Welcome to the first official day in the Octopus Explorer,

The deep water research station, Halcyon.

This is our bunk.

A tight little area,

still allows me and Robbie some room

to cozy up to one another.

- [Robert] What are you doing?

- [Daniel] Documenting the experience.

- [Robert] Aw man you're not seriously going to be

calling reveille the entire time we're down here, are ya?

- [Daniel] Every morning.

Reveille!

(Robert sighing)

(laughs)

- [Daniel] This is our command center.

Where we do the bulk of our work.

Today is our first full day here,

so we are just getting acquainted with our brand new home.

Ah and here's our friend Robert.

He isn't sleeping, he's working.

He's probably doing some logs,

and some real funky seismic stuff.

Hey Robert,

Robert.

Could you tell them exactly what you do?

- Sure Daniel.

Well it's imperative that we regularly monitor

our environment.

Since this is an enclosed space,

we have to make our own breathable air.

And it's important that we keep it

as close to the air on the surface as possible.

About 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen,

and less than 1% carbon dioxide.

The human body like it's air a certain way.

- Oh, I'm sorry.

What else do you monitor?

- Tank levels, hydraulic pressures, air pressure.

Now on to something a little more interesting.

This is our first full day at One Halcyon.

Robert's taking care of some maintenance right now,

and pretty soon we'll get some initial readings

on the environment,

and we'll really get an idea

of what we're working with down here.

- [Robert] Hey, do me a favor,

and start the distiller please.

- I almost forgot, I actually got a job down here.

We're at the end of a shift.

Been here about two weeks,

under 1,000 pounds of sea pressure.

Hell if it wanted to, it could crush us like a grape.

it kind of sounds alarming.

I guess it's not quite as interesting to you guys

as it is to me.

On the real, that ocean is a dangerous place.

Sprung a leak and the scrubber

is in need of emergency repair.

After two and a half weeks,

I finally have a purpose.

Well, you often wonder what daddy does at work.

This room is my primary responsibility.

We have to make our own water, air,

and keep things like carbon dioxide at reasonable levels.

That's what this thing does, or did.

Before it sprung a leak.

Now it doesn't do much of anything now

and daddy's gotta fix it,

or the Co2 builds, and that would be bad.

No problem, this thing could bring down a spaceship, kids.

I remember once I was working on an oxygen generator,

one of those things popped.

Daddy needed a wetwipe.

So I'm here thinking, a 37 centimeter ring,

can one day be responsible for an untimely demise.

This is kinda like your momma sometimes,
