For what we're going to put it through.

Narrator: In summer, temperatures in box creek soared

To almost 100 degrees, 'causing water sources to evaporate.

We're out of water. Pretty much high and dry.

You know, our pond just ran dry.

Box creek runs under the ground through here,

And when the snow starts melting up the mountain,

We get more water, but right now there's no snow

On the mountains.

So, we ran low on water, and the problem with low water

Is these little ruffles fill up with black sand.

And what happens is there's no place

For that piece of gold to fall.

In fact, you can see a little piece of gold right there

That's going to skip over here.

It still didn't have a place to fall, and it's going to surf

All the way down into our pond. We lose gold.

Sluice box is just not working.

We're going to come up with something different.

We can pull some recycle water out.

Either way, this is what I suggest to do.

Right as she gets low on oil, fire that one up.

I'd rather merge them.

Narrator: Dave plans to increase their water supply

By taking recycled water from their tailings pond

And pumping it 50 yards to a t-junction,

Where it will be mixed with fresh water

From their intake pond.

In theory, it should boost the amount of water

Going through the wash plant.

So, why don't I go get another pump?

Let's send k.C. For some hoses,

See if we can tee that in.

So, we go 70% fresh water, 30% recycled water,

And see if that works? We got no choice.

We're just going to put it straight through

And dump it into the wash box. It'll be a temporary fix,

But it'll get us back up and then we'll fix it later.

It ain't made for pressure, but what we're doing up there

Is not too much pressure.

Which mined box creek almost a century ago.

But signs suggest the massive dredge

Didn't make it up the valley to the willow creek mine.

It's unbelievable.

Look at how this thing was broke.

I mean, that's three quarter inch steel,

In american history. Weighing in at 50,000 pounds,

It used these solid steel spuds to anchor and pivot itself

As it dragged its way up creeks and rivers on the hunt for gold.

Dave: These old rivets are the same way

They built battleships in world war two,

The golden gate bridge, the empire state building.

Same technology.

If it broke like that, they were in some tough digging.

That may have been why the dairy dredge quit here.

Jason: So, the reason I'm taking my bucket off

Is when you have a chain coming off the back side

Of your bucket, as you swing and go up,
