The Starry Night, The Starry Sea

- Episode 5

Wu Julan!

Go and buy some cheap vegetables from the market and make lunch! Then wash Grandpa's clothes!

Is this Wu Julan?

At noon today, let's meet at the island's mountain forest.

Okay.

Grandpa! Grandpa, you were looking for me?

It's nothing much. I just wanted to look at you.

I thought something happened, I was so worried!

Come, sit, sit. Sit.

It's been just the two of us for so many years.

When you were little, I still had the energy to take care of you.

But now, you're grown up. I'm not useful anymore.

The problem is, even though you're grown up,

you still don't know how to take good care of yourself.

You're always just like a child, thoughtless and heartless.

Grandpa, who's thoughtless and heartless?

Look at how the neighbors praise me! I'm kind and magnanimous, smart and capable!

Okay, okay.

I made a mistake because I'm old and muddled.

I just hope that you will one day do something amazing in the future.

There's one more thing that you must promise me.

I'm going to die soon.

After I die, you're not allowed to be too sad.

I want you to take good care of yourself.

Live on happily. Only that way, can I leave in peace.

Grandpa, what are you saying? Aren't we doing just fine right now?

Grandpa, you'll get better.

Promise me. Let me be at ease.

I promise.

Grandpa, I really wish time could turn back.

You'd still be the Grandpa that braided my hair,

and made me lanterns.

And I would still be that Xiao Luo that wouldn't grow up.

I also wish that could happen.

But... who can avoid growing up and turning old?

Wu Julan's identity is false, but our love is real!

He works at our house, right? After some time, we fell in love.

Xiao Luo,

I want to eat the food you make.

I'll go prepare right now. Wait for me here.

Xiao Luo!

Your hair has gotten messy in the back.

Wait for me, Grandpa! I'll be back very soon!

Wu Julan!

Wu Julan?

Wu Julan!

Xiao Luo.

Da Tou, why have you come?

A friend of mine from France brought me some chocolate.

I don't like sweets, so help me eat this.

Of course! I'm very willing to do this favor for you.

But I also want you to do me a favor.

I need to cook for Grandpa.

Who knows where that Wu Julan ran off to while I was out?

He hasn't even done what I told him to do yet.

Then didn't you find the right person if you're looking for me?

Tell me, do you want to have it cut in cubes, in slices, or in pieces? I'll take care of it all!

Give Grandpa this soup to drink. He'll definitely like it!

Grandpa!

Where is he?

Nurse, where did my Grandpa go?

He wasn't here when I came in. I don't know either.

Let's go out to look. He might be chatting with someone.

Did you see Grandpa?

No.

- Hello, did you see my grandpa?- No.

Did you see Shen Luo's grandpa?

No, we didn't see him.

- What's wrong, Da Tou?- Grandpa is gone!

What? Grandpa shouldn't have gone far. Let's look nearby.

Where could he have gone?

He didn't pick up his phone!

- Let's split up to search.- Okay. Let's go.

You... are Du Xiaolin's descendant?

It's been a hundred and fifty years, but you still found me.

A hundred and fifty years ago, you should have predicted

that this day would come sooner or later.

Hand over the spiritual pearl.

- Have you seen an old man, about this tall?- No.

Thank you.

- Have you seen Shen Luo's grandpa?- No.

- How did it go?- How did it go? - He's not in the market.

I've asked all the neighbors, but they all said they didn't see Grandpa.

Let's widen the search area and search the beach and forest.

- Grandpa couldn't have left the island.- Okay, let's split up.

A hundred and fifty years ago,

your ancestor, Du Xiaolin, used the most despicable methods,

but he didn't kill me.

Today,

based on what I saw of you,

I thought you'd have a shred of repentance.

But I didn't think that you'd still want to kill me!

You're the same as your ancestor Du Xiaolin!

You're also a despicable lowlife!

You're not worth a shred of my pity!

It's not like that! It's not like that!

After my ancestor harmed you,

he actually felt very guilty!

That's why he came to this island and created the Mermaid Festival!

It was to represent his intentions to pay you back.

He wanted to make up for his wrongs.

He also wanted to comfort you, whom he betrayed.

You just wanted to comfort your own conscience, right?

All of you are selfish and despicable, disguising contemptible deeds as kindness!

I will never forget the taste of being betrayed by you all!

I will never forgive you all!

I'm sorry. I didn't really want to kill you.

- It's because of Xiao Luo--- Shut up!

You still want to defend yourself?

I have a request.

My ancestor wronged you.

Even if you kill me, I am willing. But Xiao Luo--!

She knows nothing about this matter!

So, please, don't hurt her!

- Please!- Hand over the spiritual pearl!

Please spare her!

Because you are already old,

I'll spare you today.

Watch yourself from now on.

Grandpa!

Grandpa!

Grandpa!

Who are you?

Grandpa!

Grandpa, where are you? Grandpa!

Hello, let me ask you. Did you see someone this tall,

an old man about sixty or seventy years old pass by here?

No.

Grandpa, where are you?

Grandpa!

- Grandpa, where are you? Grandpa!- Grandpa, where are you?

Xiao Luo! Yisheng!

Hurry! Grandpa is here!

Grandpa, wake up!

- Grandpa!- Grandpa!- How is he doing?

Come, let me take a look.

- Xiao Luo!- Xiao Luo, wake up!

- Hurry and call!- I'll call for an ambulance.

Hurry!

- Grandpa! - Hello, is this the emergency center?-Grandpa!

Black wizard.

Are you okay?

- I'm okay.- That's good.

You're awake, Xiao Luo?

Xiao Luo, you're awake?

Xiao Luo, you're awake?

Don't worry, you're okay. You just fainted from being too sad.

Where is Grandpa?

- I want to go find Grandpa.- Xiao Luo!

Xiao Luo, calm down.

Grandpa is gone.

Actually, when we found Grandpa the other day,

he was already not breathing.

Xiao Luo, the dead cannot come back to life.

Don't be too sad.

Grandpa treated me and Da Tou like family when he was alive.

We will definitely help prepare his funeral.

Xiao Luo.

Xiao Luo, don't scare us.

Grandpa just left. Nothing can happen to you.

Xiao Luo. Xiao Luo!

Don't worry, I'm okay.

Grandpa was an optimistic person.

I don't want to send him off in bitter cold wind and pelting rain.

Also, I promised Grandpa,

that after he died, I would live on happily.

Why do you think Grandpa went to the mountain forest all of a sudden?

It doesn't make sense.

If Grandpa wanted to take a walk, he should have found someone to accompany him.

Also, there are so many people going in and out of the hospital during the day.

Abduction isn't very possible.

Then, that means Grandpa went to the forest on his own?

Maybe he was going to meet someone in the forest?

Dr. Jiang!

I brought you all of Shen Luo's Grandpa's things.

Thank you. I'll treat you to dinner later.

Hurry and see if there's any clues.

Perhaps we can find some clues in Grandpa's things!

Grandpa's final call was to home!

Xiao Luo?

No way.

I didn't pick up this call.

I left the house early in the morning.

But there's a record of an outgoing call, so that means someone picked up the call.

Could it be Wu Julan?

From yesterday afternoon until now, Wu Julan hasn't shown himself.

Then that means, he must have something to do with what happened to Grandpa.

I told you early on that there's nothing good about that guy!

Don't get angry yet. Let's find him and ask him first.

Okay, I'll go look for him with you guys.

Wu Julan!

Wu Julan, come out!

- Wu Julan!- He's not here.

What does this mean? This means he ran off with a guilty conscience!

Let's split up to look for him.

I'll go to the dock. We have to make sure he's still on the island.

Wu Julan!

Wu Julan!

Where have you been and what have you been doing from yesterday until now?

Were you with Grandpa last evening?

Wu Julan, say something! Say something! Hurry and talk!

You have no right to ask me that.

I'm only going to ask you one thing! Did you kill Grandpa?

- He's dead?- I'll ask you one more time!

Did you kill Grandpa?

No.

Wu Julan, stop right there!

What happened yesterday? Tell us!

- There's nothing for me to say.- Nothing for you to say?

It looks like you can't voice the terrible things you've done!

I'm telling you. We won't frame an innocent person, but we won't let go of a criminal either!

As long as you tell us everything, we won't make it hard on you.

Stop!

What?

You don't even want to bother to explain? Xiao Luo was kind and took you in.

Yet you repaid her favor with hatred and killed Grandpa? I'm going to punish you for Grandpa today!

Wu Julan, Chinese-American.

His permanent residence is New York.

He's a doctorate student in Chinese antiques.

He came here a week or so ago to relax.

We're not interested in who he is.

We just know that he's the culprit behind Grandpa's death.

A suspect! A suspect.

You suspect him, because you don't know him well.

Wu Julan is suffering from mild depression. The typical symptoms of depression is a state of mind that's weak and low in spirits,

slow in thought process, and being withdrawn.

So, I hope you won't make things hard on a patient ever again without proper evidence.

Oh! So that's the way it was!

After hearing this beautiful young lady, Wu Julan's behavior makes sense!

Pretty lady, what is your relationship to Wu Julan?

- Friend.- Friend?

What sort of friend?

Guess.

Guess what?

Let me tell you. Whether or not he is a patient has nothing to do with us.

There's no way to prove he isn't the one that killed Grandpa.

Based on what you said, doesn't that mean that you lack the evidence to prove you yourself didn't kill him?

What nonsense!

I'm not just Wu Julan's friend. I am also his long time psychologist.

I know him very well.

He definitely wouldn't do something as evil as murdering someone,

- much less kill an old man who has nothing to do with him.- I--!

I still have something to do. Goodbye.

How cool!

I really want to become the wine in her hand!

Jiang Yisheng!

You lost all common sense after seeing a pretty girl!

When did I do that?

According to that pretty doctor, your grandpa's death has nothing to do with Wu Julan.

Then Wu Julan acts strange because he has an illness.

What illness does he have?

Let me tell you. Wu Julan is the most suspicious in this matter.

Grandpa's final call was also to him. Besides, he disappeared after everything happened.

That solves all the problems.

- You don't have proper evidence. Stop framing people.- How do I not have evidence?

- Let me tell you, that girl just got your brain all muddled up!- What? I'm just logically analyzing things!

- Her words make sense!- What-- - Enough, stop!

Jiang Yisheng, can you do something for me?

What is it?

Lucas.

Please allow me to introduce my granddaughter to you, Wu Liangliang.

Liangliang came to the island to help you find the pearl on my orders.

Shen Luo's grandpa...

is Du Xiaolin's descendant.

But the spiritual pearl is gone.

Shen Luo's grandpa is dead now.

Shen Luo may be the only one that knows the pearl's location.

Her grandpa says Shen Luo doesn't know about this.

But I don't believe that at all.

Lucas, please, you must maintain restraint.

You must not expose your identity in front of the humans.

Avoid trouble.

Liangliang will stay here to help you. You can order her at any time.

There's also one more odd thing.

Yesterday afternoon, a black clad person fought with me in order to obtain the pearl.

He didn't expose his identity,

but I saw the fire tattoo on his body.

That year, the black wizard made use of Du Xiaolin's hands to obtain the spiritual pearl that belonged to the mermaid people.

But the sinister Du Xiaolin

used evil against evil instead, and stole the spiritual pearl from their possession.

It's been a hundred and fifty years; yet, they are still focused on the spiritual pearl.

Liangliang, you must quickly find that black wizard.

You definitely cannot let the spiritual pearl fall into their hands again.

That person is very seriously injured.

He shouldn't be leaving for now.

I'll go look right now.

Xiao Luo,

I know you feel awful now that Grandpa is gone.

If you feel awful, then cry. Don't force yourself.

Grandpa is gone, but you still have me.

I will take good care of you, just like Grandpa.

Just like when you used to take care of me.

Da Tou!

Da Tou, my grandpa made this. It's delicious! Try it.

What's there to be lofty about?!

Thank you.

During the coldest time of my life,

you were the one that gave me warmth.

I'll remember that warmth for the rest of my life.

Xiao Luo, I want to return this warmth to you now.

We've known each other for so many years.

After making a big circle, now we've both returned to the island again.

The same sea breeze, the same reef.

The people are the same.

Nothing's changed. I think we've come back again.

Let's be together like we were during our childhood, mutually supportive and warm. Okay?

Da Tou, you haven't rested all night. Hurry and go rest.

I'm okay.

Okay.

Then, you should rest early.

My ancestors wronged you.

So, even if you kill me, I am willing.

But Xiao Luo! She doesn't know anything about this!

How come your surname is not Du?

My grandfather's surname is Shen. My father's surname is Shen. So what do you think my surname is?

Angel's Trumpet is poisonous, but it's also medicine!

After once in a while, there's some medicinal businessmen who'll come and harvest them.

This batch of Angel's Trumpets can be harvested very soon.

It's at least enough to pay for some household expenses.

Mouthful of nonsense. Shen Luo must know where where the pearl is.
