seven years since I was

A few months ago,

I thought I would
never sing again.

She is postponing the
remainder of her European shows

due to vocal cord damage.

"These past few days
have been some

of the hardest of my career."

If she doesn't recover from
this, her career is in danger.

Shakira will need the best surgeon
in the world to help recover her voice.

Voice and emotion are connected
in the human being in such a way

that you can't understand
until you can't use it.

It was very difficult for me
to recover without an operation,

and an operation was very risky.

Surgery meant being away from my
children for some time

because after the surgery, you
can't even sneeze.

Sasha, I remember in
December when I said,

"What are you going to ask
Santa Claus for?"

And he said, "I am
going to ask God

and the Virgin Mary for mom
to get her voice back."

Do you know what it's
like to have two children

of two and a half
and four and a half

and not be able to see them?

To have to speak to them
through signs and gestures.

for a few weeks.

therapy and rehabilitation.

I met with five doctors

Four of them told me that

recover my voice
without surgery.

I thought I would lose
my voice forever.

then November and December passed...

and I was having problems
with my voice

until just before rehearsals
started again.

Look, I never
fought with Gerard as

much as when I couldn't speak.

He would say, "Please,
I need you to speak."

Because I was so angry.

I said, "Never again,
I'll never be able to sing again."

I went to Lourdes and
brought back holy water.

I tried everything.

I meditated.

I chanted, "Ommm."

I did everything.

Suddenly, magically,
it all started to flow.

I was back.

It was like being born again.

Being able to sing,
being on stage.

There were moments where

I thought that wasn't
going to happen.

The doctors couldn't believe it.

I think I am a
better singer now.

I value having a voice and
I appreciate it a lot more,

because I give thanks
for this gift.

Every time I am on stage

and I see people
singing with me,

with the lights from
their phones on...

and we are one in that moment.

I look at the horizon
of the stadium

and I give thanks to God
for healing my voice.
