No Boundary

Episode 1

Backed by the green hills,

surrounded by flowing river.

Without an invitation from the master,

Xihualiu

no one can cross the Duanmu Bridge.

Qifeng Prefecture

Sir,

we got a problem in Baiwen Bookshop.

My Lord,

something strange has happened in Baiwen Bookshop.

All the books have been torn up.

Have you inspected the scene?

Other than books,

are there

any other financial losses?

Has the owner had any disputes with anyone recently?

Have you asked about these?

You need to use your eyes and head in investigation.

No matter how loudly you shout,

the answer will not fall from the sky.

Come on, let's go and check it out.

It was a cat.

You left a window opened,

leaving just enough of a gap

for the cat to get in and out.

The cat's footprints are found at the window.

There are cat scratches on the book shelves.

And cat hair on the floor.

If I am not mistaken,

it was a black cat.

That reminds me.

I was drying some fish at my backyard a while ago,

and a cat bit on them.

The most frustrating thing

was that it only took one bite of each fish.

And I finally caught it in the act

on the third day.

It was a big black cat.

I threw some rocks at it

and crippled its leg.

It ran away with a limp.

Was...

Was it trying to get back at me?

Is the cat a demon?

Don't be superstitious.

Even goat kneels to accept milk from its mother,

and crow nurtures its parents when they are older.

Animals know how to repay kindness,

of course they know how to seek revenge as well.

But what about these torn books of mine...

There is nothing I can do

if the cat has no owner.

But if it has,

I will make sure the cat owner

pays you back for all your losses.

But the cat ran away.

How will we find out who owns it?

Wait for me.

The cat's owner

must be from Xihualiu.

Sir,

we can't cross it.

We can't enter Xihualiu.

Without an invitation from the master,

no one can cross the Duanmu Bridge.

Have you forgotten that Lord Jiang

has told us that we should stay out of it

whenever it comes to Xihualiu?

I haven't.

I wonder

what's the background of this Xihualiu.

Even Lord Jiang wants us to stay away from it.

But it doesn't matter what background it has,

one must compensate

when one destroys other's property.

Lord Zhan!

Another murder has been reported

in Liujia Village.

The victim died in exactly the same way

as in the previous two cases.

Also, two daughters of another family in the village

have gone missing in three days.

Let's go to the crime scene.

Sir,

what about the cat from Xihualiu?

Leave them a notice.

Ask the owner of Xihualiu to drop by Qifeng Prefecture

on another day to pay the compensation.

Me?

Xihualiu

Stop pushing!

Stop pushing!

Stay back!

Step back! Step back!

Stop pushing!

Step back! Stop pushing!

Liujia Village

Step back!

Make way!

Qifeng Prefecture investigation!

Make way! Make way!

Stop pushing! Stop pushing!

Make way! Make way!

Stop pushing!

That man, don't let him leave.

Make way!

Stop pushing!

Lord Zhan,

the dead man was an impoverished man named Liu Ermazi.

He died in the exact same way with

night watchman Mr Ma and scholar Fan Xu.

Their muscles shrank.

Their skins and their fleshes dried out.

These three cases are probably

the work of the same person.

It's too uncanny.

I'm afraid

this wasn't done by human.

Officer,

why won't you let me leave?

Liu San,

you were sent to Qifeng Prefecture's jail

last month for stealing.

And you are now acting suspiciously

at a crime scene.

Liu Ermazi was my neighbour.

He is dead now,

there is nothing with me

coming here to have a look, right?

Qifeng Prefecture can't frame people for things they didn't do.

You are not framed!

We have proof!

Where is the proof?

The proof is in your pocket.

Liu Ermazi was stabbed to death.

If I am not wrong,

you are hiding the dagger in your pocket now.

Liu San,

did you do it?

Liu Ermazi was as poor as a church mouse.

There is no way the money belonged to him.

Obviously, someone has hired you

to kill him.

Lord Zhan,

you are the best sheriff in town.

You can't frame me for a murder I didn't commit.

Liu Ermazi made a small fortune after he stole some money

and gambled with it.

He even said that he would visit

the most famous courtesan Cui Yu in Baihua Pavilion.

Who knew that

he would die this morning?

I knew he had a habit

of hiding his money under the cabinet.

I just wanted to take advantage of the incident and keep the money for my own.

I didn't kill anyone.

Sounds like you're telling the truth.

How about this? Go home first.

I will decide when I find out more about this.

Zhu Ran, take him away.

Yes, sir.

But I...

-Move. -What more do you need to find out?

I really just stole it.

Move.

Lord Zhan!

This is the third case this month.

It doesn't make sense.

An old man who worked as night watchman.

A scholar who had just obtained his degree in the imperial exam.

A broke man who became rich overnight.

They had nothing in common.

Wait.

They had.

They all liked Cui Yu.

Cui Yu.

The night watchman Mr Ma?

I remember him.

Lord Zhan,

it's not like I'm lack of customers here.

Why would I want to serve an old man?

Yes, that's a painting of me.

Mr Fan was a successful candidates in the imperial exam.

And also a handsome man.

He was a great painter.

He promised to paint a picture of me.

Who knew he would...

One was rejected by Cui Yu,

one was Cui Yu's client,

and one hadn't had the chance to see Cui Yu yet.

I have to visit Baihua Pavilion again.

Sir...

What took you so long?

Welcome.

Qifeng Prefecture's men have paid a visit to Liujia Village.

However,

I don't think they'll be able to link the case to Baihua Pavilion.

Of course.

No little sheriff in the mortal world

can crack such case.

The vegetarian wontons at Baihua Pavilion have always been popular.

Eating fine food and waiting for the beauty.

All that's left is a good show.

Cui Yu! Cui Yu!

Alright, alright!

Let me go over the rules again.

200 taels of silver

for a visiting card.

Once you get the visiting card,

fill in your birthplace and birth date, etcetera.

We will hand it over to Miss Cui Yu, which she will choose from it.

The one she chooses

will get to meet her

and spend time with her.

Money will be refunded to those she doesn't pick.

The point is 200 taels of silver per person.

Miss Cui Yu is our most famous courtesan.

Not a cat.

Cui Yu!

I want to see Cui Yu!

I want to see her!

Lord Zhan.

You know me?

Everyone in Qifeng City knows you.

All the girls in Baihua Pavilion

heard about you too.

Lord Zhan,

thank goodness you are here.

They were bullying me.

I am so scared that

my heart is pounding really hard.

Lord Zhan,

touch it if you don't believe me.

Is Cui Yu in her room now?

I have some questions for her.

I can now maintain my beauty

thanks to those life essence.

Does your lover, Mr Zhang know who you really are?

Pity those men.

They even lost their lives for your charm.

Such silly thing to die for.

Be a good girl

and leave with me.

Don't let it fall.

Who are you?

How dare you come here and talk to me disrespectfully?

Says the one who dares

to kill in Xihualiu's territory,

who can be more disrespectful than you?

Xihualiu?

You are Duanmu Cui?

You!

That's rude.

Call me Sect Leader Duanmu.

Since you know who I am,

you should know my rules.

First,

did you commit illegal act for money?

Second,

did you commit crime of lechery?

Third,

did you kill anyone?

Looks like you did all three.

Then you can't blame me for doing this.

Duanmu Cui, let go of me!

Qifeng Prefecture investigation!

Open the door.

Troublemaker.

They couldn't have come at a worse time.

What are you doing?

Don't be afraid, hold on to me.

Sheriff, let go of me.

Watch it!

Guixu

Break it up, break it up.

Madam,

are you alright?

Who are you calling "madam"?

It would be your greatest honour

if I really was your madam.

What are you looking at?

Did you go to

Liujia Village today?

How did you know?

Well then,

you are related with the missing person and murder cases

in Liujia Village.

Please come with me to the Qifeng Prefecture.

You really haven't seen what I am capable of, have you?

I see you don't know enough to be afraid.

Fine.

I will show you what I am capable of.

Move without the wind.

Move!

Hello, Lord Zhan.

Lord Zhan?

You are Zhan Yan from Qifeng Prefecture.

And who are you?

Xihualiu,

Duanmu Cui.

Without an invitation from the master,

no one can cross the Duanmu Bridge, you are that Duanmu?

You seem young,

but you are knowledegable indeed.

Miss Duanmu,

do you have a black cat?

I do.

Miss Duanmu,

you are involved in several cases of destruction of property...

Sir,

if you want to solve the murder cases,

you'd better stay out of my way.

I am going to catch the killer now.

As an officer,

I find answer when in doubt, and I catch criminal when I see one.

I'm afraid you have no choice but to let me come with you.

Let's see if you can catch up with me.

Tell me!

How did Duanmu Cui find out about me?

Did you betray me?

You've killed so many people,

there is no way you can hide it from

the High Immortal Duanmu from Xihualiu.

It was just a couple of men.

It is because of the human race that

we were suffering in Ninth Hell.

I am going to kill them all,

and I am going to kill you too.

Stop!

Fighting among yourselves.

When it comes to demon killing,

you'd better leave it to Xihualiu.

We are professionals.

General Duanmu.

You know me?

I... I don't.

I just heard a lot about you.

You were the one who led me here

with the petals of peach blossom.

And it was you

who used the petals to inform me that

Cui Yu had committed murders in Liujia Village.

My power is weak.

It is tough for Demon Clan

like us to live in mortal world,

I have to rely on the powerful one for protection.

I found out by accident that Cui Yu had been killing human.

I warned her,

but she wouldn't listen.

So

I have no choice but to seek for Xihualiu's help.

Has the Demon Clan declined so much?

Mountain demon like her is considered to be powerful...

Demon Clan?

What is a mountain demon?

Let me be frank with you.

The murders were the work of the Demon Clan.

Xihualiu will take it from here.

Qifeng Prefecture can leave it now.

Since the crime was committed in Qifeng City,

it is my duty to get to the bottom of it.

Tell Wengu

I was delayed

by a sheriff,

but I will be back in no time.

Paper crane messenger.

Xihualiu's magic

truly is amazing as they say.

Magic

is nothing but a deceptive trick.

Deceptive trick?

Try performing one then.

Since you're such a show-off,

why don't you show me your magic again?

Sect Leader Duanmu!

What are you doing?

I am showing you my magic.

This is a treasure of Penglai.

It doesn't work on you mortals,

but it works well on the Demon Clan.

Little Peach Blossom,

wait here.

Once I am done with that nail demon,

I will come back for you.

My name is not Little Peach Blossom,

I am Hong Luan.

She is a witness of the case.

I need to take her back to the prefecture.

She is not the murderer.

Why does she need to go to the prefecture?

Come on.

Let me open your eyes.

Xihualiu

High Immortal Wengu.

High Immortal Wengu.

Master was delayed

by a sheriff,

but she would be back in no time.

High Immortal Wengu.

When will Master return?

Is she busy with something big?

Does she need my help?

Your master is having fun out there.

She won't be back for a while.

Zhuque Street

Sheriff.

What's the matter?

Are you mad?

That's good.

You can go alone if you think I'm wasting time.

Boss,

a bowl of tofu sticks, please.

And a bowl of fried jelly.

You got it.

Why are you eating now?

The owner here is from Chenliu.

This is authentic

Chenliu tofu stick.

I've been wanting to try it for a long time.

Do you want to eat or not?

You are free to go if you don't want to.

Enjoy your food.

Sect Leader Duanmu,

don't think I don't know

what is on your mind.

I am not going to let you work the case alone.

Zhan Yan, Lord Zhan,

you are quite notable in Qifeng City.

Don't you think it's improper for you

to keep pestering a girl like me?

Why are you taking off your clothes?

We are in public.

Behave yourself.

You need a companion to eat with you, don't you?

Let me keep you company then.

Boss,

another bowl of tofu sticks, please.

You got it.

Forget it, I don't want to eat anymore.

Let's go.

Excuse me.

30 copper coins, please.

I don't have any money with me.

Why don't you

go to a doctor named Wengu in Xihualiu

and settle the bill?

Never mind then.

This is on the house.

Boss,

I will pay for her food.

Sure, sure.

What's with the boss?

I am so beautiful,

why did she look frightened?

Don't you have any idea

what kind of reputation

Xihualiu has out here?

What do you mean?

I know.

They must say we immortals

are powerful and we help the people.

We must be even famous than Earth God

and City God.

Stop.

Where exactly can we find the murderer?

Stop.

Not we,

just I.

Isn't this Tian's favourite bun?

What is it doing in my Qiankun bag?

Brother,

how many dry food

have you stuffed into my Qiankun bag?

I'm just here in the mortal world to catch demons,

not fighting a war.

Found it.

What is this?

I planted a tracking charm on the mountain demon

when she wasn't looking.

Wherever she goes,

it will show up on this map.

This magic tool

is more interesting than your magic spells.

Don't get any ideas on my magic tool.

I can only use this once.

This is extremely rare.

Is this a bridge or a house?

What's with all the lines?

Yu'er!

Yu'er,

get up.

I was caught and I blew it.

Zhang Residence

Very fast, Lord Zhan.

Thank you.

I just know the way.

Sect Leader Duanmu!

Entering without permission is trespassing.

You may knock as much as you want to, Lord Zhan.

We will see who will open the door for you.

Pretending to be rigid with your costume on.

Zhang Residence

I've put you through a lot.

As long as you are true to me,

I am no afraid of any hardships.

The sun and the moon

are the witnesses of my love to you.

Mr Zhang,

I will never leave you.

But I'm afraid I can no longer

take people's life essence

to make you immortal.

Yu'er,

I will

give up my life

just to keep you safe.

I never thought that

a mountain demon who has lived for centuries

would fall for such sweet talks.

Who are you?

How dare you trespass into private residence?

He is talking to you, Lord Zhan.

What is the offence of

breaking into private residence?

Qifeng Prefecture investigation.

You are now suspected

to be involved in a murder.

Please come to the prefecture with me.

A murder?

What does the murder have to do with me?

We will find out about it

after the questioning.

How brave are you, Lord Zhan?

I am brave enough.

Good.

If something happens later...

I can handle it myself.

Wicked one,

show your true form!

Monster.

Lord Zhan.

I know nothing, Lord Zhan.

It's all this monster's fault.

This monster forced me to do it.

I am just a mere mortal,

I can't get rid of her.

Help me, Lord Zhan.

You said you love me,

is it all a lie?

Don't come over.

Don't come over!

Monster.

Monster!

You see only the external beauty

with your eyes.

You can't see the love underneath.

You might as well be blind.

Now that you can't see,

you won't be disgusted by my look anymore.

We can still be together like before,

can't we?

No.

I had thought beauty would keep you with me.

Only today do I know that

you never really loved me.

In that case,

with you by my side

in the afterlife,

at least I won't be alone.

Why didn't you let me save him?

A gentleman should always keep his word.

He promised to share life and death with the mountain demon.

What did I do wrong by fulfilling his promise?

Fulfilling his promise?

I saw only a murderer

and her victim.

Lord Zhan,

wasn't the mountain demon a victim too,

for falling in love with the wrong man?

Why did you kill the mountain demon then, Sect Leader Duanmu?

Life and death are normal.

The appearances of everything are false and insubstantial.

Good and evil are hid within one's heart.

The mountain demon should be punished for taking human lives.

It has always been Xihualiu's missions

to punish evil and uphold good.

You don't need to thank me, Lord Zhan.

Good and evil

should only be judged based on the law

in court.

What can your mortal laws

do about Demon Clan?

If you mortals were so capable,

I wouldn't have to come down to your world to go through this. //

Lord Zhan,

what more do you have to say?

Sect Leader Duanmu,

Qifeng is a place where the rule of law prevails.

Those uncanny murder cases

just ended up unresolved.

The law doesn't work like this.

So please come back with me

to Qifeng Prefecture.

We can wrap up your previous

case of property destruction as well.

What if I say no?

And you can't defeat me.

Oh I know.

You are afraid to go to Qifeng Prefecture

because you are guilty of something, aren't you?

Reverse psychology?

Do you really think it would work on me?

Lead the way.

Bring it on.

Penglai

He Shang.

He Shang.

Wait.

Are you holding

the elixir that is freshly concocted by Lao Jun?

Hurry, hurry.

Give me some for my pain.

What happened to you?

What else could it be?

The seal of Ninth Hell has loosened recently.

The demons have escaped to the mortal world to cause trouble.

Our injuries

are related to the matter.

Despite Duanmu Cui is a young girl,

she has always had a bad temper.

She did this to you?

Not Duanmu Cui.

Her blood brother, Yang Jian, did this.

What?

I guess

I didn't hit you guys hard enough.

Everyone knows the prophecy

of the Heavenly Maiden.

If Duanmu recalls her past

before she became a god,

Penglai, the mortal world

and the Ninth Hell will be in trouble.

For a thousand years,

I have been guarding

the chest of Duanmu's love debts

relentlessly.

But what about you?

Because of your own laziness,

you actually tricked her to the mortal world.

No way.

The more I think about my sister, the more worried I am.

I have to find her in the mortal world.

You are the God of Justice.

You can't just go to the mortal world whenever you want to.

That's right.

She has Wengu by her side.

She will be fine.

Exactly.

When I think of my sister,

I just pity her.

She is kind

and gullible.

I wonder how she is doing

in the mortal world.

Will she be bullied?

Qifeng Prefecture

This...

Sect Leader Duanmu,

Qifeng Prefecture

the drum of injustice

is set up for the people to tell their injustice.

A court trial will be held when the drum is hit.

It isn't a toy.

Are my hands beating the drum?

Lord Zhan,

you said this before,

you believe in evidence.

You...

Qifeng Prefecture

I didn't realize there are so many rooms

in Qifeng Prefecture.

Impressive.

Better keep up, Sect Leader Duanmu.

Stop looking around.

I will bring you to Lord Jiang.

Who is Lord Jiang?

My godfather.

Magistrate of Qifeng Prefecture, Jiang Wen Qing.

Marquis Jiang.

Yan Yan,

where did you bring

such a beautiful girl from?

Your Lord Zhan

begged me to come, of course.

You have better eye than him.

My Lord,

this is Duanmu Cui from Xihualiu,

Sect Leader Duanmu.

Xihualiu?

So, you've heard about me before.

Looks like Xihualiu

has quite a reputation.

So, you are Sect Leader Duanmu from Xihualiu.

Nice to meet you.

So, you are the magistrate of Qifeng Prefecture, Jiang Wen Qing?

Marquis Jiang?

His godfather?

Don't be rude.

Address His Lordship as my lord.

Never mind, never mind.

That is me.

Since you and

Sheriff Zhan Yan

are acquainted,

I will skip the introduction.

This

is the official registrar of our Qifeng Prefecture,

Shangguan Ce.

Hello, Sect Leader Duanmu.

Sect Leader Duanmu,

why do you keep staring at me?

You look familiar to me.

Have we met somewhere before?

Sect Leader Duanmu,

mind your words.

Sect Leader Duanmu,

I am over 50 years old.

I have a wife.

It's inappropriate to flirt with me.

I am not flirting with you.

I just want to ask you...

My Lord,

the murder cases in Liujia Village and Zhang Residence

have been solved.

The culprit is Cui Yu, the most famous courtesan of Baihua Pavilion.

She had confessed to her crime before she died.

According to Sect Leader Duanmu,

Cui Yu

is a mountain demon that has lived for hundreds of years.

God of Justice.

Where is Duanmu?

High Immortal Duanmu

has gone out to catch demon.

Sect Leader Duanmu,

can you explain in detail what a mountain demon is?

You've heard of demons and spirits, right?

The culprit of

the recent murders in Qifeng City

is a demon from the mountain.

The mountain demon was a vine wood spirit.

It kills by sucking out human's life essence.

Speaking of which,

this can be considered a failure on our part in Penglai.

These demons

were supposed to stay in the Ninth Hell.

But 100 years ago,

the seal of the Ninth Hell was loosened.

In the final battle between the Demon Clan and the army of Xiqi,

which took place in Chong City,

we won it in the end.

My father

opened up the realm of Penglai with the Penglai Drawing

given to him by the Heavenly Maiden.

We were granted the divine status.

And the Demon Clan was expelled to Ninth Hell.

The entrance was sealed with Penglai Drawing

to return peace to the Three Realms.

Recently, the barrier of the Ninth Hell has been loosened,

allowing those demons to escape.

Right now,

we can only count on you and Duanmu.

Return to Penglai as soon as possible after taking care of those demons.

My Lord, rest assured.

We won't let Penglai down.

Sect Leader Duanmu, are you saying that

the recent turmoil in Qifeng City

is caused by those demons

that escaped from the Ninth Hell to the mortal world?

That's right.

I, Duanmu Cui, have been ordered by the Heavens

to come down to mortal world to capture those demons.

I'm sure the emperor in your world

has already received the divine notice.

The Imperial Astronomer did recently

bring up the divine notice from Penglai to His Majesty.

But those details you said

were not mentioned.

If what you say is true,

I would like to ask you

to collaborate with Qifeng Prefecture.

It's hardly a collaboration.

Qifeng Prefecture enforces law,

while Xihualiu captures demons.

We are just doing our job respectively.

Immortals like me are generous.

I am fine with it as long as your sheriff

doesn't slow me down.

So you are an immortal.

Specifically,

you should address me as High Immortal Duanmu.

This is Duanmu's first time in the mortal world,

as she doesn't know the ways of this world,

she will have to count on you to take care of everything.

Look after her for me,

especially her body.

If there is anything wrong with her body,

let me know immediately,

got it?

What do you mean by

anything wrong with her body?

I sealed up Duanmu's love debt back then,

so that she would suffer less from love.

She would suffer from the heartbreak from love

if the chest of her love debt is broken.

Rest assured.

I will do my best to take care of High Immortal Duanmu.

Also,

Duanmu is naive and innocent.

If there is any man takes a fancy to her,

you must break it off.

You must stop it

before she gets hurt.

Understood?

Understood.

As you command, sir.

I brought

Duanmu some gifts.

You keep it for her.

Alright now.

If there's nothing else,

I should return to Duanmu Residence now.

I don't care what immortal you are,

but you are involved

in more than one case,

you are not to leave

until you're cleared of suspicion.

Suspicion?

I'm here to testify in the mountain demon murder case,

not to be trialled.

Whether you are a witness or a suspect,

it will only be determined once the case is closed.

Insolent!

Well played, Lord Zhan.

You have tricked me

into coming here.

I didn't mean to trick you,

I am just doing my job.

I have to be cautious.

Just doing your job, right?

I, Duanmu Cui, will take this as far as you want to go.
