to go back to the locker room.

This is about COVID.

REPORTER: Every major sports
league is calling a timeout.

NBA PLAYER: It was the day
that sports stood still.

We were trying to figure out
what a bubble could look like.

PAUL: George Floyd changed
the conversation immediately.

It wasn't a question of how
are we gonna play,

it was a question of
do we wanna play?

♪ (MID-TEMPO MUSIC PLAYS) ♪

[bright tone]

- Scientists in China
are trying to determine

if a new virus strain
is responsible

for a pneumonia outbreak
in the city of Wuhan.

- Deadly new virus
killed 6 people

and infected almost 300 more.

- But human-to-human
transmission means

this virus is potentially
a far bigger threat.

[ominous music]

[indistinct chatter]

[PA system chimes]

- Very good morning,
ladies and gentlemen.

This is the captain speaking
from the bridge.

It's a pleasant morning
here in Yokohama.

- Ooh, look at this.
- Wow.

"Diamond Princess"
will set sail today,

heading out to open waters.

[dynamic music]

- We're just hanging out.

There's my lovely wife, Jerri.

- Mark spent two years
in Taiwan

on a mission for our church.

He was so excited to show me
all the sights,

and then this Asian cruise
just came up on our radar,

so we signed up.

- We're not as famous
as the Kardashians,

but we're twice as sexy, so...
- [laughs]

The business that we run

is an inpatient
addiction treatment center.

- I mean, seriously,
look at that.

- We focus on pornography
and sex addiction.

- Am I right?
- Stop.

- [laughing] Huh?
- Stop.

- Can I get an amen
on that one?

- We've saved a lot
of marriages,

and, you know,
one of our big philosophies is

live in the present
and not be a victim.

- We are on
the "Diamond Princess"

in the penthouse suite C409.

- This was our 11th cruise.

We went on our first cruise

a few years
after we got together.

Just really liked it.

And then later,

we actually got engaged
on a cruise ship.

- Mm-hmm.

Got a sofa area here.

- With me in the wheelchair...
- He had broke his leg.

- We were debating about even
going on the cruise.

- Here's the bedroom.

- But Japan is somewhere
I always wanted to go.

- Complimentary fresh fruits.
Walk-in closet.

Nice deep, jetted tub.

- If you've ever taken
a cruise,

everything's very glamorous
and wonderful.

But what goes behind
the scenes in a ship is--

it's like a machine.

- It's like its own world.

- Oh.

- [speaking Indonesian]

[indistinct chatter]
- Too bad.

- It's a wonderful lifestyle,

and I've seen
some amazing things,

being from a very small town
in east Tennessee.

But if you work below deck,

most of your life on board
is below water.

[waves crashing]

- The CDC is now confirming
the first case

of a potentially deadly
coronavirus in the U.S.

- U.S. health officials say

the threat to the American
public remains low,

but they are tracing
the patients' travel history.

[upbeat dance music playing]

♪ ♪

[percussive music playing]

♪ ♪

- Here we are on top
of the "Diamond Princess"

in the middle of Hong Kong.

All around us

are buildings in the city.

First I thought
we would not like to cruise

because we like
to get off the beaten path.

But they have good food,
they have good entertainment.

You know, things are organized.

The morning we get
to Hong Kong,

it was Chinese New Year.

Paul's daughter had texted us.

And she's like,
"Well, don't get off the ship.

"There's some kind of a virus
going around

and people are dying."

And we're like, "What?"

You know, we really haven't
heard anything about this.

Paul and I walked down
to the desk.

They said, "Well,

"Princess Cruises
has said that it's safe.

No problem."

So we said,
"Well, we're gonna go."

And at the time,
we're kind of thinking,

"Well, we're having
that Asian experience,

wearing a mask."
[laughs]

I mean, you never do that
in the United States.

- We get the news on board

and it was just all
kind of hearsay.

Like, "Oh, there's a virus.
There's always a virus.

"There's always something
around the world going on.

Still not a big deal."

You're kind of like,

"Okay, cool.
I'll wash my hands."

[mellow electronic music]

♪ ♪

[Jerri laughs]

- It's your lucky year.
You know that now.

- Oh, we need it.

♪ ♪

[dreamy music]

♪ ♪

- Go.
[bell chimes]

♪ ♪

- Oh, my gosh.
We had so much fun.

After Hong Kong,
we went to Vietnam

and then to Taiwan
and then back to Japan.

- At our last stop in Okinawa,

they were taking
everyone's temperature

and interviewing everybody

and just not letting them
just walk off the ship

like we've been used to.

- It was inconveniencing
my trip

so I was just going,
"Oh, man, come on."

- Yeah, we've only got
so many hours here.

- Seriously, people?

Come on,
we only got so many hours.

I got things to see.

[foreboding music]

♪ ♪

[indistinct chatter]

[PA system chimes]

[all cheering]

[lively music playing]

- [singing]

[all cheering]

[dissonant music]

♪ ♪

- We anchored in the harbor,

and the Japanese officials
got on board.

- Ah. Ah.
[laughter]

- [chuckles]

- I'm okay.
[chuckles]

- They were still having
activities for us.

It was kind of like,
"Oh, hey,

"a free day
on the cruise ship.

You know, this is great."

- Then the captain came on

and told us to go back
into our rooms.

♪ ♪

[helicopter rotors whirring]

[PA system chimes]

- It's not us.

- Oh, my God.

I'm scared because it's quiet.

Let's go back.
[chuckles uncomfortably]

- [coughing]

♪ ♪

[chuckles]

- We couldn't just stay
in our rooms.

Even though the passengers
were quarantined

and weren't allowed to leave,

the crew had to keep
the ship going.

Answering phones,
delivering medication,

cleaning for 12 hours a day.

And we delivered 3,000 meals,
three meals a day,

to all the guests.

- [speaking Indonesian]

- Yeah, yeah.

- We were put into harm's way,
but in the moment,

that's all we knew how to do.

That's--we were just doing
what we were told.

- Hi! Namaste.
- Hi.

Yeah.
[chuckles]

[knock at door]

- I just got a knock
on the door for food.

[air hissing]

♪ ♪

- So this dessert came tonight
for dinner.

Pretty sure

it's been hanging out
in the cooler for about a week.

And we got stew.
Kent is not thrilled.

- Room service has been
a little tricky.

We got a hamburger bun
with lettuce, tomato, onion,

but no burger.

- No ketchup,
no burger, no cheese.

- All we could joke about
was say, "Where's the beef?"

[both laugh]

- I could actually sense
that anxiety with the crew

'cause they--

to me, they weren't
as friendly as they were

during the rest of the time.

There was more
of a businesslike

and just very nervous
and, "What's gonna happen?"

and, "How long am I here?"
and--and--

- And they had to hurry too.

- And they had--
yeah, that's true.

- I mean, you know,
they had to hurry,

and they weren't, you know--

they weren't getting tips
anymore.

- But that was my experience.

- Okay, you can have
your experience.

- She asked for my experience.

That was my experience
with them.

- The CDC has reported
five cases

of the novel coronavirus
in the United States.

Americans should not worry
for their own safety.

The president
is highly engaged...

[uneasy music]

- Okay, they've got a bunch
of people in white coats

lined up down there.
- They're not white coats.

They're white hazmat suits.
- They're white hazmat suits.

They've got these little
tunnels down here.

"E.T." tunnels, I call 'em.

[siren wailing]

[indistinct chatter]

- Just got word that
there could be 41 more cases.

The concern that I've had

were they have tested
incredibly few amount of people

on the ship.

And that would bring the
total number of cases to 61

of the 273
that have been tested.

So that would mean
that a quarter,

a third of the ship
is infected, possibly.

♪ ♪

[indistinct PA announcement]

[tense music]

[indistinct chatter]

- Having the background

and experiencing South African
emergency centers,

I've handled
crisis situations.

But still, it was overwhelming.

It was impossible to attend
to every single person.

We were basically
just surviving

'cause it was really nonstop
from morning to night.

♪ ♪

The Japanese authorities
used the crew

for the well-being
and for the safety

of the passengers,

but the crew areas
were such a confined space

that it's impossible for them

not to have exposure
to each other.

♪ ♪

- [coughing]

- Just few minutes ago...

- There are 38 additional
positive cases so far.

Persons will be notified
and...

[indistinct PA announcement]

- I'm Dr. Grant Tarling,

chief medical officer
on Princess Cruises.

This is a new coronavirus
to humans

that was only identified
about six weeks ago.

So being so new,
global health agencies

are urgently
developing tactics

to understand the illness
and to control its spread.

But here's what we know.

The U.S. Centers
for Disease Control believe

that the virus spreads mostly

from direct person-to-person
contact will ill people,

such as when they are coughing
and sneezing,

just like colds and flu
are spread.

There is no current evidence
the illness spreads

through
the air ventilation systems.

- So I was just sitting,
watching some TV,

and I heard--

sounded like somebody pulling
some tape,

and I came over here...

So they've taped the vent
from the hallway to my cabin.

So I don't know
what's going on.

Any knock at the door
is just gonna be wondering,

"Am I positive?"

And if we're still reporting
this many cases,

how are we ever
gonna get off the ship?

Eventually,
we're all gonna be sick.

[soft ominous music]

- We didn't really know

how the virus
was gonna affect anybody,

let alone somebody that had
a suppressed immune system,

and Rebecca has MS,

so it was a big, big concern.

- Outside of mainland China,

the largest
coronavirus outbreak

is on a cruise ship,
the "Diamond Princess,"

that has been quarantined

in the Japanese port
of Yokohama.

- There is this rumor
that they are planning

to sink the ship in the water
with the people.

And we were scared
when we heard that.

[door latch clicks]
Oh, God.

Are they going to drown us now

because they have found
viruses?

Is this the solution that
they're going to get out of it?

- The "Diamond Princess"
is a huge,

floating health hazard.

There are still many questions

about how
the Japanese government

has handled the outbreak.

Why have they still not tested
everyone on board?

- Their testing procedures
changed every few days.

We wanted to know
who is being tested.

If these people
have close contacts,

what are gonna happen
to the close contacts?

And we just never got
straight answers.

- [speaking indistinctly]

- I informed all the crew
members who tested positive.

And then they would say,
"Yes, Doc, I'm fine.

There's nothing wrong,"

and probably
at least a third of them

had absolutely no symptoms.

And that's how we found out

that there were many people
who were asymptomatic.

Today
that's general knowledge,

but that's something
we didn't know at the time.

They didn't know
that they were spreading it.

- Dr. Fauci,

coronavirus has been
in the news so much.

People are worried.

- I don't think people
should be frightened.

I mean, there's no reason
for anyone

in the United States
to wear a mask.

The concern about coronavirus
certainly is taking away

from people worrying
about influenza.

[gurgling]

- Oh, just warming up--
ooh, wow, it's hot. [laughs]

[chuckling]
Just warming up my breakfast.

I hate cold eggs.

- And here, I will eat anything
to survive,

watching through the window
as the world goes by.

Same window,
same cars and trucks

running over the bridge.

- Did I talk about my--
about my testing yesterday?

I can't even remember
what time that was.

You know, it's all running
together. It really is.

- We have no idea
what we've talked about.

- I don't know what day it is.
I don't know what--

[thermometer beeping]
This is all running together.

- So that one was 37.3.

- Another day has started.

We should be bringing
more challenges on our way.

- I'm taking my temperature,
as the captain ordered.

- Picnic table challenge.
- Picnic table challenge.

- Time will be moving slowly
for many of you,

and it may be difficult
to keep your spirits high.

- "Groundhog Day."
[chuckles]

- We are, as always, ready--
- I don't know.

Somebody had a sense of humor
when they put it on there,

I guess.

- Remaining strong and united.

- God, I love a man
who scrubs the toilet.

[chuckles]

- Finally,

an interview with CNBC,

and part of what he said
was that this situation

was "totally under control."

The ship is unsafe
at this point.

Princess did all they could,

but there is something
driving that virus

to spread like wildfire.

and we still stayed together.

It took four days
for the quarantine officers

to come and test me
for the virus

and it became really difficult
for me because we were

not even allowed to step out
of the cabin.

On the crew decks,
there are no windows,

no ways
that you can look outside.

You don't know what time
of the day it is

until you look at the clock.

So I just lost it.

I made a decision
to speak to the media...

cruise ship.

Even though
it's against my contract.

But my life is more important
than the job.

I just want to inform you
that we need help.

Each and every crew member

needs to also be tested
and be separated.

We are happy to do whatever
we have to do to help others,

but we don't feel safe.

another coronavirus infection

here in the U.S.

America's 15th case comes

as infections skyrocket
across mainland China.

is that Jerri has been
tested positive for coronavirus

and has been taken off the ship
to a hospital.

I guess I should qualify that
and say we don't know

that that's what she's been--
that she's tested for--for--

I don't know, what's the word
now they want us to use?

COVID-19?

That's a hard adjustment
to make.

- Here I am
in a Japanese hospital.

I feel like I'm in a kimono.

that they are taking all
of the American passengers

off the ship
by a military plane.

for the coronavirus.

We're going in May.

on our last morning

- Our dinner over here

- Well, we're exhausted,
but we're on the plane,

and that's a good feeling.

Pretty miserable
wearing these masks, though.

Having been isolated
and in quarantine,

and then all of a sudden,

you're shoved in
with all these people.

It was long.
We were exhausted.

We didn't know
where we were going, even.

And in the middle
of the plane

was a high,
plastic enclosure.

And I looked, I said,

"God, there's--
there's people in there."

[tense music]

- Come to find out

we were on the airplane
with people that had COVID.

So when we walked in,
we walked past 'em.

When we had to go
to the bathroom,

we had to go past them.

- And when they were
taking the temperatures,

I heard them say
to the man behind me

that his temperature was high.

And then they said that

he had to go back
into the quarantine.

Well, we've had
a wardrobe change here.

I don't know if you can hear me
'cause it's so loud in here,

but we all got new masks, so...
[chuckles]

It's not helping much 'cause
I still feel terribly filthy

and like I'm crawling
with germs.

Ugh.

[indistinct chatter]

- We are progressing

with today's
disembarkation activities.

Over 1,100 people
have disembarked

over the last two days.

[coughs]
