but this case hit the papers, and I just had to know more.

It was so different from the other murders

that I'd covered as a crime reporter.

I mean, so many people had a piece in this one.

And all of them, one way or another--

they were all victims.

Every single one.

A crime like this doesn't just happen.

It's the end of a complex chain of events

over a long, hot summer.

The first link in that chain is Faye Towson.

- Looking at it from the outside,

Faye should've had a perfect childhood.

I mean, her family was very wealthy.

They lived in a very affluent neighborhood in St. Louis,

but, when it seems too good to be true,

mostly, it's not.

- You don't care about that? Don't look at her!

Look at me!

- There were a lot of secrets in that family.

- Look at me!

- In my involvement with this case,

I was tasked with drawing up psychological profiles

of the key figures.

I started with Faye Towson.

Her father had a severe alcohol problem

and verbally abusive.

And her mother, well,

what we often see in these cases

is that the mother becomes emotionally withdrawn

and stops functioning as a caregiver.

- What's wrong with you?

- Needless to say,

this had an adverse effect on Faye.

- Ray, stop looking at me like that.

- She was starting to act out,

dabbling in drugs, just scraping by in school.

She was afraid of her father, and she hated her mother.

It must've been hell.

- Stop.

- I think her parents just didn't want to admit

they'd failed her so badly,

so when Faye didn't graduate high school.

that was it.

After years of bad behavior,

Faye's parents disowned her.

- They gave her some money

and told her she didn't live in their home anymore.

- She was intermittently homeless...

Suffered various drug dependencies.

It took her a heroin overdose to convince her she needed

to get her habit under control before it killed her.

Seven years after leaving home,

Faye has sworn off drugs and alcohol

and has left St. Louis

for the sun-kissed beaches of Jacksonville.

- Faye's about 25 now,

trying to get it together in a new place.

She lands a pretty good job at a catering company.

And this is where she meets one of the people

who will totally change her life.

Andre Covey.

everyone that's involved in a case.

It helps us piece together how everyone fits in,

so in this case, from our perspective,

Andre Covey was the good boy.

Andre Covey is a 28-year-old

culinary school graduate.

Polite and soft-spoken,

he's supposed to be a move towards a better life for Faye,

but he is the first step to something much, much worse.

- Andre Covey's childhood was almost the mirror opposite

of Faye's.

Andre's childhood was warm and caring,

despite economic hardship.

- From what we heard, everyone loved this guy.

I heard the same phrase, like, three times.

"Andre would give you the shirt off his back."

So how he got tangled up in this thing...

None of us got it.

We still don't.

Andre forms an instant connection

with his new coworker.

For Faye, it's a welcome break from her troubled past.

- No?

- People who experience emotional trauma like Faye's

often struggle to form personal attachments.

Raised in a nurturing home by a single mother,

his own instincts were to nurture others,

and he probably understood Faye's needs,

even if she couldn't or wouldn't articulate them herself.

- Faye was still estranged from her family at that point.

She had very little money

and was living in a budget motel

in not a very nice part of town.

So when Andre offered to rent her

the spare room in his apartment...

But Andre isn't motivated by kindness.

For him, it was love at first sight.

She had this sophistication that Andre found irresistible.

Things were really looking up for Faye.

I mean, her addiction was under control,

she had a good friend in Andre,

and she was making enough at her new job to join a gym.

- And that's where she met

Jamil Dorrig.

All the money that Jamil was spending at clubs

didn't make sense on a personal trainer's salary.

His wife owned that gym, not Jamil.

Jamil's wife owned him.

Jamil's life of partying and pleasure

is entirely supported by his wife.

Five years older than Jamil,

Sandra Dorrig is known as a pillar in the community.

- Sandra Dorrig was a well-known woman

in Jacksonville.

She was a top earner at a hedge fund.

Well on her way to an executive office.

A self-made woman too.

She started in college as an intern

and just made it happen.

A very smart, driven woman.

Sandra wanted it all,

and, to her credit, she got it.

But the domestic bliss

Sandra has worked so hard to achieve

is about to be shattered.

- Mmm.

- Jamil was pretty careless

about keeping his affair secret.

- Got a few clients,

and then we're probably gonna go out later.

Just kind of relax with the boys for a little bit.

- Sandra may have suspected that Jamil was unfaithful...

But now she had evidence.

The only question was what she was planning to do about it.

- At first, we thought she was just flirting with Jamil,

but then it became really obvious

that they were having an affair.

Faye would just show up early for kickboxing class,

and they'd kind of disappear somewhere for 20 minutes,

and we all wondered when his wife was gonna find out.

- Jamil?

Jamil.

Jamil!

- How you doing? - Hey.

- This is Faye. - Hi.

- Really?

- One thing I've seen throughout my career

is that someone feels like they've been betrayed,

there's no telling what they're capable of.

- Are you sleeping with my husband?

- Calm down! - You need to back up!

- What are you doing?

- Almost every summer, there's an uptick in homicides.

People are out,

interacting more with each other,

and the heat can really put people on edge.

But what's interesting

is that most of these increases are domestic in nature.

Altercations that could be verbal

or assault and battery, they--they escalate.

And someone they're close to becomes a victim.

In mid-August,

the volatile maze of relationships

among Faye, Andre, Jamil, and Sandra

begins to unravel.

Andre is in love with Faye,

who just wants to be friends.

Faye is hot and heavy with Jamil,

but Jamil's wife just busted them

fooling around.

The fuse has been lit,

and everything is about to blow up.

- Jamil told me later what happened

when his wife showed up.

- How you doing? - Hey.

- I was just in the back,

giving a tour to a new client.

This is Faye. - Hi.

- Really?

Are you sleeping with my husband?

- Calm down. - You need to back up.

- Jamil said he had to physically separate them.

Something bad was gonna happen

and the other uses drugs and alcohol,

it's not a healthy situation.

I got to unwind,

especially when I'm dealing with the wife.

- Jamil kept Faye in the dark

in terms of his relationship with his wife.

He told her that Sandra was mentally unstable

and that he was trying to find a way to leave her,

but Jamil didn't have any intention of leaving Sandra

until he was able to secure financial means

to support his lifestyle.

- I've had a few thoughts. - Okay.

- Your folks.

I was wondering, maybe you can pay them a visit

or give 'em a call.

- Why?

- This part wasn't hard to understand.

It was money.

Jamil had an expensive lifestyle,

and he didn't want to give it up.

Greed is a powerful motivator.

- It's not that easy.

- This will be good for us. For you.

- With Faye's money,

Jamil could get rid of Sandra once and for all,

but all Faye heard was Jamil asking her

to take an important step in their relationship

so that they could finally be together.

So she hopped on a bus to St. Louis.

and it had nearly ruined her life,

but by confronting her past instead of burying it,

she had a real chance to heal those old wounds.

Faye found that her parents had begun

to come to terms with their shared past as well.

Her father had gotten sober and wanted to be close

to his daughter again after so many years,

and it turned out to be a healing reunion.

Faye had gotten her life on track,

and in Faye's eyes,

Jamil was a hero for pushing her to reconnect.

Faye's visit home stirs hope

but on her way back to Jacksonville,

she encounters the final link in a deadly chain,

Deanna Liffy.

and they really had a lot in common.

- So Florida is the fresh start.

- Hopefully.

- Deanna was a nurse,

was starting over in Jacksonville

with a new job,

and she'd had a troubled relationship

with her family, just like Faye did.

She described a tough childhood

in which she largely had to fend for herself.

And it was a very insecure childhood.

Many girls raised this way wind up on the streets.

Even though Faye and Deanna

were raised in very different environments,

they had experienced many of the same hardships.

- I don't really talk to my family,

so I don't really have any support.

I'm just-- - I'm sorry.

I know how that feels.

- So when Deanna told Faye that she'd been mugged

and lost her wallet, credit cards, cash, all of it,

Faye was reminded of what her life had been like

not so long ago.

- I have to find a place to stay.

- She gave Deanna some cash and invited her

to crash with her in Andre's apartment.

- Hey!

- Faye was counting on Andre's kindness,

assuming he'd welcome another troubled woman into his home.

- I was wondering... can she stay here?

- What? - Please.

- But he was skeptical at first.

- Deanna being there meant

he would have even less time alone with Faye.

He was still hoping

their relationship would turn romantic,

but Deanna's presence could easily get in the way.

But Faye can still count on one thing.

- Andre's the nice guy, the good friend.

It's not like he's gonna send this poor girl out

on the streets, right?

- Okay.

- Andre agreed to let Deanna crash on the couch

for a couple of nights.

He thought it was a romantic gesture to Faye,

something he was doing for her,

but, once again, she didn't get it.

She was just dying to see Jamil.

- I'm happy. I'm happy for you.

So did you discuss about them, you know,

finally supporting you financially?

- No.

- Jamil thought Faye had understood

that the point of her trip was to get an allowance

or a trust fund from her parents.

To him, everything was about money.

- I was clear on what I wanted you to do for us.

- Jamil told Faye that they couldn't live on love alone.

- You need to get yourself together,

because, right now, I'm gone.

- What? - I'm gone.

- And if she couldn't get money from her family,

they were through.

- This was a serious blow to Faye.

And unfortunately, she went back

to what she always did

when she was vulnerable and scared.

Faye hits rock bottom and is rapidly falling apart.

- So, naturally, she turned to the one person in the world

she felt she could trust.

- Just calm down.

Andre is in love with Faye.

He thinks he's her guardian angel

and will do whatever it takes to protect her.

- From what we knew,

Andre was normally the peace-keeper.

really seemed to be pushing him over the edge.

The lives of Faye, Deanna,

Andre, Sandra, and Jamil

- But that doesn't allow you to threaten somebody.

- Are you kidding me? - Oh, my God.

- Are you kidding me? - I can't even talk to you.

- Are you kidding me? He's married!

You should leave him!

- Andre was shocked

and upset

and just took off for a few hours.

Faye turned to her new friend, Deanna, for advice.

She poured out her heart about her rocky affair with Jamil,

her problems with drugs and alcohol,

all of it.

Deanna just listened like a good friend would.

- Jamil knew that he was losing Faye.

He wasn't about to close the door

on Faye's money so soon,

so he just switched on the charm,

and he begged her to let him set things right.

- Faye was conflicted.

I think part of her knew that Jamil wasn't what he seemed,

but, deep down, she wanted that stable life

he said they could create together.

- Deanna was the one who pushed Faye

to give him another chance,

so Faye set out to patch things up with Jamil.

She even decided to ask her parents

for the money to make him happy.

- Do you forgive me?

- Mm-hmm.

- You do? - Yeah.

- Okay.

Missed you.

But Deanna's kind words

have a hidden motive.

- Deanna was very good at reading people.

She knew how vulnerable Andre was

after his fight with Faye,

and she used that knowledge to take advantage of him.

- But now Deanna began to offer the intimacy

trying to turn things around just like Faye,

but one important difference,

Quite frankly, she felt left out.

Her two best friends were creating a world

that she was not a part of.

Deanna had achieved with Andre

the type of relationship that Faye desired from Jamil.

Already unstable and back to drinking,

there's not much more Faye can handle,

but nothing could prepare her for what happens next.

- Hey, babe.

Babe, what's wrong?

- I doubt that Andre was emotionally prepared

for such a serious development.

He cared for Deanna,

but, at the same time, he barely knew her.

Yet, he refused to reject her over the unplanned pregnancy

as her previous lover had.

- He was raised by a single mother,

and he wasn't going to let his own child grow up

without a father as he had.

He always wanted to do the right thing.

In this case, it meant marrying Deanna,

so he proposed.

- You know, you're cute when you cry.

Deanna can't wait to break the news

to her best friend.

- So, I have something I want to tell you.

Are pregnant!

- Faye was shocked.

Like, who is this woman?

How did she get embedded in Faye's world so fast?

Deanna was supposed to crash on the couch a few nights.

but when she brought up the sister,

Faye began to realize

that she needed to protect Andre

in the same way he had done for her in the past.

- Faye started to sneak around the apartment,

waited until Andre and Deanna were out

to look through her things,

digging for dirt.

Well, she found it.

Same photo. Different name.

Deanna was clearly hiding something,

and Faye was determined to find out what it was.

you know, asking to speak with Deanna Liffy.

She would've felt overwhelmingly responsible,

really backed Jamil into a corner.

He either had to pay up

or risk losing the gym and his coveted lifestyle.

Jamil is about to lose everything

and is tired of being controlled by his wife

and now manipulated by Deanna.

Pushed to a dangerous place,

he decides to do things on his own terms.

Everything comes to a climax

- We're finished.

- Faye had finally reached rock bottom.

She lost her best friend,

her new friend had been revealed as a liar,

and she was finally able to see through Jamil,

so she made it clear it was over.

- So you're serious. You're gonna break up with me.

- And then she pretty much drunk-dialed Andre

and asked him to come pick her up.

With Jamil out of her life,

Faye knows there is one more person to get rid of,

but she'll need help to do it.

- The surveillance video shows Deanna

arriving at the hotel where Faye was staying.

She used a copy of the key card

to let herself into Faye's room.

We learned later

that she had conned a clerk into giving her a card.

- So here we are at the point of no return.

Deanna is caught off guard,

because when Faye arrives, she is not alone.

- A body was discovered in a dump site

in a rural area

on the outskirts of Jacksonville.

- So, obviously a homicide.

But who is the victim and who is the killer?

On August 23, 2010,

the body of a Jacksonville murder victim

is identified.

Faye Towson.

- The motel room had been cleaned,

but we were able to discover some crucial information.

Fingerprints from both Andre and Deanna

were all over the room.

Faye's blood in the iron.

It was pretty clear forensic evidence.

On the night of the murder,

Deanna lies in wait at the hotel.

But when Faye arrives, she's not alone.

- Okay. - Faye, what are you doing?

This is what you wanted.

- And that was it.

- The crime scene corroborated

the testimonies we gathered later.

Deanna grabbed the motel's iron and struck Faye on the head,

but this was not the fatal blow.

Faye was unconscious.

- Andre! Stop!

The baby! Stop!

I can't go to jail,

because of the baby.

- Deanna convinced Andre

that his child would grow up without a mother

unless they made the crime go away.

- The coroner's report indicated Faye died from suffocation.

Faye's head wound would've been survivable.

Ultimately, Andre killed her.

We arrested Andre and Deanna

as soon as the lab report came back.

- Deanna was convicted of second-degree felony murder

and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Andre was convicted of first-degree murder

and is now serving life in prison.

- Andre was always the nice guy who finished last,

and in the end, that's exactly what happened.

- Deanna's child was born while she was behind bars.

Andre declined to take a paternity test,

willfully believing the child was his.

His family is raising their son,

who will grow up without knowing his father.

- Sandra and Jamil?

Still married, believe it or not.

Knowing those two,

it sounds like a pretty grim punishment

all by itself.

And as for Faye Towson?

She was an innocent victim

so close to getting her life on track.

A promising life cut short,

all because of money, jealousy, and a web of lies.
