Some say it is combination of Five Ancestors Kung Fu

and Five Animal Kung Fu.

To understand Karate you must know Kung Fu.

To know Kung Fu you must understand Tai Chi.

(voice over) The Heian Katas were developed around a hundred years ago.

(voice over) They are based on a Chinese form called Channon

(voice over) The name Heian means Peaceful Mind in Japanese.

(voice over) The original word is Pinyan

(voice over) and in Chinese it means safe journey.

(voice over) Heain Shodan teaches you long fighting techniques of Northen Style Kung Fu.

(voice over) It uses a front stance for the stepping action.

(voice over) It teaches you how to block and attack at the same time.

(voice over) Its moves are based on Tiger Kung Fu

(voice over) and are some of karates strongest techniques .

(voice over) It uses the back or cat stance.

(voice over) and teaches you short fighting techniques from southern China.

(voice over) It teaches you to defend from attackers that are punching or striking

(voice over) which are within arms length from you.

(voice over) The techniques are blocks, punches and strikes and are most simliar to boxing.

(voice over) Its moves are based on the twisting actions of the leopard

(voice over) and the moves are found in Leopard Kung Fu.

(voice over) The twisting action is used to defend against hand and arm grabs.

(voice over) Teaches you how to escape and counter with an arm lock

(voice over) to trap or take down the opponent

(voice over) Its moves come from Chin Na

(voice over) Which is similar to Aikido, a Japanese martial arts.

(voice over)T The fifth kata or Heian Godan uses a horse stance or open stance

(voice over) to defend against being thrown.

(voice over) It allows you to stop a throw and counter with your own throw.

(voice over) Its moves are based on the action of the dragon

(voice over) and it is used in very close body to body fighting.

(voice over) The moves come from a Chinese throwing art called Shuai Jiao.

(voice over) Which is an early form of Judo.

(voice over) It is a five hundred year old form from China.

(voice over) It's older name is Naihanchi.

(voice over) It means internal divided conflict.

(voice over) No one knows its original Chinese name.

(voice over) It was a long kata that was split into three sections.

(voice over) The student is taught to stay in one stance

(voice over) but the key to unlocking the secret of the kata

(voice over) is to move the legs into the correct stances.

(voice over) By doing this the student learns that the arm techniques are the same

(voice over) but by changing the stance you change the meaning or the move of the application.

(voice over) In Tekki the moves are organized by levels.

(voice over) Middle, upper and lower.

(voice over) In the Heian katas the same moves are organized by type of self defense.
