Episode 4

Dad, I'm home!

Dad!

I called for you. Why didn't you answer me?

Have you no more respect for your father?

If today your teacher didn't call me

and told me that your file was transferred to the Public Security Bureau,

I still wouldn't know. Why didn't you discuss this with me?

Sorry, Dad.

I wanted to talk to you about it,

but I was afraid that you wouldn't support me.

Do you know why I wouldn't support you?

I'm afraid that you would come to regret your decision!

Joining the police? Let me just ask you one question.

Did you choose to become a cop because you like the occupation,

or to investigate the truth behind your mother's wrongful conviction?

I don't wish to obstruct you.

I just don't want you to give up your expertise for the sake of revenge.

I don't wish for you to throw away your own future

for the sake of uncovering the truth of the past.

You are so smart and have such a bright future.

You should be pursuing a career that you love.

That way you can have your own sense of accomplishment.

Father, let me give you my serious reply.

I have seriously thought about it before I made this decision to become a policewoman.

Not just for Mother's sake, it is my ideal career.

Besides, you know that I've always had a stubborn personality.

Going into the financial field and living the same life every day,

how boring is that?

It's hard to be the police.

It's dangerous when you are dealing with criminals.

You didn't even go through the police academy.

You're a young lady who majored in finance. Would you even be able to fare well?

Dad, I am not a criminal investigator police,

I am an economic investigation police. It's a new type.

It's very suitable for my finance and law majors.

It fights against economic crimes.

It can save a lot of people like my mom from being wronged.

Don't you think it's a really meaningful career?

Plus, didn't you say you'd like to see me in a police uniform?

I'd definitely look amazing in a police uniform.

Dad.

I'm sorry. I should have discussed this with you.

Rest assured. Since I've chosen to join the police as my career,

I will definitely give it my all and accomplish many things.

I will make you and Mom proud.

Come on! I've been so busy running around all day already.

I'm so tired! Can I get a bite to eat?

I have already prepared it for you.

Your favorite stir-fried chicken.

Giving Father a salute!

I've suffered huge losses, you know?

Yes, yes, yes.

Director Wang, calm down. I am responsible for this, too.

All right. Did you know?

Her one mistake...

cost me so much money.

Yes, we will treat this with the utmost seriousness.

Tell me. How are you going to make up my loss?

Director Wang, I don't have the authorization.

Who has the authorization then? Bring him over.

I...

- Director Wang. - Who is it?

- Why are you so upset? - Teacher Hao.

This is what happened. I wanted to buy some stock.

Guangdong Xinwen.

I told— She told this saleswoman

to buy 10,000 shares. Turns out,

she forgot a zero and bought 1,000 shares.

This stock is going up.

How much money have I lost?

Guangdong Xinwen.

Director Wang, Guangdong Xinwen did go up this morning.

But you must be able to tell that

its Stochastic Oscillator is way too high. Its

transaction amount is also unusually high.

Obviously, someone is manipulating it.

Based on my experience, it will go down by afternoon.

You don't believe me? Come on.

How about that? I was right. The market just

opened for this afternoon and look at that curve.

She was saving you money

when she left out a zero.

Blessed by misfortune, Director Wang.

In that case, it's really not a good stock.

Of course, sell your 1,000 shares as soon as possible.

Thanks to you.

- No problem. - All right.

- That's it. - Yes.

It was our fault. Let me walk you out.

I am sorry. I will do better next time.

Thank you.

Here, Director Wang.

Teacher Hao, thank you.

You don't have to thank me. Three people had their time wasted because of you.

This is not a place to fool around. You either do better or leave.

Oh my god, Sister Liu is so harsh.

She is nice. She just nags too much.

Xiaohui!

- You can go without me then. - Okay, bye.

What's wrong?

Are you okay? You're not hurt.

How can I get hurt?

Who was it? Why did you chase him all the way to our securities company?

Same old rule. No more questions.

How do you have time to pick me up with such a huge case?

I still need to get off work, don't I?

Especially since my wife was yelled at today.

I must come and comfort you.

There's a new movie opening.

Want to watch a movie with me today?

Or can I treat you to a meal?

How about this? I will give you a massage,

and I will cook you a nice dinner. Sound good?

Let's go.

Thank you.

- My goodness, we're home. - We're home.

You worked hard today. Here.

Rest here for a bit.

Let this keep you company.

Give me 30 minutes.

I promise to cook a feast for you.

I don't want to. I want you to stay with me.

We need to eat, don't we?

I am over 50 kilo. I am too fat. I need to go on a diet.

Don't say that.

You still need to eat. I will make you some vegetarian dishes.

No, no, no.

You worked all day and you carried me back home.

How can I let you cook?

I can't do that. Sit here.

I'll make it for you.

With the development of China's stock market,

the corporate and financial institutions

are not only breaking the record of IPO

but also using the Dividend Policy

through the capital market.

Wait! Don't change it.

Don't change it. Go back.

That one? This is the economics channel.

I am studying it.

Honey.

You have been dealing with it all day. Don't you get bored?

There's so much I don't know.

For those wise investors,

this market indicates that...

All right, let's watch what you want.

Give it to me.

Last month, the market...

Give me the apron.

Thank you. Let me watch this.

When our nation's market is mature enough,

the competitiveness...

Just watch.

It's an indicator of...

Especially considering the change in the currency this year

and the expansion of the market,

I believe that the competitiveness of China's market...

These stock analysts can talk,

but they're just playing the market.

You know, I was yelled at by a customer today,

but he saved me out of it when my boyfriend was not around.

Also, on a more serious note.

Is your work difficult?

Why did you get yelled at today?

No, it was my fault.

After starting work there, I realized

everyone is rushing

when it comes to money.

Customers yell at me every day, but I feel a sense of accomplishment.

Really.

Fine. No matter what,

you need to tell me if anyone gives you a hard time.

Keep watching.

Brother, I think this lounge is still not good enough.

I think we should rent a house.

We're just putting some computers in it. It's all the same.

Also, the fee for a VIP trading lounge is high.

It's estimated to be ¥40,000,

but it might go up to ¥60,000.

Are you saving costs for me?

I just think it's not necessary to spend all this money.

Answer me this...

Beijiang has so many business halls,

but over these years, why do I only come to this one?

Because the elders here believe you.

Liang'er, those elders and those recommended stocks

aren't important to me. They don't create any value.

Do you understand?

Seriously,

you have been working in the sales department for so long,

how can you not see this?

Brother, just tell me.

Why is it?

This is the head office.

It processes transactions faster than any other place.

Although those rooms are shaggy and cold,

they are closest to the server.

It has the highest speed of all the VIP trading lounges.

Buying and selling stocks

- depends on the millisecond, understand? - Brother,

I think these milliseconds are too expensive.

The old saying goes,

"The ones who respond fastest get the biggest meat.

The ones who respond slowest only get to chew on the bones.

The ones who don't respond at all like you get to pay the check."

Brother, I am with you,

so at least I can have a sip of the broth.

No problem. You will have as many sips as you want.

Go get some serious business done.

This guy. Ask around about him.

Ma Jianshe?

Introduced by Wang Bolin. He said we can reach out if we need help.

Why him?

Wang Bolin has been in Beijiang for years. His network must be wide.

We need this person's help to fill the fund shortage.

He used to be a leader for the National Development and Reform Commission.

Go find information on him.

It feels like something is missing.

We need to go through it again.

This all started with Qian Chen.

June 1st, director of Furong Pharmaceutical Factory, Qian Cheng,

kidnapped the owner of Kerui Pharmaceutical Company, Wang Bolin.

And then he jumped off from Wang Bolin's house.

Qian Cheng admitted he bought Kerui's stocks

when we were rescuing Wang Bolin.

He lost everything after the crash.

Qian Cheng's money was from his workers' fundraising a year and a half ago.

But Qian Cheng didn't purchase the stock directly.

He wired the money to Wanmahui Investment Company's public account.

That money was wired out through several transactions.

We are not able to track it.

The chairman of Wanmanhui, Ma Shicai, is confirmed to be missing.

Our people have searched around.

Other than the ticket that he bought

for America in a week,

there was nothing else.

Ma Shicai's wife lives in America.

If Ma Shicai is fleeing with a large sum of money,

he might be going to America to find his wife.

But his wife hasn't come back in years.

The hairband we found at Ma Shicai's home the other day

might belong to another woman.

She could be Ma Shicai's mistress.

She might also be

covering for Ma Shicai.

It's only our assumption based off of the hairband.

Right. What about Ma Shicai's family?

We went to his parents. They knew that we were the police,

so they were a little scared.

We didn't get anything from them.

We don't have any other leads now.

Master, I want to drop by myself.

Okay.

Let's go, Lei.

This is Ma Shicai's parents' home.

Hey, Sir.

Playing chess?

Your Temporary Residence Permit expired.

We are here to renew it for you.

These two are in charge.

It has expired.

I forgot about it. Please sit.

I will see you later.

Okay. Go ahead.

Please sit.

Mr. Ma,

do you like it here?

Yes. Not bad.

Have your two sons visited you this year?

Don't mention them.

The eldest one just passed away.

The little one came by a while ago

and took his older brother's ID.

He said he was going to cancel his brother's account.

He gave me ¥50,000 before he left.

I am an old man.

How do I need that much money?

All I ask is for them to visit me.

What can money do?

We are here to get to know your situation.

Little Zhao will renew your permit.

All right. We shall not bother you.

Little Zhao, bring it to Mr. Ma once it's done

so that he won't have to make the trip himself.

- We shall go now. - Okay.

- Take care. - Sure, goodbye.

Here.

Lei, have Little Liu look into information

regarding the account of Ma Shicai's older brother, Ma Shiyuan.

Brother.

It's Hao Xiaoqiang.

He is asking for me to send him cash.

I am here to ask you.

¥1,000,000.

Give it to him.

Tell him...

that I have notified Ma Jianshe.

It looks like

you have been fishing for many years.

Young man, you are interesting.

You can tell just by looking at me?

You sure live up to your title.

I shall cut to the chase.

Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Hao Xiaoqiang. I am a stock analyst.

I know you.

We've met.

That's why I found you familiar.

What can I help you with?

Honestly,

I want to open a new business.

At the same time,

help out our local businesses

and bring up their decreasing share price.

I think

it will be a good opportunity for our local businesses.

That's good.

What can I help you with?

I have been retired for years.

I have a funding shortage now.

I want to ask for your help.

Young man, you are quite funny.

I am retired.

You can submit your proposal to the government department.

After they review it,

if it's really beneficial to our city

and doable,

the government will support you.

All right, I understand.

I shall not bother you.

Little Liu, did you get what I asked for?

Yes, Brother Yuan.

This is the identity information of Ma Shiyuan.

It's not canceled.

Lei, check his ticket information.

Brother, he is dead.

Do what I said. Hurry up.

Hurry.

How is it? Anything new?

We are working on it, Master.

It's a ghost!

The dead man was on the train to Zhuhai yesterday.

Now we know where he went.

After Ma Shiyuan died,

Ma Shicai used his brother's ID

to take the train to Zhuhai.

So he booked the plane to America

to mislead us.

Highly possible.

Xia Yuan, contact Zhuhai Police right away.

Ask for their assistance.

We must bring Ma Shicai back.

Yes.

Chief Ma, I have been waiting for you.

Let's talk inside.

Chief Ma, I couldn't tell.

This building looks old on the outside,

but inside is done pretty well.

No wonder you are a leader.

So detailed.

Just say what you want.

I am straightforward. Let me cut to the chase.

My request is simple: ¥50,000,000.

I only need you to

connect me with the businesses who are willing to lend this amount.

All the transaction fees and interest fees will be calculated by the market rate.

It's all legal.

It won't implicate your business.

Also, to show my gratitude,

I will give you 15% as a commission fee.

If you trust me,

you can convert this money all into stocks and give it to me.

I will operate for you. I promise that

you will only gain money and it won't be traceable.

It won't bring you any trouble.

Have some tea.

Thank you, Chief Ma.

You must make sure it's legal.

Brother Yuan, a word from Zhuhai Police.

They searched the train station, airport, bus

stations, and all hotels within the city,

but they didn't find anyone who used Ma Shicai or Ma Shiyuan's ID.

Brother, there are many harbors in Zhuhai.

If Ma Shicai has nobody to help shelter or cover for him in Zhuhai,

is it possible that he escaped from the harbor?

Beijiang Zoo

Here.

Come on in. I need to talk to you.

Huh?

What it is?

Old Ma,

maybe you should go.

I feel anxious with you here.

Why is that?

The police are searching for you.

It's dangerous that you are staying here with me.

Let me tell you... The most dangerous place

is the safest place.

No one knows I am still in Beijiang.

I am not only running away from the cops

but also Wang Bolin.

Also, our family of three are all here.

Where else can I go? I am not going anywhere.

But you can't hide forever.

Once this goes down,

I will send you two out. But not now.

It's too risky.

See?

Moreover, with all these tigers as my bodyguards,

I am not afraid of anyone.

If...

the ticket to the U.S. is fake,

is he trying to go to Southeast Asia

by going to Zhuhai with his brother's identity?

Whether America or Southeast Asia,

we will be in trouble...

if he gets out.

As long as there's no evidence to show that

he has gone outside of the borders,

we must be prepared for both scenarios.

We can't stop investigating in the country.

As the saying goes,

"Everything requires going to the primary scene."

Go through his social connections one more time.

I did. I didn't find anything new.

What about the manager of Wanmahui?

Get him back and question him.

Thank you.

Sir, can you hold it for me, please?

Okay.

Keep the coffee, thank you.

Director Office

Chairman Office

Keep me posted on any updates.

Okay.

Why are you here?

Hello, Chairman Wang, we meet again.

You again? Who let you in?

I am waiting for you.

Waiting for me? What for?

Do you know who I am?

I do wish to know who you are and why you keep pestering me.

Then...

do you know Huang Yue?

I don't remember.

Huang Yue from Beijiang University of Finance

and Economics. How come you don't know?

Young lady, you are still young.

I have seen too many names in my life.

I don't recall this name at all.

I knew it. With your noble status,

I knew you would forget.

I am here to remind you today.

From now on, I will slowly help you to remember that name.

Huang Yue is my mother. My name is Wu Jiaqi.

The current-day Kerui used to be Dahua.

My mother was the person in charge of the reorganization and listing of Dahua.

How come you don't remember?

I guess it's not that you don't know her.

You are purposefully trying to forget.

Did my mom's death have nothing to do with you?

I better not find that you had anything to do with the Dahua case.

Otherwise,

I won't let you off the hook.

Chairman Wang, stop wasting time on her.

Let's call the cops and lock her up for a few days.

No need to bother.

I trespassed into your office.

Let me call the cops. Let's see who is more afraid of the cops.

Hello, is it 110?

Your local police station is quite busy during the day.

Don't mention it, Brother Lei. We are used to it.

Director Yang, the man you want is inside.

He got beaten up, and he called the police himself. Let me show you the way.

I called the police.

How long were you in that room?

Not so long.

- Lei. - Director Yang.

You go up first.

- Okay. - Go.

Brother.

Director Yang.

The girl next door, what did she do?

She called the police and said she trespassed.

Her boss disagreed and said it was burglary, so we brought her here.

She has something to do with my case. Can I question her first?

All right. Follow me.

I have told you everything. I didn't take anything.

Let's give a break.

This is Director Yang from Beijiang Criminal Investigation Division.

Director Yang, ask whatever you'd like.

Zhang'er, let's go.

- Thank you. - No problem.

Sit.

I know about your case.

What if they insist that you stole their trade secrets,

and you will have a record on your file?

Tell me what happened.

I can tell you.

Under one condition.

I want to talk. But I am hungry.

Do you guys provide meals here?

How was our canteen?

Pretty good, thank you.

Can you talk now?

I went to find Wang Bolin

for an old case.

Old case? How old?

From 12 years ago.

There was a Dahua trading case in Beijiang.

I don't know if you still remember.

1995, Dahua.

I never heard of it.

Back then, China's securities industry was starting to grow.

Many state-owned enterprises wanted to be publicly listed.

Dahua was a biotechnology public company.

They hired professionals to draft a shares reform plan.

Shares reform plan?

Yes. Unfortunately, the plan was leaked.

Someone heard the word and bought Dahua's stock in bulk

and gained from it. After that,

a lot of people went to jail. The longest sentence was 5 years.

So this case is closed.

Correct. It's closed.

But I suspect that the person who leaked the information

didn't face legal sanctions.

You suspect?

I have a suspect.

Qian Cheng.

That's why you were there

on that day when Qian Cheng committed suicide.

Yes.

But I think somebody instructed Qian Cheng to do it.

Wang Bolin might be

the one behind him.

Do you have any evidence?

I have my instinct.

Your instinct?

Director Yang, do you know

what the former Dahua is called now?

It's called Kerui.

Interesting.

Keep going.

That's how Wang Bolin built his business.

Back then, he bought

tons of Dahua's stock and got rich.

And then he increased his holding,

and became the biggest shareholder of Dahua.

He then got onto the board, and slowly

replaced the board members.

He became the CEO

and renamed Dahua into Kerui.

You know the rest:

Qian Cheng jumped off the building to his death.

This is why you suspect Wang Bolin?

The most suspicious person

is the person who will benefit from it the most.

Qian Cheng did not have a lot of money.

Even if he was the one who stole the information that year,

he did not have enough money to buy up all those stocks.

What's strange is,

after that, Wang Bolin always brought Qian Cheng around with him when he did business.

I think this is how Wang Bolin paid Qian Cheng

back for stealing the secret information.

Twelve years ago...

You were still a little girl, maybe four or five years old?

I think your family

was somehow involved in this case.

Director Yang, you have good instincts.

The person who helped them create the shares reform plan was my mother.

That's why people suspected she stole the information.

Why do you think the one who stole the information was Qian Cheng?

Because he was my mother's student.

After the incident, he started doing business.

I checked everyone who was around my mother.

He was the last person I suspected.

But he had already jumped off a building by that time.

I read your resume

and your police recruitment exam results.

You want to be a police officer,

so that you can investigate this case?

Even though this case is closed,

I think the real culprit was never punished by the law.

I have to find out the truth so that I can prove my mother's innocence.

It is such a pity.

You were just reported for burglary,

so you can't become a police officer.

Director Yang, I really didn't steal anything.

I am sure you officers will be able to find out the truth.

If you didn't come here yourself, it would have been really hard to find you.

I heard that you called the police yourself.

Didn't you come to find Chairman Ma a few days ago?

Right after you left, our clients found out our chairman fled.

They rushed to our office and asked to draw out.

We don't have enough money to cash out, so they beat me up.

Does Chairman Ma have any acquaintances in Zhuhai?

He's never mentioned that he knows anyone from Zhuhai.

We don't have any business in Zhuhai either.

You'd better tell me everything you know.

You won't have to deal with this mess once we catch Ma Shicai.

No one will come after you, either.

I would love to, but I really know nothing else.

He only asked me to book the plane ticket and cancel the account.

Plane ticket?

Yes.

Why didn't you tell us last time?

Show me your recent call history.

This one.

Call History

- Lei. - Brother.

Look up this number.

Find out where it belongs.

- Chairman Wang. - We meet again.

- Why are you here? - Work.

Right, they said that girl over there

stole things from you. What did she steal?

It's strange.

She broke into my office.

But when I checked, nothing was missing,

so I said to let it go. Then she called the cops herself.

Weird.

Have you noticed?

She has been after you

since Qian Cheng died.

Yeah.

I find that strange, too. Shouldn't you ask her about it?

I have asked her. She said it's for an old case from 12 years ago.

Do you know what that is?

- An old case from 12 years ago? - Yes.

I have no idea.

It's when Dahua changed its name to Kerui

and you became the chairman right afterward.

Yes.

Is there anything wrong?

Looks fine for now.

But we will find out if anything's wrong.

Little Wang, you know what I said.

Let her go if nothing else comes up. I didn't lose anything.

Don't leave a record on her file. It's inappropriate.

Sure.

- I will do what you said. - Okay.

- Director Yang, I shall leave now. - Sure.

Come and visit my office when you have time.

- Sure. - I have some nice tea.

- Okay! I'll wait for you to come. - Okay! Goodbye.

We look forward to it.

Master.

Where were you earlier?

Got someone out.

Who? Someone you know got locked up?

When did you become so gossipy?

Any updates on the case?

Director Yang, this is the lead we got.

This is the number Ma Shicai used

to call his manager four days ago.

I had Lei look into it. It's a local public phone within the city.

So he didn't leave.

He sure didn't.

The train he booked using Ma Shiyuan's ID

left at 10:30 a.m.

This call was made within the city at 2 p.m.

So he didn't leave.

He is quite sneaky.

He will be busted anyway.

Brother, what are we going to do with Wu Jiaqi?

Yang Jianqun was helping her. There's nothing much we can do.

Why did Yang Jianqun help her out? What's their relation?

It doesn't matter now.

What matters now is to find Ma Shicai.

Yes. I have sent out more people on it.

A Hong, our effort is not enough.

Figure out another plan.

What?

The police are looking for him, too.

Keep an eye on the police. You might find something.

Follow the police?

Brother,

you are a genius.

All right. Don't leave a trace.

Protect the animals, climbing over the fence is strictly forbidden

One bite for you.

And you.

Eat more, bastards.

Big one for you.

Fight for it.

All right, Old Ma, they are full. It's your turn to eat.

- Come on in. - Honey, you are back.

How was the pregnancy reaction today?

Bad. I want to eat sour food so badly.

And I am always hungry.

That's great!

The old saying goes, "Sour food craving is a boy, spicy food craving is a girl."

I will thank you forever if you can give birth to a boy.

What are you saying?

You wouldn't like a daughter?

No. I was just kidding.

It's just that my dad always wanted a grandson.

Come on.

Shicai,

my belly is getting bigger and bigger.

We should leave while we still can.

It's close. I'm playing the cops like a fiddle right now.

They must think that I have left Beijiang.

Once this is over,

our family will leave for good.

Eat.
