are my fault, out here.
[matt] damn piece of wood scratched my side.
-[rylie] you okay? Let me see. -[matt] yeah, just a flesh wound.
[rylie] oh, yeah. Got ya.
[jeff] matt is, and always has been, a legend.
Um, but you know what?
I am the only one here that's ever done a 60-day challenge before.
And I'm out here now because I wanna be the best.
Of anybody, in this challenge.
Um, I'm gonna go all in.
[gary coughing]
[continues coughing]
[whimpers]
-you all right, bro? -No.
No?
No.
[sighs] oh, man.
[coughing violently]
[max] gary's just looking really rough.
And it's scary to see gary at a point
where he doesn't have much reserves.
[gary coughing]
[whimpering]
-what? -That's not good.
Why?
[sighs] pneumonia.
[max] we were just talking. He looked great freaking 20 minutes ago.
And it's just this perpetual ebb and flow
of him feeling okay
and the next thing you know, he's up in the jaws of freaking...Almost death.
[coughing]
love you, man.
Love you too, brother.
[ej] what's going on, dude?
-[gary] I'm coughing, I'm hot and... -[ej] oh, no.
[gary] I got the chills and...
I'm coughing hard. I can't... I can't...
[coughing]
I can't be like this on this challenge, man, it's not right.
-It's not right. -I know.
-[exhales] -[ej] there.
Not one to do that.
And plus, it's getting to the point, actually,
when now my health is in danger.
Yeah.
[coughing]
oh, man.
[groans]
it hurts. It hurts.
[coughing]
[gary sighing]
[sighing]
[medic speaking indistinctly]
[whimpering]
[coughing]
[medic speaking]
[gary groans]
[shivering]
-[ej] that's still good, right? -[medic speaking]
[max] that's what's so concerning.
His vitals are fine but he's freaking wrecked.
[medic] it is a mystery of what is wrong with gary.
[shivering]
gary's vitals have been within normal limits the entire time.
And we can tell he's in pain.
But otherwise, we can't pinpoint anything that would be wrong with him.
[ej] yeah.
[gary sighs]
[gary] I respect the challenge too much,
and the people that do it.
I can't do it laying on the ground
having a medic looking over me, constantly.
And waste away. It's not right.
[sighs]
I owe it to the challenge to tap.
-[medic] okay. All right then. -[sighs]
-[groans] -[medic] let's get you-- let's get you warm.
[coughing]
[gary] I'm tapping out of the challenge because I'm a broken man.
My body is completely broken down.
I have the chills.
I'm starting to cough a lot.
And I have a pounding headache that feels like
someone has slammed me in the face with a two by four.
I love you guys.
I'm sorry I have to go.
[sobbing]
I can't do it anymore. I'm wasting away in my shelter.
And losing all hope rapidly.
Atrophying.
I'm sorry, man. [groans]
I can't do it like this.
I have too much respect for the challenge.
I love you, brother.
-You're a good fellow. -[grunts] I love you.
-I'm sorry this happened to you. -I love you, brother.
-And I respect your decision. -[groans]
don't let anyone tell you different.
-I'm not. -I'll punch them in the face.
-[both laughing] -love you.
-Go get well. -Okay.
I'll see you guys later, okay?
-Yeah. -You're a class act, gary. Class act!
Cried in a while. Cried twice today.
[ej laughing] it's okay.
Real men shed tears for those they love.
Those they care about.
-[patting] -[sniffles]
[ej] I got you man.
-You and me to the end. -Yeah, bro.
You and me to the end.
[engine whirring]
I would've definitely been able to make it 60 days,
if I didn't get sick. I was on a hot one.
I was on a good path. Everything was going beautiful.
[sighs]
everything was going beautiful.
It doesn't feel good having to tap out because of this, but...
I'm not gonna sit there and lay there, while a medic takes care of me constantly
and my team-mates feed me constantly.
But I absolutely think I'm worthy of calling myself a legend.
I've pounded many beats in this world.
The fact that I was here, was because that I was a legend.
[max] pretty, pretty distraught man.
Taking me a little bit to,
you know, kind of figure what just freakin' happened.
I need some space to kind of mull this over.
It's a tough day, you know? It's...
It's gonna be tough sledding without my road dog.
It's been an incredible journey to be with gary.
We shared a lot of laughs.
We killed two gators together.
You know? So...
That's uh... That's a bond that I'll remember for the rest of my life.
You know I got ej, ej is the man.
And, you know? I'm just stoked I'm not by myself and we got each other.
And um, you know...
So now I really gotta make it to the end just to represent
for gary and for amber. To keep pushing.
To gary. To legend gary.
You were an incredible partner and uh, I'll see you on the other side, brother.
[narrator] gary was taken immediately to a local hospital
for further tests and treatment.
[gary speaking]
[narrator] after two days of receiving fluids and anti-biotics,
he made a full recovery...
And returned home.
But the exact cause of his illness
was never determined.
