Couple of months ago, I was in school

preparing for the semester.

Now I'm being coached by R&B legends.

Growing up, my mother did not approve of secular music.

We couldn't listen to it, definitely couldn't sing it.

This is my first time singing a non‐gospel song

on the big stage, by Usher.

Like, man, this song is not what I'm used to.

Like, it's crazy.

Do you guys do a lot of your own vocal arranging,

your performances and whatnot?

I have my own band, so we do a lot of cover songs.

I'm the lead singer of a cover band

called New Band on the Block.

We play a lot of bars, restaurants,

but I've been a probation officer for five years.

My job is to supervise on the conduct

of convicted offenders, make contacts with offenders,

and motivate them and push them to see their own potential

and how to overcome obstacles like I overcame.

So this song, it's just another challenge for me,

and I really feel like it's really going to be a battle.

Deion, just maybe softer in the beginning... Okay.

Yeah, and then you always have somewhere to go.

You know, you have to make the song your own,

and that's what you both did.

And so just keep working on that.

But you got to give not just your voice, but stage presence.

and give the physical performance

that you needed to give.

And, my God, you went beyond exceeding my expectations.

A lot of my college experience was me being an introvert.

that control and those runs and that style, that approach,

I'm kind of more, like, shy, so it's harder for me.

But Kelly knows what she's doing, so I'm gonna trust her.

I'm looking forward to see what Anna Grace does.

to make sure that you don't trip along the way.

Andrew, for ‐‐ for you,

your "wh" consonants push a lot of breath out,

which then makes your pitch fall a little flat. Gotcha.

Like, you're pushing all this out,

And, like, that's hard, because you have no more breath.

When Harry broke out, when Niall broke out

of One Direction,

they've done a really good job

of touching on some older influences

in their ‐‐ their modern take on things now.

And this song in particular,

you get, you know, so many great '70s, '80s feels from this,

so I just thought it'd be a good

kind of mash of all your influences.

When I was 15, I got asked to join Kick‐It,

which is this boy band that I kind of knew about.

I was definitely out of my comfort zone.

I was a quiet, kind of shy kid.

It gave me confidence. I needed that.

It made me realize I wanted to be an artist.

But then when I was 16, I got diagnosed with leukemia.

I froze in that moment.

I just remember, like, tears rushing down my face.

There was so many months where I just couldn't sing.

Every night when I was in the hospital,

I'd just put some headphones on and I'd just listen to music

and I'd breathe and I'd just feel the lyrics,

and, like, that saved me.

I feel so blessed to be here.

The energy's amazing.

Your chemistry as performers is phenomenal,

and I want to make sure that people who are at home

who will be really familiar with this song,

given the fact that it was a massive hit,

aren't just listening to a bunch of ad‐libs, frankly.

Just, I think we need to find a way

to give some structure to it.

I started singing in my grandparents' bar

when I was about seven years old.

It was definitely kind of the spark that started it all.

But L. A. and a big TV show,

it's definitely a way different environment.

I wanted to showcase the youth on my team.

Part of my intention with this pairing was to say,

for Bradley and Rachel.

Having known you and a few of the other people on "Glee,"

you guys were recording thousands of songs. Oh, yeah.

So you've got thousands of hours

of experience behind the microphone. Yeah.

What was that like, and how do you think

that'll apply to them in this setting,

singing a song that is just a classic?

Well, we sang a lot of classics on that show,

and I always say that doing "Glee"

was like a doctorate degree in performing and recording.

You guys are doing a song that all generations know.

When I first heard that we were doing an Elton John song,

I wouldn't lie, I was a little bit nervous,

because that's a pretty big task to tackle.

Elton John is definitely a very theatrical singer,

and I used to do musical theater

so I think that my voice is going to fit well.

to sort of more the pure tone, it felt really good.

One of the things I love about Rachel's voice

is her ability to control her vibrato.

I heard this song when I was in my freshman year,

and I was being bullied probably pretty badly.

This song helped me through so much.

I'm not really like kids nowadays.

I'm more quirky, as you can see.

And I have interesting fashion taste,

but when you dress like this to school,

you get teased a little bit.

I remember I was eating my lunch in the principal's office,

because I didn't have anywhere to sit,

and my music was just on shuffle and I heard "Your Song"

and I had a connection with it.

Rio and Carolina, they are the youngest on my team.

I've been wanting to do this song on "The Voice" for awhile,

and I felt like you two would do a great version of it.

Carolina, she's got those super‐high notes.

What a tour de force that performance was.

You breathed new life into the song.

I felt really, really proud in that moment,

because I am first‐generation American.

I grew up raised by my mom, who's from Bolivia,

but he passed away when I was 3, to cancer.

My mom always told me that he loved music, and being here now,

that's definitely inspired me, because I know that

he's very, very proud of what I'm doing.

I think Rio's is kind of a little huskier

and like alto, kind of full voice. Mm‐hmm.

My mom being here with me has been so encouraging.

She is my number‐one inspiration.

She's been in countless bands for as long as I can remember.

My grandma struggles with dementia,

and it's not easy to deal with.

My mom made the decision

to put my grandma in a nursing home,

and that was honestly one of the hardest decisions

that I think she's had to make.

But she's going through it like a fighter.

She's strong, just like my mom.

I think this song, it's about

remembering somebody that you used to know,

and I think that's a constant struggle for my grandma,

is to try and remember who people are.

My grandma doesn't even know that I'm here,

and I know that she's gonna be so excited for me.

Even though she doesn't remember everything,

she remembers me and my voice,

um...and I just really appreciate that.

I want to make her proud.

I'm not only doing this for me, but for her and my whole family.

Rio's voice is one of the most unique voices

I've ever heard in my life.

It's got this depth and complexity to it.

It's so special.

I almost can't understand the lyrics, at times.

I thought Carolina did that less,

and so I was able to actually hear the song and the lyrics.

I think Rio has a bigger voice and a bigger range,

And, Carolina, you have this almost Christina Aguilera vibe
