plus this display case is
wired to an alarm system.

It would have gone off if
the case was tampered with.

security team and us.

- We've got to take

saying that the exhibit's

that there's been a problem

and there's not a

because the theft occurred
not only under our noses,

but under Mr. Joyner's

It was under bank surveillance

that maybe the document wasn't
stolen out of this case?

Maybe it was never

- Well, the protective
encasement is still here,

and it would be my guess
that whoever stole it

would realize how fragile

such a very old piece
of paper would be.

- [Helen] So?

- So why would they take it out
of its protective encasement

and then take the
time to reseal it

and then leave it behind?

Let's take a look at it.

We can't do that.

We have to wait for Dr. Arguff
to arrive from Washington.

- We don't have time.

powered by this battery here

through the encasement

and the display case looked
like the real deal, huh?

[monitor buzzing]

- The real document could
have been stolen at any time.

This was the first
stop on the tour.

- Okay, why would anybody
go through all the trouble

of switching out the real
declaration with this

when all they
would have to do is

take the original
document and run?

They could be anywhere on

spent that night in the bank,

and then the declaration
was put on display

for the public the next morning.

- So, as you can see,

the container containing
the document is handed over

to your CSA agents
who then take it

and they carry it inside,
directly into the main room,

where, then, it is placed and
locked in the display case.

- Who's that guy?
- That's Don Henkel.

He supplied the display
case and this alarm system,

as well as the additional
security monitoring devices.

- Oh. Could you freeze the tape?

- [Clarence] Mm-hm.

- How did we get Henkel?

- He's a security
systems expert.

The bank's used him for years.

He installed all of the
original security for the bank.

- And all the additional
surveillance systems,

just for this exhibit.

- What do we know about him?

- Quiet guy.

Really knows his stuff.

- Oh, he's a genius.

Well, with things electronic.

- Hm.

All right.

Any idea where he
might be right now?

- Well, most likely,
he's at his office.

He's a real workaholic.

- How much do we know
about his guy Don Henkel?

- Well, he designed
the display case

and the alarm system
that went with it.

- Well, it kinda puts
him in the ballpark

of being a suspect, but-

- It doesn't convict him,

but he's more than capable
of designing the device

that everybody thought
was the real document.

- Really?
- Yes.

- We should make a house call.
- Frank.

- Yeah?

I hope I'm not
interrupting anything.

- [Frank] No, not at all.
- But I think I found someone

who might shed some
light on this case.

- Really?
- Yeah.
A man named Donald Henkel

who designed the
security alarm system

that's attached to
the display case.

He might know something.

- [Frank] That's good thinking.

I'll get the search warrant.

Neighbors say he hasn't been
around for a couple days.

Works out of his home. Must
be a pretty small operation.

- Well, his file says
that he's a one-man band.

Doesn't have to worry
about the integrity

of the staff that way.

[Frank sighs]

- Oh, she works for me.

I remember when I first
started working for the CSA,

you and I became just friends

till you went to Ireland
with Marge Redmond

and became just
friends with her.

national treasure is at stake,

He rigged a fake document
so no one would know

That gives him a
pretty big head start.

EPIC database at headquarters.

actual declaration arrived,

Henkel set up his
display case as planned.

He never realized he was
gonna become the fall guy

in your elaborate scheme.

Meanwhile, your electronics
and computer genius Clarence

was putting the
finishing touches

on his ingenious
plasma screen mock-up

of the Declaration
of Independence.

At about 4:30 in the
morning on Saturday,

Clarence put his plasma mock-up
of the declaration in place.

And then he videoed
what appeared to be

about two minutes of the
declaration in place.

- Okay, roll it.

[camera whirs]

[camera whirs]

Okay, cut it.

- On Sunday, the real
declaration was delivered

when Dr. Arguff and a
host of dignitaries,

including the
mayor and yourself,

watched it being placed and
secured in the display case.

Photographers even
recorded the event.

And then, on Monday at
exactly 4:30 in the morning,

Clarence switched the real
declaration with the fake one.

For three days, everyone
thought they were looking

at the real Declaration
of Independence.

No one would have discovered
the real declaration was gone

until it was finally removed

to be sent to the next stop
on the tour next month.

But you switched off the plasma
image after only three days

because you wanted the
theft to be discovered,

'cause it was never
about the declaration.

While everyone was busy
running all over LA,

concentrating on
finding the declaration,

you were gonna be able to rob

the bank completely unhindered.

When the security
video was reviewed,

it appeared as if no
switch had been made.

- Yeah. Go on.

- You know what the
problem was though?

- Pray tell.

- The clock.

When I viewed the security
video for the 50th time,

I finally saw something.

The time on the clock
seemed uninterrupted

until I enlarged the picture

and then the second hand
skipped back 20 seconds.

You didn't count
on that, did you?

- No, I didn't.

Good for you.

- Yeah.

The plasma screen mock-up was
a brilliant move on your part.

Not only did it appear that
the declaration was in place,

but when it was
finally discovered,

it made Henkel look
like he was responsible

for the ransom demand, hm?

- It worked.
- Yeah. Yeah.

And attaching yourself to me

so you'd always stay
one step ahead of us?

That was good.

Shooting yourself
for my benefit...

- Guilty as charged.

- But the part I don't
understand is why you weren't
content

with the 20 million
-dollar ransom.

where it really gets good.

See, what you don't understand

is that this branch of the bank

doles out all the money
for the other branches,

so the 20 million-dollar
ransom was chicken feed

compared to the 200
million that we're taking.
