unsolved case has terrified me,

elisa was influenced by an evil,

As far as the cecil hotel,
this is the first

and the last time
that they will ever

allow anybody to walk into
that building with cameras.

a murder or two, not like this.

on the cecil hotel.

Can you tell me a little bit
about elisa lam?

Elisa lam was a 21-year-old
student from canada.

She came down here
on a vacation.

21-year-old elisa lam
was last seen nearly

three weeks ago at the hotel.

Surveillance video
from the hotel's elevator

show her acting unusual,
as if she's hiding from someone.

Then lam disappeared
January 31st.

The baughs never saw lam

but knew something
at their hotel was off.

There was something wrong.
The pressure in

the water was terrible.
The shower was awful.

The hotel's maintenance man
responding to guest

complaints went to check
the four rooftop tanks

that feed the building's
main water supply.

On the 19th of February,
her body was found

in the water tank
up on the roof.

It made me feel really
sick yesterday and until now,

knowing that we've been drinking
this water for eight days.

It was a huge story at the time.

And there are many suggestions
and theories

as to how she got up there,

why she was up there,
what happened.

And that continues to today.

I cannot wrap my brain
around how she died.

I mean, when you watch
that elevator footage,

is she talking to somebody else?

Was there somebody involved
in her death?

February 2013,
an autopsy is performed.

On June 15th, elisa's death
is marked as an accident

on the coroner's report.

Three days later on the 18th,

it is abruptly changed
to could not be determined.

Before the report
is released to the public,

it is once again changed back
to the original finding.

Elisa lam's death
is ruled as an accident.

So much mystery surrounding it,
you can't help but introduce

the theory of what
has made this hotel

have one of
the darkest reputations,

and that's the hauntings. Yeah.

This entire building will be
closed to the public

during our investigation.

that she was on.

and I'm trying to know exactly
what floor she was on

by matching up patterns
in the background here, a wall.

inside of the actual elevator

So in this footage, you could
see elisa lam in this corner.

She was like hiding
from somebody.

She then stepped out.

Who was she talking to out here?

She was standing here, she had
weird hand movements right here.

Her fingers were spread apart.
She was moving in weird ways.

Patrick used to work

as a crime scene photographer
for the lapd.

which was elisa lam's room.

Elisa originally shared a room
with roommates,

but they complained
about elisa's strange behavior,

forcing her to move
into this room alone.

A former lapd crime scene
photographer,

who's witnessed
countless horrific events

that would traumatize
the average person,

just left this interview
due to the force of evil

this building contains.

to go onto the very roof
where the water tanks are

How did elisa access the roof
when this door is locked

and alarmed at all times?

to this same dark presence.

on the 4th floor where

jay tells us he heard noises
in the hallway

while we were on the 14th floor.

I kept hearing
crazy noises in the hallway.

So I just went and looked
and there's nothing.

There's a couple blind spots
that I can't see on camera.

So I just wanted to check
and I see nothing.

I quickly grab the sls camera

to see if I can spot
any figures in the area.

Elisa, are still here
in the elevator?

Are you inside the elevator?

Is anybody inside the elevator?

Aaron and I are blown away
as the elevator door opens

and a clear figure
is standing inside.

while aaron rushes to elisa's
room to use the spirit box.

And I decide to take
full spectrum photos

in the hallways
outside elisa's room.

He was playing something called

where you try to do a ritual
in this elevator

and open up a portal.

come on here with him,

he could feel their presence.

As you can see in this
first photo, nothing appears.

But in the second photo,

a dark shadow figure
appears to the left.

And as I take the third photo,
it gets closer to me.

Here are the photos
taken in succession.

At first we thought
it could be my own shadow.

However, there is
no light source behind me

that could be
projecting this shadow.

We are not able to explain
this dark shadow figure.

After adjusting the brightness
and color of the photos,

this unknown shadow figure can
be seen much more distinctly.

As the night wears on,

jay continues his investigation
of the elevator

where elisa lam was photographed
just moments before her death.

I want to know if elisa's spirit

This is a chilling response.

is even more disturbing,

by unseen forces.

that we never went on
to really learn the details

of all the other
countless murders,

suicides, and hauntings.

The cecil hotel
was built in 1924.

With its lavish marble lobby,

it was a destination for
travelers from across the globe.

But just five years
after its inception,

the united states sank
into the great depression,

sending the cecil
and the surrounding area

into a downward spiral,

plunging the hotel
into darkness.

Over its eight decades
in existence,

this structure has seen
unthinkable tragedy.

There has been an astonishing
18 known deaths here.

Even the black dahlia was seen
at the cecil hotel bar

just three days prior
to her gruesome death.

The cecil was home
to serial killer richard ramirez

during much of his horrific
killing spree.

And jack unterweger,
a serial killer from austria.

Jack unterweger
preyed on prostitutes,

some just blocks away
from the cecil.

The cecil hotel is cursed.

To prepare us for our
upcoming lockdown,

we've invited local
historian scott michaels,

who is well versed
in the multitude of deaths

here at the cecil.

where countless lives

This was the room
of helen gurnee.

There it is. This is it.

In 1954, helen gurnee literally
stepped out of this window

and she landed on the marquee
directly below.

at this window

with those last moments.

And I believe those moments
can stay in a place like cecil.

and they feed and they grow.

feeling that you feel

So what we're doing while
we visit these rooms, aaron,

is taking electromagnetic
field measurements

down the readings

several sinister stories

about this place, obviously.

But I think the most bizarre,
sinister story happened

with a man
that was staying in this room,

and his name was
jack unterweger.

The serial killer.

In 1974, jack unterweger was
convicted of murder in austria.

After serving 15 years
in prison,

he went on a killing spree

that would eventually take
him to the cecil hotel.

Unterweger stayed
here for a couple of months,

supposedly, you know,

probably seriously
studying richard ramirez,

but what really
was crazy about it

it that while he was here
under the illusion

that he was going to be
documenting true crime,

he actually committed
true crime.

He killed at least three women
while he was staying here.

He beat them, strangled them

with their own underwear,
and left them there.

And these were unsolved crimes
for a while.

Is he still... is he dead?

Yes.
He committed suicide in prison.

Are you serious?
He hanged himself.

The energy here
is extremely heavy.

was sharing a room

at the cecil hotel
with her boyfriend,

shoe salesman ben levine.

Purcell, apparently unaware she
was pregnant, went into labor.

She later testified
she did not want

to disrupt the sleeping levine,
so she gave birth

in the bathroom.

Believing the child was dead,

she threw it out the window.

She was arrested and charged

with the murder of the baby,
but was found...

She ended up being declared
temporarily insane.

And she wasn't charged
with the murder.

They... they didn't...

Temporarily insane? Yeah.

So that must have...

that her behavior

Why was she feeling that way
when she was in the hotel?

It's weird that somebody in this
room went temporarily insane,

threw her newborn baby
out the window, killed the baby,

and directly across
from that room later

would be one of america's
most evil,

vicious serial killers to ever
walk the face of this earth,

richard ramirez. This guy was
doing devil worshipping here.

Was richard ramirez drawn
to the same energy

that many believe drove people
insane in this hotel

to do very bad things
to others and themselves?

And many people speculate
that elisa lam was also

being influenced by the energy
or entities of this building.

In the middle of our
investigation,

I get a call from my friend
scott gruenwald, he's downstairs

and wants to share
a troubling experience

he had at the cecil.

Some places, they just
get in ya, you know,

they fester in you, you know?

The minute we came
through these doors,

about 20 feet in,
you can feel it's heavy.

We were in the elevator.

We were getting ready
to go down.

And I was with scott,
and we were hearing, like,

voices coming in and out.

Scott was acting weird for him.

How was he acting? Dark?

Dark, like, well,
just like really grumpy.

And, like, I was trying
to talk to him

and we were going
to go to dinner later

and I was like, "well, I'll come
and get you later."

and he was just like,
went in his room

and he didn't say anything.

I don't even remember
till she reminded me

that I acted weird,
my face looked different.

I just kind of turned around
and walked away from...

Leaving her in a dangerous
place, possibly, I don't know.

And just going in my room
and passing out.

I was petrified.
And so I got up in the middle

of the night to go get him up.

He did not answer.
I mean, nothing.

I didn't hear from him
until the next day.

And I was like,
I had to beat on the door

to get him to wake up.
And that's not like him, huh?

No.
Very few places,
very, very few places

have made me feel that way.

And this is definitely
one of them.

It's a serious feeling of dread
more than the feeling of dread.

It's terrifying.

As we venture deeper
into these cold

and lonely halls, I can't help

but think how the list
of deaths here seems endless.

In 1962, there was
a woman named pauline otton,

I believe was her name,
and she jumped

from her window
somewhere on this floor

and actually landed
on a man walking by.

I know, and killed him.
Killed him.

On June 4th, 1964,

a beloved los angeles
personality,

her name was... they
called her pigeon goldie.

And people loved her.
She was in pershing square,

just a couple of blocks
from here, and she would feed

the pigeons, thus the nickname.

So on this June 4th, in 1964,

the maid came in here
and found her.

She'd been raped and beaten and
stabbed to death in this room.

were probably covered

with the amount of violence

and the terrible vibrations

it could be a spirit

but receives no responses

until he goes into the bathroom.

This is the bathroom that's
attached to goldie's room.

The killer may have came
into this bathroom

to wash the blood
off of his hands

after he took goldie's life.

If this is goldie
that just spoke,

what is she trying to say?

As billy sets the polterpod
on the shelf

next to the dodgers hat
where he earlier

captured the light anomaly
shooting into it.

Watch now what happens as

Back on the 10th floor,
billy continues trying

to contact goldie,
who was murdered in this room,

when something truly
terrifying occurs.

At the same time that this
loud, unexplained bang happens,

billy receives the word "evil"
on his paranormal puck 2 device.

I don't know what the that was,

but that door jarred hard.

I'm literally shaking right now.

One of these doors
in the hallway just now,

I don't know which one.

I was hoping that my x cam
here captured that.

Aaron joins me on the 7th floor

to take polaroid photos
in jack's room,

and as he snaps a picture,

we both hear an unexplained
blood-curdling scream.

What was that?!

We cannot confirm 100%
that this scream is paranormal.

However, after checking billy
and jay's cameras

and all our other
x cameras' audio

covering all the other floors,

this scream cannot be heard,

After analyzing all of our
incredible evidence here

at the cecil hotel,

I feel as though serial killer
jack unterweger

made the strongest
direct contact

through poltergeist activity.
