Box creek mine lies at the heart

Of the legendary leadville mining district.

Since the 1860s,

Miners have pulled gold worth an estimated six billion dollars

At today's value from the area.

But getting to the gold meant a constant battle with black sand.

In 1877, it was discovered the black sand

Contained large amounts of lead,

Giving the town of "leadville" its name.

Eventually, the black sand proved too much for the early miners,

Forcing them to move on for easier pickings.

But with modern technology,

Team turin believe they can extract the gold

The old-timers couldn't.

it's really hard to separate the gold from the black sand.

Without this equipment, I don't know.

I can't even imagine how we would have done it.

You know, we have the jig, we have the gold table

And we still have to separate the sand here.

Last week...

There's so much that it's packing our ripples.

...In a bid to beat the heavy sand,

Dave and nate increased the angle of the sluice.

So if we steepen it up,

The waters moving faster causes more turbulence,

Washes that black sand out.

And their fix got team turin back on the gold.

The changes the guys made was loose and it's opened up.

There we go right there.

That's some of the bigger gold that we've seen.

So, things are looking up.

And now, with even more black sand from the fan cut,

Dave must find a new fix and fast.

From clogging up the sluice box

Is to add hungarian riffles.

The riffles are wider

And the lip is welded on the top to increase turbulence.

In theory, this allows more time and room

For the gold to settle in the mats

And the black sand to wash away.

Build some hungarian ripples. Hopefully, it works.

Catch more gold.

We keep mining.

It's on mechanic, nathan, to fabricate the new riffles.

So, I got some hungarians I am gonna make here,

I got some angle iron, hopefully give it more of a flow.

It kind of swirls black sands or rolls it out.

Keeps the gold down inside the mats.

The most stressful part of mining is finding the gold.

Something breaks down, it's on me but pay's still coming.

We can easily get things fixed and start running again

But if you're on the front side, you ain't find nothing,

And there was a fella named sam, gary, he ran cattle on that ranch.

Upstream in those hills, they were mining.

And what they did is they sent some dirty water down

Onto mr. Dairy's ranch.

Mr. Dairy didn't like it.

So he walks up and he confronts the miners.

They get into an argument. Have a gunfight.

Kills the manager of the mine.

So mr. Dairy turns himself in

And the sheriff let him off

Because they said that he was insane.

So he goes back to the ranch.

He builds that lookout tower and he watched out over the miners

That became a national historic site.

They say there's millions of dollars worth of gold under that ranch

That will never be mined.

That's a big week. This week, we're running the hummocks.

You know, you start taking up everything that we are up against.

This pan right here, I mean, it's a frickin killer pan.

Because that one thing I do see out on the front line

So, it's up to us now to get as much gold as we can in the last few weeks.

When you take a group of men and put them in an environment

That's very stressful,

I want to prove that we can do it and still stay together.

I want to prove what this group of guys that I can mentor them.

I can teach them the ways of gold mining

And we can continue to remain as family.

It's been tough.

We are rolling dice right now,

That's okay, that's what we do as miners.

And at this point, I can't push no more.

It doesn't matter where we are at with the alluvial fan is,

The black sand sucks every bit of it.

And it's proof right there in that pan.

We have some material that we can scratch up

We are not walking away from colorado without 400-ounces.
