A little bit longer

I ever thought

Would happen this season
is we'd lose jesse.

I usually am called
the "tin man"

Because I will never cry

Emotionally spent.

The only good part
about today is

We're back up and running,
and I can put my focus

On chasing this gold
for jesse's family.

we're all more determined

to make the season count.

the gold for jesse's family.

We wanna get it
for our families.

You know, it's supposed to be
our season.

Now, it's jesse's season.

whatever it takes.

To mourn the loss
of teammate jesse goins,

Team turin gets back
to business.

[dave] so we're running
from the doodlebug cut

But we're getting
some big rocks.

The good news is typically

Big gold runs with
the big rocks

Because it takes a lot
of energy to move big rocks

And that's where you find
the gold.

[narrator] dave's third cut
of the season, the doodlebug

Is downstream
from the mined out

Bank and vault cuts.

The ground was worked
in the 1930s and 1940s

By dragline buckets,

Which fed a floating
doodlebug dredge.

But dave believes
the old miner's technology

Couldn't excavate all
the gold rich rocky ground.

Leaving team turin
one last chance

Of a big pay day
at box creek.

[dave]
you know, the old timers

Got all the easy gold

And they've left
the more difficult gold.

The gold that's under
a lot of overburden

Or the gold
that they couldn't get to,

They've left that for us.

But we have an advantage
that they did not have.

We have hydraulics,
a lot of horsepower,

And that's what I love about

Chasing these old
abandoned mines.

[suspenseful music playing]

[narrator] to deal with the
rocky mountain boulders,

Dave's upgraded the roach
with last season's

Heavy duty hopper
and conveyor.

Boom,
drowsy to the freaking bones.

They just threw one
into the bed of the truck,

Damn near bounced it up off
of the ground, it hit so hard.

It sounded like king kong
in the truck.

Rocks are always a pain
in the butt.

They create a lot of wear
and tear on the machines.

It's hard to try and go up

Against mother nature
and that's what we do.

[suspenseful music playing]

[nathan] it's stopped,
it's stopped, it's stopped.

- The feeder's not going
on the hopper.

To the conveyor belt

Is not going.

About a quarter of it
got cut all the way off.

It looks like the other side
is the same way.

It's got cut mark in there.

There's a big rock
stuffed in there

That I might have
to get loose.

from the boulder filled pay

Has allowed a large flat rock
to slip through

The old hopper's
grizzly bars

And jam the conveyor belt.

You see how it's jammed
in there?

One giant rock
got caught in there sideways.

Hope it's not ripped

Back down to ninety yards
an hour.

We aren't gonna hit our goal,

Directly into the roach

With the 220 excavator.

[chris] well, as I'm sitting
up here on a... On a perch,

Takes a toll.

We're doing this for jesse
and his family.

And then, I started thinking
about my family.

Your heart starts aching
for the ones you love.

I've got a new wife.

We'll be married
for six months

And I've been here for three

So that makes it hard.

We start weighing out
the options,

Is this... Is this worth it?

We dig down deep inside
to find the energy

And the positivity
to keep begging,

[dirt rumbling]

chris is so grizzly up there

On that hopper
on the roach, man,

That ain't looking the best
right now.

without the old hopper,

The roach is taking
a full force

Of the doodlebug's boulders.

There's a reason why they call
them colorado rocky mountains.

And, I believe we found out,
it's already done damage

To our belt on the...
On the old hopper.

So they bounce off this
grizzly

And bend it all to hell.

[kc] gold mining is all about
controlling our environment.

We can't control
mother nature.

It's a rollercoaster.

It's hard on equipment,
it's hard on human beings.

And as miners
shouldn't just weigh out.

whenever we got to go

To keep getting further
from the source.

Knowing what we prospected
right over that hill.

those hammocks, dave.

to colorado

of the gold he found

And dave is no closer

To gaining permission
to mine in the hammocks

From the local community.

my son, my daughter,

We brought these guys,

Everybody knows
what's sitting over there.

is for his *bleep* family.

we get the hell out of here.

what we wanted to get.

You know, all we keep
on hearing is another day,

in the team.

a wrong damn map,

But we need something.

to the hammocks

Because that's the reason
we came here.

about my crew,

And hopefully, they'll let us
mine the hammocks."

[jason] without a doubt,

We're gonna need
a brand new belt.

There is no patch kit getting
this *bleep* together.

That's a damn good
finder out there.

[dave] so, nate,
we got to be careful.

That big a rock right there,

If that gets into the roach...

[nathan] it's done.

[dave] so we got to make sure

We should probably fix up
those grizzly bars

Because those grizzly bars
are getting spread.

It's not designed
for that big a rock.

Mother nature just dealt us
a huge blow.

Those big rocks are just
beating this plant up.

Problem is if I get one
like that big

Into the roach, it's done.

Season's over.

So I'm shutting
everything down

And fixing it the right way.

[engine revving]

[nathan] shut it down.

It's better to shut down
for a couple hours

Than a few days.

You got to do maintenance.

If you don't do it,

It's gonna bite you
in the ass.

[narrator] as nate makes
repairs to the conveyor,

Dave drafts in help
to fortify the roach

Against rocky mountain
boulders.

[dave] what we got to do is,
those are all bent.

So we're gonna replace the
bent ones with straight ones.

We got them all cut,

Lay them in here,
weld them up.

It should be
good to go tomorrow.

We're gonna put a deal
on the end,

So that they sit...
They sit in here

And they're...
They kinda move a little bit.

Problem is they're so rigid

That every time a rock
gets in there, it bends it.

So if it could slide
a little bit.

I think that should help it
from breaking.

We hope.

[narrator] the bent grizzly
bars leaves space

For larger rocks
to enter the roach,

Potentially causing
catastrophic damage.

In a bid
to protect the machine,

Dave will remove the old bars

And weld in a new set

Leaving the bottom edges
loose,

Sitting in a u-shape nudge.

This should allow
the bars room to vibrate,

And not bend
under the force of the rocks.

[nathan] you know it's nice
having boss like dave.

You know, he gets in there
and works right beside you.

You don't find many bosses
like that.

[dave] I think a good leader
is somebody

That leads by example.

If it's a difficult job,
if it's too hot,

If it's too dusty,
whatever it is.

If I won't do it,

Then I don't expect
anybody else to do it.

[dramatic music playing]

So all in all
it's not a bad day.

are making my life

A whole lot easier.

the new setup to the test.

There's not any rocks
getting caught up,

We're not getting any clogs.

The dirt is feeding
really well.

It was a great fix.

[narrator] dave has a mission
for wife shelly.

So we've lost the belt
on the feeder,

I'm gonna need you
to run to denver...

-...To pick-up the belt.

We got to spend it to make it.

Not ideal at all.

We got all this concentrate
sieve

And run through the table

And it's gonna put us behind
a little bit,

But in order to keep working
and operating,

We're gonna need that belt.

It's just been one struggle
after another for dave

And I'm very proud of him

For overcoming
all he's had to overcome.

Whatever the team needs
I'm willing to help

However I can, that's what
I'm here for right now

Is to support dave, the team,

Try to do what jesse
had done.

Big shoes to fill,
but I'll do it.

But shelly is filling in
the blanks.

She's doing a great job,

She's a hard worker.

on top of our pay.

Throughout the valley.

But overtime,
ice dams the rivers

Forming lakes
that filled with sand.

The heavy gold travels down
through the sand

And settles on bedrock.

But dave and jason
have no idea

How deep the sand is

And if the gold at the bottom

Is even worth
the cost of moving it.

How much deeper are we then...

What we're mining over there?

So, I mean, this section dave,

It's got another
18, 20 foot of dirt

-We got to move off of it.

I think what we should do
before you start

Excavating all this,
we better get a pan.

You better try to punch down,
see if there's pay,

Stop opening this big area up

then we're leaving.

really operate one

Just isn't bad enough
if there's no gold down there.

Gold, rides an iron horse.

So it's an indicator

That where there's
iron staining,

There could be gold.
