from the other murders

that I'd covered
as a crime reporter.

I mean, so many people
had a piece in this one.

And all of them,
one way or another--

they were all victims.

Every single one.

A crime like this
doesn't just happen.

It's the end
of a complex chain of events

over a long, hot summer.

The first link in that chain
is Faye Towson.

- Looking at it
from the outside,

Faye should've had
a perfect childhood.

I mean,
her family was very wealthy.

They lived in a very affluent
neighborhood in St. Louis,

but, when it seems
too good to be true,

mostly, it's not.

- There were a lot of secrets
in that family.

- In my involvement
with this case,

I was tasked with drawing up
psychological profiles

of the key figures.

I started with Faye Towson.

Her father had
a severe alcohol problem

and verbally abusive.

And her mother, well,

what we often see
in these cases

is that the mother becomes
emotionally withdrawn

and stops functioning
as a caregiver.

- What's wrong with you?

- Needless to say,

this had an adverse effect
on Faye.

- Ray, stop looking at me like that.

- She was starting to act out,

dabbling in drugs,
just scraping by in school.

She was afraid of her father,
and she hated her mother.

It must've been hell.

- Stop.

- I think her parents
just didn't want to admit

they'd failed her so badly,

so when Faye didn't
graduate high school.

that was it.

After years of bad behavior,

Faye's parents disowned her.

- They gave her some money

and told her she didn't live
in their home anymore.

- She was
intermittently homeless...

Suffered various drug dependencies.

It took her a heroin overdose
to convince her she needed

to get her habit under control
before it killed her.

Seven years after leaving home,

Faye has sworn off drugs
and alcohol

and has left St. Louis

for the sun-kissed beaches
of Jacksonville.

She lands a pretty good job
at a catering company.

from our perspective,

Andre Covey was the good boy.

Andre Covey
is a 28-year-old

culinary school graduate.

Polite and soft-spoken,

he's supposed to be a move towards a better life for Faye,

but he is the first step
to something much, much worse.

- Andre Covey's childhood
was almost the mirror opposite

of Faye's.

Andre's childhood
was warm and caring,

despite economic hardship.

- From what we heard,
everyone loved this guy.

I heard the same phrase,
like, three times.

"Andre would give you
the shirt off his back."

So how he got tangled up
in this thing...

None of us got it.

We still don't.

Andre forms
an instant connection

with his new coworker.

For Faye, it's a welcome break
from her troubled past.

- No?

- People who experience
emotional trauma like Faye's

often struggle
to form personal attachments.

Raised in a nurturing home
by a single mother,

his own instincts
were to nurture others,

and he probably understood
Faye's needs,

even if she couldn't or wouldn't
articulate them herself.

Just kind of relax with the boys
for a little bit.

But now she had evidence.

The only question was what she

but then it became
really obvious

that they were having
an affair.

Faye would just show up early
for kickboxing class,

and they'd kind of disappear
somewhere for 20 minutes,

and we all wondered when

People are out,

interacting more
with each other,

and the heat
can really put people on edge.

But what's interesting

is that most of these increases
are domestic in nature.

Altercations that could be verbal

or assault and battery,
they--they escalate.

And someone they're close to
becomes a victim.

In mid-August,

the volatile maze
of relationships

among Faye, Andre,
Jamil, and Sandra

begins to unravel.

Andre is in love with Faye,

who just wants to be friends.

Faye is hot and heavy
with Jamil,

but Jamil's wife
just busted them

fooling around.

The fuse has been lit,

and everything
is about to blow up.

- Jamil told me later
what happened

when his wife showed up.

- How you doing?

- I was just in the back,

giving a tour to a new client.

a very insecure childhood.

wind up on the streets.

Even though Faye and Deanna

were raised
in very different environments,

they had experienced
many of the same hardships.

to my family,

so I don't really have
any support.

I know how that feels.

- So when Deanna told Faye
that she'd been mugged

and lost her wallet,
credit cards, cash, all of it,

Faye was reminded
of what her life had been like

not so long ago.

to stay.

- She gave Deanna some cash
and invited her

to crash with her
in Andre's apartment.

on Andre's kindness,

assuming he'd welcome another
troubled woman into his home.

with drugs and alcohol,

Deanna just listened
like a good friend would.

that he was losing Faye.

He wasn't
about to close the door

on Faye's money so soon,

so he just switched on
the charm,

and he begged her
to let him set things right.

- Faye was conflicted.

I think part of her knew that
Jamil wasn't what he seemed,

but, deep down,
she wanted that stable life

he said
they could create together.

- Deanna was the one
who pushed Faye

to give him another chance,

so Faye set out
to patch things up with Jamil.

She even decided
to ask her parents

to make him happy.

the body of a Jacksonville murder victim

is identified.

Faye Towson.

- The motel room
had been cleaned,

but we were able to discover
some crucial information.

Fingerprints from both Andre and Deanna

were all over the room.

Faye's blood in the iron.

It was pretty clear
forensic evidence.

On the night of the murder,

Deanna lies in wait
at the hotel.

But when Faye arrives,
she's not alone.
