(ID reader beeping)

- You know you have a payment coming right up soon.

- Yeah, I know.

- Because if you sign up for our automatic withdrawals,

then you wouldn't need all that reminding.

- I know.

- So, are you gonna sign up or?

- No, I'll just take this one and be on my way, please.

(light dramatic music)

(USB stick beeping)

(USB stick chiming)

- Payment in two weeks.

(footsteps thudding)

(Jude groaning) (suspenseful music)

- Hey, I'm so sorry.

You know, I should really watch where I'm going.

- It's okay, I was looking at my phone anyways.

- Oh, well, you know what?

Don't worry about it.

These days we all live in a virtual reality or world

or whatever you wanna say it.

You okay?

Why are you looking at me like that?

- I just had a deja vu moment.

- Oh, well, you know, it happens to all of us.

What can you say?

Um, so, my name's Jude.

- Mary. - Mary?

Ah, I like that name.

You know, like, very biblical.

- Sorry, my name is actually Sarah.

- Um...

Yeah, are you sure? - Yeah.

It's just reflex I have to give fake names to people.

- Okay, okay. - Strangers.

- Well, you know what?

As a pretty girl walking these streets,

I completely understand that, you know?

But okay, wait, wait, wait,

so how come you changed your name with me?

- I don't know.

Maybe there's something about you that says charming.

- Oh, it's the smile, that's what it is.

It's the smile, isn't it? - Mm hm.

- Uh huh. (both chuckling)

Okay, well, anyways, Mary or Sarah I guess we should say,

how about you know, this charming stranger

takes you out for lunch?

(Sarah sighs) Okay, well,

you know, don't do me like that.

You got something else to do.

I understand. - No, it's, it's all right.

- Okay, well, that's terrific.

How about say, 12 o'clock at Stacy's?

- Sounds good, stranger.

- Okay, awesome.

Well, I will, I will see you there.

Nice to meet you.

Ah, that's nice.

(sirens wailing)

- Uh, are you forgetting something?

- Uh, oh.

(Sarah giggling) Can I get your phone number?

- Yeah, okay. (both laughing)

- Okay, just give me...

Okay, so what is it?

- 555-1287.

- 1287. - Yep.

- Okay, I'm gonna message you right now just to make sure,

you know, I got you and I don't have to leave you again.

- Okay.

- Okay.

Ah, there you go.

You got it? (phone dinging)

- Got it. - Okay, awesome.

I will, I will now see you later, okay?

- Okay. - Have a good day.

- No black time. - Hey, I'll be on time.

No black time for you, so just, just...

I will see you later. - See you.

(faucet squeaking) (water trickling)

(Sarah sighs)

(dramatic music)

(upbeat groovy music)

(Sarah sighs)

- Good morning, fine people of Winnipeg.

It's your boy, DJ Steve, in the house and I am here

with the lovely, beautiful Miss Hagar,

star of the upcoming TV show "Ladies in Paris."

Miss Hagar, how are you doing this morning?

- I'm great, how are you?

- I honestly couldn't be better.

Now, before we delve into your new show,

there is a question that's on everybody's minds

that I've been pressured to ask, so I gotta ask.

It's been one year today since the recovery of your son.

How are you feeling?

- Well, you know, I am just still so filled with gratitude.

You know, there were so many people

who contributed to me getting my baby back;

the police, the community, (dramatic music)

I couldn't have done it without those people.

And to the woman who took my son, you know,

I'm just glad to hear that she's in a facility,

she's getting help.

I hope she accepts full- (dramatic buzzing)

(Sarah gasping)

I can't imagine what she was going through

to do something like that.

(suspenseful music)

(light music)

(car beeping)

(heels clicking)

- Hello. - Oh, wow.

- [Waitress] Hey, ma'am, can I get you something to drink?

- Um, just iced tea. - Okay, coming right up.

- Thank you.

- Okay, three things really.

First, you look great. - Thank you.

- Two, I can't believe you showed up because after that

whole Mary thing I wasn't really sure what was going on.

- Mm hm. - And number three,

iced tea is disgusting, just so you know.

- Oh, really?

- Uh- - Wine before 12 o'clock.

- Hey, this helps with the edge and I got a lotta edge,

and you honestly should try it too

because you have a lot of edge as well.

- Oh, I am very well relaxed.

Thank you. - Okay, okay.

- So, what's your story?

- What's my story?

Just like that, you're not gonna ask...

Just right into it? - I meant, okay.

- Okay, let's just- - You know what?

- I'll tell you.

Let's just skip everything.

I'll tell you my story. - Mm hm.

- My name is Jude.

A funny thing, actually, well it's not that funny,

but I heard around the office today that some of the guys

started calling my Judas, believe it or not.

I guess you can't make everybody happy.

You do a few things and you get names like that, so-

- Oh, Judas, like the betrayer?

- Yeah, it's not great- - Huh, I wonder why.

- Okay, just, let's just move on.

(Sarah giggling) Okay, I'm...

- Okay, okay. - Anyways, Jude.

That's the name, just Jude. - Okay.

- No matter what anybody calls me.

I am the CTO of Vee Corp.

- CTO? - Yeah, you know,

I oversee all of the software engineer, stuff in, you know-

- I know what a CTO is. - Okay.

- You don't really look like a CTO, but-

- Hey, listen, listen, when you make the money that I do,

you don't wear the suits.

That's all I'm saying. - Oh, bluffing now?

Okay. - Ain't no bluffing here.

But you know, how about you?

What do you do?

- Well, currently I'm unemployed,

but I'm a software engineer.

- A software engineer?

That can't be true.

You're just saying that 'cause I like...

What are the changes of that? - What I just said.

- Really, a software, that's very interesting.

A software engineer, like what are the changes of that?

You know, have you ever thought about applying with us?

- Oh, I did, never heard back.

- No. - Mm hm.

- You know what, let's see why

'cause that's very interesting to me.

So, let me just- - You don't have to though.

- You know what, it's hard times for everybody.

- Okay. - And I just, I wanna see.

You know, if you're really this software-

- Okay. - If you're not just

pullin' my leg 'cause you very may well be doing that.

You know, I'll just find out what happened

and you know, go from there.

Uh...

One sec. - Here you go, ma'am.

- Thank you.

- [Waitress] Would you like something to eat?

- Oh, no, that will be all.

Thank you so much. - Okay then.

- Okay, so I should know in a couple of hours

why Sarah, our software engineer, didn't make it,

if of course you did actually apply.

- Okay. - But until then, you know,

that's me, CTO, you, software, that's just that's great.

It's very interesting, it's very new.

New for me.

So, let's just say, a toast to new and very,

very interesting beginnings.

- Definitely interesting. - Absolutely.

(traffic humming)

(pool balls clinking)

(keyboard clicking)

(Sarah sighs)

(keyboard clicking)

(phone chiming)

(incoming text message dinging)

(outgoing text message whooshing)

(incoming text message dinging)

(Sarah giggling)

(Sarah sighs)

(outgoing text message whooshing)

(light dramatic music)

(doorbell dinging)

- Madam. - You and your wine.

- Oh, come on now.

It's the perfect time to have some.

- Mm, come in. (Jude chuckling)

(door latch clicking)

(Jude sighs)

- Hey, so, you know what, I did some digging,

and I found out why you didn't get the job

with us at Vee Corp. - Okay.

- Basically, yeah, it came down to you and there was another

applicant and you know, 50/50 luck of the draw.

They ended up getting it. - And I lucked out.

- You know what?

I probably shouldn't tell you this,

but really the company equity policy,

you know it says that there can only be one black developer

on the team at all time, believe it or not.

- Really? - So, yeah.

Probably had something to do

with why you didn't get the job.

But, you know. - Oh, well.

- Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

I actually did find something actually rather interesting

when I was doing a little bit

more digging. - What?

- You were a little mischievous, weren't you?

(Sarah clears throat) (Jude chuckling)

- [Sarah] How so?

(Jude chuckling)

- Well, your signature.

- Signature? - Yeah, your signature.

- Oh.

- ASCII art for the um, is it the middle finger?

- Okay, how did you know? (both laughing)

- How did I know?

Listen here, sweetheart.

I am the CTO of a multimillion dollar company.

- Okay. - If I can't decrypt

and encrypted Hash-4 token, then really what am I here for?

I'm the man around these parts.

- Mm hm, okay. - Mm hm.

- Well, I'm glad you enjoyed my little sense of humor.

- Girl, who says I enjoy it?

- You're practically blushing and you're black.

That says a lot.

- You're practically blushing.

(Jude chuckling)

- Would you like anything to drink?

- Oh, I want my big old bottle of wine.

Poor me a glass. - You're, you're, I can't.

(eerie music)

What now? - Nothing.

I just find you interesting to watch.

- Mm, really?

Okay. (Jude chuckling)

- Yeah, but you know, tell me a little bit

more about yourself.

You ever been married?

You have any kids around here that I should know about?

- Uh, no, no, there've been no kids.

- So, real nice.

An eligible bachelorette.

- [Sarah] Who said I was looking?

- [Jude] Oh, girl.

You don't gotta be looking to be a bachelorette now.

- Yeah, but you have to be looking to be

an eligible bachelorette. - True, true.

I will give you that.

(Sarah sighs)

Hey. - Hm?

- Let me ask you something.

- [Sarah] Okay.

Mm hm.

- If you had the chance to get rid of the SIN virus-

(Sarah gasps)

Would you take it?

(Sarah sighs)

- How, how did you know?

- Listen, I can't lie.

When we bumped into each other I saw the M-5 bottle.

Hey, hey, it's okay.

(Sarah scoffs)

- No, it's not okay.

Having a disease to which your company

profits millions of dollars.

Just so we can live again for another week.

- Listen, I know it's not great.

It's not a great situation at all,

and that's why I have been working tirelessly

to find something to change all of it.

- How so?

- Okay, well, obviously the company would never approve

this ever 'cause this is how we make all of the money,

but I've secretly been working on

an R and D department, okay?

And we're doing everything we possibly we can,

not to just help you live longer,

but to absolutely cure it 100%.

No more lifelines, gone for good.

- Oh, let me guess?

And you need a guinea pig?

- You know, even though you're putting it so eloquently,

it's not like that, but we need somebody to try it, yes.

- No.

- Sarah, please.

Sarah!

- Was this all planned?

Have you been following me?

- No, I haven't been following you.

I bumped into you today.

That's why this is happening.

No other reason, okay?

That's why we're here.

The only reason I said anything 'cause I saw the M-5 bottle,

I wanted to help.

- Yeah, right.

(Sarah scoffs)

- Sarah, this right here, this is the answer.

This can help us all.

Imagine the global economic impact that this will have.

This right here, to help save if not just,

not just prolong something,

but to cure the SIN virus for good.

- Your company will be ruined if it works.

- That's perfectly fine by me.

- Can't be serious.

- Sarah, my parents died to the SIN virus.

I have worked for 10 years,

10 years to get to where I am today.

Now that I'm here,

after all that I went through to get here,

all the obstacles I had to overcome to get here,

10 years, nothing in the world

is gonna stop me from changing everything.

And you can help me.

Will you help me?

- How does it work?

- It's simple.

You take this, you put it in a cup of water,

just a few drops.

Down it goes.

- Fine.

(Sarah scoffs)

(dramatic ethereal music)

So, this isn't gonna like speedup

the virus and kill me, right?

(Jude chuckling)

- Well, if it kills you then I'm already a dead man, so.

- Who knows, maybe you have

this Romeo and Juliet thing going on-

- Hey, look, I know it's scary,

but stalling is not gonna help.

So, just drink the damn thing.

(Jude chuckling) (Jude sighing)

- All right, fine.

Bottoms up.

(dramatic music)

Okay, so, how do we know this is working?

- Okay, well, once every 24 hours I'm gonna take samples

of your blood just to make sure everything's good,

there's no irregularities.

(dramatic buzzing)

- [Miss Hagar] To the woman who took my son,

you know, I'm just glad she's in a facility getting help.

I hope she accepts full...

(distorted talking)

(dramatic whooshing)

(light ethereal music)

(computerized whirring)

(Sarah gasping) (phone ringing)

- Hello? (phone beeping)

(phone thudding)

(eerie music)

(egg tapping) (whisk clicking)

(pan sizzling)

(toaster clicking) (pan sizzling)

(toast crunching)

(men harmonizing)

(Jude groaning) (dramatic whooshing)

- No, that's all right.

I was looking at my phone anyways.

- Ah, well, you know what?

Don't worry about it.

These days we all live in a virtual world or reality

or whatever it is anyways, so you know.

Uh, you, you okay?

- [Sarah] Sorry, I just had a deja vu moment.

- Ah, well, you know, it happens to all of us really.

So, don't worry about it.

My name is Jude. - Uh, hm.

(ominous music)

- [Jude] Uh, you okay?

What's going on? - Jude.

- [Jude] Yeah, that's my name.

- You need to come home with me right now.

- Okay, like, I've heard that I'm good looking,

but this is record time even for me, so, maybe-

- I know about your experimental drug trials.

(eerie music)

(Jude sighs)

- Okay, like, I'm sorry, Sarah, but what you're saying

really just isn't making any sense.

- I know.

- The drug is supposed to cure the SIN virus,

not do all of this.

- I know what the drug is supposed to do.

You gave me the formula in a vial

with this liquid black thingie.

I mixed it water and then I asked you

how we were gonna know it was gonna work.

And you said you would take blood samples every 24 hours.

- Okay, that, it's just it's impossible.

It's impossible.

- Am I wrong through? (Jude sighs)

- Oh, my gosh.

Oh, my God, oh.

Okay, okay, wait, wait, wait.

Okay, so if this is really happening,

then let's say you did come back in time.

What else happened?

Like what happened, what happened to me?

Am I okay?

- I don't know.

I've only experienced it from my point of view.

But when I came back,

I came back with all my memories, my mind.

My physical body though, it remained the same.

Just as it was this morning.

It was like just the whole world,

everything had just reset.

It was exactly the same.

- Everything was the same. - You know?

- Everything was the same, but now it's changed.

Like you changed it. - What?

- Everything remained the same until you changed it.

So, I'm guessing the first time we had this conversation

I'm sure I didn't end up in your apartment.

Like I'm sure that's not what happened, right?

- No.

- Great.

- Okay, you know what, let's draw this up.

- Where, where are you going?

- [Sarah] Okay, so this is the original timeline.

- [Jude] Yeah.

- This is when my day started. - Okay.

- [Sarah] This is when I bumped into you.

- Okay. - And here is where

I drank the formula.

Then I came back in time. - Mm hm.

- [Sarah] Went through the day again, bumped into you,

and then the timeline diverged.

Now we're here. - Okay, so,

just so I have this correct.

If we're here right now, right?

Right here. - Uh huh.

- That means that this over here just doesn't exist or?

- [Sarah] Well, then if it did not exist or doesn't exist,

then I wouldn't have been able to travel back,

so then how am I here?

- Oh, my gosh.

Okay, if I understand this correctly and believe me,

I am not saying that I do,

what we have here is two simultaneous timelines

that are running parallel to each other.

- That's the only logical explanation.

(Jude chuckling)

- Logical?

What about this is logical?

What we have here is a multiverse.

We have two separate parallel universes

that are running neck in neck.

(Jude stuttering)

Somehow you, Sarah, have found the way

to jump between both of them.

- Well, technically you created the formula.

I'm just a test subject, so. (Jude chuckling)

- Oh, did I ever.

- Jude. - Yeah?

- There is something I need to tell you.

- Go ahead, anything.

- So, in the other timeline you asked me

if I was married or had any kids and I said no.

Truth is I had a son and I lost him

in an accident a year ago.

- Hey, Sarah, I'm so sorry.

It's okay, I understand why you didn't say anything.

It's perfectly fine.

Sarah, no.

- This might be my only chance of getting him back.

- We can't.

- If there's even a sliver of hope

that I get to have him again, I wanna take it.

- Okay, Sarah, I understand that and it's not fair,

but this is way too dangerous.

We have no idea how this works.

Not at all.

Not at all, we can't jump a whole entire year.

- Probably not, maybe we don't know how it works,

but anything is better than my current situation.

- Okay, hey, hey. - Hey, I trusted you

the first time and now I need you to trust me, okay?

(Jude sighs)

- Okay, okay.

Listen, listen, Sarah, if we do this,

we just can't jump a whole entire year, okay?

We have to do it step-by-step, okay?

So, in doses.

Like maybe we try a day,

then maybe try two days, then three.

Maybe if three works we can jump to seven.

- Yeah, yeah, it makes sense.

- Okay. - Yeah.

- Okay, also, you cannot do this alone.

Do you understand?

I have to come with you.

I have to try it too.

- Wait, but will it have any effect on you

if you don't have the virus?

- Nothing makes any sense at this point, okay?

We just have to do it, we have to do this together.

As long as we're together we'll be okay.

- Okay. - No matter what happens.

- Okay, um, okay.

- [Jude] Okay.

(phone ringing)

(Sarah gasps) (dramatic music)

- Hello? - You are playing

a dangerous game.

- What, who is this?

- [Man] You are playing a dangerous game

and there's no way for you to win.

- Don't call this number again!

(phone thudding)

(bells chiming)

(muffled talking)

(finger tapping)

(woman singing)

- In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

- Bless me Father, for I have sinned.

It's been uh...

40 hours since my last confession.

- It gets too often, child.

You can't be that bad.

- Please, I...

Just need to get this off my chest.

(priest sighs)

I haven't been thinking about him as much as I should.

I feel like I'm losing memory of him.

And I feel bad.

Oh and I hacked into Vee Corp's database again

to renew my two week subscription.

- I ask that you do five "Hail Mary's" and penance.

And God in his infinite mercy will forgive your sins,

but you must open your heart

and receive his mercy, Sarah. - Yes, Father.

- Thank the Lord for he is good.

- And his mercy endures forever.

- You may go, child.

- Um, Father. - Yes?

- Why is it so hard to accept forgiveness?

- I will meet up with you after you've done your penance.

(church choir harmonizing)

(priest sighs)

I was once stationed in Sierra Leone several years ago.

The diamond wars have left many people as amputees.

Because the rebels who were responsible were mostly kids,

and adults on heavy drugs,

and they were more interested in torture than death.

So, when the war ended, these kids were shown what they had

done to their own people, their fellow brothers and sisters.

And upon seeing this, they were extremely remorseful.

The afflicted forgave the lads

and welcomed 'em back into the community.

And most of 'em in fact, were rehabilitated.

But there was this one young man, Joseph,

who had killed his mother and his sister.

Despite every effort to bring him back into the community

and even after his own father had forgiven him

and showed him kindness, the boy,

this young man couldn't forgive himself and his actions.

And he drowned himself in the river.

You see, the devil uses any means to keep us away from God.

God's mercy is infinite.

He's always ready to forgive as long as we're ready

to accept it and willing to move on.

(traffic humming)

(text message dinging)

(dramatic ethereal music)

(Sarah sighs)

- Ready?

- No, just wait.

Okay, just so we have this right.

This right here, it will take us back.

- Yeah, to this morning.

- It'll take us back to this morning, okay.

And I'll keep all of my memories you said?

All of 'em, I don't wanna forget anything-

- Yeah.

- I have an important job, you know,

so I can't forget stuff.

- You will have your memory. - Okay.

- Can we drink it now?

- Okay, just, okay wait, wait, okay.

How about I'll call you right in the morning

'cause I didn't call you in the morning this time.

That way if I call you, you know for sure it works.

- Sounds good, yeah. - Okay.

- Okay. - Well, here it goes.

(dramatic ethereal music)

(light dramatic music) (wind whistling)

(phone ringing)

(Sarah panting)

- [Sarah] Jude?

- [Man] It is impossible.

- What? - It is impossible,

and you will die in the attempt.

- [Sarah] You again?

- [Man] If it were possible,

how come this conversation is different?

We have had no other interaction besides this call,

yet here we are.

- How many times will I tell you

to stop calling this number?

Try pranking someone else.

Jeez.

(phone ringing)

Hello?

Hello, anybody there? (Jude chuckling)

- [Jude] Oh, my gosh, it worked.

- Yes! - I can not believe it.

I'm officially a time traveler.

- Time sleeper. - What?

- Time sleeper, that's what I'm calling it.

- [Jude] Hm, sounds kinda lame.

- Um, it is time travel by sleeping.

What else would you call it?

- [Jude] How about this, time travel.

- [Sarah] Please, that's just too common and lame.

So, what's the next step?

- [Jude] Well, now we need to try a three day dosage.

See, we need to verify that one dosage

that maps out to one day, so that we can precisely

calculate what a year's dosage would be.

- [Sarah] Okay, sounds good.

I am so excited.

- [Jude] Okay, I'll meet up with you later.

- [Sarah] Okay and hey, Jude?

- [Jude] What's up?

- [Sarah] Thanks.

See you later.

(Sarah sighs)

(water trickling)

(birds chirping)

- This your favorite spot?

- Yeah, I sometimes come here to just be.

- Yeah.

Hey, Sarah?

- Yeah?

- What happened to your son?

(ominous music)

- It was an accident.

It was all my fault.

- Hey. - No.

I don't wanna talk about it. - It, it's okay, it's okay.

- You have the SIN virus, don't you?

(Jude sighs)

(Jude chuckling)

- How did you know?

- It's pretty obvious.

Chief technology officer of a billion dollar corporation

researching a drug that could potentially ruin his company.

Will it save a girl he just met and save the world.

- Yeah, yeah, I do.

My mother when she was pregnant with me she had the virus

and the doctors all told her, they all said you know,

"Just get rid of it, get rid of the baby because

you're gonna have to raise him with the SIN virus.

Do you really put that kind of life on a child?"

But she did it anyways.

She loved me enough and here I am.

- Here you are.

(Jude sighs)

- Here I am.

- Life is unfair.

Terrible things happen to undeserving people.

- Well, (sighs).

I wouldn't really say that.

What is it that they say?

That the race is not to the swift,

nor the battle to the strong,

nor bread to the wise man,

nor riches to men of understanding.

- Nor favor to men of skill,

but time and chance happens to them all.

- There you go.

- Wanna go for a walk?

- Sure. - Okay.

(Sarah sighs) - Hey, wait for me.

(Jude chuckling)

(water trickling) (gentle music)

(trees rustling)

- When we were young, my mother used to take us

through the woods and force us to pray the rosary.

- Something tells me that probably

wasn't your most favorite part of the day.

- I didn't really like it at first,

but then there's just something about the calm of nature

and its ambience, combined with prayer it just brings

a certain peace that I can't explain.

Anyway, by the time we go one lap around the forest

we would be done and she would say, "Good children."

(both chuckling)

Ah, and then we'd just scurry off

and go cause mischievous stuff with other kids.

- Oh, why am I not surprised?

- Okay, whatever. (Jude chuckling)

- So, do you still talk to your mom?

- Oh, no.

She didn't really approve of my relationships.

- Yeah. - Having a child

out of wedlock and after the accident I just...

- Hey. (gentle music)

- Whoa.

(Sarah sighs)

(Jude chuckling)

(birds chirping) (gentle music continues)

(Sarah sighs)

This was the perfect hiding spot.

Could stay here for hours on end.

- Yeah, you know it really does seem like the perfect place

to just come and escape all of reality.

Oh, not to ruin the moment or anything,

but while we're here we do have a bit of a problem.

- What?

- Well, you see, the drug contains an ingredient

called Ebony-One and- (Sarah laughing)

- What?

The names you people come up with.

- Okay, anyways, to get it in small dosages isn't really

a problem, but if we want a three day dosage,

that is gonna be very tricky.

And there's really only one way

that we can get it without being detected.

(stairs creaking) (Jude sighs)

Well, you've done it, Sarah.

Welcome to the man cave.

- Very original. - Eh, you know.

- [Sarah] Sweet!

- Oh.

- Okay, so first thing I need to do is login

to the terminal with your credentials.

(Jude chuckling) - Yeah, not so fast.

Take this, girl. - Hm?

- [Jude] Take it.

That should contain the connection that you need

to the terminal as well as my login credentials.

There you go. - So you cannot even trust me

with your username and password?

- Girl, you know we ain't even that close.

(both laughing)

- Okay. - Ah, man.

Okay, got it?

- Yeah. - Okay, you see that command

file right there? - Yeah.

- [Jude] Okay, you gotta open it.

(light dramatic music) - I'm in, now what?

- Okay, this is where I make the orders.

It's really a simple command and no one takes notice

because it gets swept up in all the excess logs.

However, three doses- - Six doses.

- Ah, crap, yeah. - You're coming too, right?

- Yeah, you're right.

Um, okay, so six doses, that is 600 milligrams of E-One.

Yeah, okay, there is no way that's not gonna

get flagged in the system.

No way.

- It's simple then, I'll just have

to make the order anonymously.

- Okay, well, if you're gonna do it anonymously...

Uh, that would remove my account, so I'd be okay,

but still I wouldn't be the culprit,

but they'd be checking all over the place.

So, still really it's just too risky.

- Uh, unless I'll have to turn off the logs,

make the order and then turn them back on.

- I like where your head is at,

but the system processes thousands of orders

per minute, just thousands.

Shutting off the logs is really not a good idea.

- The log system runs on multiple servers, right?

- Yeah. - Okay, um...

I only need to shutdown the one

that's gonna process your order.

- Ah, you know, good thought, really smart, except-

- You don't know which server would process ours.

- Hold up, hold up. - Yeah.

- We can query the database for the E-1 warehouse,

then cross reference the warehouse

database with server locations.

- Hm, smart. - Oh, you know me.

(light dramatic music) (keyboard clicking)

- [Sarah] Okay, let's see here.

Vc-west. - Oh, there you go.

That's it, my African queen.

- Okay, first let's open up the logs.

(computer beeping)

Whoa, you weren't joking about

the orders processed per minute.

- Girl, I don't kid.

- Okay, now to shut it down.

- Good luck.

I suspect you literally have a minute

before my phone gets blasted with calls.

(Sarah sighs)

- Okay, all right, let's do this.

- [Jude] Oh, cracking the fingers.

(Jude chuckling) (Sarah sighs)

Let's see how good you are, software engineer.

- Mm hm.

All right.

(computer beeping)

I'm ready. - Okay, navigate to system.

- Yeah. - Transactions,

and then orders. (keyboard clicking)

- Done. - Okay, I am just gonna

pull up the codes here.

- You should have that already, Jude.

- Yeah, okay, okay, sorry, sorry, sorry.

One sec. (Sarah scoffs)

Okay, uh, okay, so E-1.

Got it, got it right here.

Okay, so this is what you got, you ready?

Here's what you wanna type in. - Mm hm.

- Mk ord space um, okay,

eb1 dash 247.

- Okay.

Okay, that's it? - Not yet, not even.

Now we just need to type, okay, hold on.

Give, give the amount.

So, okay, type 600.

- And 600. (light dramatic music)

- Okay, yeah, yeah, that looks good.

Run it, run it, run it, run it.

(computer beeping)

- Shit! - Hey, language, language.

Of course.

Ah, dang it, it can't log the order

'cause the login server is down.

- How did you not know this was going to happen?

- Just, sorry, hold it, hold it.

But wait, I should be able to pass it through.

I can pass it through, I can pass it through.

- I think you should drive. - Okay, okay.

Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.

First, I need to erase the log attempt

from the orders table.

Okay, meanwhile I need to query the admin table

for a bypass code under ID 12.

- Okay. - Okay.

- Okay, what am I looking for? - Orders, something like that.

- Found it, ready? - Okay, yeah.

(phone ringing) Oh, dammit.

It's IT ops and they have indeed noticed.

- I'm ready to go, Jude.

- Okay, one sec.

Okay.

I am ready, ready.

- LGVMMC- - Okay, hold on.

(Jude scoffs) - MMC, okay, okay, go.

I got it, you're good.

(phone ringing) Okay.

Ah, crap that's my phone.

Sarah, I gotta get it.

- No, you don't, switch.

(Jude groans)

(light dramatic music)

(computer beeping)

It worked! - Yes, yes, yes.

Okay, turn on those logs ASAP.

- Wait, what about the order attempt log?

(Jude groaning)

- Okay, you're right.

Clear that quick, clear it quick.

- All right. (light dramatic music)

Done, logging you out.

- I, I got to take this.

I gotta take it.

Oh, hey, Umar, my man, what's going on?

Oh, yeah, you know.

Oh, just taking a shower.

About to take a shower anyways.

I had quite the day.

(Sarah sighs)

You know what, man?

It must be one of those weird anomalies.

It happens every now and then.

But no, thanks for calling me and letting me know, you know?

It's good you're a good man, man.

You're a good man, man.

Yeah, I like that.

Yeah, okay, anyways if anything happens just let me know

and we'll go from there.

Okay.

Yeah, I'll see you, man.

You take it easy.

Okay, okay, peace.

(hands clapping)

- That was pretty badass though.

Like one of those sci-fi movies.

- Sci-fi movies, oh Lord, you can say that again.

(Jude chuckling)

- So, now what?

- Um, you know what, orders should get,

you know, it should get to the lab today,

and I'll pick it up tonight.

That simple.

- Awesome.

(Sarah sighs)

Hm, I just realized I hadn't met you three days ago.

I wonder how this is gonna play out.

- Yeah, you know, we wouldn't have had each other's

phone numbers stored in our phones, so.

- Hm. - Yeah, but don't worry.

I'll remember you.

Will you remember me?

Numbers of course. - Yeah.

(Jude chuckling) You're silly.

- All right, then, well I guess will talk

to you three days ago.

- Wait a sec. - What?

- We wouldn't actually be going back three days, would we?

- Um, well, why not?

Oh, yeah, wait, okay.

Yeah, um, because one dose that takes you back

to the morning of the very same day.

- Exactly.

- Okay, well, then let me just.

Oh, yeah, so today is the 18th.

So, three doses should take us right back to

the morning of the 16th. - 16th, yep.

- Okay, okay. - Sounds good.

- Okay, well you know what to do.

- You ready? - Here we go.

Bottoms up!

(Sarah groaning)

(dramatic music)

(phone ringing)

- [Man] This is your last warning.

Forget the past and make sure-

- [Operator] The number you have dialed

has not been recognized.

Please check the number.

(phone ringing)

- I swear to God.

Hello?

- [Jude] Looks like it worked once again.

- Oh, hey, I just tried calling you

and it said your number didn't exist.

- [Jude] Yeah, I just remembered I got a new phone contract.

Well, I got a new phone contract tomorrow.

This is weird. - Okay, so, we have done

the three day test and I think

we're ready to go back for real.

- [Jude] Well...

- Come on.

We just did two empirical tests successfully.

I think we're ready.

Hello? - All right, fine.

I'll meet you at the park.

- Okay.

Hey, so, I know I've been putting a lot of pressure on you

and I know you have all the company protocols and stuff,

but this is really important to me.

- You know, I'm not really worried

about company protocols.

At this point you have to know

I've broken basically every single one of them.

It's just, Sarah, I'm so worried about you.

Like, a whole entire year of E-One?

That sorta concentration would

for sure give you an overdose.

- Maybe we can go back a couple of months at a time?

- Ah, it's still a stretch.

Just we only had the product ready for trials about

a week ago and jumping back for a whole month prior

would just do us no good.

- Wait, you've been testing the drug for a week?

- Yeah.

- What happened to the other patients?

(Jude sighs)

Hello?

- They all end up in comas.

- What?

- Yeah. - No, no.

(somber music)

You gave me this drug knowing...

(Jude sighs)

I just, I just need my son back.

(dog barking)

So, what are you gonna do when we get there?

- I don't think I'm gonna go, Sarah.

- Why not?

- Well, going back a whole entire year

would set me back a year of development.

I can't have that.

I really think I should just stay here

and monitor the patients.

You know, just see how everything goes.

Maybe one of them finds a way to,

you know, get outta their coma, jump back.

I should be here for that.

- Oh.

You know, it'd be really hard to convince

you that this works coming from the future.

- You won't find me.

A year ago I was working abroad.

One of our offshore locations.

Heck, I wasn't even CTO yet, not even close.

- Oh.

So, I guess this is goodbye then.

(Jude sighs)

- Sarah.

Listen to me, Sarah.

- What?

- I can't make you any promises.

With that level of E-One concentration in your body,

Sarah...

You could die.

Are you sure that's something you're willing to do?

- I'm sure, 100%.

(footsteps thudding)

(dramatic music) (Sarah panting)

(dramatic whooshing)

(Sarah groaning)

(light buzzing)

(Sarah sighs) (dramatic music)

Oh. (man hushes)

- It's all right.

- Where am I? (man hushes)

- It's all right.

- No, it's not.

Where am I?

- You're in the back of a truck.

- Why? - Because having you laying

unconscious on the side of the street

would look a little suspicious, don't you think?

- Are you actually being sarcastic right now?

- Yes, sorry.

- Yeah, so, what do you want from me?

- [Man] I'm the guy who's been trying to call you.

- You? - Yeah.

- Okay, you know what?

You have gotta stop.

This is a serious stalking offense.

- [Man] I know what it looks like,

but this is just the only way.

- Only way for what?

- [Man] To get you to listen.

- Listen to what?

- [Man] Look, you have to let go of the past.

- Oh, boy, here we go again.

- Listen, this is what we do.

We help liberate people like you

from the bloodthirsty corporations like Vee Corp.

- You can't be serious.

- But I am very serious.

Vee Corp takes psychologically damaged patients from

mental institutions and uses them for their experiments.

- Oh, okay, so me, I'm psychologically damaged?

- Yes.

You got pregnant by your boyfriend.

- Oh, Jesus. - You two broke up.

And he left you with nothing.

Forcing you to rid your child in your accident.

- Okay, that's enough.

- Losing a child triggers something psychologically

in your body, which forced you to take another child

and claim it as your own.

- Stop it! (dramatic music)

(Sarah panting) (man groaning)

(Sarah gasping)

(wind whistling)

(fist knocking)

- Hey, you okay?

- Yeah, I'm fine.

- You know, I've been thinking if I perfect this drug,

there's gonna be all sorts of interesting

moral questions and dilemmas.

- I'm hoping people will like focus on the actual

benefits of the drug, rather than all this ethical bullshit.

(Jude chuckling)

- Well, come on now, when has that ever happened?

Sarah, just because something can be done,

doesn't mean it should be done.

- If it benefits all of mankind and is doable, just do it.

- Do it?

Despite whatever the cost?

- If the end justifies the means, then sure.

- You can't really believe that, Sarah, can you?

- Why not?

- Well, because the means, Sarah,

they can destroy people's lives.

- You say like for all the greatest inventions created

by man, we haven't had to go through several casualties?

- And you're fine with that?

Didn't I hear you say before that you were

a Christian or something like that?

- Are you serious? - What?

- There have been several instances in the bible

where the end justified the means.

- Like what? Go ahead.

- First off, God flooded the entire Earth,

killing every man, woman, child, animal,

with exceptions of those on the ark.

Because mankind had pretty much gone to shit.

(Jude groans) Yep.

God allowed the Israelites to stumble through the desert

for 40 years before reaching the promised land.

And the previous generation, the ones who had actually

been promised freedom and then the land

filled with milk and honey,

they were all pretty much wiped out before the end.

And God allowed his son to go through the brutal torment,

sacrificing his life to save mankind.

Should I go on? - I'm good, thanks.

It's getting a little chilly.

Maybe after that I should make us some tea.

What do you think? - Okay.

- Okay.

(light ethereal music)

(Jude sighs)

Okay, here's that tea as promised.

- Thank you. - That one's yours.

Oh.

(Jude sighs)

You know, we probably should start that E-One transfer.

- Yeah, tomorrow though.

I've had enough action for one day.

- Oh, ain't that the truth.

- Hey. - Hm?

- Do you think one can be redeemed after they've undone

all the harmful things they did?

- Hm, redeemed.

Well, that's interesting.

Redeemed in whose eyes tho?

There's redeemed in the eyes of the person

that you've offended,

there's redeemed in your own eyes,

and ultimately there's redeemed in...

- The eyes of God.

- Yeah.

(light ethereal music)

(shower water splashing)

(light ethereal music continues)

(phone dinging)

(bus engine rumbling)

(Jude sighs) - Hey.

- Hey.

Okay, you ready?

- As ready as I can be.

- Okay, this one's a little bit tricky.

Just letting you know.

- Why isn't it the same process as before?

- Well, on the computer side everything's the same,

but no, I have to physically go and get it there

to make sure nobody else gets it.

You know, 'cause the delivery guys are there first.

So, it's the safest thing for me to do.

- Don't you have someone on the inside you can trust?

- You know, I thought about it and really at that level

of security level, there's no clearance for anybody.

So, it's just safer if I do it, you know?

I'm the CTO, I go there, everything's fine.

I can override things that they can't override, so-

- Okay, okay.

Then I guess it's fine. - Okay, well, cool.

I'll see you in a bit.

- Where are you going?

- Well, I have to make sure that I'm actually there.

You know, thus anything that comes in to Vee Corp,

the security guys, you know the delivery dispensers,

they get it first.

So, I have to go there with my special override,

and I can override these things.

- Can't we just do that remotely?

- No, no, we can't.

I have to physically, manually enter in the thing.

- Well, I'm coming with you. - Okay, just no.

We can't have two people.

I know you wanna help, but it's better if I do it myself,

so just relax.

Stay there.

- I don't think it's wise. - Okay, you know, Sarah,

stressful time, but just relax, okay?

Do you trust me? - Yes.

- Okay, well then don't worry.

Let me do my job.

I'll be on the phone with you the entire time.

Just relax, okay?

- Okay, fine. - Okay, I'll see you later.

Okay?

- Okay.

(eerie music)

(phone ringing)

Hello?

- [Jude] Hey, what's up?

- Ah, you know, just chilling.

- [Jude] Were you sleeping?

- Ah, kinda.

Took you a minute to get there.

Oh, by the way, I also raided your fridge.

I kinda cleared out all your snacks, so.

- [Jude] All good, Sarah.

Ready to go?

- Oh, one second. (light dramatic music)

Okay, I'm ready.

- [Jude] Do it.

(Sarah humming)

- Shutting down server log.

Heading to orders.

(keyboard clicking) (Sarah humming)

- [Jude] You know you don't have to give me

the play by play, right?

- It keeps me calm.

Okay, I'm here.

Mk_ord...

What's the amount again?

- Oof. - What?

- [Jude] Just realized it's been two days

since I last calculated the amount.

- Yeah, but then we went back three days.

- [Jude] We went back two days, actually.

Just check the calendar quickly.

- Uh, 17th.

- [Jude] So, it's exactly one year from now then?

- Yeah.

- [Jude] Okay, one sec.

(Sarah sighs) (light dramatic music)

- Hurry up, Jude.

- [Jude] Almost there.

I got it. - Okay.

- [Jude] 36600.

Don't forget to override the order with the force option.

- Too late. - Sarah!

- No, just hush for a second.

(keyboard clicking) (light dramatic music)

- Oh, no. - What?

- I was wondering what the movement

and the excitement here was all about.

IT ops, they've traced you.

They've deployed security- - Not uh, not when I'm

this close. - To your location.

You need to leave right now.

- I just, I just need to focus for a minute.

- [Jude] Sarah, this is serious.

(computer beeping)

- Enter. (computer beeping)

- Okay.

(light switches clicking) (suspenseful music)

(light dramatic music)

(suspenseful music)

(phone ringing)

(hand slapping)

(dramatic music)

(Sarah grunting) (man groaning)

(ominous music)

(car engine rumbling)

(Sarah panting)

(light music)

(men harmonizing)

(bus engine rumbling)

- Oh, my gosh, Sarah!

(Jude sighs)

Are you all right?

You look exhausted.

- I'm fine.

The important thing is we got it, right?

- Yeah, everything's ready to go on the table over here.

Come on. - Okay.

I'm gonna take a shower.

- Yeah, okay, just make it fast, okay?

(Jude sighs) (eerie music)

(Jude sighs)

- What's wrong?

- Sarah...

- Hey, just tell me as it is, okay?

(Jude sighs)

- You should really sit down for this.

Just here, sit down.

- Okay.

- Sarah.

- Yeah?

- I've done some more digging and I've looked at your file.

- Okay and?

- Sarah, you don't have much time left.

- What do you mean?

I've been taking M-5 steady for two years,

I haven't missed a single- - It's all, it's all a lie.

Sarah, it's a lie.

Okay, there is no such thing.

It's a placebo.

The drug, the M-5 drug, it doesn't help with the SIN virus.

It doesn't help at all!

- No, the ads on TV, the people they-

- No, lies, Sarah. - They were cured.

- Everything, everything is a lie.

Money, money pays for everything.

It pays for people who have diseases

to lie and say that they're cured.

Okay?

What you see there is a premium subscription.

Those people, they get handsomely paid

to carry on this lie that we created.

- You can't do this to me.

- Sarah, you have a year at the absolute best.

- You can't do this to me.

- Sarah. - You can't.

- Sarah.

- You can't. - Sarah.

Listen, I'm only telling you this 'cause I don't want

your son to grow up without his mother.

You know what that's like.

(fist thudding) (Jude groaning)

(dramatic music)

Sarah.

(Sarah groaning)

Sarah, Sarah, listen to me!

Listen to me!

If you go back now there's no chance of a cure

'cause I will never see you again.

(Jude groaning) (hair ripping)

(Sarah panting)

(Sarah grunting) (Jude groaning)

Sarah, Sarah, there's still a chance you can save your-

- Enough of your bullshit!

I've had enough.

I'm gonna go back and I will save my son.

Even if it means trading my life for another.

I can live the rest of my life

without having to see your face again.

- Sarah! (dramatic ethereal music)

(knife clanking)

Sarah.

(dramatic whooshing) (distorted talking)

(wind whistling)

(haunting music) (men harmonizing)

(gate rattling)

(footsteps thudding)

(haunting music) (men harmonizing)

(paper crinkling)

(muffled hospital chatter)

- What are you doing?

The doctor's on his way.

- Has the operation been done?

- I think you should lie down.

- It's a simple yes or no question.

Has the, has the operation been done?

- No, not yet, but- - Okay.

- You know we don't offer refunds.

(eerie music)

(bus engine rumbling)

(wind whistling)

(phone ringing)

- Hello?

- Hey. - Jude.

- [Jude] The one and only.

- But, but- - I figured there was

nothing I could there that I couldn't do here as well.

Only this time I'd be doing it the right way.

- Where are you?

- I'm at a place where one goes to just be.

I'm here for you and your son.

If you'll let me.

(gentle music) (men harmonizing)

(light dramatic music) (wind whistling)

(gentle music) (men harmonizing)
