[Sound of the Desert]

Episode 25

Have a good talk.

I won't disturb you then.

Uncle Chen, please get up.

I can't take it if you do this.

Miss Xin Yue, I'm begging you.

Allow me to finish.

Back then, Shi's Shipping's Ninth Lord, Master Mo, came to ask about you.

He visited three times.

I turned him away every time.

I did... I did pull face then.

Although Young Master ordered to have the horse carriage driver kept away

and sealed all information at the inn in Liangzhou

he only asked me not to reveal your whereabouts.

He never ordered me to offend the Ninth Lord.

Young Master is a proud man who would cover up for his kin.

He wouldn't make any excuses for himself

and he wouldn't find it right to do so either.

I saw that my mistake has caused the two of you to drift further apart.

Uncle Chen, why did you do that?

Is this the happiness that you want for Wu Ji?

Get up now.

What else can I do about it now?

If you wish to talk about it, get up first.

I'm not used to listening to others talk when they are on their knees.

Miss Xin Yue, Young Master went out on his horse a few days ago

and accidentally fell off.

He is still unconscious.

- What? - The imperial physicians all tried

but they still can't do anything for him.

Miss Xin Yue!

Wait!

Miss Xin Yue, I haven't finished my words yet.

I heard that Master Mo is skilled in medicine.

I mean to ask Miss Xin Yue for help.

You're here to ask me to ask the Ninth Lord to save Wu Ji?

Miss Xin Yue, asking a doctor for help is unlike anything else.

If he isn't sincere about treating the patient, then it is of no avail.

Miss Xin Yue, I know what you're like.

You dislike it the most when people beat about the bush.

I am very ashamed.

I don't know how to ask you for such a favor.

Miss Xin Yue, if Master Mo can save Young Master

even if I have to beg for his forgiveness with my life

I will not hesitate at all.

You've underestimated the Ninth Lord.

Head over to Shi Manor.

Xiao Yue! You're here.

What would you like to eat? I'll get the cooks to prepare it for you.

Ninth Lord! I'm here to ask you to treat Wu Ji.

He's been unconscious since last night.

I heard that even the imperial physicians can't do much.

What happened to General Wei?

He fell off a horse.

All right, I understand.

I'll go and get ready.

The Ninth Lord is here.

- Ninth Lord. - Don't bother. His life comes first.

Where is General Wei?

Here, please come this way.

I'll carry that.

Ninth Lord, I'll have a look at him first.

Ninth Lord! Please save Wu Ji!

Wu Ji...

Wu Ji, I am here.

I was wrong.

I shouldn't have been mad at you.

Let me have a look.

Wu Ji will be fine, right?

Don't worry. I'll definitely make him regain consciousness.

What is the imperial physician's opinion?

We couldn't come to a conclusion.

His heartbeat is weak, but it is still regular.

We were originally going to use medication to stimulate his heart and wake him up.

Then we would nurse him back to health.

But General Wei's symptoms are very bizarre.

Usually, an unconscious person can still be force-fed medication.

But General Wei refuses to be fed.

Acupuncture didn't work either.

We've looked through all the medical books to no avail.

General Wei is suffering from the blockage of air in his heart.

This isn't normally a huge problem.

But it has triggered his underlying illness of poor blood circulation.

I believe that it is due to over exhaustion on the battlefield.

General Wei is unlike others.

When he fell from the horse

he had a strong will to protect himself before he passed out.

That's why it's almost impossible to force feed him any medication.

Madam Wei, the imperial physicians are truly skilled in medicine.

Since none of the methods they tried is of any use

I can't possibly be better than them.

But...

But what?

I do have a method that we can try.

But I've never put it to use before.

Please do tell.

Humans have five orifices.

The mouth is just one of them.

If medication can't be taken through the mouth

we can try having him absorb it through his skin.

The skin is also connected to our five organs.

My method is to have General Wei's clothes off

and him shut in a room with medicinal steam.

Medicinal steam is a way to get medication into the blood and organs.

But the steam will surely make his temperature go higher.

This isn't too good for patients who are in coma.

It's possible that it might make his condition even worse.

It cuts both ways.

The Madam will have to make a decision.

We wouldn't dare to do so.

I beg Madam to agree to it.

Wu Ji can't stay like this any longer.

The longer he stays like this the worse it is for him.

I believe in the Ninth Lord.

But... But what if his condition gets even worse?

The Ninth Lord said that he will definitely save Wu Ji.

Then I'm sure that he will.

What do you think, Great General Wan?

Sister, there isn't any other options.

We can only give Mister Mo's method a try.

I believe that Mister Mo has thought this through as well.

Mister Mo, please.

Madam, please have some tea.

Wu Ji will regain consciousness.

He definitely will.

He will be fine.

He will be absolutely fine.

How is Wu Ji?

He's all right now.

Wu Ji... Why is still he still unconscious?

Don't worry, the general is fine now.

It's just that the Ninth Lord has put him to sleep to help him recuperate well.

He's just fallen asleep instead of being in a coma.

Ninth Lord? Ninth Lord!

Anyone there! Get a horse carriage! Send the Ninth Lord back to Shi Manor!

- Yes! - I'll take him home.

What's the matter with Ninth Lord?

Why are his hands so cold?

The Ninth Lord is a lot weaker than ordinary people.

The room was filled with water vapor

so even an ordinary person couldn't bear the humidity.

Not to mention that the Ninth Lord kept cooling General Wei down with ice.

It's already a miracle that he could withstand such heat and coldness.

Please treat the Ninth Lord with care.

The general will thank you greatly for it.

Don't worry.

Miss Xin Yue, when the general wakes up later, he will definitely wish to see you.

There are so many people here by his side

it doesn't matter if I'm not around.

I'll be back after I've taken the Ninth Lord back home.

Miss Xin Yue, go with him then.

We'll take good care of Young Master here.

I've actually met you once.

General Wei asked me over to Shi Manor to treat your illness.

I've actually already troubled Imperial Physician Zhang once.

Miss Xin Yue, the Ninth Lord puts his own life at risk to save another.

This is the first time that I witness something like this.

The Ninth Lord is very frail.

You have to stay by his side at all times.

He must have a good rest.

He mustn't catch a cold or get too agitated.

Observe his condition and send for me if anything happens.

Thank you, Imperial Physician Zhang.

I'll take my leave now.

This way, please.

Take care, sir.

Xiao Yue, will you stay here with the Ninth Lord for a while?

All right then. We'll leave the room first.

- Mister Shi! - What is it? It's fine.

Xiao Yue is here.

But I'm still worried about the Ninth Lord.

What song is Xin Yue singing?

It is a Tartar folk song.

The song tells the love story of the noble lady Yizhu and the slave boy Bayaer.

Listen.

First, it was the noble lady who gazed at Bayaer's back in the sorghum fields.

But later on, it was Bayaer who stood in the sorghum fields

gazing at the lady's back.

Does the song sound lovely?

Let's leave now. Come on!

You're awake.

Talk to me.

Will you?

'I crossed the sorghum fields on the east side'

'and saw the back of Bayaer.'

'I planted the seedling of elm trees'

'and they will grow tall.'

'The lady has grown up'

'and matchmakers will come knocking on her door.'

'I crossed the sorghum fields on the west side.'

'Bayaer saw me from behind when I got married.'

'I crossed the sorghum fields on the north side.'

'Bayaer saw me from the side when I got married.'

'I crossed the sorghum fields on the east side.'

'Bayaer saw me from behind when I got married.'

'Bayaer saw me from behind when I got married...'

You also know the story of Yizhu and Bayaer from the folk song?

Why was Bayaer so stupid?

Why wouldn't he turn around to take one glance at Yizhu?

Why did he always make Yizhu guess what he was thinking?

Why wouldn't he tell Yizhu about his troubles?

Bayaer is so smart.

But he didn't know what Yizhu had in mind.

Although Bayaer let Yizhu down

at the end of the song, they still got together.

Do you believe in it?

- I'm leaving now. - I believe in it.

But after I woke up

the singing stopped.

I really hoped that I never have to wake up.

Rest and recuperate well.

I'll visit you again when I have the time.

Xiao Yue! Tell me!

Who matters more to you?

You can sing to me but why can't you give me an answer?

Put your promise aside.

I just want to know who you would rather be with.

I beg you to answer me.

Who would you prefer to be with?

Leave now.

What are those sounds?

- What are those sounds? - What's going on?

- It's so scary. - Mother!

Get back into your houses and hide inside.

Listen up! Your team takes that path.

- Yes! - Hurry up! Keep up with the others!

Hurry up!

What is that person doing?

Whatever. Since I've messed around, I might as well make a bigger mess

and have a good time.

An official?

Chase!

Stop right there! Chase!

Stop right there!

- Stop right there! - Chase him! Hurry up!

- Run quickly! - Stop right there!

Stop running! Stop right there!

Hurry up! Go after him!

You'd better turn yourself in!

Sir, we can't barge in there!

This is General Wei's manor.

- Guards! - Present!

Inform the Superintendent right away!

Tell him that the bandit has escaped into General Wei's manor.

- Hurry up! - Yes!

Quickly! Retreat!

There aren't any maids watching over him?

Uncle Chen is so forgetful.

Why is he so careless?

How dare you scare me! No wonder there aren't any maids around.

I've been waiting for you for ages.

If you still don't get back here after sunrise

I'll go over there to snatch you back.

Robber.

Robber's wife.

Why are you dressed in this today?

You're in big trouble!

Someone might report to His Majesty tomorrow morning

saying that you've hidden a cat burglar.

I've drawn out all of the police officers here in Jian-An tonight.

Wow... What have you stolen?

I was just messing around for fun.

Why don't you look like you've just recovered from a serious illness?

You're so energetic.

Are you still unwell?

I'm basically fine in all parts of my body

except for one.

Which part?

We'll send for the imperial physician when the dawn breaks.

No, I have to get Uncle Chen to send for him now.

You...

You haven't been concerned about me for a long time.

There are still some advantages in being ill.

I'll get sick more often...

Lusty little thief. You're so naughty.

Xiao Yue, will you bear me a child?

I can't marry you now

but I'll definitely hold on to you for life.

If you don't care about legal status

I'll really disregard everything else.

How about that, my dear wife?

Young Master.

Someone always shows up at the crucial moment.

What is it?

Master Superintendent asks to see you late at night.

He said that a bandit has escaped into our manor.

He asks for your help to search the manor.

I'm here to ask you for permission. You'll have to make a decision.

You can't make a decision for such a simple matter?

Young Master, our security measures are almost as good as that in the palace.

No one could enter the manor without alerting the guards.

And I heard that wolves stirred up quite a din here in Jian-An tonight.

I thought to myself...

I thought...

Uncle Chen, I sneaked in here in the middle of the night.

I thought so as well.

But just a while ago, Superintendent came to seek audience again.

He said that someone was bold enough to knock out the Crown Prince's tutor.

The Crown Prince's tutor was furious.

He claimed that if the criminal isn't arrested

he will sue the police officers for neglect of duty.

I'll pay a visit to the tutor's manor in person later.

Yes, Young Master.

Come on, speak up.

How did you knock out the Crown Prince's tutor?

Your Majesty, General Li saved me and our child.

I'd like to toast to General Li to express my gratitude.

You should do so.

General Li, I toast to you in gratitude.

Your Highness, you do not have to thank me.

That is my duty.

Your Majesty, not only is General Li mine and our son's savior

he also fought off the Tartars valiantly.

He can be considered a ferocious commander.

If such a loyal subject could be put to greater use

he will surely be of great assistance to Your Majesty

like General Wan and General Wei.

Both father and son of the Li family led Nan Dynasty's army.

They have both rendered meritorious services.

General Li's two older brothers died fighting for Nan Dynasty.

Li Ji, your father is already at an old age.

It is now entirely up to you to make your family proud.

I understand.

I thank Your Majesty for your concern.

Your Majesty, there is an urgent report!

Your Majesty, a bandit injured the Crown Prince's tutor tonight

and escaped into General Wei's manor.

It's said that the bandit resembled Miss Xin Yue of Fair Maiden's House.

Wu Ji usually acts out of the ordinary.

Who knew that the lady he favors is just like him?

This Xin Yue is quite interesting.

But the Crown Prince's tutor was attacked.

This matter needs to be investigated properly to put everyone at ease

as it concerns the security of Crown Prince.

Moreover, the guards only said that the bandit resembled Xin Yue.

If it isn't her...

then General Wei's safety would be at risk.

Wei Wu Ji stormed the battlefields.

Why would he fear a bandit or two?

Yes...

But shouldn't we give the Empress and the Crown Prince a definite answer?

Go and investigate it.

Your Majesty.

General Wei has been in favor of Your Majesty.

Common officials wouldn't dare to look for bandits in his manor.

I am old friends with General Wei.

I'm willing to investigate this matter, so as to avoid unnecessary conflicts.

All right then! I'll leave it to General Li to investigate into it.

I hereby obey Your Majesty's command. I will take my leave now.

Greetings.

Sires, my young master has just fallen asleep soundly.

Please come another day.

The Crown Prince's tutor is now waiting for news in his manor.

If we leave now

he will surely report us to His Majesty.

Sires, you are unaware that

my young master was in a coma

and guarded by imperial physicians for days. He just regained consciousness.

It's rare that he's finally fallen asleep soundly today

so if he is to be disturbed, I really couldn't handle the consequences.

Whatever the matter is, please at least wait till tomorrow?

If that is so, we'll take our leave now.

- Yes. - We'll take our leave now.

This way, please.

General Li Ji arrives.

Uncle Chen! Where's General Wei?

General Li Ji! What brings you here?

Our young master just fell soundly asleep.

I'm here to visit him on His Majesty's orders.

For General Wei's safety

and the laws of Jian-An City

we ask that General Wei assist us in arresting the assassin

who escaped into Wei Manor.

Please ask General Wei to come out, I'll be here waiting for him.

Yes. Please wait for a moment General Li Ji.

I'll go and ask my Young Master to come over right away.

Xiao Yue, you still haven't answered my question.

What do you want me to answer?

Young Master!

Uncle Chen, what is the matter again?

General Li Ji is here on His Majesty's orders to seek audience with you.

He said that it is for your safety and the laws of Jian-An City

that you should assist them in arresting the assassin who escaped in here.

He is waiting out there in the living room.

His Majesty? Li Ji said that I am an assassin?

That means I am assassinating His Majesty?

Li Ji said that Xiao Yue is an assassin?

Yes, Young Master.

It seems that I'm in big trouble this time.

This is a serious crime... Is Qin Xiang trying to crush me?

Qin Xiang?

What is that about?

I really don't know what you're so reluctant to talk about.

Uncle Chen! If Li Ji figures out that the 'assassin' is Xiao Yue

then you don't have to lie to him.

Just tell him that it's me and my woman who were too bored

and went messing around for fun.

We're sorry for having caused any inconvenience to others.

We're already having a rest on the bed now.

If he wishes to arrest us, he can come in here by all means.

I'll be waiting for him.

I haven't seen what prisons look like in Jian-An City anyway.

It's a rare opportunity that he's giving me.

Yes.

No! You mustn't tell him that!

Uncle Chen!

I...

Heed my words, Uncle Chen. Go on.

Yes, Young Master.

Wei Wu Ji, are you teasing Li Ji or me?

Why do I think that you're holding a grudge against me?

Sort of.

This grudge that you speak of isn't the one that I mean.

I'm referring to my discontent in our intimacies...

Li Ji is very meticulous.

Moreover, he deliberately intended to make it hard for you.

If I face him head on, I might not be able to get the upper hand.

I might as well just be cheeky and mess up his plans.

I'll see what he will do next.

If he gets annoyed and makes the wrong step

we could then use that against him.

Fine! I'm not as shameless as you are.

Are you going to sleep now?

It's almost dawn!

I ran on the roofs of Jian-An City all night long.

If you won't let me sleep now

I'll head back to my house.

Go to sleep then.

We'll sleep together.

Are you really going to the tutor's manor tomorrow?

The Crown Prince's tutor is the teacher of the Crown Prince.

I'd still have to visit him in person.

The Crown Prince's tutor has a very fierce wife at home.

He looked very sneaky tonight.

He must be visiting his mistress.

You won't have to visit him tomorrow.

Just send someone to ask him if he'd like this matter exposed.

That might just do the trick.

You just said that I'm shameless.

You even thought of such a despicable solution.

General Wei has just recovered from a serious illness.

Are you feeling much better now?

Your Majesty, I'm fine now.

Thank you for sending imperial physicians over to treat me.

But now I regret doing so.

You offended the Crown Prince's tutor the moment you're recovered.

I was so sick that I got muddleheaded

and messed around for fun.

I ask the Crown Prince's tutor for forgiveness.

Please punish me, Your Majesty! I'm willing to bear the consequences.

Your Majesty, I went to Wei Manor last night on your orders.

I had intended to seek out the truth.

But General Wei refused to see me.

I think that if he isn't punished severely

others might then follow his example.

By then, there would be no superiority between rulers and subjects.

Exactly, Your Majesty.

My injury is a trivial matter

but the regulations and law matter more.

The tutor is right.

I should ask to be punished.

But there is one matter that I have to bring up.

Last night, the tutor was sneaking through small lanes last night in a cape.

He was traveling without a horse or carriage or guards. I am very confused.

Why is the tutor sneaking out in the middle of the night?

I heard that the tutor has a mistress.

She is beautiful, plays the zither well, and knows a lot about poetry.

I wonder if the tutor was out meeting the beauty last night?

You... This... This is a personal matter.

Why should we discuss this in court?

It's not a serious matter for me to be punished.

But if I'm convicted of assault, the tutor's wife is bound to ask

what the tutor was out doing late in the middle of the night.

I am curious to see if it's the tutor's anger that matters or that of your wife's?

Forget about this.

The less trouble, the better.

You didn't mean any harm anyway.

I won't hold it against you then.

The Crown Prince's tutor is very generous.

He's not going to hold this matter against you anymore.

But Wu Ji, you mustn't fool around like this in the future.

I was wrong to do so, I will remember not to do this in the future.

You must hold a banquet for the tutor as an apology.

I obey Your Majesty's decree!

Your Majesty.

How is Pian Er?

He's just fallen asleep.

I'd really like him to grow up quickly.

Then I could teach him archery and horsemanship myself.

He could conquer the lands for me.

Your Majesty has Great General Wan and Young General Wei.

I'm afraid that there wouldn't be any wars left for Pian Er when he grows up.

That's true. I do have Wan Qian and Wei Wu Ji.

This Wei Wu Ji really gives me quite a headache.

Was it really Xin Yue last night?

You're also worried about Xin Yue?

Wu Ji even cheekily threatened the Crown Prince's tutor for her sake.

Now that I think about it

I still find it funny.

I didn't expect the tutor to be so scared of his wife.

He sneaked out of his manor to visit his mistress last night.

He happened to run into Wu Ji and Xin Yue.

Wu Ji even asked him before my eyes

'Is your anger more important or that of your wife's?'

Did he really ask him that?

He really did.

That tutor didn't even get mad at him.

Instead, he chose not to pursue this matter anymore.

This is really funny.

Young General Wei is indeed smart.

He has quite the same character as Xin Yue.

But honestly speaking, Your Majesty is too biased.

Wan Qian holds a high reputation both in the army and Imperial Court.

I need someone to counterbalance that.

Wu Ji might be willful and haughty.

But his victories in war could not be surpassed.

That's the kind of person I like.

The more he stays away from vying for authority, the more I will give to him.

This is to make it known to the Wans that Wan Qian isn't the only one

who will fight wars for me.

Wei Wu Ji doesn't like power and influence.

Even if Your Majesty favors him, he never asked for more authority.

Instead, he became spoiled and unpopular.

Someone like him is actually the most trustworthy and reliable.

Wan Qian doesn't like power and influence either.

But he has the Wan family behind him.

Even if he doesn't wish to fight for more power, someone will do it for him.

Xin Yue, Shi Jin Yan has sent someone here to ask you over to Shi Manor.

Shi Manor?

Yes, the messenger said that you must head over there.

It seems that the Ninth Lord is unwell.

I'll go over there right after I get changed.

If he is fine, I'll be back very soon.

Go on then.

Here.

The Ninth Lord is in Qing Garden outside the city.

- I'll take you there right away. - What exactly happened?

How could he go to the suburbs before he is fully recovered?

Xiao Yue, the Ninth Lord has always been very frail.

He just didn't want you to be worried

so he always pretended to look healthy when you were around.

After you left, he passed out right away.

After Imperial Physician Zhang came to look at him

he told us to take him to Qing Garden immediately.

He said that it will do the Ninth Lord's health some good.

- Xiao Yue! - Let's go.

There's geothermal here. It's winter now after all.

The Ninth Lord's body is very cold so we must take more caution.

I asked you so many questions on our way here, but you never answered me!

Forget it. I'll take a look myself.

The Ninth Lord doesn't need anything but your company.

My Lord, you must hang in there.

Xin Yue will be here soon.

Xin Yue.

Has the Ninth Lord been conscious?

Since he went into a coma, he hasn't regained consciousness.

Leave it to me.

Xiao Feng.

Xiao Yue, we'll leave the room first.

My Lord, can you not always put me first?

Why don't you think more for yourself?

Should anything really happen to you

what would you have me do?

How can I possibly be happy and not feel guilty?

Xiao Yue...
