[Episode 23]

I heard from people in the fortress

that Third Brother and Ding Qi are secretly collaborating.

You can't make things up!

I know! But last time your brother and my brother were both heavily injured.

They all say that it was Third Brother who betrayed the operation.

Don't say this kind of thing.

People who are handsome will never be spies.

I don't believe it either. Let's forget about this.

Right. Don't mention it to anyone.

I swear that I didn't go to Yongcui Pavilion that day

and I never saw Third Brother.

What was your Third Brother

doing with Ding Qi?

Eldest Master, what we've told you is true.

But we really didn't see anything clearly.

Even if we saw it clearly, it wouldn't prove anything.

We didn't see anything!

Eldest Master, please don't suspect Third Brother.

Right, right. Sang Sang said it right.

It's impossible that someone handsome would be a spy.

Why did you two go to Yongcui Pavilion?

That day was the 9th day of the month.

On the 9th day of every month, an old lady sells hairpins there.

This... I bought this one on that day.

I see.

- What do we do? - Eldest Master,

please don't suspect Third Brother!

This is a bag of musk that's been cut open.

The bag smells awful,

but the musk grains we're looking for should have already been soaked and will smell nice.

Everything that ladies use smells nice. How will we find it?

Third Master, believe me. Peng Wu must have set this up.

Just like when we play Werewolf. He's lying and is definitely the bad guy.

I'm sure he's the one who stole the musk.

You can't make judgments so quickly.

Maybe he's trying to avoid the blame for losing the goods.

Let's continue searching.

Third Brother!

- What's wrong? - There's trouble. Porter Zhang is dead.

Dead? Let's go.

Third Master, I'll go with you.

You can't go. The musk was lost on the day of being transferred. You are a suspect.

- But I... - Be assured that I will exonerate you.

- Let's go. - Yes, let's go.

Subbing and Timing brought to you by the Ancient Modern Chef Team @Viki

Porter Zhang had no family. After he got drunk last night, he fell into the river and drowned.

It's clear that he didn't drown.

He was strangled by someone who has six fingers.

Get out, all of you!

Yes, sir!

Godfather, Xia Chunyu already said

that we won't find out anything by investigating the kitchen.

Why would I listen to him?

My good days were coming. He ruined it!

It was my fault. I was unable to protect the goods.

I don't blame you.

I bet Xia Chunyu ordered Song Qi to do it.

He wanted to ruin my musk business.

I just don't have any proof!

I heard that Ding Qi is sending out a shipment of goods soon.

I am talking about proof!

That is proof.

Godfather, I think that Ding Qi's shipment will actually be our goods.

What are we to do then?

Since I'm partly to blame for losing the goods,

I shouldn't be seen. I can only trouble you and ask that you go follow Xia Chunyu.

Then what?

If Xia Chunyu has been working with Ding Qi, we will catch him in the act.

If not, we can take credit for finding it before they do.

Third Brother, how are we to find the six-fingered person?

There's no rush. I'm hungry and want some cake.

I want to buy some cake.

Long time, no see.

I missed you.

It's that expensive?

Say it. What do you want to know this time?

Who in this town has six fingers?

One piece of cake isn't enough for that information.

I have a hundred taels.

Still not enough.

Two hundred?

Little girl, don't be too greedy.

Forget it then.

You mean there are too many of them?

As far as I know, there's Pockmark Chen on East Street,

Old Zhang from Niutou Alley, the blacksmith in Xinqiao Village,

Babyface Qiao, who sells candied hawthorns in the West Market,

and Shopkeeper Hu from the pawn shop up front.

Have they all been in the city the last few days?

I'll have to think about that one.

How about this? You collect the information for me and I'll buy this entire basket.

Whoa, I didn't know you were so rich.

You're no ordinary person in the Jianghu realm, are you?

It costs a lot for me to answer questions, too.

Fourth Brother, let's go.

I win again! I win again!

Don't go! Don't go!

One more round?

Don't go. One more round.

There's no one here. Play what?

Don't go.

I will play against myself then.

Bai Zhenzhu, it's so late. Why are you still here?

Godmother, you're just in time.

Play a few rounds with me. We'll count the wins as yours and the losses as mine.

I already told you many times not to call me "Godmother."

If you play with me, I can even call you "Mother."

No more playing. Your eyes are as red as a rabbit's eyes.

You're so young. Gambling and drinking.

You need to stay away from these things, okay? Go back and sleep.

I don't want to sleep.

Or... can we play Werewolf?

It takes more than two people to play that.

- Go back now. - I'm not going back.

Forget it if you don't want to play. I'll play by myself.

Is there something bothering you?

No, there's nothing.

Okay. Let's play some other game then.

What game?

Truth or dare.

How do we play that?

Let's play rock-paper-scissors then. The loser has two choices.

You have to either tell the truth or do a task that the winner asks you to do.

Let's begin?

According to the statistics of modern psychology,

the chances a man will play rock in the first round is 90%.

Even though you're a kid, you probably won't be an exception.

Rock, paper, scissors!

I win. Choose truth or dare.

Dare.

It's simple. Go back and go to sleep.

- Truth then. - Tell me why you don't want to sleep.

- You tricked me! - Who tricked you?

You chose it yourself.

No matter what, I will not go to sleep.

Fine. You can stay here all by yourself.

Don't forget to close the door later.

Don't go! I am afraid to be alone.

Why?

Once I fall asleep, I dream of that person.

Who?

T-Tie Ying.

I killed Tie Ying, but I didn't do it on purpose.

I always thought that you didn't become a man until you killed someone.

But I didn't know that killing someone would be like this.

Didn't Xia Chunyu kill him?

Godfather said that to protect me.

Godmother, I really didn't kill Tie Ying on purpose.

I was so scared when he caught me.

I should pay for his life.

Zhenzhu, don't think of it that way.

You're a minor. It was not on purpose. The court won't--

What am I talking about?

The authorities won't hold you accountable. Don't be sad.

But Godfather suffered so much because of me. And you don't care about him anymore.

My father doesn't like him now either.

Now that the musk has gone missing from Black Wind Fortress,

everyone is saying that he was in league with Ding Qi to steal it.

How did things turn out like this?

Zhenzhu...

Sleep tight.

Eldest Brother, you have to believe me.

How do you know Peng Wu?

After the incident with Ninth Master, I knew I couldn't remain ignorant

so I asked Peng Wu to come back and teach me how to read.

Eldest Brother, did you know that I can now read...

a book this thick?

Why does he call you "Godfather?"

I saved his life when he was almost dead from being so poor, so he treats me like his real father.

Did he teach you this saying? Those who speak of loyalty often hold lowly jobs,

while it is the scholars who act heartlessly?

He didn't.

I'm worried that a lower class person like you will end up destroyed by an educated man like him one day.

Eldest Brother, you can't say it like that.

Xia Chunyu is also well-educated.

Did you make the appointment with Xue Jin from Sanjiang Association?

I did.

But Black Wind Fortress has never worked with the Sanjiang Association.

The Sanjiang Association also deals in river transport.

The enemy of our enemy is our friend.

Do you have anything else?

You have to believe me. I will find proof.

Go back and rest soon.

- What's wrong? Are you all right? - I'm fine.

Don't pick it up.

Are you all right? You've already broken five cups today.

If you break another, I'll have to take it out of your pay.

Are you too tired from managing two stores?

How about you go back and rest?

No need for that.

Tell me. What's the deal with Xia Chunyu working with Ding Qi?

Third Brother, don't lose hope.

There are a few more people we haven't questioned on that little girl's list.

We don't have much hope. If he's from out of town, he won't be on this list.

I will go question the rest of the people on the list.

Why just you?

Third Brother, I'm also partly to blame for losing the musk.

Have you forgotten the agarwood that I imported from the South Sea? Song Qi said it has arrived.

Then don't worry. Leave that to He Zhongbao and me.

Speaking of wood-working, He Zhongbao and I are the best in Nan'an City.

That's good. All of my efforts were pointless actually.

It's not pointless at all.

Why are you here?

I followed you all the way here. You were so focused on finding the six-fingered monster, you didn't even see me.

You look more energetic.

Of course. I told the truth. I feel good now.

I'm telling you. I told the truth to Godmother.

So it's not pointless. Let's drop this for now.

The six-fingered monster you're looking for... I happen to know one.

Tell us about it.

He always goes to Yongcui Pavilion to gamble.

He wears half a pair of deerskin gloves.

Bring me a pot of tea! I'm so thirsty.

Customers, place your bets.

Customer.

Let's see the winner!

- Are you all right? I'm so sorry. - Are you blind?!

If it weren't for that time, I wouldn't have known he had six fingers.

He has lost so much money to me.

Does he still go to Yongcui Pavilion?

I won all of his money. How could he go?

Those in the Jianghu realm don't worry about what happens tomorrow. Sounds about right.

Do you still remember what he looks like?

That's simple.

Shopkeeper, bring me paper and a brush!

Look at this.

That's right. He's my cousin.

He looks like that guy. It should be him.

Do you know where he lives?

If I tell you, you have to take me along during your investigation.

Just tell me.

He never said so himself.

But the help from the store said one time when he got drunk,

he was sent back to a wild village, 30 li outside the city.

Fourth Brother, you know what you have to do. Right?

Don't worry, Third Brother. I'll take him back.

We're leaving!

Wait... I thought we agreed on investigating together!

Why are we not going along? Xia Chunyu, you big liar!

Let's follow Xia Chunyu!

Yes, sir!

That's what really happened.

It's all Sang Sang's fault.

But Yao Yao, don't worry.

When Third Brother finds the musk, all the gossip will disappear.

Then you two can get back together.

Also, the agarwood that Third Brother imported from the South Sea arrived today.

In the evening, my brother and I, and Sang Sang's brother

will go to that "Paris-London-Japan" to help Third Brother with the wood-working.

I wonder, why can't I meet a nice husband like that?

I can't keep talking to you. I have to go out. Keep an eye on the store for me.

Yao Yao!

Xia Chunyu!

Xia Chunyu, you actually killed someone to keep him silent.

With which of your eyes did you see me kill him?

The Tengyun Dart is your weapon. Who else could it have been?

If you put it that way, I can't explain it.

The truth is right in front of you.

The facts don't change however you explain it.

I have one question then. Why are you suddenly here?

I think you set up a trap to wait for me.

You're still able to think about that?

Why don't you think about how you'll explain your involvement with our enemies to Eldest Brother?

Brothers, for the acts of being in cahoots with Ding Qi to steal the musk

and killing a man, capture Xia Chunyu!

My good brother, a killer must pay with his own life.

Relax. I will send the one who deserves to die, here today, to keep you company.

He will die in the most painful way possible. (Tie Ying's grave marker)

He will die by Bai Chongye's hands.

When Bai Chongye finds out the truth, it will be too late to regret.

Are you satisfied with this ending?

Who goes there?

[Grave of Tie Ying]

You?

What did you hear?

What? I'm just visiting Tie Ying.

Tie Ying doesn't need you to visit.

Don't be like that. We are still friends no matter what happened.

You're on Xia Chunyu's side. Xia Chunyu and I are enemies.

I stopped being your friend a long time ago.

Xia Chunyu is not responsible for Tie Ying's death!

How dare you say that?

Xia Chunyu told you that and you believed it?

No.

He didn't tell me anything.

Who do you think the murderer is?

Not Xia Chunyu? He killed himself?

He killed himself with Xia Chunyu's secret weapon?

Tie Ying was--

Believe me. Xia Chunyu didn't kill Tie Ying.

I want to believe you.

Give me someone else's name and I'll believe you.

Say it.

Forget it. I have something important to do. I'm leaving.

Ding Qi! Ding Qi!

Why are you sticking to me like a bandage?

Ding Qi, what are you going to do?

None of your business.

All my brothers, listen up.

From now on, this woman is not allowed to be anywhere near Xinyi Court.

Yes, sir!

Let's go!

Ding Qi! Ding Qi!

No. I have to go to Black Wind Fortress to warn Stupid Donkey.

Let me go!

Second Brother, my apologies.

Let me go!

Xia Chunyu! Xia Chunyu!

Eldest Brother will not forgive you!

Pretty Sister, did you have a fight with Brother Court Master?

Don't be mad at him.

He's not ignoring you. He's just busy.

Busy?

What is he busy with?

He... He's going to receive some goods, I think.

Goods? What goods?

It's called... Something agar... Aiya!

Pretty Sister, I can't remember. Let's not think about it.

Play a game with me. Let's play...

Kite!

Pretty Sister, play with me.

Look, look!

Why were the goods lost on the very day they were to be handed over?

Song Qi said the agarwood from the South Sea has already arrived.

Now that the musk has gone missing from Black Wind Fortress,

everyone is saying that he was in league with Ding Qi to steal it.

The agarwood that Third Brother imported from the South Sea arrived today.

In the evening, we're all going to "Paris-London-Japan" to help Third Brother with the wood-working.

Brothers, for the acts of being in cahoots with Ding Qi to steal the musk and killing a man and...!

He's going to receive some goods, I think.

I will send the person who deserves to die here to keep you company.

And he will die in the most painful way possible.

He will die by Bai Chongye's hands.

- Flying a kite! Flying a kite! - Ah Bing!

Tell me. Is that batch of goods called musk?

Musk? I can't remember.

Don't worry. Do me a favor.

Help me get two items, all right?

- Godfather! - Quickly! Untie me!

Godfather.

It was Xia Chunyu. He killed and stole goods.

Right. Xinyi Court has a batch of goods to be shipped.

Based on the time, Ding Qi should be on the way to pick them up.

The direction he went was toward Xia Chunyu's "Paris-London-Japan"

Is that so?

Go tell Eldest Brother!

Song Qi! You made me suffer so much!

What are you doing here?

How come you have the key to get in?

You picked the key up from the lake?

I don't have time to explain. Leave!

What do you know?

The lost musk is in that box.

Ding Qi thinks you killed Tie Ying so he set this trap to frame you.

- Go now! - I know. But we still have time.

I have to move the goods out of here before Fourth and Fifth Brother arrive.

I will find other evidence to explain things to Eldest Brother.

There's no time to explain.

Ding Qi's people are on the way here.

He's coming under the guise of exchanging the goods.

By being here, you're just falling into his trap.

They knew that I would come here with my last bit of time. I underestimated my enemy.

- Go now! - I can't go!

- Why not? - They set the trap to catch me.

I believe they've blocked all the roads around here.

If I escape now, I would look like I'm guilty.

My kite is outside. We can fly away together.

I know that it's Ding Qi's, but now's not the time to worry about that. Let's go!

Yao Yao, you came for me, which proves you still have feelings for me.

When they come, hide in the Xingchen Ship. I'll deal with them.

I can't trust you. You're tricking me.

Listen to me!

They're here. There's no time.

They came for me. It has nothing to do with you.

But if you're here, you will be dragged into this.

You are afraid of death. So be a good girl and hide in there.

That's right. I am afraid of death!

Why are you saying this now?

I need to say it!

Yao Yao.

Yao Yao, it's true that you're afraid of dying.

And I do hate those people who are greedy for life and are scared of death. But you're not one of those.

You are you and I like you the way you are.

I love you.

You know what it means now?

I guessed it a long time ago.

Yao Yao, why?

I know what you're doing.

But I'm better than you at this trick.

I love you, too.

Xia Chunyu, come out!

Third Brother. Third Brother!

Men! Take him to the doctor!

Eldest Brother! Eldest Brother!

Why are you here?

What do you think? My bad luck. Got caught.

You mean...

You hurt him so bad. Looks like you didn't see him as a husband at all.

He was getting in my way.

If he didn't try to stop me, my batch of musk would've been in Ding Qi's hands a long time ago.

Nonsense! Xia Chunyu was the one who stole it and killed for it.

I saw him use this dart to kill!

That's enough. It's just one of his secret weapons. He's not the only one who's allowed to use it.

You...

I tried to convince him...

not to be so pretentious and use such a conspicuous signature weapon in the Jianghu realm.

He wouldn't listen to me. I had to use it. Stupid.

- That's not right! - What's not right?

See for yourself. See if the musk is under the wood.

This is Xia Chunyu's place. How did you get in?

I see. You two worked together.

Eldest Brother, they're working together.

Friend, your hair is long but your sight is short.

You look strong but your head is empty.

Xia Chunyu bought this place to please me.

I should have a key to this place, shouldn't I?

- But... - But what?

Since he has a key, too,

if anything goes wrong, I can safely blame him.

It's a shame.

Lady Ye, you talk a good game. But it's also possible...

that you're covering for him.

You're a very funny guy.

Xia Chunyu and I have been divorced for so long.

Me cover for him? How stupid do I have to be?

Also, if I marry Ding Qi,

our wedding host will be an important official.

You didn't know about such big news?

Big Brother, would you believe something as ridiculous as Ding Qi and Xia Chunyu working together?

You think I don't exist?

That makes sense.

Third Brother and you have been apart for a long time.

Recently, you have been hesitating about whether to pick Ding Qi or Xia Chunyu.

Third Brother was wrong about you.

Since we caught you in the act with the stolen goods, we will arrest you.

Wait, Eldest Brother, I understand. I finally understand.

Since you and Ding Qi are about to marry,

you could've just shipped the goods directly to Xinyi Court.

Why would you pick here to trade from?

That is none of your business.

- Your business-- - How dare you talk back?

Eldest Brother, we should wait until Ding Qi gets here and confront him.

- Eldest Brother-- - Enough!

When will you start bringing your brain when you go out?

We caused a commotion on our way here.

Would Ding Qi still come and throw away his life? He would have turned back already.

Second Brother, your contributions on this matter have not gone unseen.

Once we resolve this matter, you and your men will receive an extra 10% from the musk profits.

- Take her away. - Yes, sir!

Eldest Brother!

I'm warning you. You're not someone who can call Xia Chunyu by his name.

Before I sentence him, he's still the Third Master of Black Wind Fortress.

Do you understand?

E-Eldest Master, I-I understand.

Eldest Brother, listen to me!

- Don't say it. - Why not?

Eldest Brother is just confused right now!

Eldest Master has figured it out and is just feigning confusion.

He wants to protect Third Master.

- All the more reason to speak! - Godfather, don't.

Since he's made up his mind, why would you go against him?

The time ahead is still long.

Bai Chongye, what are you going to do?

You should hand me over to the government even if I am guilty.

How dare you do this to me?

Are you scared now?

- It's not too late to tell the truth. - I said it a hundred times already!

I'm telling you, Bai Chongye, I am Minister Wei's goddaughter.

If you kill me, he won't let you go, and all of Black Wind Fortress will go down with you!

What are you saying?! I'll get rid of you right now!

Sheng Wu, she's right.

Minister Wei won't let me get away with this. That's for certain.

That's all the more reason to get rid of you before you can tell anyone about it.

Don't be afraid. It's just one thrust and it will be over.

Eldest Brother!

Stop!

She had nothing to do with the musk.

I know that.

You're the one who sold out Black Wind Fortress.

She's just taking the blame for you, isn't she?
