Mother!

Mother!

- Xiaoman. - Mother.

Calm down.

What happened?

Why was father arrested?

Your father...

They said your father

transferred people from the censorate on his own.

It's an act which is beyond his powers.

Just now, he was brought away before noon.

This must be Zhao Xiaoqian's doing.

I'm going to look for him.

Xiaoman, don't.

Calm down first.

Your uncle went to check with the magistrate early this morning.

Let's hear what he has to say when he comes back.

That's right.

Something bad happened!

Madam, master was arrested.

Suchangji was sealed.

Lady, Commandery Prince said he's waiting for you at Taiping Tavern.

Xiaoman, you mustn't go.

The messenger who came said if she doesn't show,

we'll never see the two old masters again.

Mother.

They are too much.

Calm down first.

Don't tell madam about it for now.

We don't want her to worry.

I'll go and meet him.

Xiaoman, you mustn't go.

They must be up to something.

Don't worry.

Since things have come to this,

there's nothing else to be afraid of anymore.

Xiaoman!

Xiaoman!

Xiaoman!

Xiaoman!

Where's Zhao Xiaoqian?

He's not in.

For certain things, you just have to discuss with me.

Discuss with you?

Are you able to make decisions?

I can't, but you can.

You and Hanchen spent the night together,

and Commandery Prince's Mansion kept it a secret for you.

As you can see when you went to the academy earlier,

no one dare mention it.

However, within Wujiang Prefecture, it's still become a scandal.

Even if Commandery Prince's Mansion is powerful,

we cannot stop these people from gossiping.

Do you know why?

It's Shen Yan's doing.

Shen Yan and Hanchen were enemies since they were kids.

In order to break Zhao and Shen's marriage engagement,

he came up with this plot.

Even your father's matter,

it's also Shen Yan's doing.

What about my uncle?

Is it also Shen Yan's doing?

It's me.

So, what else do you have to say?

I just want to tell you that although Commandery Prince's Mansion

isn't a peaceful place, we can still protect you,

Su Family as well as Xie Family from harm.

If you marry Hanchen as a concubine, your father, your uncle

and even your brother, Xie Xun, who is currently in the capital,

we'll be able to help.

If you aren't willing,

Other than Xie Yu's and Suchangji's future,

even for Xie Xun,

his father is jailed.

Did you know, for the family members of the imperial examination's attendees

had such a thing happen in their family, they are barred from the exam

forever?

You're threatening me?

That's right.

I need to see Zhao Xiaoqian.

I need to see Zhao Xiaoqian!

It's all my doing.

Xingzhou has nothing to do with it.

Why did you do this?

Because I'm selfish.

I don't want to return to the capital.

That's why I could only use you.

What about me?

What did I do?

What did I do wrong?

Why are you so selfish?

Did you consider my feelings even once?

It's as if I was some sort of goods

which you all handled as you wished.

I'm sorry.

You're sorry?

That's my entire life!

That's my entire life!

Two years.

Give me two years.

Become my concubine for two years,

and I'll order them to release your father and uncle.

Suchangji will naturally be fine.

Didn't you want money to redeem your land in Yuyangli?

I promise.

I'll sign a flexible contract with you.

You'll be free after two years, and I'll give you 200 taels of silver.

I'll also return to you your family's mulberry field.

I'll let you return to Yuyangli.

I slapped you because you owed me that.

I promise you.

Hanchen!

Hanchen!

Xiaoman.

They didn't hurt you, did they?

Mother, I'm fine.

They'll release father and uncle.

Suchangji will also be fine.

Why did His Highness suddenly become so kind?

Xiaoman,

is it because you promised him something?

Don't bother about the coming-of-age ceremony.

Mother, I'm going to marry him.

Mother, why are you crying?

I'm going to marry him.

Smile.

Smile as I'm getting married.

I have to be a joyful bride.

Xiaoman.

Mistress, those from Commandery Prince's Mansion are here again.

Greetings, ladies.

Isn't it as you wished?

What are you doing here?

This is Commandery Prince of Julu's gift for you.

His Highness said your coming-of-age ceremony will go on as planned.

He also found Teacher Liu from Bailu Academy

to be your honoured guest.

Teacher Liu had been traveling prior to this.

She'll return to the academy in few days.

She's talented in composing poems.

Even in the capital itself,

she's also known as a gifted female scholar.

Asking her to be Xiaoman's honoured guest,

you all don't have to worry.

His Highness also said what's needed for Xiaoman's ceremony

will all be prepared accordingly.

He owed her that much.

You people are despicable!

I don't trust a word you're saying!

I'm going to Zhong Ziyan now and ask him myself!

My name is Liu Huaiying.

I'm your teacher, and also your honoured guest for today.

Will you look down on me?

After today,

I'm going to become someone else's concubine.

I decided not to marry,

but it doesn't mean I don't want others to get married.

Most women in the world are pitiful.

Their fate often isn't up to themselves,

but you don't have to be sad for this.

As people always say, in this world, to women, father, brother

husband and son are whom they depend on,

but in the end, they should depend on themselves.

[Admonitions for Women]

When I was your age,

I also read "Admonitions for Women".

What do you think?

I've long forgotten about the lessons taught in the book.

However, that sentence, "teach men but not women,

isn't that also bigotry?"

left a lasting impression to me.

Ban Zhao edited "Book of Han",

which means he wasn't a short-sighted person.

Although "Admonitions for Women" were lessons for women,

it's possible to glimpse the first light between the lines.

It's the hopes of Ban Zhao which was for men and women

to learn courtesy and knowledge.

That's why you decided to teach women knowledge.

Xiaoman, remember this.

Even after you get married,

you must also remain strong despite the circumstances,

and never let your initial ambition falter.

Although you'll be in Commandery Prince's Mansion,

you can also learn knowledge and be a prolific reader.

That way, you won't get caught in the typical complaints by females

or the troubles of daily life.

Only with ambition will a woman not be affected by external factors.

Thank you, Teacher Liu.

I'll definitely keep your teachings in mind so I could be like you

without losing my initial ambition.

Stand forth, the protagonist of the coming-of-age ceremony.

The first cap is bestowed upon you on this joyous day.

You're to rid yourself of childishness and acquire virtues of adulthood.

By doing so, you will live a long and happy life and have good fortune.

which goes well with the scholar. A suitable name is the topmost priority.

So, keep it well for the rest of your lifetime. You shall be called Fu An.

Although I'm not smart, I couldn't offer my respect enough.

Serve the tea.

Filial to the parents, take care of the juniors with kindness.

Temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous.

The bride's in a red costume.

Is she going to be the duchess?

I told them to make the wedding dress.

It has nothing to do with Xiaoman.

Come at me if there's anything.

His Highness doesn't know the customs.

Liangji, are you also not aware of it?

His Highness is a royal.

Therefore, he should follow the rules.

Today, the concubine's wearing a red costume.

In the future, when the duchess marries into the family,

what's she going to wear?

Zhu Momo, we weren't considerate enough.

Lady Xie was our classmate.

Hanchen's getting a concubine and everyone's happy.

In fact, this isn't exactly red either.

We told them not to make it bright red.

We added mauve colour to differentiate

as well as to add to the festivities.

That's right. Mauve colour was added.

All right, that's that.

Since she's married into the family,

I won't pursue what happened in the past.

However, I was sent here by Her Highness.

So, I should follow Prince of Pu's Mansion's rules.

Since Lady Xie is the concubine, within the mansion,

she's just a maidservant.

Prince of Pu's Mansion never allowed a person with no manner stays.

Lady Xie, show me your courtesy.

Zhu Momo, you came all the way from the capital.

It must be a tiring journey.

Why don't you take a rest first?

Carry it properly.

Zhu Momo!

This is Commandery Prince's Mansion, not Prince of Pu's Mansion!

Since you're now a prince,

you should be cautious with your words and actions more.

Let's not talk about Prince of Pu's Mansion.

Even at Zichen Palace in the capital,

which of the ladies has no manners?

Since you're from Zhao Family and respected by the people,

you should follow the people's rules.

Tomorrow, Lady Xie will rise at 5.45 a.m. to

learn manners from me first.

But I have to go to the academy tomorrow.

Lady Xie, you're so naive.

No married woman can leave her mansion freely.

Moreover, now that you're married,

you don't have to go to the academy anymore.

What's the purpose of going to the academy anyway?

It's to... From today onwards,

Lady Xie will stop going to the academy.

You'll learn manners from me first.

Hanchen, don't act rashly.

Lady Xie should go and rest first.

Early tomorrow morning, I'll wait for you here.

What's the purpose

of studying?

Guess what she's here for?

It seems like your parents haven't given up on the idea of

your marriage with the daughter of Shen Family.

They want to chase Xiaoman away for me to marry Shen Zhaowen instead.

What wishful thinking.

They've never bothered much about me since young,

and now when they realize I'm useful for them, they quickly

take actions without taking my opinion into consideration.

So, what do you plan to do?

Anyway, let's not alert our opponent first.

I have my own way.

Zhao Xiaoqian, what's going on?

I heard that someone came to your mansion last night

and advised you not to let Xiaoman study.

Who is that person?

Zhu Momo is here.

Who?

Zhu Momo?

She even interfered with Hanchen's affairs?

That's right.

She was sent by my mother,

a Momo at Prince of Pu's Mansion.

She said that since Xiaoman married into my family,

it'll be against the rules if she goes elsewhere.

She even said it's our family's internal rules for discipline.

In fact, it's just my mother's idea to deal with me.

She's Princess Consort of Pu's nanny,

the most powerful elder servant in the family.

It's not just Hanchen either.

Even Prince and Princess Consort of Pu respect her.

We can't openly disobey her words.

So, what should we do now?

Do we shrug Xiaoman's matter off?

Who says we're shrugging it off?

It just depends on how we'll handle it.

After school today,

you'll go and keep Xiaoman company at the mansion.

This old, stubborn servant is not easy to deal with.

Tell Xiaoman not to oppose her.

What do you mean by "it depends on how we'll handle it"?

Exactly what do you plan to do?

Tell her to trust me this once.

But there has to be a solution.

Yes.

Hanchen.

Hanchen.

Xingzhou.

That night, were you all right?

I drank that day and spoke nonsense.

Please don't mind.

Oh, right.

I went to the academy earlier and realized Xiaoman wasn't there.

Everyone else was acting kind of strange.

What's wrong?

It's indeed strange.

You can say it's unheard of.

That day during Teacher Liu's Poetry Competition, she

went on Commandery Prince's horse carriage

and they somehow left the city, and didn't come back the entire night.

So, when everyone heard of it,

she could only marry him.

Talking about this matter, it also saddens me actually.

Lady Xie is quite studious.

Last time, I was the honored guest at her coming-of-age ceremony.

I found out she even read "Esteemed Documents" before.

Yet, she's getting married.

Such a pity.

(What an amazing poem that you've written)

Hit the tea whisk with force.

Use your force.

If you don't, the tea leaves won't be leveraged.

The tea ceremony is the basic skill for women.

Lady Xie, your poor skills must mean you lacked training since young.

(Siqi Hall)

Zhu Momo, Lady Xie's maternal cousin, Lady Su is here to visit.

One without manners becomes anxious easily.

Continue.

She's only been married here for a day.

What's there to visit?

Ask her to go home.

Momo, my cousin was closest with me before I was married.

Please let me see her.

Momo, Lady Su said Commandery Prince gave his permission.

So...

Forget it, Hong Su.

Bring some ginger slices and plum for them

to have some tea with the snacks.

See me in an hour's time.

Thank you, Momo.

(Siqi Hall)

Come on.

Hong Su,

can you tell Momo that I'll learn the tea ceremony today

as well as the etiquette.

After I learned all these,

can I go back to studying?

Don't worry, Lady Xie.

Momo may be stringent, but she still hopes for your best.

However, in terms of studying,

I agree with Momo.

You don't see married women attending an academy.

Isn't it good for you to just stay at home?

Did they torture you and stop you from studying?

Lady, you should bring me back quickly.

Lady Xie gets unfair treatment at home.

Momo punished her, and I also suffered.

Let me see.

Let me see.

Did they hit you?

Don't worry about that now.

I just want to go back to my studies now.

Have you thought about other ways?

Isn't Zhao Xiaoqian going to help you?

You're still mentioning him.

Whenever he saw Momo, he dare not uttered a single word.

Look, today, he doesn't even come back after school.

Men's words can never be trusted.

Why do you keep talking?

Get down.

Although I don't know why we have to learn knowledge,

I don't wish to be trapped here like a bird in the cage.

Don't give up.

Zhao Xiaoqian won't help you, but I will.

I'll help you to think of a way.

Let's go to Teacher Liu for help.

Teacher Liu?

That's right.

I'm talking about Teacher Liu.

She gave us homework today.

Dragon Boat Festival is in two days' time.

She told us to write Qu Yuan's poetry and prose,

and answer it on the day of the test.

You'll also prepare a copy at home,

and I'll help you bring it to Teacher Liu

so she could plead for your sake.

What do you think?

When is the test?

Let me think.

It's the day you'll visit your own family.
