Narrator: This is the story of a Mississippi family.

A family whose pioneer men and women had carved

their broad plantations out of the wilderness itself.

By 1860, their pleasant valley

had become almost a state within a state,

its people very willing to risk their lives on any chance

rather than to acknowledge the authority

of any conscience but their own.

These were the famous Dabneys of Lebanon.

I'm sweepin'

I've been sweepin'this whole day long

tired of sweepin'

soon as I sweep

the dust blows back

the leaves fall down

mm-hmm, I got to start in

sweepin' and sweepin' again

Uh-huh. I thought so.

Morning, dabby.

Ever see such a lovely morning?

I see you totin' that Brandy decanter.

That's what I see, miss morna. Shh!

You know very well what it's for.

I know Mr. Sam ain't supposed to have no Brandy, that's what I know.

I ashamed of ya, wantin' to deprive grandpa of a little pleasure.

I don't want to deprive Mr. Sam of nothin',

but your mama see that decanter goin' down,

he gets the pleasure and I get the layin' out.

Of course, you will,

but you won't really mind, will you?

Oh, that sweet talk of yours get me into more...

Trouble comin' from the hallway

morning, mother.

What are you doing, morna?

Oh, I was just talking to dabby about grandpa.

Oh, honey, your petticoat's showing.

I hope that's all that does, mother.

Morna dabney, what are you up to?

I'm just going in to see grandpa, that's all.

Well, it's about time!

Where in blazes you been, girl?

Morna: Shh! Mama!

I don't care a hoot about your mama!

Where's my Brandy?

Hm.

What are we gonna do with him, tishomingo?

For every spoonful of medicine he takes,

he demands a glass of Brandy.

Your grandfather's just a wicked, vain old man

who thinks he knows more than the doctor.

What does that fool macintosh know?

Everybody but him knows I'm dead already.

Ah. Only I won't let 'em bury me.

You see?

You're right, tishomingo.

He's a wicked old man.

Don't you sass me, young woman.

There's enough devil in you to stand against anybody,

except me.

And don't you forget it.

Hm.

Oh, where's that Clay maclvor?

How come you're not out lollygaggin' the fields with him?

Why, Clay doesn't lollygag, grandpa.

He's a gentleman. Mm.

He's getting a buggy from the stables.

We're driving over to see how our house is coming along.

Ain't that thing ever gonna get finished?

In my day, a wigwam on the riverbank was good enough.

Just somethin' to keep out the chills and the flies.

That's all you need.

Clay thinks there's gonna be a war. Oh!

He's right, morna.

There is going to be a war.

What's a war got to do with getting married?

Pa agrees with Clay.

They think we should wait and see.

Ohh, we're not a pussyfootin' family!

I'll handle your father today,

just as soon as he gets back from Jackson.

I want to stand up at your wedding, morna.

That means it's gotta be right soon.

You don't fool anybody, big Sam.

Everybody knows you're practically indestructible.

Dabby says I should give Clay a love charm.

She knows how to make one.

You grind up rooster spurs and...

Grandpa? Huh?

Do those things work?

If that dress doesn't get him,

there's no use grindin' up any roosters.

Hasn't it got any top, or is it comin' off?

Oh, it just gives that impression.

Maybe I should take my bullwhip

and have a quiet talk with that young man.

Oh, what a pair. You're just as bad as grandpa.

Well, I'll give you two more days.

If he hasn't made up his mind by then,

I'll build a fire under him.

No, you wouldn't. Wouldn't I?

Well, I'll manage him. I haven't half-tried yet, truly.

Well, then you better get at it.

Take a look out there.

Now, how did she get there?

Now maybe you'll listen to me

your own sister's going to win him away from you,

first thing you know.

Grandpa, that's a challenge.

Whoa, boy! Steady!

Fiery team. Have to keep hold of 'em all the time.

They're not what I'd pick,

but then morna's just like grandfather.

He's always been partial to fire in horses,

and fire in women, too.

Do you agree with him, Clay?

Now, why do you ask me that, aven?

Oh, I just wondered.

You're not like grandfather at all.

I've always thought of you as being,

well, a more subtle kind of a man

with more sophisticated tastes.

I'm surprised to hear you've ever given me a thought, aven.

Why, Clay maclvor!

Fiddlesticks, here she comes.

Why, aven, how sweet of you to entertain Clay for me.

Clay thought it would be nice if I came along to see the house.

Clay thought no such thing.

Now you pop right down out of there.

Well, it was a try.

We'll, uh, continue our discussion

another time, won't we, Clay?

Aven honey, I'd hate to see you die young.

I'd really hate it.

It's very strange, big Sam.

You and I buried your sister, honoria, many years ago.

There she is, driving away.

Scares me to see it, tishomingo.

How like her morna is.

I remember what happened to honoria

after she lost the man she wanted.

Never loyal to any man again

nor able to leave any man alone.

Morna has Clay maclvor.

Aye, but if she should lose him,

there's enough dynamite in that girl

to twist the whole history of this family

and this valley past recognition.

All I want in the world now

is to see those two married before I die.

From the way she went out of here,

I think you'll get your wish.

And if that happens, there's bound to be a war.

Well, what if there is going to be a war?

All the more reason why we shouldn't wait.

You know what your father thinks about it.

Grandpa will take care of him.

Clay, darling, why are we wasting all this time?

Why don't we get married right away?

Darling, the house won't even be finished.

A wigwam was good enough for grandpa,

and it's good enough for me.

Morna.

I declare, sometimes I think

you've got cold chicken gruel in your veins...

Ohl

ohh!

Did it hurt you? No.

Oh, my dress! My dress!

I'm sorry. Oh, Clay!

Oh, grandpa was right.

This thing is coming off.

Well, don't look so scared, darling.

It won't really.

Get me a few of those little nails, will you?

Here you are.

Well, fix it.

I'm not very good at this.

You'll get more practice later.

Right in here as a matter of fact.

You know, most people think we'll whip the Yankees overnight.

But I don't.

I think it may take weeks.

Probably will.

Naturally, I'll have to fight for the south.

Naturally.

Well, what would your grandfather do?

He'd fortify the valley and fight both sides.

Well, honey, you can see where all this uncertainty puts me.

I don't even know where I'll be once the war starts.

Oh, I don't believe you belong in the cavalry at all.

I can just see you leading a charge,

slowly backing your horse!

If you know someone else who'll suit you better,

I'll kill him.

Oh, you're the only man I love.

You're the only man I ever will love.

You're the man with whom I hope to spend my life,

and I think you ought to do something about it.

Hyah!

Hoab looks as though he'd been riding hard.

He must have news.

Yeah, probably ruined a good horse

to tell us somethin' that could have waited till tomorrow.

Well, it's time you got here.

What's this about you holdin' back morna's marriage with Clay maclvor?

Oh, the devil with Clay maclvor, father!

Do you know what they're saying in the capital?

What? Lincoln's going to be elected.

The north elect a president? Bah!

Well, I think they can! They've already got the house!

But Lincoln! It's impossible!

It's not impossible, father!

I talked to governor pettus myself.

He's so sure of it, he's already called a convention.

He says that if Lincoln's elected,

Mississippi will leave the union!

Oh! Pettus may think he's leavin' the union,

but he can bet his life I'm not leaving it!

You'll be leaving more than that, big Sam,

if you don't calm down.

Aw, dead or alive, I won't let that upstart decide those things for me!

This is my valley!

Tishomingo and I have fought and bled to get it.

It was a wilderness till I blazed a trail in here

and made it what it is.

Why, I even named this state,

and now that little squirt thinks he can tell me

what country I'm in!

He's the governor, big Sam.

Well, I put him up there,

and I can take him down.

We better do something about him.

Yeah.

Well, I won't be here.

But you, hoab, you're gonna take over this valley

and run it the same as me.

I'm gonna try, sir. This valley is...

Easy, Sam.

Stand away from me. Stand away!

This valley is only 20 miles of this earth,

but it's the place where this family

has put its tap root down.

No power in the world can dictate to you here.

Stand on your rights, hoab!

Whatever... whatever...

I'll get the doctor.

I won't need the doctor anymore.

Get morna and Clay.

Get reverend kirkland.

I want to see morna married.

That's all I want of this valley now.

They'll be here.

I was beginning to think you were never gonna marry me, Clay.

Honey, it wasn't because I didn't want to.

The way things have been happening,

well, I just had to be wise for us both.

But sometimes you're too much of a gentleman.

Or maybe it's that I'm a hussy.

Grandpa says I am.

Yes, and you're self-willed and impulsive, too.

I'll be good for you, darling.

I've got to admit I won't be one of those meek little wives.

Our marriage won't be peaceful,

put it'll sure be exciting.

The belll

it's grandfather!

Oh, Clay, if grandpa dies...

But maybe he's all right.

He just has to be.

It's grandfather.

I'll Mark the rest of the trees tomorrow!

Run up to Dr. macintosh.

Tell him I'll ride up with him.

Yes, reverend.

Where... where's morna?

Where's... Where's my granddaughter?

Tishomingo: She'll be here, Sam.

When in blazes...

Quickly. He's been asking for you.

Grandpa?

Grandpa, I'm here.

Ia li...

What did you say, grandpa?

He spoke in choctaw.

He said, "I go."

Your grandfather is dead.

Grandpa?

Tishomingo: All right, boys, get those skid-poles.

On this angle here.

Take it away.

Tishomingo, Bruce is gone!

He's riding to Jackson to challenge Keith Alexander!

Is the boy mad?

But why, morna? What's behind it?

It's that article in Alexander's newspaper.

Bruce thinks it's an insult to grandfather,

and he won't listen to anyone.

When did he leave? Just as I left the house.

He'll be killed, tishomingo! Oh, no. No, he won't.

You're not gonna stop me, tishomingo.

I'm ashamed of you.

Your grandfather is scarcely cold in his grave,

and yet there's anger and bitterness in your heart.

Did you see this thing?

Just listen. "Sam dabney came from nothing.

"The blood of debtors and bandits,

"pirates and bonded servants was in his veins."

Keith Alexander wrote that.

"But his god was freedom, and his patron Saint was courage,

"and he lived to be great."

Why, Bruce, this thing is a tribute.

Sam dabney came from nothing?

That from a man who has no right to any name at all?

Everybody knows Alexander's illegitimate.

Then why do you care what he says?

Because this rag goes everywhere!

Half the people in the south read his stuff.

Well, if you're thinking of demanding satisfaction from Keith Alexander,

that's a mistake no man has ever made twice.

His dueling reputation doesn't frighten me.

I can shoot, too.

Very well. We'll talk to him together.

I don't need you, tishomingo!

We'll see.

Don't you think you're being a little unreasonable?

I do not choose to bandy words with you, Mr. Alexander.

Hmm.

Well, for the sake of the lady's good name,

if nothing else, I insist that you search the place.

Thank you.

By the way, will Tuesday morning be convenient?

Tuesday?

Well, naturally, you realize

that if you look behind those curtains,

you'll be questioning my veracity.

My seconds will wait upon you as a matter of course.

You must know I can't fight you.

But you can come here with a lot of outrageous accusations, can't you?

Now take your wretched carcass outta here

before it has to be carried out.

Close the door!

Darling, you were magnificent.

You better wait in there a few minutes.

He's probably still running.

Quick!

Who in the devil are you?

You'll find out who I am.

This is Bruce dabney,

grandson of my friend, big Sam.

Your obituary of my grandfather is an insult

no gentleman would write!

Insult?

Why, I respected Sam dabney more than any man in this country.

Then why did you say he came from nothing?

You rode 100 miles on the strength of that?

I've come to demand satisfaction!

You're tishomingo, aren't you?

How old is this fire-eating whelp?

Twenty. Oh.

Very well.

I was wrong.

Your grandfather did come from something.

He came from the iron of Virginia

and the red Clay of Georgia.

Will it smooth your ruffled feathers if I print that?

Well, I... l suppose.

I... I guess maybe it, uh...

Does.

And you?

I'm happy to be relieved of the necessity of killing you.

You're what?

Oh, I'm well aware of your ability with your pistols,

but my whip is faster.

I think I understand why Sam dabney

held you in such high regard.

I'll ride back with you, of course,

and explain to your family. Oh, no.

I mean, I'll be glad to tell them that you...

I insist on explaining in person.

I'm sure they'll understand.

Surely you're not denying me the hospitality of your home?

Well, no, but... but...

An apology delivered in person always carries more weight.

Isn't it wonderful, morn'?

The most notorious man in the south

right down there on our veranda.

How did father ever let him in the house?

Probably grateful because he didn't kill Bruce.

The say he fought 17 duels.

All I know is, it's as much as your name is worth

to be seen with him.

Isn't it exciting?

What a chance to make Clay jealous.

You play up to Keith, and both men go crazy.

And where do you come in?

Me? Oh, I end up with Clay.

Oh, you do, do you?

Hey! Mine!

I'm sorry, darling.

Morn', not so tight!

Well, aven, honey, you want to look stylish, don't you?

There we are.

That takes care of you beautifully.

Ooh! You untie me, morn'! Ooh!

I can't understand why there isn't any news of the election.

Do you realize we've had a new president ever since yesterday?

We don't even know who he is.

Thank heaven it can't be Lincoln.

I'd have to be out of here in the next ten minutes.

Why? Do you owe him money?

I'm a soldier.

If Lincoln's elected, every state in the south will leave the union.

Well, let them.

You've certainly fought hard enough against it.

I just do that to make trouble.

It sells more papers.

I must say, I don't understand your position.

You need to?

Uh, to the United States.

And to the south.

Both at the same time?

That's silly.

Clay: What do you mean, sir?

I mean that the south is being run by slaveholders,

who'll break up the union no matter who's elected.

I resent your insinuations.

Frankly, captain, I don't give a picayune what you resent.

My father is a slaveholder.

I was raised in that tradition.

Was your own father a slaveholder by any chance?

I'm going to answer you this one time.

Yes, my father was a slaveholder.

And if you ever mention my family to me again...

Stop it, both of you!

He didn't mean any insult, Keith.

He may take it as he likes.

Morna: Having a good time, gentlemen?

Sorry, morna, I didn't see you.

I'm morna dabney.

Uh, allow me to present Mr. Keith Alexander.

My sister, sir.

Well, I was hardly expecting you, Mr. Alexander.

Well, you see, Keith and I talked it over...

Keith? Well, Mr. Alexander and I talked it over,

and after we talked it over...

I apologized,

very handsomely, I thought.

Now that I'm here, my only regret is

that I didn't insult your family a long time ago.

Won't you sit down?

Clay, can you ride over to the house with me tomorrow morning?

We should talk to the workmen, you know.

You two have a house?

We're building one.

But you're not married yet, are you?

It's not my fault.

Oh?

Our wedding was postponed because of John brown's raid.

But that was a year ago.

Clay: I'm a soldier.

Yes, you told me.

And we've been in constant danger of war ever since.

Well, you're a very patient soldier.

If I were as fortunate as you,

I doubt if I could be that patient.

Grandpa's death, you know.

I understand.

Yes, we all understand, except grandpa.

I know what he's thinking.

Morna, what will...

Listen!

Lincoln! Lincoln is president!

Clay: I don't believe it.

Are you sure of the signal?

Reverend kirkland was to ring slowly

just like that if it was Lincoln.

I'll come past and say goodbye to your family.

Your servant.

Bruce: I can't believe it.

Darling, reverend kirkland can marry us tonight.

And tomorrow... Can't you understand, dear?

This is war.

All I can do now is jump in and fight to finish it and get it over with.

Don't do it, Clay! Darling!

Please don't leave me here!

I'll come with you right this...

I wish with all my heart that it were possible.

But it's out of the question.

Darling, we can buy all the things I need.

We can be married somewhere along the way.

I'll come by in an hour.

Maybe you'd rather talk to captain maclvor

about them first, miss dabney.

The captain's gone. Oh.

I'll see that you get the windows tomorrow.

Thank you, ma'am.

Keith: Good morning.

Again may I say I was hardly expecting you, Mr. Alexander.

May I help you?

No, thank you.

I plan to walk a little way.

Oh, fine.

So that's the house, huh?

Yes, that's it.

Do you think it'll be finished

by the time the general makes up his mind to get married?

Clay, you mean?

Your wit's very feeble this morning.

He is a soldier, you know?

Hasn't he told you?

I gather that's intended to be funny, too, Mr. Alexander?

Oh, now, why the formality?

Why don't you call me Keith?

Oh, I will if you want me to.

Only I was taught to have respect for my elders.

Touche.

Course, if you're offended, you can always challenge me to a duel.

Now, that is a very interesting idea.

How do you mean? I mean very interesting.

You see, you're not maclvor's kind at all. You're my kind.

What kind of a man is it who makes love to another man's betrothed?

I hope you feel you've done a fine, brave thing

quite in keeping with your birth.

Why, you despicable...

Now I know you're my kind.

I give you fair warning.

I'm gonna keep on making love to you

whether you marry him or not.

May I?

You'd better get out of this valley.

Oh, I like it here.

As a matter of fact, I happen to have something

that I think your father needs.

You? What could you have that any dabney needs?

Well, I'm not quite sure yet,

but I can promise you I'll be around here a lot.

We'll see about that!

Oh, Mr. Alexander!

We want to talk to you!

Yes?

We believe Mississippi to be in grave danger.

Ohh.

Well, the way this state is run,

I should think it would be...

Most of the time.

That's not quite what we mean.

We no longer believe than any power on earth

can keep Mississippi in the union.

Pa, there's something I have to... Just a minute, morna.

She'll be crushed! Devastated past all hope of recovery!

Well...

We have a plan of the utmost danger to us all.

We're asking you to join us in it.

But l...

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt.

If Mississippi decides to fight against the United States,

I mean to hold this valley as neutral ground.

Neutral?

There is no such thing.

I'll declare Lebanon valley an independent state free of Mississippi.

You people can't defy the whole south.

I am the south as much as any living man.

I'll send out our call,

and every southerner with a lick of sense will rally here.

I can have 1,000 men. I can have 5,000 men!

And the militia will come down on you like a ton of rock.

Just let them try it.

You know, you can be hanged for a conspiracy like this?

Let 'em try that, too.

This man is completely mad.

Well, we want you to tell the nation that he isn't.

I tell the nation?

Mr. Alexander, your paper has a carrying power

far beyond any other voice in Mississippi.

It's not only read all over the south,

it's quoted everywhere in the country.

Thank you.

What do you want me to print?

We want you to make it known that Lebanon

is fighting for the right to work in peace.

More like the right to be burned out

and chased across Texas, I'd say.

For my part, I'd gladly give my life to make men free.

We'll fight secession until the last utter limit,

but when it comes and we declare our independence here,

you must issue our call for men.

Oh. I must?

I wouldn't ask it of you, except...

Except that your answer probably means

the difference between our failure and our success.

What was it, morna?

The whole idea is easily the worst I ever heard in my life.

I suppose it was inevitable he'd refuse.

No, on the contrary. I accept.

"The government of Mississippi

"or any other

"from this day forth."

If that doesn't hold the old fool, we'll try dynamite.

Mm-hmm.

"And hereby deny our allegiance

"to the government of Mississippi or any other

"from this day forth.

"If that doesn't hold the old fool,

"we'll try dynamite.โ€

Wait a minute.

Isn't that what you said?

Well, yes, but it doesn't... He didn't put it in.

Pretty sound, now, don't you think?

Yes, I think that should get us all hanged very nicely.

Morna's horse. Something must have happened!

Horse must have fallen somewhere along the leaf river.

This gray sand could only come from there.

But that's up near ellisville.

What would she be doing up there?

Her bags are packed. She wasn't coming back.

Hoab, send for Dr. macintosh.

Harness up the spring carriage and put a stretcher in it.

Follow as closely as you can.

Keith: Isn't this pretty far from the road?

Bruce: She knows every shortcut through these woods.

This way.

Go back, Bruce, and get the stretcher.

Do not move her.

Keith: Morna. Morna?

Clay?

Clay, please.

Please don't be mad at me.

I had to come to you.

He was gonna stay there.

Don't you understand?

He was gon...

You made love to this girl?

Certainly I've made love to her.

Shall I tell hoab that?

Tell him whatever you like.

Put it over there, quint.

You can go to bed.

Dr. macintosh thinks now that she may live,

but she will never walk again.

Well, why can't we get more doctors

from New Orleans or someplace?

You can send for Clay maclvor.

You think that would help?

She needs the will to live.

If we can tell her that Clay is on the way...

I've already sent a message.

Take days and weeks of red tape for him to get a furlough.

He can desert can't he?

To me, maclvor is nothing but a contemptible little...

He failed her once, and he'll fail her again.

But if she wants him, she's gonna have him.

See this gets on the wire to Washington.

I never dreamed that... Your father?

I did not say that.

Mr. Alexander, several times you've challenged men

for asking the question that's answered here.

I just want you to know that I realize

how much this has cost you.

I prefer not to discuss it if you don't mind.

I'm an old man,

but my rifle and my whip are yours,

for I am your friend.

Just see that's delivered in Washington.

Bruce, saddle up a horse. Get this on its way.

Oh, Dr. Mac, this...

This bandage is so stiff.

It'll be uncomfortable for a while,

but that's the very best thing for it, morna.

Mother, what's really the matter with me?

Now, honey, don't you worry.

Clay will be here soon.

You mustn't tell him.

I don't want him to know I was coming to him. Of course, dear.

Will I be able to get up?

Clay will be disappointed.

But you look much prettier right where you are.

Your hair looks so nice.

My leg!

I can't feel anything!

It won't move! Hush, dear.

It's paralyzed! It's not what you think.

I'm a cripple!

It'll be all right, mornal

do something, Dr. Mac.

Please do something!

It's no use for Clay to come home now.

I don't want him to see me like this...

Ever.

You believe there's no chance then?

I'm sorry, hoab,

but if I gave you any real hope

that the girl would walk again,

it would be a lie.

What's the matter with you people?

You're licked before you begin.

Begin what?

I've stated plain medical fact, Mr. Alexander.

Well, you're the doctor, but I don't believe in fact.

And neither do I. That girl will walk again.

Might be a bare possibility with surgery,

but I wouldn't dare attempt that

short of two or three years.

But, Mac, her leg will be atrophied by then.

Yes, I... I'm afraid it will.

If you let me try the Indian way...

If you mean will it do any good

to beat the brains out of a Tom-Tom,

yes, fine,

but keep it away from the house.

I speak of massage.

Oh. That's all well enough, I guess.

All right, then.

From now on, her leg will be rubbed day and night.

Aren't they pretty?

Mm-hmm.

Morna, I came in to tell you goodbye.

I've got to, uh, go on back to Jackson now.

Goodbye, Keith.

L, uh...

Look, doctors are not infallible, you know.

What is inside of a person counts for an awful lot, too.

I know. It doesn't matter.

Well...

Keith, wait.

There's something I have to ask you.

Do you mind, aven?

I know this is unfair,

but no one in the world can tell me but you.

Do you still feel toward me

as you did when you kissed me?

In a way, I do.

But now I feel that...

I don't know, I feel that...

I want to take you in my arms and hold you

and never let anything hurt you.

But you don't feel the same.

Then I was a woman to be loved.

Now I'm a woman to be protected and pitied.

If you feel that way, so will Clay.

I'm not Clay.

Well, suppose you were.

He's in love with you, isn't he?

What kind of love would it be?

Oh, I know he'll be loyal,

but things will be different.

I can't stir his heart again.

I don't believe that.

I'll release him, of course.

But you'll be hoping with all your heart that...

That he won't let you go.

I guess I never wanted anything so much.

Well...

Well, I have to go now.

We still have a fight on our hands

when we can remember it.

Good luck, Keith.

May I kiss you goodbye?

Do you really want to?

Bye, tishomingo.

Don't let her give up.

Don't let her ever give up.

I don't intend to, Keith.

Until we're all hanged, I mean.

Clay. How is she?

As well as can be expected.

She'll be glad to see you.

Is she scarred?

No. Her face is all right.

Be right with you, Keith.

Has he been here all the time?

He's been here, yes, at my invitation.

Not very careful of your associates.

Just a minute.

It may be, young man, that I'm not very careful of my choice

of a prospective son-in-law.

For your information, it was Keith Alexander got you your leave.

Who does he know with enough influence to get me...

If I were you, I wouldn't ask that question.

As a matter of fact, I think you've asked questions enough.

I'm sorry, sir. You better go in.

More strongly.

Do not be afraid to bear down.

Yes?

Clay!

You mustn't talk to her too long.

Why, morna.

Sit down, Clay,

and let me look a minute.

Did you have a good trip?

Well, I only got as far as redbank.

Railroad travel is really becoming very crowded and bad.

You know, I don't know where all the people come from.

This country is... Oh, stop it, Clay! Stop!

There's only one thing now that matters to either of us.

Clay, I can't marry you.

Morna, you don't mean that.

Didn't they tell you?

Tell me what?

That I'm...

That I hurt my back, and it's not gonna get well.

Morna. I'm never gonna be able to walk anymore.

I can never be a comfort to you now,

so I'm breaking our engagement.

I'm not gonna let you do that. Why, nothing...

All my life, I'll have to be carried and dressed and fed.

My paralyzed leg will shrivel up

and become wrinkled and ugly.

Every day you'd see that.

Well, this is something we'll have to face together.

I can't even get out of bed by myself.

I'll never be able to ride,

or dance,

or walk through the woods with you.

Morna...

Dear heart...

You're mine.

You always will be.

In sickness or in health.

Oh, Clay.

Do you really mean that?

You're mine for better or worse.

I made some tea for you, too, Clay,

but you may have something stronger if you like.

Thank you, but I think I'd better get home

and get cleaned up.

I'll come back later.

Tomorrow, I'll go take a look at our house.

I'll go there every day when I'm here

so that I can tell you about it.

Well, don't you want to wait until we can see it together?

There are so many little things that...

That only a woman would notice.

Of course, dear,

but I'll let aven go with him.

It'll be just like being there yourself.

All right.

Walking back to Washington?

On.

My horse. I had him put away.

Get in.

I'm sorry, Clay.

I wish with all my heart I could change places with morna

for your sake.

What did you say?

Nothing.

It wasn't anything.

"I speak to you in the last hours before disaster.

"The secession convention meets within the week.

"Nobody doubts that Mississippi will be plunged

"into a bloody conflict."

Darling, you haven't come to see me.

"Thousands of you realize that you have nothing to gain..."

What? "...Nothing to gain,

"but everything to lose,"

period.

"One man is showing the kind of courage

"that offers a chance of survival.

"Hoab dabney of Lebanon is standing fast.

"If Mississippi secedes from the union,

"Lebanon valley will secede from the state."

Fight for your farms and your homes!

Join your lands to Lebanon,

and we'll save some part of the state to live in

and to work in when all the rest is smashed and cleaned out!

This brawl is a rich man's war and a poor man's fight.

Can't you see that?

Bring your families and guns to Lebanon

where we know what we're fighting for!

And we'll show 'em what fighting is!

I'm gettin' out of here!

Hangin's what this yankee-lover needs!

Oh, tishomingo, you've got the Patience of a Saint.

Come on, now. Turn yourself over.

You know you can.

Mm, "turn over, turn back, pull, stretch."

That's all I hear from morning till...

Come in!

Keith!

How wonderful to see you.

Hello, morna.

Well, come on in. Tell us about Jackson.

We're dying to hear all your news.

What happened? Wait a minute.

Let me get my breath, will you?

I want to hear about you first.

Is she ready to walk yet, tishomingo?

She's doing fine.

The only one who's benefitting from my massage is mother.

She's lost ten pounds,

and I've gained five.

Oh, you look fine. I feel fine.

Tishomingo, I want to sit up.

Put me on the couch, please.

May I have the pleasure?

Where is the general?

Has he gone back to Washington?

Sarcastic as usual.

Clay doesn't have to go back just yet.

He has enough influence to stay on a while.

Oh?

And, Keith, I was so wrong about him.

No one in the world's ever been more loyal,

or more true.

Clay maclvor's my whole life.

Well, that's wonderful.

Just wonderful.

Well, this is a pleasure, general.

It's no pleasure to me. I hold you in contempt.

I obtained your leave, and I can have it revoked.

There can be only one answer to a presumption like that.

Is that supposed to be a challenge?

You name the time, sir.

Well, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I can't accept it.

Oh, don't misunderstand me, please.

I haven't the slightest objection to blowing a little hole in you.

But, you see, if I damage you,

morna would hate me.

What'll Mississippi say when I report

that you refused a challenge?

You'll make no such report for the simple reason that you'll be laughed at.

But if you force the issue

and try to pull that gun,

I'll blow it out of your hand

and then shoot you in the posterior.

And a bullet in a soldier's rear

is one thing I would love to hear you try to explain.

There are ways to force you to fight.

Certainly, and [I'll gladly look you up

and give you the pleasure of dying

the day I think morna hates the man

who is making love to her sister.

Keith Alexander knows.

Does morna?

I don't know.

Clay, what are we gonna do?

Aven, either I've got to tell her,

or go back to her.

Poor, morna.

If you tell her you love me, it'll break her heart.

She's so pathetic already.

You couldn't hurt her anymore.

I do love you, aven,

and I can't give you up.

You can't ask me to. Oh, Clay!

Mississippi has seceded from the union.

Rally to Lebanon!

Don't lose your freedom!

Rally to Lebanon!

Rally to Lebanon!

Rally to Lebanon.

Well, that's done.

God Grant we not wish we were dead.

Oh, we can get that wish.

Mr. dabney, you and I must understand each other.

I think I've made myself clear enough.

I've said from the first, sir,

that I blame Keith Alexander

and not you for this act of treason.

Careful of your words, Clay.

You already know, sir, that I have no choice

but to fight for the south.

I know nothing of the kind.

As long as you stay in this valley,

let alone propose to enter my family, you stand with us.

That I cannot do!

Then you leave the valley once and for all.

Of course you understand that morna may have a very different...

Morna will do as I say!

Well, at least I can explain to her...

I'll tell her whatever there is to be told!

If I ever see you in Lebanon valley again,

I promise you you will stay here!

I'm your servant, sir!

Well, I'm not yours! Now get out!

You gotta eat somethin', miss morna.

I don't care what my mother said.

I don't want it!

Now get away from here and leave me alone!

Yes'm.

You keep this thing wrapped round you, honey.

Now what are you mad about?

If you don't mind, Mr. Alexander,

I'd prefer to be left alone.

Why?

So you can sit out here and feel sorry for yourself?

Will you please go away?

I should think you'd be happy that your sister married him

and took him off your hands.

I don't care to talk about it.

Well, fine.

That's just fine.

Then we can talk about me, hmm?

All the while, Clay was pretending to love me,

he was only pitying me.

Pitying me!

There's nothing left.

Nothing that I care about at all.

Oh, stop that sniveling before you drown yourself.

And get that ring off your finger.

I forgot it was there.

Your sister's the one to feel sorry for.

He was a poor excuse for a man to begin with.

I don't want to listen to you.

And take me into the house.

By all means.

Get back in there and give up.

Oh, you were doing fine

as long as you thought you were going to marry

that mess of braid with legs.

But now you've got a wonderful excuse

to bog down in a lot of self-pity.

Don't you dare talk to me like that!

Maclvor was smarter than I thought he was.

I don't blame him in the least.

You take me into the house!

You bet I'll take you in.

You can stay flat on your back until the world falls down.

I think it just fell down.

I'll send Bruce out to you.

Go out to your sister.

Hoarb: Captain, if you'll take my advice,

you'll go right back where you came from.

Now, look, Mr. dabney.

What seems to be the trouble, hoab?

These gentlemen have graciously consented

to escort me to jail, at Jackson, of course.

This country's at war.

You people are just about an inch

this side of a charge of insurrection.

No.

Personally, I don't believe that about Mr. dabney.

If he'll come along with us and explain himself,

everything will be all right.

Well, let's understand each other, captain.

You're not taking Mr. Dabney back to Jackson.

No?

Mr. dabney might be a big man in these parts,

but if necessary,

I'm taking him back to Jackson in chains.

And I'll shoot the first man

who reaches for a set of manacles.

You can he hanged for this.

Well, I have a very good idea

that they're going to try to hang us anyway.

Captain: This is no place for a lady.

This is where I intend to stay.

You can go back to Jackson, captain,

and tell them hoab dabney threw you out.

Have you people gone crazy?

I could very easily take the whole lot of you.

If you care to look out the window,

I think you'll see you're wrong.

Now if you wish to leave peacefully,

we'll give you safe conduct out of here.

You have my word of honor you won't be molested.

Mr. dabney's honor has come to mean

about as much as the honor of Keith Alexander.

Morna: Bruce!

Ohl

you should have killed me, Alexander.

You know what this means.

You're not hurt very much, captain.

Now I think you better get out of here while you can.

Bruce.

How fortunate.

What is?

I take it your father will feel that he owes me a favor.

He'll be surprised if 1 ask him for you, won't he?

Well, I should think so.

It sure would perturb him.

Why?

You mean you don't know?

Go ahead and say it.

Let's not talk about it.

Say it!

Because you're a dabney and I'm a what?

The Dabneys.

Remember her?

Name was honoria, wasn't it?

Grandfather's sister.

Very widely known...

To every rip and rake on the river.

What do you mean, sir, saying a thing like that?

Great family resemblance, isn't there?

Yes, might easily be a portrait of you.

I think you'd better leave.

She looks a little as if she were laughing at you, doesn't she?

Would you like to know what she's thinking?

You've said about enough! Now get out of here!

She's thinking you'll see the day

when you'll come to me whether I marry you or not!

Get out, you...

Aan!

Keith!

Mornal! Morna, you stood!

You stood by yourself!

I did! I did, didn't 1?

And, darling, you're going to walk.

I'm going to walk!

I'm going to walk!

Jeremiah tetweller. This is ma and the kids.

Howdy.

Glad to see you in Lebanon.

Any guns? Just this here.

Well, we'll have a new one for you soon.

They'll take care of your land and rations at the store.

Just follow the other wagons. Giddup.

Keith, just look down there.

See 'em comin'?

There'll be more, too.

Now if we can just get those guns you're after...

Oh, we've got the guns.

We've got luggers full of breechloaders

that Jeff Davis would give his teeth for.

We'll unload in the pascagoula this week.

If we can just get 'em here,

we can hold this valley till kingdom come.

We can even march out of here and advance on Jackson.

Why, Lebanon valley can be the...

The living rock on which the whole south can be rebuilt.

Here you are. The bread's in the back.

Keith, look!

I can stand up all the time now!

Oh! Whoa!

Oh, Keith.

Keith, there's very little goes on this valley

that I don't know about,

and there's one thing I think you should know.

Morna's not for you. What?

I hate to tell you this, but it's true.

When the time comes, hoab, I'll take her.

You'll be makin' the biggest mistake of your life when you do.

That girl is still in love with Clay maclvor.

She may not know it herself,

but I can see it every day.

Why, 10 years from now if he happens to ride by and wave to her,

she'll leave you or any other man living

and follow him away.

I'll take her, hoab, just the same.

Say, you feel pretty chipper this morning, don't ya?

Hop in.

I'll drive you right to the pascagoula.

Now, that's a delightful idea,

but I can't risk being compromised, miss dabney.

Ooh! How silly.

Not at all.

See, I was taught to beware of impulsive young girls.

There's only one answer to that, Mr. Alexander.

What? Touche and giddap.

Major maclvor, sir.

Come in, come in.

Glad to see you, major. Sit down.

Will you have some coffee?

No, thank you, sir.

You've been transferred to my command

because of your special knowledge of Lebanon valley.

It's true that you do know this terrain?

Every foot of it.

The valley's ideal for defense,

but how on earth do those people expect to get in supplies?

They'll run them in from the Gulf, sir.

But our sea blockade.

Well, you see, sir,

there's a maze of about a thousand bayous down there.

A whole Navy couldn't plug it up.

Uh-huh.

But if a blockade were thrown

across the south end of the valley, it'd stop all that.

I see what you mean.

After that, I'd wait for the rains.

They'll never expect troop movement over those hub-deep roads.

Then I'd make surprise march

and infiltrate the valley by night.

Mm-hmm.

Well, I can let you have all the troops and artillery you'll need.

Tell me something, major,

because of your connection with the dabney family,

uh, if there's any reluctance on your part

about taking command of the actual attack,

I can use you in an advisory capacity.

May I ask a question, sir?

Certainly.

Is it true that Keith Alexander is in command down there?

Yes, it's true, and he's a good officer.

He served under Houston.

That's enough for me. I'll take the valley.

Good. Sit down, major.

Sergeant, ask lieutenant Marshall to come in.

Hello, tishomingo.

We've been concerned for you, Keith.

Tried to warn you about the blockade,

but our messengers never came back.

Whoever planned that blockade

certainly knows this country.

Thicker than flies.

Where's hoab?

Down at the store.

There's no chance of getting those guns through?

No. I hid 'em down on the Pearl river.

Hmm, that makes things pretty hopeless.

Well, it was a pretty hopeless,

mad scheme to begin with.

I'm still wondering how I got mixed up in it.

It's quite simple really.

You'll find her down by the stream.

This water's powerful cold today, miss morna.

I wish you'd tell tishomingo that.

Now, honey, you know he knows what's best.

Well, I don't see him in here.

Keith: Hello down there!

Keith!

Hello!

Mornal!

All right for me to come down?

It will be by the time you get here!

I suppose I just thunk of somethin'

I gotta do someplace.

Why, Janie, I didn't say that.

But it's not a bad idea.

Here, honey.

Morna? Morna: It's all right!

Come on, Keith!

Oh, I'm glad to see you.

We worried about you.

Now, don't tell me you rode your horse here.

I had to.

There was no one around to carry me.

I guess I've been away too long.

No, don't come any closer.

Still giving orders, huh?

Stay there, please.

Whoa!

Ho!

Ha ha!

What do you think of me now, huh?

I told you you'd come to me sooner or later.

And if I couldn't have walked to you,

I'd have crawled.

Well, now, what was that for?

Well, I should think at your age

and with your reputation, you could tell.

Do you have to have a tree fall on you

to know that I love ya?

Aw, maybe I do.

Listen, Keith, a long time ago,

you told me that I was your kind.

I know that now so well.

You've known that since the first day.

Only you were all cluttered up with that tin soldier.

Oh, I guess there's a man like Clay maclvor

in every woman's life.

They don't wear very well, do they?

Mm-mmm. They don't wear at all.

But there's one thing I want you to get through your head

right this minute. Hmm?

You're never gonna get rid of me.

I'm going with you wherever you go, always.

I was gonna take you along regardless.

You poor darling,

as if you had any choice.

You know, for the first time,

I think this valley's gonna be worth fighting for.

Aw, Keith.

You talk too much.

We've got to break that blockade some way.

Bruce: Father!

The men are rebelling.

They refuse to drill anymore,

and they're marching on the store.

Men, men, what does this mean?

Leader: We're through, that's what it means.

Field hand: One spoon of salt in a month!

Cropper: No coffee in two months!

Field hand: We're gettin' out of here!

Why, you can't leave!

We're in this thing together!

In the army, you'd be hanged in two seconds!

Well, we ain't in the army,

and you're the ones that's gonna get hanged!

We'll have an army! Just give us time!

Leader: Don't make me laugh!

There ain't 500 men in the valley fit to soldier.

You call yourselves soldiers?

What do you expect us to fight with,

our own rabbit guns?

There's no powder for 'em!

We don't aim to fight the whole country

with our bare hands to save your neck.

We'll have the best guns there are made!

You'll have salt, and coffee, and everything else you need!

You can't beat the blockade and you know it!

There's plenty of stuff in that store

if you wasn't savin' it for yourselves!

And we're takin' it and clearin' out!

Come on, men!

Now listen to me, you yellow-bellies.

You're in this to stay the same as we are.

And you're gonna stand fast

if I have to kill every one of you.

All right, now get him out of here.

The rest of you, fall in!

Come on, move!

Drill 'em, Bruce.

Drill 'em until they drop.

All right, come on! Fall in!

That's what we've got for soldiers.

They're no different from other men

who've run out of hope.

I buried that down on the Pearl river

along with the guns and powder.

Might as well have buried it on the moon.

Now to top everything else, we've got the rain.

Month in, month out, now they've begun.

Hoab, this is what we've been praying for.

What is? By sundown, every road in this country

will be a river of gumbo mud.

Nobody ever tries to move anything here

during the rain.

He's right. Their commander must know that.

He knows everything else about this country.

He'll pull in his men and rely on the mud to pin us down

hoab, we can beat that mud.

Give me 300 men and as many mules as you can spare,

and we'll move out tonight.

Keith, if you can get those guns,

we'll fight 'em till the world freezes over

and then fight 'em for the ice.

I'll be back day after tomorrow.

All right, men, move out!

Good luck, Keith.

And godspeed.

I don't believe there's a confederate

in this half of Mississippi.

Don't be too sure.

Then why didn't Keith run into anything

as he marched out to the south?

It's here to the north the attacks will come.

Yes, but the rain.

Where's your picket?

He ought to be here.

Throat's cut.

Where's your next post?

What's maclvor tryin' to prove?

That it rains around here?

Don't worry about maclvor.

He knows what he's doing.

Yeah? Well, I don't see him here getting his britches wet.

Hoab: How long has maclvor been in command of this blockade?

I don't know that, sir.

Well, his headquarters are at ellisville, aren't they?

I don't know.

But you do know he's planning to attack tonight!

I didn't say that, sir.

Take him out of here.

Quint, see that he's fed. Yes, sir.

It's pretty obvious they are going to attack tonight.

We should have known it was Clay maclvor.

What if it is?

What matters is that Keith is 12 hours away

with 300 of our men.

Bruce, take the fastest horse we've got

and go find Keith wherever he is.

Tell him to get those men here as quick as he can.

I'll get him. Keith can't possibly get here

much before morning.

We can only pray that something unforeseen

may delay maclvor.

90 miles of mud hasn't delayed him.

You better start prayin' for a miracle.

We need a miracle.

Hoab: 12 hours, 12 hours!

If only something, anything

would just give us 12 hours' time.

Well, we might as well muster what we have.

Start ringin' that bell.

Don't ring that bell! It'll warn maclvor!

He plans a surprise! Don't you see it, man?

Of course I see it, but without Keith and the men,

what else can I do?

We gamble on Keith.

But if he does get here in time,

we can turn this into an ambush.

We can trap them and destroy them.

Let's get together what we have.

Stay off the roads till night.

As soon as its dark, take your places

in the fort and the lines.

We'll get there. Good!

Bring your trappers to the west trench.

We'll right with what we have until Alexander comes.

We'll hold 'em.

All the women and children

must go to the swamp cabins.

Hurry now.

Everything ready to go, shellie?

Well, most of the things are in the wagon.

But, hoab, can't we take some of the pictures...

Only the things we need, shellie.

You can't be more favored than the rest.

Where did you leave morna? Morna?

Wasn't she in the village with you?

Of course not.

That's odd. I wonder where she is?

Dabby, go find miss morna, will you?

Tell her it's about time to leave.

Well, don't stand there. Do as I tell you.

She not here, Mr. hoab.

Not here? Where is she?

She gone, sir.

Gone? Where?

I don't know, sir.

Dabby, don't you lie to me. Where is she?

She's gone to Mr. Clay to try and stop him.

Oh, goodness. How long ago did she leave?

About an hour.

Why didn't you tell somebody?

I promised! I promised! Hoab! Hoab!

Morna's doing this for you!

She's doing it for herself!

She's still in love with Clay maclvor!

That's not true! She's betrayed us all!

Every soul in this valley!

But you said over and over you wanted 12 hours,

and she's trying to get them for you, that's all!

There are prices I will not pay for this valley

or anything else!

Quint, change my saddle to the bay horse!

You'll never overtake her.

You'll be caught and hanged, and the valley will fall.

I'll either bring her back,

or I'll open maclvor's throat with my own hands!

I'm the only one who knows enough about the swamps

to head her off before she gets to ellisville.

This is my job, tishomingo! No, hoab!

Your part is stand fast in the plan that we've made.

If you don't, we're all finished.

What do you make of it?

Sounds like a horse runnin'.

Pretty far off.

Halt! Who goes there?

Better take a look.

You see anything out there?

Yeah! There's a strange horse out here!

You better call the corporal!

It'll be a pleasure to get that corporal...

What's the matter, murph?

Murph!

What happened?

Shot me a bushwhacker here.

He got Murphy.

Looks like some kinda Indian.

He was probably after the horses.

Get hold of the road!

Halt! Don't shoot!

Who are you? I'm morna dabney.

Major maclvor's my brother-in-law.

I have to talk to him at once.

Take her to headquarters.

And have the sergeant come down here.

Right.

Major maclvor, sir?

Major?

Hate to disturb you, sir.

We hardly know what to do here.

This young lady rode up on a horse.

Says she's morna dabney, sir.

We don't see how this could rightly be,

but we thought we'd better call you.

That'll be all, lieutenant.

Yes, sir.

Send some coffee in.

Yes, sir.

This can't be happening.

Why can't it?

How on earth could you get here?

I rode. Didn't you hear the man say?

Morna, you're walking.

Of course I am. There's nothing the matter with me.

Who came with you?

Nobody.

Can you think of anyone in my family,

who would be likely to bring me here?

How long have you known I was here?

I always know where you are.

I do it by voodoo.

There always was kind of a magic link between you and me.

Have you forgotten that?

Sir, we've got a kind of a puzzlement out here.

Tell him, corporal.

Well, sir, we shot us a bushwhacker up the road

that killed one of our pickets,

and he turns out to be an Indian.

Indian? Yes, sir.

I'll be right out.

Called me outside for something.

I won't be gone long.

I thought the Indians were neutral, sir.

They are.

Is captain Saunders in his quarters?

Yes, sir.

Put the Indian in one of the tents.

Take him to number three!

I had to borrow one of your blankets.

I'll take it.

Yes, sir.

I'm very glad your leg is well, morna.

Oh, it's fine.

See?

Just like the other one.

If only I'd...

If only you'd known that.

Is that what you mean?

I think you better tell me why your father sent you here.

Nobody sent me.

And if you'd ridden 20 miles in the rain to see me,

I wouldn't ask who sent you.

I'm sorry.

There are some things it's no use even thinking about anymore.

You mean ll've wasted my ride?

Oh, Clay.

Clay.

Hyah!

What's that?

What's happening out there?

Oh, some supply wagons coming in probably.

Clay, is there anything on earth that will save my people?

If your father will surrender the valley...

No dabney ever surrenders.

That is, except me.

I should have waited.

I know that now...

Yes, you should have.

Now that you're here in my arms again.

What's the matter?

I was thinking about aven.

Oh?

And Alexander wouldn't like it, either, would he?

No.

Keith wouldn't like it.

He wouldn't like it at all.

You're in love with him, aren't you?

If I loved him, would I be here?

Yes, if you wanted to bargain for his neck.

I don't have much to bargain with, Clay.

I gave you my love once.

That was all I had to give.

Maybe we can make time turn back.

I'd give anything to be able to do that.

Do you ever think of the house we started to build?

It seems so long ago,

yet I can close my eyes

and see the iron lace you brought from New Orleans

to put around the porch.

I can see the shadows it threw,

like flower shadows on your face.

And it was such a dear face to me then.

Hurry up, men!

Break open those cases and get your guns!

Bruce, keep out enough cases for the men down below!

Right!

Now let those johnnies come!

Let's not be overanxious about it, hoab.

Where's tishomingo?

Oh, he's out scouting.

Now get that powder under cover as soon as you can!

Anyway, it won't be much longer

till the fate of this valley will be decided.

Just to make sure it's decided in our favor,

maybe we better get the reverend to say a prayer.

All I can say is god help us.

Meantime, we'd better see that each man has a gun.

Clay.

Clay?

What are you doing?

It's time for me to go.

Oh, it stopped raining.

I'm glad we got some rest.

I was so knocked out, I was seeing double.

Now what's got into you?

Clay, I want my horse.

What for?

When the sun comes up, you can have a good breakfast,

and take your time...

Time is what I came for,

but now there's been enough.

I'm going back.

You can't go back there.

I don't know what all you cared about in that valley,

but whatever it was, you'll never find it there again.

I had to accept all that.

You're much better off where you are.

I know he'll never...

None of them will ever look at me again,

but it was the only way in the world for you to be beaten.

Beaten? Yes, beaten.

A few hours ago, you could have torn that valley apart.

They're ready for you now.

Oh, is that how you fooled yourself?

Why, you were all that saved me.

I held you here.

All my father needed was a few hours' delay.

Was it?

Why do you think I didn't question you?

The mere fact that you were here told me

that a surprise attack would be blown to rags.

So I went out and called it off.

Well, at least your surprise is ruined.

Fortunately, I have another surprise.

My heavy guns have gone up.

We won't move out of the woods at all

until every stick of their defense is hammered down flat.

I don't believe you.

You heard the caissons roll out, remember?

They ought to be there by now.

Sorry I was unable to fall in with your little plan

to slaughter my troops.

Quite a murderous scheme, wasn't it?

But it threw away the only chance your people ever had.

You still want to go back?

Anything yet? Nothing.

It's deadly quiet.

Yeah, too quiet.

Where in the devil is tishomingo?

I don't understand this at all.

Keith?

Get away from that house and get in the trenches!

There goes your valley.

She sold us out.

She sold us out to maclvor.

What are you talking about?

I wish she'd died the day she was born!

I should have strangled her in her cradle!

What do you mean? May she rot!

Get out of here!

All of ya, get out of my valley!

Get out of here! Keith: Hoab!

Keith, listen to me!

Morna went to maclvor to gain time for us!

When? When did she go? Last night.

Tishomingo rode out to stop her.

I know now that he's dead.

Why didn't you tell me?

We were afraid nothing would have held you

if you knew where she was.

We've got to get these men out of here.

We'll fall back to the swamps.

The woods are full of rifles.

They'll be slaughtered if we pull them out!

They'll be slaughtered if we stay!

We'll use smoke for cover.

Set fire to everything that'll burn and smudge it!

Send the word down to Bruce! Right!

Follow me, you! Come on, you!

Captain, lieutenant,

take your men into their positions.

As soon as we break through the gap,

follow the orders given you last night.

You understand them?

Yes, sir, we're to follow the ridges

and envelope the main house. Correct.

Destroy everything as you go!

Elevate three degrees.

Get some of that tar, quint, on the outside.

My foot! It's caught!

Get out, quint.

Fall back to the swamp! Run for the swamp!

Run for the swamp!

Get up! Get up quick, fall back to the swamp.

Go on now, run!

They're moving out under that smoke.

Pass the word to advance.

Artillery!

Increase elevation to cover advance.

Yes, sir!

Hurry it up!

Run till you hit the pines!

Run for it!

I'll find those guns.

I can hold this valley till kingdom come.

Come on now! Run for it!

Rally to Lebanon! Rally to Lebanon!

Fight for your freedom!

Fight for your right to work in peace!

To the top!

This is my valley.

No one can dictate to me here!

I stand on my rights!

No one can dictate to hoab dabney!

I am the south!

I declare Lebanon valley a free independent state!

Ambush 'em! That's it!

We'll ambush 'em! March on Jackson!

Fall in, men! Follow me!

Whoa!

Whoa! Ho!

Come on!

Bruce, keep moving into the swamp!

All right, you men, let's go!

All right! All right, spread out now, men,

and take cover!

Go over there!

Right! To the right!

Keith! Keith! Back over in there!

Where's pa?

I don't know!

Get your men under cover! Hurry it up!

You! Go back and watch that road!

Hurry!

Halt!

Sergeant, take a detail of men and burn this place down!

Get some gunpowder and blast that tree out of there!

Yes, sir!

What do you make of this lack of resistance, major?

We'll find 'em soon enough.

Troops comin' up the lower road!

Take cover.

Don't fire until you're told and be ready to fall back!

Bruce, pass that word along. Get down!

Firel

Mount! Mount!

Forward!

Fall back! Fall back!

Now go around there.

Forward!

Firel

Fall back!

No! No, we got 'em!

Turn! Turn!

No, Bruce, no! Fall back!

Let's get into it!

Hoab!

Hoab, get down!

Get down!

Bruce!

Bruce!

Bruce, what happened?

Bruce!

Fall back! Man: Fall back!

Fall back quick!

Fall back!

Hoab, get under cover quick!

Bruce is dead! Can't help him now!

He's dead!

Get back here!

Stay low!

Comb them all out!

Get every one of them!

Hoab! Stay here and don't move!

Go on, take him.

What about the soldiers?

They're pulling out.

They won't bother with what's left of us.

Be careful of his left side.

Dabby: Miss shellie, it's Mr. Hoab!

Get out, you children! Get out!

I'll take him!

We got any horses left?

They're over there.

Easy does it.

Easy, Mr. hoab!

Oh! Easy.

Get his coat off.

We're beaten, shellie. We're beaten.

The valley is gone.

It doesn't matter.

Keith told me kirkland is dead,

and tishomingo and quint.

Don't try to talk.

Dabby, hold his arm down tight.

Shellie...

Shellie, Bruce is dead, too.

My baby! My baby!

Dabby, get me some hot water.

Dabby: Get out of here, you children!

Stay out before I take a stick to you!

And you, too, you know what's good for ya!

Get on out of here and stay...

Dabby, hurry up with the hot wat...

You!

Hoab: You!

I hoped and prayed I'd never lay eyes on you again

as long as I lived!

Shellie: Hoab, be still!

I swore I'd kill you with my own hands if I did.

You've destroyed us all,

even your own brother!

There isn't a clean drop of blood in your whole body!

Get out of my sight!

Get out!

Just a minute.

I hope you're not dying,

because I'm gonna put that down your throat

whether you're dying or not.

I'll deal with my own...

You'll deal with me.

Nobody threw this valley away or got anybody killed but you.

The whole thing was a murderous piece of arrogance

to begin with.

Then why didn't you get out?

Because I loved her.

Not because of you, or your valley, or anything else.

And I never loved her as much as I do right now.

Shellie: Morna, come back!

She's not going any place until she goes with me.

The only decent and heroic thing

in this whole rotten business

was that girl's effort to save you.

And why she bothered, I'll never know.

Keith: Now what's the matter with you?

You believed in me.

You said you believed in me.

Well, I can always take it back, you know.

Oh, Keith.

Everything's gone.

Just everything.

What are you talking about?

Huh!

The valley still has soll, hasn't it?

And it has timber.

That's all it had when your grandfather first came here.

He built the rest of it.

All right, we'll rebuild it.

You take that old tree of Sam's.

There's nothing but a stump there now.

That tree has a tap root that's as deep in the ground

as the tree was tall.

It can be smashed by cannons, split by lightning.

It can be chopped up and the pieces burned.

But it'll always grow again.

It'll keep on growing again a hundred times,

because the tap root's there.

And someday, when that tree's big enough again,

we'll carve a new inscription on its trunk.

Keith: All the land that can be seen from this tree

is the property of Sam dabney,

and his children,

and his children's children,

so long as this tap root lives.
