From the time we
land in Morocco,

it's the top-of-the-line

villa, La Mamounia.

Three bedrooms, we
had a private pool,

we had a
24-hour butler.

It was around
$7,000 a night.

We went to all of the
stores in the city and just kept
shopping.

- Anna has this idea.

She wants to go to Morocco
and shoot a documentary

about the creation

of the Anna Delvey Foundation.

NARRATOR: But what
Anna didn't realize

was that her reign
as a German heiress

was coming to an end.

HAWK: She really
wanted somebody

to document
her extravagant

lifestyle choice.

I agreed to follow her
around with a camera

and document bits and
pieces of her travels.

One of the strangest
things about Anna

from the very beginning:

I just remember that
she didn't have any money.

Anna would give
her debit card

to someone and they
would run it and say,

"Oh, it was declined,"
and she's like,

"My bank said it's
a security issue

with Morocco. They can't just
send the money immediately."

The day before we
were checking out,

the concierge hadn't
received any money.

- Surprise, surprise--
Anna's card didn't work

and was not able
to pay for the hotel trip.

NARRATOR:
Anna's friend Rachel

was pressured to
foot the entire bill.

She figured Anna would
pay her back later.

- I remember
Rachel saying,

"I swiped my card
for $62,000."

SHAMSIAN:
She charged it

to her Vanity Fair
card. It's a whole big mess.

Anna says, "Of course,
you know, I'll pay you
back."

PALMER: After this
trip of fantasy

to Marrakesh,
reality really hits.

Anna has no money,

and she's really
kind of lost her best friend.

- Rachel had reached out to Anna

to pay her back.
Anna did not pay her back.

NARRATOR: Anna's
persona was unraveling,

and her lies were starting
to catch up to her.

Rachel, now gone.

Anna was alone.

PALMER: She goes to
the Parker Meridien

and she goes to a
little restaurant there

and orders two
salmon sandwiches

and four glasses of wine.

And it comes out to
something under $200

and she doesn't have the money.
They call the police.

SPODEK:
Anna wound up handcuffed

and it snowballed from there.

NARRATOR: It was more
than two sandwiches

that got Anna in trouble.

SPODEK: The Financial
Frauds Bureau

at the DA's office is receiving
complaints from people.

As they're investigating,
they realize

it's really not, you know, petty
crime that she's committing,

but really large-scale
grand larceny from

various financial
institutions.

REPORTER: She posed
as a wealthy heiress

to defraud New
York hotels,

banks and
fashionable friends.

REPORTER 2: Authorities say
she owes nearly $300,000.

NARRATOR:
On December 18, 2018,

Anna goes to court.

The charges:

several counts
of grand larceny,

attempted grand larceny,

and theft
of services.

- Anna was offered a plea deal
of three to nine years,

and she thought that
that was too much time for

what she'd done.

SPODEK:
I represented Anna

throughout her criminal case.

Anna said, "We're
not taking the plea."

And ultimately,

we went to trial.

And the entire
world is watching.

REPORTER:
This is probably not

what Anna
Sorokin imagined

doing things her
way would get her.

She was so concerned
about how she looked in
court,

she actually
hired a stylist.

PALMER: You have all
the tabloids come in,

and then you have Anna, who's
coming into court every day

in these
designer clothes,

and not looking
sorry at all.

- She had an epic
meltdown one day,

when the outfit she
was anticipating

didn't show up.

- Each day, the
tabloids are coming in

and they are reporting on
what she's wearing

or if she's
had a meltdown.

SPODEK: As the case
is progressing,

some of the stuff
is very problematic.

They got into her phone and
they got into her computer

and her e-mails
and we were stuck.

There's just no
way about it.

NARRATOR: Anna had
left a paper trail,

and the game was over.

- So, on April 25, 2019,
Anna's found guilty.

- The so-called
"fake heiress of New York City"

is headed
to prison.

REPORTER: She was
sentenced Thursday to serve

between four and 12 years

on four counts
of grand larceny

and four counts of
theft of services.

- According to the jury,
she successfully stole

around $270,000
from the banks.

REPORTER: In fact, it's
one of the most severe
sentences

that she could
have gotten.

REPORTER 2: Judge
Kiesel indicated that she
wanted

to send a message.

The attempted larceny
was around $22 million

that she tried to get from
these financial institutions.

But they found her not guilty
of scamming Rachel Williams.

NARRATOR: Because
Rachel willingly chose

to cover the Morocco trip

on her credit card,
the jury acquitted Anna

of defrauding her friend.

Anna Delvey was sentenced

to four to 12
years in prison.

She's currently
an inmate

at Albion
Correctional Facility.

- Seeing that lots
of affluent white men

who were older were taking
advantage of the system,

she took advantage
of the system.

NARRATOR:
In Anna's mind,

she was beating
multimillion-dollar
companies

at their own game.

She just happened
to get caught.

- Lots of other
venture capitalists

do this all the time.

That same skill set could create
a Fortune 500 company

and employ hundreds
of thousands of people.

If you talk to Anna,
she absolutely had a plan

to create the Anna
Delvey Foundation.

- She didn't have
the ability to do it

in a legal and
ethical way.

She did her way.

NARRATOR: In an interview
from prison, Anna said,

"The thing is,
I'm not sorry."
