change with the arrival of each season.

- Summer is a wonderful time here.

There's warm sun. There's fun on the beach.

It feels like anything is possible.

In this case, with friendships and love affairs

formed over the summer months, maybe it was inevitable

that it would all go bad by Halloween.

Lifelong bonds, new friendships,

and summertime affairs set off a deadly chain of events

for five young lives.

The first link

Julie Dennings.

- Julie was from a blue-collar family.

She was an achiever, straight-A student,

captain of the track team.

- Congratulations, sweeties. - Thank you!

- Julie was a terrific kid.

Really had a great future ahead of her.

I mean, she had so much potential...

until the night of her graduation.

And, uh, Julie was driving on the road outside of town

when her car lost control.

- Julie did suffer very severe injuries.

She broke her pelvis, fractured several vertebrae.

It required months of rehabilitation.

- Julie developed an addiction to painkillers

during her recovery.

It was something that she never really got over.

So we know now that when she was under emotional stress,

she would turn back to pills.

And I believe that's one of the reasons

she became so isolated for so long.

Julie's terrible accident leaves scars

both physical and emotional.

- What I think damaged Julie the most was the guilt,

because she wasn't the only one in the car that night.

- Well, back then, I was on highway patrol.

I got called to the scene and saw all three of them,

two females and a male.

The young man, he had been killed instantly.

Julie is cleared of any wrongdoing,

based on the account given by the only teenager

to walk away

Julie's best friend, Emily Montgomery.

- Emily was from good stock.

Her family had a lot of influence and power

in local politics.

She could have been part

of a fairly exclusive social circle,

but she spent most of her time with her local town friends.

- Her rich friends made her feel inadequate,

and around Julie, she was the star.

- So we'll be a team.

- Julie went through a difficult period of recovery,

confined to her bed for the entire summer,

but Emily was there for her the entire time.

She was an amazing friend,

between people that go through any type of tragedy together.

and it seems like nothing can come between

these two best friends.

- By the summer of 2013, eight years after the accident,

all the indications were that

Julie and Emily were closer than ever,

even though there were now three of them.

Emily had recently gotten engaged.

- Julie and Andrew worked together

at a local tourism company.

They were reportedly close friends at work,

and then after a few months,

they began to hang out socially.

So one night, Julie invited Andrew out for drinks

with her and Emily, and, well, the rest is history.

Andrew Holland's sweet disposition

only hides the truth

a man wrestling with a tortured soul.

- Andrew came from a prominent family in Boston.

He'd been given every opportunity in life

but could never manage to live up to the family name

or their expectations.

- As a child, Andrew dealt with severe anger issues

and was prone to violent outbursts.

His parents were at a loss.

They decided Andrew needed structure and discipline,

and he was enrolled in a military prep school

when he was 12 years old.

I'd say he had a lot of repressed anger from his family.

Andrew turned to alcohol

to numb the rage that he was holding inside.

- After he came back from the academy,

Andrew's welcome didn't last too long.

At a family event, Andrew got into a fight

with one of his brothers.

And it was a huge ordeal. The police were called.

And the family had finally had enough.

- Andrew was basically exiled to Camden Harbor by his family

until he could get his life together.

- You would totally do anything for me, right, babe?

Right? Right. - Right.

Emily is Andrew's ticket to the life

he can't make for himself.

- For Andrew, marrying into Emily's well-known family

was a way back into his parents' good graces

and ultimately would give him access to a large trust fund

his family had taken away from him.

But Emily had one condition

when she agreed to marry Andrew.

- Emily forced Andrew to keep the drinking under control.

It would make her very angry when Andrew drank.

Andrew agreed,

and the happy couple began to plan their new life.

- By the summer, Andrew and Emily

were in full wedding planning mode

and had many family obligations.

Julie often found herself alone.

And on one fateful day, she went to the beach by herself

and struck up a conversation with another woman

that was also on her own.

And that was how she met Brielle Abato.

Brielle Abato arrives in Camden Harbor

looking to start a new life

in a town where nobody knows her past.

- I became involved because of the unusual,

brutal nature of this case.

I was engaged by the District Attorney's Office

to profile everyone involved.

Brielle had an interesting profile.

She was actually the product of being

an only child whose parents went through

a very bitter divorce when she was very young.

Commitment and stability were not something she sought out.

If anything, those concepts repulsed her.

- Brielle liked to have affairs, married or not.

She enjoyed the attention

and didn't care about the consequences.

- Ron?

- Well, Brielle eventually slept with the wrong woman's husband.

Not long after the affair was discovered,

the woman was found dead.

Brielle and the husband were initially suspected,

and though Brielle was eventually cleared

of all charges, suspicion followed her.

- It ruined Brielle's reputation,

and Brielle really had no choice but to leave town.

It's kind of ironic.

Brielle was incredibly popular with guys,

but she'd never had a close friend.

And she craved that.

- It was only natural for Julie to want

to cultivate new relationships.

The arrival of a new face

would've seemed like a perfect chance.

- Phone records indicate that Julie and Brielle communicated

on a consistent basis shortly after meeting on the beach.

They were also often seen around town together.

Inseparable for weeks,

Julie and Brielle have become close friends,

and Emily finally takes a break from wedding planning

to meet Brielle.

I'm so excited for you to meet Brielle.

- Hi. Nice to meet you.

- We were just talking about our day at the beach yesterday.

- Before that meeting, Emily had gone online

to get background as to who this new person was

in Julie's life, and it wasn't hard to find.

She discovered the whole story from Brielle's past.

So Emily was immediately suspicious

of this newcomer in her life.

- In the aftermath of the accident years before,

Emily was the only person to stay

by Julie's side while she recovered.

Emily felt like she was the one who had been protecting Julie,

and this sudden friendship with a stranger

was setting off alarms.

- Right?

- Yeah.

But as the tragic tale unfolds,

Emily won't realize she's powerless to protect anyone,

including herself, until it's too late.

Lifelong friends Julie and Emily

have been inseparable since a tragic accident

left their classmate dead

and Julie badly injured.

But with Emily's recent engagement

and the introduction of a new friend,

their friendship starts to unravel

with consequences no one sees coming.

She always thought that Julie would be right there

by her side when she married Andrew.

Interviews and witness testimony corroborate

that Andrew Holland was one of the people

helping Julie and Brielle move in.

and risk losing her to Brielle completely.

and hopes that her worries are unfounded.

the three women started to spend a lot of time together.

On the surface, everything seemed fine.

- Jealously is, indeed, a very powerful emotion.

It creates anger when someone feels

that someone they love is being taken away from them.

The fact that jealousy creates unhealthy emotional states

and irrational behavior is very well founded.

- Brielle had shown up out of nowhere

and almost immediately became the dominant woman

in what used to be Emily's social circle.

It wasn't just about reasserting control.

Emily had to figure out how to get Brielle

out of her and Julie's life.

For Brielle, her new life in Camden Harbor

is just beginning to heat up.

- Nobody in Camden Harbor knew who Brielle was.

She was a beautiful new face in a small town,

and for her, finding a man was easy.

that he's the latest in a long line of men

Well-known in Camden Harbor, Caleb McEntire

is a man who's used to getting what he wants.

was well known around town.

What wasn't as well known

were the multiple reports filed against him

by many women that he was supposedly dating.

Harassment, violent outbursts,

but no charges were ever actually filed.

But this all became significant,

of course, in light of later events.

- From everything we learned after the fact,

Caleb and Brielle started a steady relationship

almost immediately after they first met.

Interviews stated they were seen together

on a daily basis, at the beach, in town, local bars.

They were clearly an item in Camden Harbor.

- Right after they moved in, I met Julie and Brielle.

- Good morning, guys. - Good morning.

- I knew who Caleb was.

I'd seen him out at the bars sometimes, around town.

He could be intense

and definitely was always on the lookout for the ladies.

- You all right? Call you later, all right?

- What?

Why didn't you guys ever hook up?

- Brielle dropped a bomb on Julie and Andrew one day

by asking why they'd never dated.

It was an innocent question,

but it may have made them both a little uncomfortable.

- I think, in a way, it would have been natural

for Julie to question why she wasn't the one dating Andrew.

She was the one who had actually met him first,

and they were, by all accounts,

both attractive and good friends.

But the fact is that Julie hadn't dated since high school.

- She loved Andrew as a friend and thought he was a great guy,

but her insecurity about her accident scar held her back.

With Andrew, maybe she didn't act quickly enough.

Not like Emily did.

Given her hidden feelings for Andrew,

the wedding planning was difficult for Julie.

And it became even more so

when she realized Brielle would not be a part of it.

- Up until that day, Julie hadn't been aware

of how badly Emily resented Brielle.

- What if we put Brielle at that table?

- Brielle's not invited.

- Emily let all of her pent-up anger for Brielle

come pouring out, accusing her of sleeping around

- And then Julie realized that Emily had been

faking her friendship with Brielle all along.

- Watching Emily just switch on

an entirely different personality

when Brielle arrived

would have been very disturbing.

Julie must have felt,

if deception came so easily to Emily about Brielle,

that maybe her friendship with Emily

wasn't so genuine after all.

Julie starts to question

her long-standing friendship with Emily.

- They'd been through a lot together,

and Julie wasn't used to questioning Emily's loyalty.

She felt like she had to choose between defending Brielle

and staying loyal to her oldest friend.

It wasn't easy for her.

- At this point, Labor Day was around the corner,

and summer was almost over.

Desperate to figure out

how to get things back to the way they used to be,

Julie goes to tell Brielle the truth

and ask her for a favor.

- We don't know exactly when the conversation took place,

but apparently Julie decided to level with Brielle

about how much Emily disliked her.

I need you and Emily to be friends.

- Brielle would've seen through Emily's act.

She was used to other women not liking her,

and it was easy for her to ignore.

Julie was the one that she cared about,

and if she needed to fake

a friendship with Emily for her,

then so be it.

- I'll do it for you.

A few weeks later, on Labor Day weekend,

Julie and Brielle throw a surprise birthday party

for Emily,

hoping it will bring everyone together.

Surprise!

But there are more surprises in store

than just the party.

- We created a timeline of key events that led up to the crime.

I put that surprise party for Emily's birthday

at the top of the list.

- Everything was Brielle's idea.

- Brielle and Julie's plan was going perfectly at first.

Emily seemed touched by everything

Brielle had done for her.

- There were a lot of witnesses at the party,

so we have a clear picture of what happened.

A few hours into the party, after a high level of alcohol

had been consumed, the party took an odd turn.

- While Brielle had been making nice

with Emily for Julie's sake,

she hadn't been paying much attention to Caleb.

More importantly, Brielle hadn't noticed

how Caleb had been acting lately.

What she didn't realize is that Caleb's perception

of their relationship had changed.

Never one to settle down in the past,

he had become strongly attached to Brielle.

- When you consider his history of intense outbursts,

it's almost surprising

that things didn't go wrong sooner than they did.

Julie's attempt at burying the hatchet

between her two best friends is about to backfire

and, in a surprising twist, ignites a series of events

that derail the lives of everyone involved.

A surprise birthday party for Emily

was supposed to be the first step

towards a happy friendship for Emily, Julie, and Brielle.

But Caleb McEntire sets off a chain of events

that will change their lives forever.

- Caleb was so hung up on Brielle,

he couldn't even stand to see her flirt with other guys.

- You mind holding this for me? Appreciate that.

- As the evening progressed,

Caleb wouldn't let Brielle out of his sight.

Their PDA was out of control.

It was inappropriate

and made everyone at the party uncomfortable,

especially Emily.

Bear in mind, this is supposed to be Emily's party.

Brielle was supposed to be getting on her good side.

But instead, she was making a scene,

just like Emily told Julie she always did.

Julie's plan to unite her two friends

is falling apart.

- And then Caleb did something totally out of character.

I mean, it really shocked everyone.

- Hey, guys, um, just in front of all these lovely people...

- Caleb was a cocky guy

that almost always got what he wanted

when he wanted it.

- Ever since I met you,

you have just been the light of my world.

- But in his brash overconfidence,

he often did things without thinking of the consequences.

- Miss Brielle... - Oh!

- Will you marry me?

- From Emily's perspective,

Caleb's proposal had completely upstaged her

at her own birthday party...

The party Brielle supposedly had helped

plan and pull off.

I mean, Emily felt outraged.

By association, Emily was also beginning

to lose trust in Julie.

Andrew was the only person she could rely on,

or so she thought.

- Andrew was basically a painfully shy person

and suffered from a lot of social anxiety.

He certainly cared for Emily,

but between her grand wedding plans

and her constant issues with Brielle being around,

he must have simply felt cast aside by her.

- Brielle is ruining everything.

- Emily only seemed to engage Andrew

when she needed something from him,

and, in his inebriation, he stood up to her.

- You need to stop drinking.

- Get over yourself.

- However, it was just another example

of him not being good enough for anyone.

Brielle steps outside to clear her head

and encounters Andrew.

- Hey.

- Caleb's declaration of love was the end of it for Brielle.

She had never had a real relationship,

and that was by choice.

Caleb wanted to get way too serious way too fast,

and that was not Brielle's style.

- You okay?

- Brielle's style was to choose

the men she wanted when she wanted,

and she didn't care about the consequences.

They weren't close, but maybe those few glances and looks

revealed some deep, unspoken connection.

Maybe it was just a tipsy late-night kiss.

- Emily caught her fiancé, Andrew,

in a compromising situation.

- Hey!

- Witnesses reported that Emily

then verbally and physically assaulted Brielle.

- I didn't mean it!

- You can sleep with everyone else--

- I heard screaming coming from their patio.

Brielle and Julie's friend Emily

were in a huge catfight.

- Let go of me!

- They were really going at each other.

I'm surprised no one called the cops.

- Let go! Let go!

But it wasn't just Emily that felt betrayed.

- Julie was appalled.

Everything had blown up in her face,

and she really didn't know who to blame.

Did Brielle seduce Andrew?

Did he take advantage of her?

None of it made any sense.

- It wasn't just Emily who was upset by that kiss.

Caleb had seen it as well, and that really set him off.

For Emily, the kiss is proof she's always wanted

that Brielle can't be trusted, but it comes at a price.

Now her wedding to Andrew hangs in the balance.

- I'm really sorry, Emily.

- Andrew knew he screwed up big-time,

and there was no way of hiding it.

And what made it all worse was that he'd been drinking.

- Andrew had spent a lifetime feeling like

he wasn't good enough, and his marriage to Emily

was part of proving to his family

that he was capable of so much more.

Now all of that was in jeopardy.

- Andrew apologized over and over,

but Emily refused to let it go.

She wasn't about to call off the wedding,

but she was making him pay for it in other ways,

which put him in a tailspin.

- This simply brought him back

to the relentless pressure from childhood.

His parents would just drill it into him

that he was never good enough.

Andrew wasn't the only one

reeling from the events of the party.

- Caleb was deeply affected by the rejection from Brielle.

He wasn't able to shake it off,

and it grew worse and worse over time.

All Andrew has left is the slender hope

that Emily will forgive him.

- Emily's resistance was wearing down.

She loved Andrew, was aware of his drinking problem.

And I think she may have realized she was really angrier

at Brielle than she was at her own fiancé.

- Even though she was angry with Andrew,

it only pushed her to go after

a perfect wedding and Brielle out of their lives for good.

In her mind, that was still something she could make work.

- But Andrew's alcohol problem

was worse than she had realized.

- We discovered two key pieces of information

related to that time period.

First, Andrew Holland was drinking on a consistent basis,

which is counter to what his fiancée believed.

And, more importantly,

Julie was, herself, hiding an addiction

that will play a key role in the crime.

- Julie's pain management after her car accident

would have been a gateway to opiate addiction.

We now know that when she was under emotional stress,

she would turn back to pills.

- Julie's injuries from the car accident

left her in chronic pain.

She had no trouble getting legitimate prescriptions.

When Brielle realizes that kissing Andrew

to get back at Emily

has affected her relationship with Julie,

she attempts damage control.

- I think, at that point, Brielle was coming

to the long-overdue realization that many of her problems

with other women were really of her own making.

- Julie, I'm sorry.

- Brielle obviously valued her friendship with Julie.

It was the only true friendship she had.

- I know what I did was wrong.

- Julie wasn't just friends with Emily.

She was also very close to Andrew.

So we have to ask,

did Julie wish it was her

She would numb her feelings with drugs.

Distracted by their unraveling friendship,

Brielle and Julie fail to recognize

that danger is right outside.

Caleb has been brooding for days over Brielle.

His love for her is becoming an obsession.

- From what we knew about Caleb,

it was apparent he wouldn't have just let Brielle go.

He had a history of being violent with women

who he felt rejected or humiliated him.

Brielle had done both.

As summer ends and cold autumn winds

begin to converge on Camden Harbor,

the lives of five young friends have twisted together

from passion and jealousy.

But some hope remains.

- Despite all the drama between Emily, Andrew, and Brielle,

Emily's wedding was still on.

She accepted his pledge to quit drinking and get it together.

She also wouldn't have wanted to go through the humiliation

of calling off her wedding.

- Emily displayed the classic symptoms of an enabler.

They believe all of the empty promises of the addict

because they want to,

not because there is any indication of change.

As we later learned, Andrew was still drinking

and barely hanging on to his facade of sobriety.

- Where have you been?

- Of course, most functional alcoholics

can't keep things together for long.

- Are you drunk?

- Andrew was approaching his breaking point.

- It's literally 1:30 in the afternoon.

- Emily was furious he'd broken his pledge to quit drinking.

- I can't even believe I'm marrying you.

- In her mind, they would only get back together

if he stayed sober.

- Nothing is ever good enough for you.

- And as we know from his past,

when Andrew is backed into a corner,

his reactions can be very unpredictable.

While Emily wasn't exactly making him happy,

he knew that she was the only option

to regain any sort of respect from his family.

- Emily, it's okay.

- Julie was quick to call out Emily on her problems

with Andrew and their relationship.

- You should postpone the wedding.

You don't have to get married.

As Julie urges Emily to move on,

Brielle has decided she's not going anywhere.

- Brielle felt Emily was trying to run her out of town,

just like she had been run out before,

and she wasn't gonna let some small-town debutante

like Emily control her in any way.

- Brielle was adept at reading her surroundings

and must have noticed Julie's inconsistent behavior.

She knew Julie had been prescribed

opiate painkillers at various times.

It wasn't hard to figure out what was going on.

Brielle confirms her suspicion

that Julie is addicted to painkillers

and turns to an unlikely ally to help her friend.

- Can we meet up somewhere?

It's about Julie.

I know you don't want to talk to me,

but have you noticed Julie's been acting a little weird?

- I think Brielle was genuinely concerned for Julie.

Reaching out to Andrew was her only option.

- She's been taking these.

You have to talk to her.

- But she was also hoping that Andrew would tell Emily

about Julie's problem

and that somehow Emily would turn her back on Julie

and leave them alone.

If Emily is willing to turn her back on Andrew

for his addiction,

Brielle believes she just might turn her back on Julie as well.

- This is serious.

But Brielle miscalculates

exactly what Andrew's motives are for meeting her.

- Just stay out of it.

- What do you mean stay out-- - Just stay out of it.

- Andrew told Brielle exactly what he thought of her

and how much trouble she'd caused.

- You're ruining everyone's life.

- He basically blamed her for all of his problems.

Brielle's decision to confide in Andrew backfires,

and the consequences will be deadly.

- Andrew had indeed come to a bit of a crossroads.

He was facing the reality that he was going to lose Emily,

the last ounce of respect of his family,

and the inheritance that went along with it.

- Emily had been thinking a lot

about what Julie had said about the wedding,

and she decided her friend was right.

She needed to call off the engagement.

- What? - I've been talking to Julie.

And we both decided that it's best if we hold off until...

- Andrew thought that cutting off contact

and outwardly rejecting Brielle

was the key to getting Emily back.

Then he learned that it was actually Julie

that was keeping it from happening.

In his head, he was out of options, desperate,

and desperate people don't usually make sound decisions.

- There are some things about Julie that you don't know.

She's been trying to get in between us.

- Andrew told Emily that Julie was in love with him,

that Julie had plotted with Brielle

to help break them up with the kiss.

- She even put Brielle up to the kiss

to break us up.

I didn't want to tell you, but these are hers.

She's been lying to you.

- Did any of this make sense?

Emily wanted to believe it.

It was easier for her to believe Julie's bad behavior

than to believe that her own fiancé

had been unfaithful.

- She's been lying to you this whole time.

- Emily was still the enabler.

She still wanted to believe in the dream of Andrew

being a well-adjusted guy who could beat his demons.

She told Andrew she was going

to confront Julie and Brielle.

- It's just us.

- She'd make sure Julie and Brielle

would leave them alone once and for all.

- I'm certain that in that moment,

Andrew Holland had no idea

the chain of events his lie had set into motion.

Andrew and Emily have finally come together

to try to make things work,

but with the arrival of Halloween,

no one will be safe.

- Look at everything that I did today.

is the chance to become someone else,

to experience life outside the normal comfort zone.

the body of Brielle Abato

is discovered inside her residence.

from blunt force trauma to the head

at approximately 11:00 p.m. that night.

But Brielle is not the only victim

of this Halloween horror.

- Julie Dennings was discovered dead in her bedroom

when EMTs responded to the 911 call.

The coroner evaluated her death as forced asphyxiation...

- Most likely with a pillow that was found beside her.

We did find unidentified blood in the house.

Our immediate assumption was, the blood came

from defensive wounds on the killer.

While waiting for DNA results,

investigators focus on Caleb McEntire.

- I had Caleb brought in and questioned

within hours of discovering the bodies.

- Caleb had no alibi

and a history of violent behavior.

So slam dunk?

No.

His DNA just didn't match

the blood we found.

Emily Montgomery and Andrew Holland

were asked to submit to DNA testing.

They both agreed under pressure from Emily's family

to publicly clear her name.

His intention was to suffocate Julie

and make it look like she overdosed on pills.

- Brielle interrupted Andrew as he was suffocating Julie.

- She fled, and Andrew chased her

into the upstairs hallway.

- No!

- They struggled,

and Andrew eventually hit Brielle with a lamp.

- No!

- That blow was sufficient to kill her.

- During Brielle and Andrew's struggle,

he suffered a cut to his wrist that made him bleed.

We found traces of blood on the lamp and on the patio door.

- That was the evidence we were able to use to convict him.

Andrew Holland was convicted on two counts

of first-degree murder

and was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.

- It seemed that Caleb truly did love Brielle.

He was devastated by her murder.

- Emily admitted that she bears some guilt for what happened

and, believe it or not, stands by Andrew.

The real tragedy is that two weeks

after Andrew was arrested,

Emily found out she was pregnant.
