CHAPTER 1
THE BUDDING OF SPRING

"Nowhere does the heart beat as loud of
joy, nowhere is a song so sweet,

as in the forest in the light of spring!"

A wonderful spring!
All of nature is like it was enchanted.

It would surprise no one, if a siren of
the woods was spotted between the trees.

"Dewlap! Whitefoot!
Come here, it's night!"

"Come Star, come all the cows.
Hurry home!"

"Isn't this like a castle!"

"And you are like the maiden
of the forest, visiting the Prince."

"Over there is the chair of state!
The place for the maiden and the Prince."

"It's been two years since we last spoke

and now you're a fully grown woman!"

"Look at you. Such a tall lumberjack!"

"Will you take this,
in memory of the Prince."

My love, you are like a lingonberry

She loves me alone

"You run like a gazelle!"

"No, let's get back to the others!"

"Just one little dance,
before we part ways?"

It meant the maiden and bachelor
would fall in love!

A MOTHER'S GLANCE

"My mother smiled in her garden,
when she carried me in her heart."

but your sorrow and your pain."

The Koskela Farm was rich and
had been passed down

from father to son for more
than a century.

"I don't know why Mother stayed up
so late tonight."

"That's why I couldn't come sooner."

"The son of Koskela and a kitchen maid -
well, I never!"

No, how could she dream of
marrying the son of Koskela.

They were quite right in mocking her.

The following day, just after breakfast…

…the head of the Koskela family

lingered at the head of the table.

"I know where your Mother found
you last night! Shame on you!"

CHAPTER THREE
LIVING LIFE

"My homestead is by the river's edge,
the foam washes over the walls."

"All the rivers in the world rinse my sin,
to its current I give my solemn pledge."

"The farmer sleeps in his cabin so well,
under the covers,

but the lumberjack's camp is wet

by the dew in the field."

"Our freedom is worth a mountain of gold
even for that it won't be sold."

"Compared to us lumberjacks

the farmers are nothing but farmhands."

"You have the rest of the day off, boys!"

"Go off and be with your women!"

The Moisio Farm is a well-known place…

…as the masters have always been known

as rich, stubborn and proud men.

Much like the white foaming
Kohiseva Rapids.

Kyllikki, the daughter of Moisio,
is known far and wide

for there is no girl whose head is held
as proudly as hers,

and no youth can boast he has ever
received more than a careless,

passing glance from her flashing eyes.

"I bet you don't have the courage
to speak to her over there."

The next day, he passed the Moisio Farm
yet again on his way home.

"You have such beautiful roses."

"I was going to ask for one as a keepsake?
If it's not too presumptuous?"

"It's not customary at Moisio Farm to hand
roses over the fence to anyone,

even if it happens in other places."

"I don't usually ask for roses
over every fence."

"And I usually never ask twice,
even if it happens in other places."

"I would like to say something else
- if I may."

"You do as you like."

"I would just like to say,

that if you ever think that you gave
your roses too high of a value,

take a rose and put it here on the fence."

"I think they are very valuable, and the
person who hopes to have one

must also have the courage to ask
for more than flowers,

any tramp can do that."

One evening, a little later,

the lumberjacks sat around the campfire.

They were arguing
about an interesting question.

Would it be possible for someone to ride
down the Kohiseva Rapids on a regular log.

"You'd have to be crazy to try and ride a
log down the Kohiseva Rapids."

"It'll take you straight into
the jaws of hell."

"One man faced the dangers
and tried it many years ago,

but he ended up dead."

"I think they are very valuable, and the
person who hopes to have one

must also have the courage to ask
for more than flowers,

any tramp can do that."

One Sunday afternoon, a lot of people
were gathered on the Kohiseva bridge.

There was a rumor circulating,
that some men were going to try

and ride logs down Kohiseva Rapids.

It was the bravest thing
one could think of.

How did it all start?
Well, there was a bet made.

And now they will ride the log,
down the rapid river

pass this bridge and go down
the Kohiseva Rapids.

Just before the waterfall is where
they'll get off. They won't survive this!

"I, as a village elder,
will forbid this sort of thing!"

"I advise you to take the bet back. This
river has taken five human lives

during my time, and that's
more than enough for this village."

"This isn't a question about human lives,
Moisio. It's just something for fun."

"I take my bet back
- with you all as my witness."

"You are right, I admit in front of
everyone. But it's decided that today

is a day of courage,
and therefore I will not back down."

CHAPTER FOUR
THE DEED OF THE YOUNG MAN

"That flower glowed so red on my road,
brought for my loved one to show

I knew it well, from that flower's seed
only roots made of sorrow would grow."

He was now visible from the bridge.

"Here's the worst part!
He won't get out of the river alive!"

He was approaching the waterfall,
which he was to escape

by jumping on to the mass of timber
right before the brink.

"The victor of Kohiseva! Hooray!"

That night when Olof went home,
Kyllikki waited anxiously at Moisio Farm.

CHAPTER FIVE
KYLLIKKI

"Oh flower, oh scarlet flower thou
you bleedingly, glowingly red

my poor beloved knows you well,
when her tears are silently shed."

And so, at last they met.

She, the proud, and he, the strong.

They often sat and talked high
in the hills.

"If I was sad and had a true lover,
I would share that grief

and maybe he could give me some comfort."

"Life is so strange! Even my own life."

"So far, it's been mostly a fairy tale.
But now…"

"Why do you wander so much?

Shortly thereafter,
the lumberjacks arranged

a dance to celebrate the departure.

"Are you waiting for the one
who just went to the Moisio Farm?"

"Never let me see you again!"

"A daughter of Moisio has never yet
married a tramp!"

"You'll be back some day,

when you tire of wandering.
I will wait for you."

"I can't wait to get all the vagabonds
out of the village!"

"Well, what did Moisio say to the suitor?"

"The dance is over for tonight!
Let's leave!"

IN THE CITY

"Let me look into the darkness,
for in the abyss of life

flow its oldest, deepest springs."

"Shall I dance or sing for you?"

"Now don't you feel sad any longer!"

"Drink! And that's that!"

"Why are you like that?"

"Let me just love someone. Or don't you
think someone like me is capable of love?"

"Wait, let me call my friend here
and we'll have some fun."

"She's younger than I
and she just arrived…"

"You! Gazelle!"

"Are you old acquaintances?
Why don't you shake hands?"

"Yes, yes, that's right."

"Take a look at yourself,
so that you can see what you really are."

"Well what do you see? Should I tell you?"

Selfishness and desire!"

"Deceit and lies!
Jesting with the pure and holy!"

THE PILGRIMAGE

When the darkness comes,
when the wandering turns to bitterness

is when the wanderer returns
to his mother's hearth.

"Well, boy, do you
know anyone in the village?"

"In Koskela?
The old folk there died last spring."

There rested his beloved Mother…

"You are your father's son, Olof."

to my father's farm - Koskela."
