Court Lady

Ep52

How is His Majesty?

His Majesty...

His Majesty has suffered from strokes for years.

Recently, because of the Crown Prince and King Han,

he got inflamed many times,

which did damage to his organs.

So, at this stage,

it is inadmissible to use strong medicine

to stimulate His Majesty to wake up.

Given that, my advice is that

we use mild medicine to replenish His Majesty's vitality first.

So, it means that

His Majesty will be in a coma for longer.

Yes.

What are your opinions?

Perhaps we can use acupuncture therapy

to wake His Majesty up first.

Can you make sure that it is safe for His Majesty?

Well...

I can only promise to do the best I can.

So, you are saying that you are not so sure?

If anything goes wrong with His Majesty,

can you afford to take responsibility?

How about you?

I agree with Doctor Yan.

The health and safety of His Majesty are priceless.

We'd better not take any chances.

This is some prudent and reliable opinion.

What are you to forbid us from seeing His Majesty?

The Hall of Nectar

We must see His Majesty today.

-She's right! -Yes.

Why do you forbid us to go in?

We must see him.

Please go back now.

We are just following the orders.

Who are you to tell us to leave?

Exactly.

What right do you have?

Who are you to tell us to leave?

Husband and wife share the same mind.

Now that our husband is ill,

we want to take care of him.

Who gave you the right to get in our way?

She is right.

Of all the nerve!

I gave them the right to do it.

Your Highness.

I know that

you care deeply about His Majesty.

But with all the noise here,

you are affecting the recovery of His Majesty instead.

If your service is needed,

His Majesty will send orders himself.

Dear sisters,

you know that I am always softhearted.

But His Majesty

trusted me with this huge Harem.

I have to be responsible for His Majesty.

So, please show me more understanding and sympathy.

Your Highness is in charge of the six palaces.

We follow your orders with sincere conviction.

Then, you should go.

Guihua,

do you know a palace attendant

who is responsible for purchasing rouge?

The one with the access token.

Can we trust him?

He is like a big brother to me. We can trust him.

Go find him right away.

I need him to go out and do something for me.

What is it?

Tell him to go to Duke of Lu's Mansion quietly

and ask them to send a man

to find Matron Fu in the Temple of Grace at once.

They need to tell her

to find any excuse to stay in the Temple of Grace

and not return in any case.

Understood.

It's done.

Thank you, Lord Yu.

Young Master Yu.

Attendant Huang, what are you doing here?

Attendant Cao,

His Majesty wrote several orders.

Lord Yu, as Director of the Seal-keeping Service, has already sealed the orders.

We are just about to send people out to issue them.

No rush.

His Majesty said that these orders shall not be issued for now.

They need to be taken back for some revisions.

You can hand them over to me now.

Please excuse me.

I thought His Majesty is ill?

How does he still have the energy to revise the orders?

Father, I am back!

Father.

Father.

I am here, Father.

Father?

I only went away for a few days.

How did my father get so ill?

His Majesty came down with a relapse of stroke

and fell into a coma out of the blue.

Out of the blue?

Who was there at the time?

His Majesty was seeing Consort Yan at the Hall of Nectar at the time.

And then, he fell in a faint while talking.

With my mother?

His Majesty was blinded by treacherous courtiers when ill.

Before he called in me and Yu He,

he had already prepared the orders to

deploy the Imperial Guards at every station

to take away King Zhou's power.

Without the love and trust of His Majesty,

King Zhou will end up being driven away from Chang'an

and going back to his fiefdom.

Thank you, Attendant Cao, for intercepting these secret orders.

Otherwise, there would be trouble.

Through all these years,

I only dare shake my head and sigh in disappointment when no one else is around.

I didn't dare say anything.

King Zhou has suffered wrong!

Those treacherous flunkies are only jealous of His Majesty's appreciation for King Zhou.

Attendant Cao, you have shown great loyalty to our country.

Now that His Majesty just fell ill,

Your Highness must steady the overall situation,

and appease the public.

Meanwhile, look out for the flunkies who want to take advantage of the chaos.

It is so hateful that

Sheng Chumu even deluded King Qin to stand against King Zhou.

Unfortunately, His Majesty happened to fall in a coma,

which gave him a perfect chance now.

Though King Qin was deluded by that flunky,

he still needs to return home.

As long as we keep the door open for him,

we can wait until he gets back to get him right.

Get out of my way!

I want to see my mother!

Get out of my way!

Father had an abrupt stroke.

Was it because of you?

Seeing His Majesty lying there

at his last gasp,

I felt as if a knife were being twisted in my heart.

He is your father

and also my husband.

He is the man who slept by my side for years.

Do you really think

your mother

is a monster that has no humanity at all?

Master, why are you staring at General Sheng again?

Stop here.

Today, we camp right ahead

to have some proper rest tonight.

We will arrive in Chang'an tomorrow.

Let's have a break here.

You nobles are accustomed to delicacies of every kind.

Today, I'll treat you to some game.

Then, we will depend on your archery.

General!

Have some water first.

General, the wound seems to have gotten worse.

The village doctors haven't been so satisfactory on the way.

You should go back to Chang'an earlier to see the imperial physicians first.

I need to escort King Qin under orders.

How can I give it up halfway for such a minor injury?

I can wait until I hand over the mission after we get to Chang'an.

Understood.

I told you!

You are always yelling and screaming.

Why can't you just act like a king?

Matron Fu, why don't you discipline him?

Matron Fu?

Why are you staring at General Sheng as well?

It is true that General Sheng is good at archery.

But he just loves to show off,

which is annoying.

It turns out that you dislike General Sheng as well, Master.

Then, I think I also dislike him.

I will tell on him to my father once I get back.

I will tell my father

he doesn't guard me properly and

only cares about shooting birds.

No, you can't.

It is only a minor flaw to show off.

General Sheng is valiant and astute.

He is a hard-won talent.

You should try to see the good side of him, Your Highness.

General Sheng,

my teacher really admires you.

You...

You sneaked up on me.

Here. I came to send the game to Your Highness.

Thank you.

Xiaolu, let's go.

Come on.

Valiant and astute.

A hard-won talent.

But you missed one word, handsome.

He is so handsome that he takes people's breath away.

I...I need to go to take care of King Qin.

Please suit yourself, General Sheng.

She called me Chumu in the cave but all of a sudden

it's General Sheng again.

Smell this.

Who is it?

Junhui from Duke of Lu's Mansion.

I need to speak to Matron Fu about something urgent.

Concubine Li wouldn't let me go back to the palace?

She says that you will be in danger if you go back.

How is His Majesty?

No one knows for sure.

We only know that his illness is urgent this time.

We haven't seen His Majesty for a long time.

It is spreading panic in the court.

If His Majesty is unable to attend to government affairs,

the most powerful man in Chang'an

should be King Zhou.

Junhui,

I want to talk to Chumu alone for a moment.

Chumu...

I know what you are going to say.

My answer is no.

Chumu,

don't stop me from going back to the palace.

You are completely unarmed.

I am the general who leads the army.

If I don't want you to go back,

then you can't go back.

Because it's dangerous?

Because it's dangerous?

Because I care about you.

However...

Are we going to run away again?

We ran away from it before.

We discarded our families and our country

and only thought about

building a sweet life for the two of us.

But during that time,

there wasn't a day

when we didn't live in guilt and regret.

Chumu,

you know it in your heart.

We are not those who run away from responsibility.

You can take the risk to go back to the Palace

and not let His Majesty and the late Empress down.

Your conscience will be cleared.

But what about me?

I can't go into the Palace with an army.

I will just be out here worried about you all the time.

What do you expect me to do?

But...

You did the same thing to me before.

Nonsense.

In Anxi Gorge.

Fu Tao told me that

you could have escaped on your own.

But for your men,

you gave up that chance.

That's why you were surrounded by enemies

and almost got killed.

When you made those decisions,

did you think about me?

Of course, I did.

Do you care about me?

Yes.

But still, you chose

the most dangerous path.

If you do care about me,

you should prioritize your own life

instead of keeping me worried.

It's different.

As a general,

how could I leave my soldiers and run for my own life?

If I really had done that,

what a general would I have become?

This is the Sheng Chumu I fell for.

Even though you always make me worried,

I like you for it.

Chumu,

what about you?

If I do something that makes you worried,

will you still like me?

Of course.

After all, you are just a stubborn woman

who always makes me worried.

So, you still gave up

those tender and virtuous fine ladies

and chose to like me.

Whether it's in Guangzhou,

in Great Mount Cang,

in the pirates' hideout,

or in the Temple of Grace,

you showed up every time.

Every time I was in danger,

you would come to save me.

Chumu,

this time,

let's not run away from it again.

Bravo!

General Dugu.

Not running away from it! Well said!

I have already known about Chang'an.

If there is anything fishy with His Majesty's illness,

we need to find out the truth as soon as possible.

If Matron Fu can go back to the palace,

she will be of great help.

What about her safety?

I will take care of it.

I am in charge of the Imperial Guards.

If everyone plays by the rules in the palace,

I won't be able to intervene.

But if anyone breaks the rules

and resort to forces

to murder others,

I will teach them a good lesson.

Thank you.

Do you have the warrant of Consort Yan?

I have the access token to go out.

The rules have been changed.

From this day forward,

one must obtain a warrant granted by Consort Yan to pass.

I need to go out to purchase charcoal.

I don't care.

You can't go out without a warrant.

You...

Your Highness.

I heard that we must have a warrant granted by you

if we want to go out of the palace.

There has been a theft in the palace.

We need to be more cautious.

I wonder what's so important that has been stolen.

Wei Song.

Yes.

Are you questioning me?

I dare not.

But the rules were changed

just because of one theft. Wouldn't it be too...

After the late Empress passed away,

you started to serve in the Hall of Bliss.

Have you ever heard of

a palace attendant there called Zhihe

who was dead?

Yes, I heard about it.

That night a thunder strike caused a big fire

and burned him to death.

There were chains on Zhihe's burnt body.

I am afraid he was murdered.

Your Highness,

Zhihe made a mistake.

It was Consort Dowager Wang who ordered me to lock him up

for later punishment.

Consort Dowager Wang is gone.

Don't you use her as an excuse!

Attendant Yu.

You locked Zhihe up in secret and contributed to his death.

You will not get away with it.

Take my order.

Your Highness.

You served the late Empress before.

So, I think especially highly of you.

Today, I will call in all the people here

for them to hear about your crimes

in case anyone brings it up later

and says that I am hard on the favored servant of the late Empress.

Take him down.

Yes.

Your Highness, Consort Yan has got something on Attendant Wei

and is calling people together to punish him in public.

Have you heard of it?

Last time, after Lady Jiang was slapped by Consort Yan,

she went back and killed herself.

Who is it in the carriage?

King Qin is not feeling well.

He needs to get in and see the doctor at once.

Please.

Thank you, General Dugu, for your work.

You won't need to go into the palace.

Please go back and have a good rest.

What do you mean by it?

I don't understand.

If you don't understand my words,

at least you should be able to understand

what's written right here.

His Highness is not feeling well. Open the door right away.

Have a good rest, Your Highness.

Please excuse me.

His Highness is sleeping.

Don't wake him up.

Understood.

Wei Song is in charge of the Hall of Bliss,

but he caused the death of Zhihe.

Directress He,

do you think he should be punished?

Yes, I do. And he shall be seriously punished.

I am never an arbitrary person.

If anyone disagrees with me,

he or she can speak up now.

If no one says anything now

but gossips behind my back later,

I will not tolerate it.

Your decision is fair and reasonable.

We dare not to gossip about it.

Good.

Go ahead.

He shall be caned 100 times.

Yes.

Wait a minute.

Your Highness.

Matron Fu,

you came to join us as soon as you got back from the Temple of Grace.

Don't you feel tired?

I am the matron of the six palace services.

It is within my duty to execute the rules in the palace.

According to the rules,

before any punishment,

the culprit shall be questioned first.

Wei Song,

do you plead guilty?

I followed the order of Consort Dowager Wang

and punished the palace attendant who made a mistake.

I didn't do anything wrong.

I am not guilty.

You followed the orders?

Do you have the written instruction of Consort Dowager Wang?

Attendant Yu, you have served Consort Yan for years.

When Her Highness gives orders,

how many of them are in the written form?

I suppose most of them are usually verbal orders.

How dare you!

How dare you make this about Consort Yan?

I am just asking questions by common sense.

Why are you all worked up, Attendant Yu?

You...

Matron Fu,

I am fair and just.

How about this?

Now that you say Wei Song is not guilty,

you shall put forward evidence.

Then, I will spare him. What do you say?

Consort Dowager Wang already passed away.

I can't present any evidence to prove

the innocence of Wei Song.

Then, you should step aside.

Wei Song,

you breached the rules of the palace and tried to quibble

by blaming it on the late Consort Dowager Wang.

You will be punished

with a severe penalty.

You will not be caned 100 times but 300 times.

Do it now.

It's severe enough to cane him 100 times.

Why would you raise it?

What do you think, Directress He?

You are right, Your Highness.

He tried to talk his way out of it and dishonored the dead.

We should punish him harder.

This is what the directress of the six palace services said herself.

I told you not to come back, but you just wouldn't listen.

Now you even contradicted Consort Yan.

Your Highness, you are trying to kill him to reinforce your authority.

To manage the Harem, I need to take every chance to strengthen my authority.

If I want to punish him,

you won't be able to save him.

You're not in charge of the Imperial Guards now.

Please hand over the seal, General.

Is this the order of King Zhou?

His Majesty has ordered King Zhou to assist with state affairs.

This is known by all the courtiers.

But King Zhou has no control over me.

How dare you defy King Zhou's written order?

King Zhou's written order?

Can it overthrow the written order granted by His Majesty?

His Majesty?

This is written by His Majesty himself.

Attendant Cao, you should be able to recognize it.

Read it carefully.

I guard the pivotal area of Tang and bear a heavy responsibility.

In case of any mishap,

all the transfers or relocation

shall be enacted only under the order written by His Majesty himself.

No one else will be able to transfer me.

I don't take orders from any king.

I only take orders from His Majesty.

General,

His Majesty is old now.

A new emperor will take over the country, sooner or later.

No one will act like you, who can't take a hint, General.

Only the toughest grass can stand the strongest wind.

The capital is of great importance.

To redeploy the guards of the gate,

I am afraid this written order alone is not...

General Xu,

now that His Majesty is gravely ill,

the status of King Zhou is unprecedentedly high now.

Do you want to defy King Zhou's written order?

Well...

This is not something serious.

It is the same to guard the west gate or the south gate.

You are a sensible man.

Think about it yourself.

As His Highness wishes.

The 100 cavalries only take orders from His Majesty.

The troop won't be dismissed without the order from the Emperor.

General Sheng,

you are disdaining the written order of King Zhou.

Is King Zhou the Emperor?

Not yet.

But he might be in the future.

If so, we can wait until then

for him to give me orders.

How dare you say...

Guan Xiaoquan, you little brat!

It is you again!

The general already said that

we shall follow the flag

and act with a shared mind

at the same time and pace.

Go take your punishment of 20 canes!

Yes!

You didn't get frightened, did you?

Our general is strict with all the soldiers.

That's why His Majesty thinks much of him.

Keep practicing!

Cane him 300 times with the heavier rod.

Yes.

Wait a minute.

One more time,

and I will punish you severely as well!

Your Highness.

The benevolence of God is shown in the grace of the higher-up.

My benevolence will not be granted to Wei Song.

The higher-up I mentioned

does not refer to Your Highness

but the late Empress.

Her Majesty was benevolent enough

to show forgiveness to Wei Song.

Nonsense!

How dare you mention the late Empress and dishonor her?

Take my order and arrest Fu Rou now!

Cane her 300 times harshly

to show respect for the late Empress!

Yes!

Mercy, Your Highness!

Matron Fu was just...

My mercy will not be shown to the ungrateful!

Go get her!

Yes.

This is the written order of the late Empress.

I defy you to disrespect it.

Why are you still standing there?

We take your order, Your Majesty.

The written order of the late Empress?

Why haven't I ever heard of it?

This was written by Her Majesty herself.

A copy of it is archived in the Hall of Joy.

You can have it verified all you want.

So, as for the order,

will you take it or not, Your Highness?

I take your order, Your Majesty.

Her Majesty was benevolent and merciful.

She left an order of pardon

to remit the punishment of one person.

Wei Song.

Yes.

This shows the mercy of the late Empress.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, you were benevolent.

I will keep it deep in mind.

Your Majesty were benevolent.

Your mercy will be honored by the Harem.

Take off the official robe of Directress He.

I demand your reason!

I only answered Consort Yan truthfully.

Why would you punish me?

You are punished not because you fawned on Consort Yan.

Manager Xu.

He Linghua took bribes.

It has all been recorded there.

Xu Senming!

You traitor!

Take her down

and keep her locked up.

Yes.

Get your hands off me!

Fu Rou, this is personal!

Get your hands off me!

Coerced by my superior,

I have also made many mistakes.

Given that,

I dare not expect to serve as the manager anymore.

Please punish me, Matron Fu.

I have already checked the records and files.

You have been serving as

the manager for five years.

You fulfilled your duty rather justly.

The duty of the directress is to rectify the misconduct in the palace.

It is of great importance.

When you become the directress,

you must be more cautious with higher self-restraint.

Did you say directress?

Congratulations, Diresctress Xu.

Thank you, Matron Fu.

From now on, I will act as a model for others

and rectify any misconduct in the palace.

It's time for your meal, Your Highness.

Your Highness?

Your Highness.

King Qin must have been in hiding.

He will bring trouble if we let him live.

We must find him.

If we report it directly, Consort Yan may be suspicious.

I have a solution.

The Ruyi is missing?

I clearly remember that

I put it in the ritual room myself yesterday.

But when I went to check again,

it was gone.

Is it possible that...

Some other attendant put it away?

No, it can't be.

They know it was your favorite

and it was given by His Majesty himself.

How would they dare to move it?

I'm afraid it was taken by someone who took advantage of your kindness, Your Highness.

They must think you dare not investigate it thoroughly.

Of all the nerve!

I must run a thorough investigation into it.

Listen carefully,

if anyone can find King Qin, he will be rewarded 100 taels of gold.

Search the place carefully!

Understood.

King Qin is missing?

How did it happen?

I should be asking you this.

You are the last one who saw King Qin.

Everybody saw that

I left right after I carried King Qin back to his room.

If you don't believe me,

I can give you the names of several witnesses.

That won't be necessary.

It's just Consort Yan

has sent men to look for King Qin.

Matron Fu, you won't stand in her way, will you?

Of course, I won't.

King Qin is missing.

I am also worried about it.

That's good.

-Search it carefully! -What are you doing?

Out of my way!

Get out of my way!

You can search the place all you want.

But why are you damaging things?

So what if we damaged some things?

As long as I can find the Ruyi,

I can even destroy the Sewing Office if I want to.

You...

How dare you say that?

Who is this long-tongued bitch?

How dare you?

Mercy, Your Highness!

How dare you call me bitch?

I must be blind.

I am the bitch.

What?

You will go tell Consort Yan on me after this, won't you?

I dare not.

Then why are you still on your knees?

I am aware that the Ruyi is missing.

Then, go look for it right away.

Yes!

Officer Sheng, where is your whip?

Your Highness,

it's right here.

Then, please.

Watch them carefully for me.

If any of them is so blind

that he breaks anything here,

whip him as hard as you can!

My mother said that

everything in the palace, no matter how small,

was given by our people.

We must cherish it.

It is important to find the Ruyi.

But it is also important to keep my mother's words in mind.

Your Highness is considerate.

You are a wise princess for our country

and a grateful daughter of the late Empress.

And you will be my lovely wife as well.

What are you looking at?

Go find the Ruyi right away!

Understood.

Go! Come on!

-Go. -Let's go.

The Palace Rewards Service

We are looking for the Ruyi under orders.

Get out of my way!

Why are you here so late?

Your help is already there waiting for you.

Our help?

There was a theft in the palace.

It's within the duty of the Imperial Guards.

General Dugu has ordered us to cooperate with the Housekeeping Service.

Guys,

watch them carefully

and cooperate with them nicely.

Yes!

It's rather late.

Please forgive me for the timing.

It must be an important thing

given the time you came.

I brought a man here to see you, Prime Minister Fang.

Come out.

Prime Minister Fang.

Doctor He?

Shu.

How is it going?

Matron Fu,

the search is finished.

Thanks to the help of General Dugu,

the six palace services didn't suffer too much.

What about the Flower Pavilion?

Concubine Li's place was also searched.

But it was fine.

Matron Fu,

you haven't slept last night. Where are you going now?

His Highness is not feeling well. Open the door right away.

Have a good rest, Your Highness. Please excuse me.

Get up now.

Hurry up.

The generals in Chang'an were redeployed

in case anyone stirs up trouble

when His Majesty is seriously ill.

Then, what about messing up the system of civil officials arranged by His Majesty?

What is it for?

As for those civil officials,

they are infamous.

It is only reasonable to banish them from Chang'an.

Fang Qianli is infamous as an official?

Your Highness...

I've heard enough!

I know what must be done and what must not be done.

I asked you to find a man.

Why haven't you found him?

Why do you want to find Shu Ziqi in such a hurry?

I need him for something.

You want him here right away when you need him,

but when you don't,

are you going to kill him with a cup of poisoned wine as well?

Are you still mad at me for killing Lianyan?

Sheng Chumu,

You drove Lianyan into a corner.

She can only be back when you are dead!

Who said that?

My boss told me that himself!

Lianyan used to live in General of Admiralty's Mansion.

Why did she leave without saying goodbye?

Who is the last person she met with?

It was my boss.

So, about her leaving this time,

it was your boss who told you again. How do you explain it?

Don't you think it's weird?

Sheng Chumu, don't you try to turn us against each other!

Do I need to do that to deal with you?

I won't kill you.

Because I don't want to see

the man Lianyan loved

get blinded by others.

Use your brain to think about it.

It's only a woman who died.

But you just won't let it go.

How can you achieve anything like this?

When this is done,

we must reward Ma Haihu

with a high position and great wealth.

You have my word.

I will keep my promise.

Doctor Zhang.

Yes.

In your opinion,

when will His Majesty wake up again?

To wake His Majesty up,

we can either use some strong medicine

or use the acupuncture therapy.

But both of them entail risks.

I have discussed this with Doctor Yan many times.

Doctor Yan thinks that we can't afford to risk harming His Majesty's health.

If you are allowed to use acupuncture,

how sure are you of it?

I suppose the success rate is 50 percent...

I remember that

to wake Consort Yan up that day,

Doctor Yan swore on his life.

Will you swear on your life as well, Doctor Zhang?

I have not the least certainty about it.

Since the doctor said that he has no certainty,

why do you have to give him a hard time?

If a doctor is confident of it

and is willing to guarantee it with his life,

will you allow him to have a try, Your Highness?

Of course, I will.

Then, good.

Doctor He.

Your Highness.

I have read the medical record brought by

General Dugu from the Imperial Academy of Medicine.

I am confident that with the acupuncture therapy,

I can wake His Majesty up for a while.

If anything goes wrong with it,

you can execute my whole family as punishment.

Now that Consort Yan has agreed to it,

Doctor He, please do your work.

Your Majesty.

His Majesty woke up!
