My Lord, I've brought her over.

Not for you to eat.

I'm hungry!

Take it.

This is a record of all the missing people within Chang'an city in the past 10 years.

You must help me find someone who has a congenital leg condition.

I better go back to prison.

Lord Fish you want to trip me up!

Fox!

if you can find it, there'll be food for you.

But if you cannot find it, then you may have to...

But if you cannot find it, then you may have to....

stay in prison for a while.

If the prison wardens are in a good mood,

at most they will make you share your lodgings with the rats.

If they are in a bad mood, then they will let the torture instruments

in the Ministry of Justice get a feel of you.

in the Ministryof Justice get a feel of you.

I heard those torture instruments...

As soon as they are used, the criminals will...

Alright!

I'll look for it!

I like to find people the most.

Xiao Fish..

Speak.

Did you ask....

why that person was at the Court of Judicial review?

His matter has nothing to do with you!

Why did you not let me inform everyone about our relationship in public?

Look.

12th of July in the 10th year of the Zhen Guan era

The jewelry shop belonging to Cai Yu's family in the east,

was the location of 4 murders.

4 attendants were killed by the murderers using a short knife.

the young owner Cai Yu was missing, and he had a disability in his right leg.

All his money and treasurables were stolen.

A man.

And has a disability in his right leg.

It fits so well with the bones found in the screen.

Also there is a picture of him here.

Where are you taking me?

Fox you really like escaping.

can only shackle you to my side and help me with my case.

I am not your pet!

Time for your medicine.

I will take it later.

Mistress after you finish the medicine, eat the sour plum to get rid of the bitter aftertaste.

How many times have I told you? Mistress has a weak stomach,

how can she take the plum?

I forgot I will take it away.

Lord Xiao,

this is...

This is my personal examiner.

But why is she wearing the shackles...

She is too mischievous, she's disobedient.

So that was why I had to do this.

Lord Xiao.

What brought you so late here? Is it for the case?

I came over to ask some questions about your wife.

Feel free to ask me what you wish to know.

Cai Yu....do you know her?

I do.

As Lord Xiao has questions for my wife,

then I do not need to remain here.

Lord Xiao I bid my leave now.

I saw on the records at the Ministry of Justice

that you were the one who reported Cai Yu's disappearance 7 years ago.

And Cai Yu and Mistress....

We were-in love.

Cai Yu and I were deeply in love,

and were secretly together.

On that day when he invited me to meet up in his private lodgings,

we did not expect...

that we would encounter bandits.

Cai dear!

Yue Zhu!

My parents found out about our matter!

The two of them...

Yue Zhu! Hurry up!

Cai Yu!

Hurry leave! Go report it to the authorities!

I refuse to leave!

Hurry and go!

I never expected that

when I brought the authorities there,

Gai Dong, Cai Xi,

Cai Nan, Cai Bei.

4 of his subordinates have died.

And inside all the furniture was overturned.

And there was blood as well.

But there was no signs of Cai Yu.

yet who knew that the bodies of those servants

would disappear within the government office.

No-one knows what happened even now.

Why doesn't Cai Yu live with his family?

He likes his peace so he lives in his lodgings alone.

You went alone that night?

Every time I visit him, Cai Dong comes to collect me.

I never take my attendants.

What about the Cai family?

Did you not have any contact?

The Gai family felt that Chang'an is a place of sadness.

So they moved away.

Then do you know where they are?

From then onwards,

we lost all contact.

There is something I still do not understand.

Why did those servants not yell when they saw the bandits?

And you and Cai Yu only realized there were bandits when you

heard something shatter?

Cai Yu suffered from a leg ailment even since he was born.

So he has always shown empathy to those who are disabled like him.

So his four attendants are mutes.

I see.

Mistress your complexion is quite poor.

Did you not rest well?

7 years have passed.

But recently,

I could hear the sound of the knives cutting into flesh,

and dream of those people every night.

These nightmares follow me everywhere

how can I be well?

It is growing late, I bid my leave.

Yuanzi.

Mistress I am here.

I am feeling unwell.

Let Yuanzi see you off.

Please do not blame me.

Mistress rest up well.

Thank you My Lord.

My Lord please follow me.

Take care my Lord.

Fox?

Fox.

Let's go.

I got it.

Has your Mistress been suffering from nightmares every day recently?

That's right My Lord, Mistress keeps saying that she can hear voices.

What's wrong?

I have a stomachache, I want to go to the privy.

Do you think I will believe you?

Xiao fish do you think I can escape the palm of your hand?

Yuanzi.

Take her to the privy.

No need Yuanzi.

Tell me where the privy is, I'll go myself.

it's in that courtyard ahead.

Thank you!

Xiao fish surely you don't plan to peak on me when I go?

Didn't expect you had such habits.

If you dare to escape,

I will punish you immediately.

I got it.

Why is there a cat here?

Did you hear some noise?

Your Excellency, I heard nothing.

Mistress! Mistress!

Xiao fish! Xiao fish! Hurry over here!

Mistress! Mistress!

Mistress!

Mistress wake up!

T-T-This....Wife!

Wife!

Wife!

I do not know why Mistress tried to hand herself.

Mistress! Mistress!

She's fine.

She is only a little weak.

She'll be fine after some sleep.

She was talking to you, why did she hang herself?

What did you say to her?

I fear the reason does not lie with us.

Instead someone wishes for your wife's death.

Who?

I will find the truth.

Mistress!

Fox.

You said you hurried over to the courtyard as soon as you heard that sound.

And then saw Mistress Liu..

hang herself....

Get up.

Xiao fish!

We've been at it all day yesterday,

I didn't get anything to eat!

Do you have any humanity at all?

Listen.

My stomach is growling!

Put out your hand.

What?

It's an order!

You like osmanthus biscuits,

why didn't you tell me?

I don't know what you like despite knowing you for so long.

How did you know?

You said you heard the sound coming from the privy,

let's take a look around.

You first heard that sound here last night right?

That's right, after going to the privy and passed this place

I heard the sound of a knife striking something.

It was a very clear sound.

But when I passed through Chu Yue Zhu's room

although I could hear it but it was not so loud.

You came to see Chu Yue Zhu because you heard her say

that she could hear that sound every night, and was unable to sleep was that right?

I did not expect her to hang herself yesterday.

Luckily you managed to save her.

There is a shallow well here too.

Xiao fish..

what do you-want now?

I need someone to go down and take a look at the situation down there.

I think...I should go back to the prison.

Fox.

Do not forget.

You are someone with a criminal record.

Even if I let you go, your record is still within the ministry of justice.

The ministers from the Ministry of Justice will keep coming to find you.

If there is a crime committed where you are,

the authorities will come and question you.

And in the future your life will be...

How about this?

You go down and help me take a look around.

And I will kindly help you erase that record.

What do you think?

Xiao fish don't let go!

I am not ready yet!

I am letting go.

Xiao fish, surely you are not going to seek revenge on me

by drowning me because I didn't admit you were my husband?

I like to seek revenge!

Don't worry, it's a shallow well.

What do you think fox?

Is the scenery nice?

Fox?

Fox! Fox are you alright?

Catch the sword!

My Lord!

You dare to attack His Lordship? You'll be in jail for 10 years

Xiao fish hurry and explain it to this mad dog!

You dare to insult a minister? Another ten years!

Your dog has gone mad!

Where did this come from? Tell me!

I told her to retrieve it from the well.

Mad dog!

Mad fox!

Enough.

Fox..

This knife..

where did you find it from the well?

There was a notch within the well, and the handle was sticking out.

I retrieved it from there.

Was there a passageway inside the well?

It seems to be lead to the Chu Yue Zhu's room.

I think the person pretending to be a ghost

probably scraped the walls with this knife

that's why we could hear the sound from there.

That's right.

Oh yes My Lord.

All the servants involved in moving the screen have gathered up in the courtyard.

It seems someone used the chance when no-one was around last night

to paint some blood on there.

My Lord.

It seems like the culprit lives in the manor,

Or perhaps is colluding with someone here.

Housekeeper Liu.

My Lord.

Did you monitor the delivery of this screen?

Your Excellency,

I was responsible for transporting it.

Did anything happen on the way?

Nothing...

happened on the way here.

Oh yes My Lord.

On the way back to the Manor,

one of the axles on the carriages broke

and we were delayed.

I had no choice but to leave it in an alley and guard it myself.

Steward Zhang Yong and two other servants went to find a new carriage.

Did you ever leave the carriage?

Your Lordship, I never left.

Did you go and find the carriage together

or separately?

Your Lordship we split up.

Where did you place the carriage?

Within the alleyway.

Just here.

The servants and I

removed the screen covered with the red cloth from the carriage

and left it here.

Where was the carriage?

We stopped the carriage there.

Then where were you standing?

was probably standing here at the time.

Did anything else happen?

Nothing else happened.

Alright you may go.

Yes My Lord.

Let's go.

Xiao fish..

do you want to know if their words were true?

Fox, you have a method?

Give me 50 coins!

Don't deceive me.

It's not like you don't know what I'm like.

Bai Yi.

Yes.

Follow me and you have fish food to eat.

Thank you.

Answer my questions.

And this money will belong to me.

Sure. Sure.

Was a carriage stopped here?

And guarding an item?

That's right, a carriage broke down here.

And a wheel was broken.

And someone was guarding that place.

Did they ever leave the carriage?

Never.

You clearly tried to trick him of his money how can you lie to him?

His Lordship is willing to reward me.

You jealous?

You!

Someone reported to me,

that you stole the screen!

Bai Yi take him away!

Not me! It was not me!

Someone paid me to do this!

I want to hear the truth!

Someone paid for us beggars to steal something.

It was yesterday by that wall.

The few of us attracted the housekeeper's attention

and then used the chance to replace the thing in the carriage and take it away.

We just did it for food,

Who paid you?

It was a man.

He wore a hat with a veil.

I can not identify his face.

After giving us money, he told us after

to leave it in a certain place

the rest of the money was under the stone of that instructed area.

That person, what was his height and weight?

About your height, a little fatter than you.

Where did you place that item?

It's amongst that trash there.

My Lord look at the characters there.

It looks like Zhang Yong dropped it when he left.

[Yong]

She might be too tired.

We spent yesterday night investigating.

Immediately go to the Liu Manor and arrest Zhang Yong.

Yes.

My Lord how did you know there were bodies buried in my courtyard?

When I pursued Zhang Yong

I accidentally found a sacrifical altar.

Was it where you breathed in that poisonous gas?

That's right.

There were characters on the wall of that place.

It was a foreign language.*

I know a little of it.

From the language I discovered that

it was the instructions to perform a magical spell,

called hypnosis.

This kind of spell uses the skeletons of humans

to lure the living into a dream.

And whilst they are trapped in the dream, they will hang themselves.

Could Yue Zhu have hung herself

because of this hypnosis?

But how did they case this hypnosis?

Within that room I discovered 5 ugly statues.

and they were arranged in the same way your manor was structured.

And the main statue was positioned in the same place as the main hall of your manor.

Yesterday,

we discovered some bones lodged within that jade screen in that hall.

And the positions of the other 4 statues

matched the position of the four corners of this courtyard.

And we discovered bones in each of those corners.

It seems the caster

is targeting your wife.
