This documentary film shows

"World Open Karate Tournament"

held in Japan.

Most important
and indispensable in karate

is the basic thing which
consists of three elements.

The thrust, the catch
and the kick.

Extensive training not only
develops the effective use

of power, but results
in the strengthening

of the waist and the wrists

which require
a great deal of twisting.

A man skilled in karate
can easily break

ten or more sheets
of Kawara tiles.

Or five, two centimeter boards.

The popularity of karate
is not limited to Japan.

It has spread
throughout the world.

North and South America

Europe, Africa, Australia
and all of South East Asia.

This is karate.
The world-wide sport.

In the Dojo or training
schools throughout the world

many women can be found
training in the sport.

Because karate has a long
history and tradition

of over 1000 years,there are
various schools and styles.

Reflecting perhaps on
the increasing crime rate today

not only men,
but women as well

in the art of karate.

oneself when attacked

to win the championship.

Airport, is the US delegation

followed by delegates from
West Germany, Switzerland

The United Kingdom,
Poland, Belgium, Denmark

Holland, Sweden,
South Africa

and the countries
of South East Asia.

Represented among
the 128 contestants

from 35 countries were various
forms of martial art.

Karate experts
of different schools.

Ex-boxers,
Kung Fu fighters

and Muay Thai kick boxers
from Thailand.

All contenders
in the tournament

to choose the world's
karate champion.

William Oliver,
from the United States.

Although lightweight
compared to the others

his unique bird-like spring
is a highly advanced technique

capable of knocking down
his opponents.

The American delegates
from New York

are of an uncanny stature

reminding one of
the eye of a hurricane

because of their
deceptive calm appearance.

Even the self assured
karate experts from Japan

cannot but notice
their presence.

Willy Williams

is one of Oliver's competitors.

A young man with
a beast like physique.

His powerful attack
could easily win him

a prominent place in boxing.

of Oliver's competitors.

His intellectual approach
to fighting has placed him

He's taken part in the US Open
Championshiptournaments

winning several times.

Williams, on the other hand

has a destructive
straight punch

that has caused
several injuries.

This will be a confrontation
of intellect and brute power.

and the samurai spirit

has won him the admiration
of all who know him.

to four at this first
World Open Karate tournament.

For the participants
it is the culmination

of years of training
and hard work.

Japan being the host country,
enjoys the special privilege

of having eight delegates
in the tournament.

There are various schools
of karate in Japan.

However, most schools today
are concerned only

with kata or style.

Tokshinkay, the sponsor
of the tournament

however, is a school
of Kenka Karate.

The fighting karate.

It is karate in its
most practical form.

The principle
of actual fighting karate

to counter attacks with only
the use of bare hands.

The fighters bodies
must be trained to a point

seemingly beyond the limits
of human endurance.

Anyone on the receiving end
of a blow

will easily have
bones broken.

In order to counter this
destructive power themselves

the men must undergo
severe training.

For this tournament,
the traditional Japanese drum

was used to signal
the beginning of the matches.

Seiken Shiwari or straight
punch board breaking

is compulsory for anyone

participating
in the tournament.

Using a clenched fist

piles of two centimeter
boards are broken.

Points being given
to the number of boards used.

Compound fractures
of the hand at this stage

can easily incapacitate
a participant.

Prior to the matches,
the American delegates

In tournament matches,

has far less rules regarding
fouls than other schools.

and Ming dynasties

Kung fu is a traditional
art of fighting

passed down through the ages
to the present time.

It's style is quite different
from Japanese karate.

Kung fu is a sport whose
movements are rather a form

of physical beauty than
a practical form of fighting.

Kishi suffers a fracture
of the right thumb bone.

Yet his strength is such that
he wards off thefighter.

It's origin,
like karate, is China.

Arriving in Okinawa,
it developed into karate.

In Thailand, it became the

The lightweight Thai boxer
who won this match

hearing the outcome of taking

This is Kyokushin karate

which is the practical form
of karate, a fighting karate.

The difference between
this form of combat

and other forms such as
wrestling and boxing

is that there is no matching
of ranks or body weights.

both day and night

under different conditions

taking into account
the temperature.

The fighters have a reputation
for their tenaciousness.
