Original subtitles

[young man, softly] "What do guys say when they come over?"

"I usually go to their place."

"Besides, it's not like I'm going to see them again."

"Basic technique's not really that different."

"I'll take your word for it."

"You married?"

"You're not?"

"I am."

"Do you still have sex with your wife?"

"I do."

"But you have sex with men?"

"I do."

"So you're bi then?"

"When did you figure out you were gay?"

"I'm not gay."

[footsteps on stairs]

[woman coughs]

[train rumbles]

[train noises stop]

[keys rattle]

[narrator on TV]

Hey, how was it?

[young man] How was what?

[father] How was he?

[young man] Fine.

Well, can't be much of a date. You weren't gone long enough.

-[door slams] -[shower runs]

[footsteps approach]

[knock on door]

[father] Hey, mate. I'm heading out for the date.

Listen, I don't know how long I'll be,

but I'll try and message you.

Wish me luck.

[footsteps recede]

[indistinct announcements over loudspeaker]

You've got my name on your heart.

-What? -Your jumper.

Oh, right.

Good one.

We're in English together.

-Yeah, I know. -Ah.

[Tommy] Cool.

[train approaches]

[belt buckle rattles]

[zip unzips]

[horn honks]

[phone buzzes]

[door buzzes]

[door closes]

[man] You can put your stuff on the table.

Do you want a drink first?

[Sequin] No.

Nice view.

[man] Close it.

How do you want to do this?

Take off your clothes.

God, they don't normally look like you.

[Sequin] What?

[man] The guys who respond.

[rumbling, echoing soundtrack]

[man sighs]

You're so beautiful.

So fucking beautiful.

[soundtrack grows louder]

[abrupt silence]

[distant echoing moans]

How old are you?

[Sequin] Eighteen.

How old are you really?

[Sequin] Sixteen.

I should go.

I could get this place again for us.

I don't really do that.

[man] Do what?

See people twice.

[man] Right.

People, or just me?

Everyone.

That's just how it works.

[door closes]

[woman] Obsession.

There is a clear relationship between the notion of love

and the notion of obsession.

From the earliest of writings, we see absolute present,

not only within romantic love...

-[phone buzzes] -...between person to person,

but even with unrequited love,

ever burning despite the expressed indifference.

But what happens when an obsession is unattained?

We are positioned in these texts to believe...

-[phone buzzes] -...that the active, persistent

pursuit of love, our obsession,

-is a sign of passion. -[phone buzzes]

Heathcliff to Catherine.

Francis to Nicholas.

-Darcy to Elizabeth. -[phone buzzes]

Ripley to Dickie.

Even further, darker,

Humbert to Lolita.

But in each example, love, affection, attention,

be it Platonic or sexual,

is attained through active pursuit, strategy.

-[phone buzzes] Now, by next week,

we will be discussing the tropes further.

So please be ready with examples...

-[bell rings] -...and discussion points.

-[dog barks] -[door buzzes]

[entryphone clicks]

[door buzzes]

[echoing metallic clanking]

[bell dings]

[techno music]

[pounding drumbeat]

[techno music continues]

[voice inaudible under techno music]

[ethereal music]

[phone buzzes]

[father] How was your night?

Good.

Really good.

What's going on?

There's something different about you.

Come on. Tell your old dad.

-Nothing. -Bullshit.

You know, I...

I don't need to know all the details

of what you're up to out there.

I know you're not getting anyone pregnant.

So, no worries, right?

Because you'd tell me, wouldn't you?

If there was anything I needed to worry about?

[school bell rings]

[teacher] Tropes of a love story

are usually used to emphasize the connection

between two people.

Tropes like distance, war, betrayal.

-[footsteps] -Can anyone here

name some great love stories,

fiction or otherwise?

And we can examine the tropes present.

Oh, um...

Twilight.

[quiet laughter]

[teacher] All right, that's enough.

Twilightis actually brilliant

because the very genre itself lends to the conflict.

You've got Edward the vampire, Bella the human,

and immediately you see the obstacles

their love will have to overcome.

-Yes. -[girl] Titanic?

[teacher] Separation of class. Just as profound.

[boy] The English Patient.

[teacher] There we have it all. War, distance, class.

[boy 2] Brokeback Mountain.

[teacher] Separation from self.

Two different lives keeping the lovers apart.

Can you all open your books to page 117?

This is a letter from author Penelope Gompel

to her lover, Sebastian Moore.

So notice how she emphasizes how time works

under the influence of love.

Uh... Henry, if you don't mind.

[teacher walks across room]

"My darling, you have left me hours ago."

"On one hand, my atoms ache with the pain of eternity."

"On the other, I am still drunk,

as though the champagne you poured last night

just reached my lips this morning."

"Many things linger there."

-[lover reciting with Henry] -"Spaces behind your kneecaps."

"The distance from shoulder blade to shoulder blade."

[lover] Are we even apart?

I trace my lips, and you are there.

I trace my jaw and you are there.

I trace my neck, and you are there.

Does my memory take you by the hand?

Does it lead you to the fire?

I want your mouth.

[bell rings]

[sighs]

[both breathe heavily]

[toilet flushes]

Tommy.

From the train.

Yeah, I remember.

Right, I wasn't sure if you...

What are you doing after this?

Going to class.

No, I meant...

after school.

Oh, undecided yet.

Yeah.

Uh, a few of us were thinking of going to the movies tonight.

Some cheesy love story.

I'd rather die, but we thought it'd be a good way

to knock out this assignment.

Might even smuggle in some Vodka Cruisers.

Whoa. Well, have fun.

Well, would you like to...

I dunno, can you join us?

Are you asking me on a date?

No.

I mean, yeah.

I could.

-OK, um... -Really? Awesome.

I mean, cool.

[bell rings]

So I'll see you there then. In class, I mean.

Yeah.

[door buzzes]

[buzzes]

[phone buzzes]

Can't believe I saw you last night.

We should go there together...

We should go there together next time.

Let's do this.

[groans]

[sniffs]

[man sighs loudly]

If I knew that was going to happen today,

I would have prepared better.

[Sequin] I should have gotten in touch earlier.

I didn't see your messages last night.

Didn't think I'd be able to take my phone in.

When's the next one?

Tuesday.

[Sequin] Is it every Tuesday?

Do you go every time?

Yeah.

[Sequin] Do you know everyone there?

No.

[Sequin] Is it the same people each time?

No, that's the point.

No names, no contact, no strings.

[Sequin] Then how...

I thought you would have liked the anonymity.

I thought that was your thing.

[Sequin] It is.

Good.

That was really good.

We'll have longer next time.

Get dressed. I have work.

[key turns in lock]

[water runs]

[man] Next time, we'll use the other place again.

Uh-huh.

[man] Maybe I can even get you a key made down the line.

Hm-mmm.

[man] When are you free again?

[Sequin] Hmm.

[man] It's closer to your school

so it's easier for you to get to.

How do you know where I go to school?

[man] You wore your uniform last time.

I don't think I did.

[man] You nearly ready?

I need you outta here in 20 minutes.

[door closes]

[phone buzzes]

[phone buzzes]

[phone buzzes]

-[door closes] -You're home early.

How was school?

-[door slams] -Great chat.

[phone buzzes]

[phone buzzes]

[phone buzzes]

[father] Hey. Want me to order something?

No. I'll make something soon.

[father] Can you hurry up? I'm hungry.

Yeah, a second, Dad.

[phone buzzes]

[teacher] Transgression.

Different to the love genre where the reader,

emotionally engaged, watches from the sidelines.

In this genre, the reader becomes the protagonist

as they debase themselves simultaneously

by choosing to stick with a text,

even if it walks down paths of violence,

sexual criminality and selfishness.

When the characters choose to engage in this,

the reader chooses to keep reading.

What is transgression but an attempt to understand?

It is no coincidence that the majority of characters

within the transgression genre

are on the search for betterment,

be it betterment of the self

or betterment of the society around them.

These are the questions

often explored through these characters,

allowing us to test our limits.

[phone buzzes]

Arthur Miller investigates these human qualities...

[phone rings]

Just a minute.

Hello? Yes.

-Now? Hm-mmm. -[students chat quietly]

Thank you.

[footsteps approach]

[raps desk]

Your dad's here. He needs to see you at reception.

-Mydad? -[teacher] Come on, now.

Back to it. A. Still stuck in with A.

[nearby chatter]

[intercom chimes]

[chiming continues]

[feminine voice] Hey, hello.

[clears throat]

[masculine voice laughs evilly]

[laughter grows louder]

[masculine voice] Sorry, come on up.

It's level four, door on the right.

[door buzzes]

Well.

This is Sequin.

I'm Charlize.

Well, Charles, but with them, I'm Charlize.

[voice echoes]

[deeper voice] I'm Virginia.

Let's show them how you got that name.

[voice echoes]

[mischievous laughter]

[Charles] Are you looking for someone?

[Virginia] We perform at a club on the corner.

[Charles] You're old enough to drink, right?

[laughter echoes]

[syncopated dance music playing]

[Sequin] I should get going.

[Charles] Sequin, you haven't even bought anything yet.

How about a little sample?

[Virginia] Charles.

[Charles] Hush, Virginia. She can make her own choices.

I mean, that's why you're here, isn't it, on B's recommendation?

[slowed-down voice echoes]

[dance music plays over dialogue]

[echoing voices]

[heavy breathing]

[sighs]

[chuckles]

[gasps]

[sighs]

[chuckles]

We like you.

I like you guys, too.

[Virginia] Do not roll your eyes at me.

[Virginia and Charlie arguing indistinctly]

[dance music continues]

[phone buzzes]

[buzzing continues]

[dark soundtrack playing]

Are you OK, sweetie?

You're just freaking out.

[distorted voice echoes]

[siren wails in the distance]

[door closes]

Hey.

Jesus, mate.

What the fuck are you thinking coming home at this hour?

Look at me.

You look like shit.

Where have you been?

[Sequin] Sorry, Dad, I...

What?

Where have you been?

Sorry.

I don't have time for this now, I've got to get ready for work.

We're gonna talk about this tonight, do you hear me?

[father exhales]

-[phone buzzes] -[switch clicks]

[knocking at door]

[father] Hey, I'm sorry I got angry this morning.

I don't care so much that you're out late.

You've just gotta check in with me.

I think I give you a lot of freedom,

more than most kids your age.

And I know you're trying to figure yourself out,

and that's OK, I trust you.

You've just gotta text me now and then so I don't worry.

I'm not asking for much, am I?

Anyway, I'm glad you're safe.

Love you.

[zips bag]

[phone buzzes]

[door opens]

[door closes]

So you're Sequin.

Go take a shower.

I want you clean.

No, no, no, no.

Leave it open, in case anything goes missing.

That's why you're here, isn't it?

To steal my phone?

Get in the shower.

[Sequin] I think I should go.

Why?

[Sequin] I'd like to leave. Please.

Don't you want to know his name?

I know it.

I know all their names.

Now, get in the shower.

[shower runs]

Soap.

That's enough. Sit down.

[shower stops]

Touch yourself.

[heavy breathing]

[moaning]

Fuck! Fuck!

Fuck!

[sniffles]

Bye, now.

You said you'd tell me his name.

F.

What?

That's his display name.

F.

[door closes]

[father] Mate, you aren't in your room.

Where are you? We talked about this.

[phone beeps]

Where are you?!

You can't keep doing this to me, mate.

-Call me now! -[phone beeps]

Call me now!

Some man just showed up at the house looking for you.

This guy is twice your fucking age.

What the fuck is going on?

[phone beeps]

You either talk to me, or you don't come home.

[phone beeps]

Can you please just call me back?

[phone buzzes]

[music plays over dialogue]

[door slams]

-[pounding house music] -[crowd whooping]

Hi.

Sequin?

Oh, Sequin, you've got to go home, honey.

Dad kicked me out.

Come on. Come on.

[sighs] Looks better. Put this on it.

-How'd you sleep? -OK.

Drink. Hot tea. It'll make you feel better.

You want to talk about it?

[Sequin sighs]

I just got caught up.

I just wanted to find this guy.

I don't know how it got turned into such a big deal.

I just wanted to see him again.

It's crazy.

I don't even know anything about the guy

except that his display name is F.

F?

Charlize was arguing with that man Ben about you

and someone named Edward.

-Edward? -Yeah.

Do what you have to do,

but I really don't think you're going to find

what you're looking for.

[train rumbles]

[laughs] Press "stop." No, no, no, no, no, no.

That's not very edumacational.

[laughs]

Me, oh, so brill, yo.

[laughs] Tell you my edumacational...

[laughs]

[instrumental rock ballad]

[music plays over dialogue]

[music fades]

[man] Hello. How was work?

[men converse indistinctly]

[door closes]

[Virginia] So, how did it go?

-Honey... -I'm fine.

It's OK, baby.

Listen, you can stay here as long as you need, OK?

But you got to do one thing. You have to call your Dad.

-I can't. -I know.

I'm sorry, but you've gotta be the better man.

And it won't go well, but you'll regret it if you don't.

OK?

Yeah.

And listen, Virginia will be here for you.

I promise.

Dad, I'm fine.

I'm at a friend's house.

I'm OK, I promise.

[birds twitter]

[father] I know you're going through a lot at the moment.

[birdsong plays over dialogue]

You know I love you, right?

Don't you?

I don't know what to do.

It's OK.

It's OK. We can work it out.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

[sighs]

[Virginia] How'd it go?

He's coming to get me.

That's...

That's great.

See?

Not so scary.

Can I come back, though?

Oh, honey, any time you want.

[microwave door opens]

You can sit.

What's that?

Assignment guidelines, and I got you one, too,

because I figured you'd have no idea what that even means.

Thank you.

What did you end up renting?

I already told you, Twilight.

I thought you were joking.

I wasn't.

I actually really love this movie.
