[male narrator] Today the world is witnessing the phenomenal popularity
of karate among the young people of the world.
Every man, deep in his subconscious mind
desires to become a strong man.
Karate is a world apart, a world of men.
Day and night, in New York, Paris, London
and throughout the world, young men have undergone
strenuous training, in a bid to challenge
the karate champions.
This documentary film shows the world and the men of karate
and the expert fighters, who would participate
in the first "World Open Karate Tournament"
held in Japan.
- You know what karate is? - Yes, I do.
What do you think of it?
'Well, I don't know too much about it''
'I personally am not terribly interested in it''
- 'You know what karate is?' - 'Yes, I know.'
'What do you think of it?'
'I think it's a gas for those who know how to handle it.'
'Don't use it to get their aggressions out.'
'You know, on their neighbors.'
Most important and indispensable in karate
is the basic thing which consists of three elements.
The thrust, the catch and the kick.
Extensive training not only develops the effective use
of power, but results in the strengthening
of the waist and the wrists
which require a great deal of twisting.
A man skilled in karate can easily break
ten or more sheets of Kawara tiles.
Or five, two centimeter boards.

The popularity of karate is not limited to Japan.
It has spread throughout the world.
North and South America
Europe, Africa, Australia and all of South East Asia.
This is karate. The world-wide sport.
[karate grunting]
[grunting continues]
[speaking in Japanese]
In the Dojo or training schools throughout the world
many women can be found training in the sport.
Because karate has a long history and tradition
of over 1000 years, there are various schools and styles.
Reflecting perhaps on the increasing crime rate today
not only men, but women as well
train themselves in the art of karate.
[karate grunting]
[speaking in Japanese]
Karate is the art of defending oneself when attacked
with bare hands, without weapons.

Specially selected delegates arrive from all over the world
to participate in the first "World Open Karate Tournament"
held in Tokyo.
Politics, Races and Ideologies are laid aside
as delegates arrive from all countries.
Their only ambition is to win the championship.
[speaking foreign language]
Arriving at Tokyo International Airport, is the US delegation
followed by delegates from West Germany, Switzerland
The United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, Denmark
Holland, Sweden, South Africa
and the countries of South East Asia.
Represented among the 128 contestants
from 35 countries were various forms of martial art.
Karate experts of different schools.
Ex-boxers, Kung Fu fighters
and Muay Thai kick boxers from Thailand.
All contenders in the tournament
to choose the world's karate champion.
William Oliver, from the United States.
Although lightweight compared to the others
his unique bird-like spring is a highly advanced technique
capable of knocking down his opponents.
[karate grunting aggressively]
[rock music]
[music continues]
The American delegates from New York
are of an uncanny stature
reminding one of the eye of a hurricane
because of their deceptive calm appearance.
Even the self assured karate experts from Japan
cannot but notice their presence.
[rock music continues]
[indistinct chatter]
[male #1] 'What do you think about the tournament comin' up''
[Oliver] 'Well, hope we got a good chance and, uh...good support.'
But, you know, the trainin' and everythin'.
Hope it pays off, you know.
Do you think that we trained harder
than the people in the European countries?
Oh, yes, 'cause we got the top instructors, you know.
Sean, Nakamura, Shawn Giame.
What techniques do you think, will win in this tournament?
'Different than other tournaments here in America''
[Oliver] 'Well, I'd say we have to manage with a lot of'
a lot of kicking techniques.
You know, we just learn how to fight the new way
as far as elbows and knee is concerned.
'We have the advantage 'cause we know how to do that'
'and we know how to fight in the tournaments here.'
'It's a lotta kickin' techniques.'
'Straight punches and stuff like that, you know.'

- Hi, how are you? - Okay.
Oliver's girlfriend, Cheryl
never fails to watch him training.
The couple plan to marry soon, and Oliver hopes to bring back
the World Championship as a wedding gift.
[male interviewer] 'Do you think that his winning'
'will benefit the relationship between you and him?'
[Cheryl] 'Well, I guess so.'
'How do you feel about his hours of trainin''
'a lot of times he has to be away from you''
'Well, sometimes I worry about him.'
'You know, because he practice a whole lot.'
'And, I um..'
'You know, like...I'm scared if he is not eating well.'
'I get after him to eat proper meals.'
'You know, to keep his body in shape.'
'What are your plans with him in the future?'
'after he comes back from the tournament''
'Well, I guess I'll be going to school.'
'And...we're not planning to get married real soon.'
'And I hope, he'd be working, saving up his money'
'and all that. I see for that to happen.'
[karate yelling]
[karate yelling]
Twenty four-year-old Willy Williams
is one of Oliver's competitors.
A young man with a beast like physique.
His powerful attack could easily win him
a prominent place in boxing.

[grunting continues]
One of the four American participants
Frank Clark is another of Oliver's competitors.

[karate instructor] 'What are you waiting for?'
[karate grunting]
[karate instructor] 'Alright, go back.'
[karate grunting]
[karate grunting]
Good friends, Williams and Clark
share the strong comradeship found only in karate.
Both live in the suburbs of New York, have part time jobs
and devote themselves to karate.
For them, karate is life itself.
[karate grunting]

[karate grunting]
[breathing heavily]
The other delegate from the United States
is Charles Martin.
[Charles Martin] 'I personally feel that this is the only way'
'a tournament should be held.'
'It is a full contact tournament.'
'And that, people train and they try to do..'
'They train their bodies physically'
'and they train their minds mentally.'
'So as to be prepared for this''
'Now, one can take karate'
'and know theoretically how to do this'
'and how to do that, but unless they actually practice it'
'and put it in motion and use it.'
[karate grunting]
[karate grunting]
[karate grunting]
Both Martin and Williams stand six foot six.
When they strike each other
it will be with a vicious, violent power.
Martin does not rely merely on physical strength.
His intellectual approach to fighting has placed him
in a unique position in the field of karate.
He's taken part in the US Open Championshiptournaments
winning several times.
Williams, on the other hand
has a destructive straight punch
that has caused several injuries.
This will be a confrontation of intellect and brute power.
[karate grunting]
[speaking foreign language]
[child] 'Go, Willy.'
[karate instructor] 'Charles, hurry. Come on, both of you.'
[karate grunting]
[karate grunting]
[karate instructor] 'Yeah.'
[karate grunting]
While the deciding factor in the tournament
will be the extent of the foreign power
Oishi, of small stature is the hope
of the Japanese delegation.
[karate grunting]
His round kick, especially his left
has the speed of lighting.
[panting]
[upbeat music]
Endowed with a good physic for a Japanese
Toshi Kazusa Sato, always is on the offensive.
An aggressive fighter, he has won
the All Japan Championship several times.

bet his life's dream on the world tournament
hoping to take back the championship
as a wedding gift for his fiancรยฉ, Cheryl.
He had spent much of life in preparation for the event
at the encouragement of his teachers and friends.
His deep interest in the orient
linked with Zen Buddhism and the samurai spirit
has won him the admiration of all who know him.

The number of delegates from each country is limited
to four at this first World Open Karate tournament.
For the participants it is the culmination
of years of training and hard work.
Japan being the host country, enjoys the special privilege
of having eight delegates in the tournament.
[speaking Japanese]
There are various schools of karate in Japan.
However, most schools today are concerned only
with kata or style.
Tokshinkay, the sponsor of the tournament
however, is a school of Kenka Karate.
The fighting karate.
It is karate in its most practical form.
The principle of actual fighting karate
to counter attacks with only the use of bare hands.
The fighters bodies must be trained to a point
seemingly beyond the limits of human endurance.
Anyone on the receiving end of a blow
will easily have bones broken.
In order to counter this destructive power themselves
the men must undergo severe training.

For this tournament, the traditional Japanese drum
was used to signal the beginning of the matches.

Seiken Shiwari or straight punch board breaking
is compulsory for anyone
participating in the tournament.
Using a clenched fist
piles of two centimeter boards are broken.
Points being given to the number of boards used.
Compound fractures of the hand at this stage
can easily incapacitate a participant.
Prior to the matches, the American delegates
William Oliver and Charles Martin
give a demonstration
explaining the rules of the tournament.
In tournament matches, the Tokshinkay school
has far less rules regarding fouls than other schools.
While hand blows to the face or head
and countering with the hand and blows of any kind
to sore spots are forbidden.
All other tactics are permissible.
The attacker must not hold on to his opponent
for longer than two seconds.

Originally developed in China
between the 10th and the 14th century
during the Tang and Ming dynasties
Kung fu is a traditional art of fighting
passed down through the ages to the present time.
It's style is quite different from Japanese karate.
Kung fu is a sport whose movements are rather a form
of physical beauty than a practical form of fighting.

As the tournament progresses
the number of injuries increase.
Normally in karate matches, the participants
do not hit their opponents
but stop the attack just short of actually hitting him.
However, for this world tournament
the opponents actually attack each other until one is beaten
or submits.
This is Kyokushin karate
which is the practical form of karate, a fighting karate.
The difference between this form of combat
and other forms such as wrestling and boxing
is that there is no matching of ranks or body weights.
[men speaking Japanese]
Nothing wrong.
Hu. Hu.
Here in Singapore, the days are hot and the nights cool.
Fighters are trained both day and night
under different conditions

There are numerous dojo or schools in New York
where instructors from Japan meet out severe training.
Underscoring the world wide popularity of karate
the number of students is constantly increasing.
Some come from as far away as South America andNewZealand
to receive training.
It is natural, therefore
that tests for advancing in ranks are very competitive.
Students find it almost impossible
to advance in ranking from brown belt to black.
To be awarded the coveted black belt
one must defeat 10 others of a higher rank.
Only through this severe training can oneattain
the right to participate in the world tournament.
Charles Martin, William Oliver, Willy Williams and Frank Clark.
These US delegates were chosen
only after this hard competition.

Because I'm not gonna say it's gonna change a personality
but if basically you're that way anyway, it's simply gonna
make you mature in those areas which I think he's matured in.
He.. I guess he was always a calm person, a patient person.
He always thought before he did things.
I think karate has impressed upon him
even more the importance of thinking
before you do things, the importance of self control.
The importance of being aware of what you're doing
how you're doing it
