[ To Be A Better Man ]

Episode 5

Jiang Lai, you are here.

I heard that your boyfriend came back from America.

How is it going? Are you stressed out now?

Is This all made by Jiang Lai?

What's the profound hatred between your sister and you?

What's this supposed to mean?

She has been spoiled since her childhood.

She is truly unruly.

No.

She used to be unruly, have a temper like a wilful princess and love talking back.

However, she has changed completely since she came back from Shenzhen(city name).

Look around the house, is this just wilfulness?

This is out of range actually.

Is this something to do with Chen Fang?

Chen Fang's died.

Died?

How did he die?

——Does it have anything to do with you?——It has nothing to do with me.

Hello?

I forgot to ask you that what the name of your former boyfriend is?

What are you talking about?

Maybe I will take a shine to him.

Keeping it in the family, right?

She is a totally psycho now. Ignore her.

Open your eyes

Tell me your story

I see the memory

[ America ]Coming down from your tears

Did your eyes smile or it was sorrow

I can tell when you look at other side

What makes me so weak

I think it's something called love

Turn on your life

Start up your story

I see the steps of your living

So beautiful.

If I can wear this when I get married

I'll be contented.

Do you like it that much?

I'll buy it for you.

No, I just say it, not really mean it.

How much is this? Can we afford it?

Very pretty.

Ok, let's go.

Ok, we have had a look. Enough.

You really like it.

It's okay.

My god! You carry this back!

Fortunately you love this dress.

I won't be able to carry if it's the Statue of Liberty that you love.

Why do you laugh?

It's just a dress.

Are you a fool?

It's the shoes in the shopwindow that I love!

Listen, don't do anything illegal anymore.

You'll be arrested if you get caught.

So you don't like this dress.

It was the shoes that you were looking at, right?

You crack me up.

Ok, wait.

No, come back.

Come back.

What are you going to do?

What if you got caught when you came back?

Are you stupid?

Didn't you like that pair of shoes?

What's the smell on you today?

What?

Take a shower.

Ok.

What do you mean by "take a shower"?

Go to bed when you finish the shower. It's dark.

How do we sleep?

What?

Sleep just like before?

Or what?

You want to be accompanied to get sleep?

Yeeeeeeeeees

“Yes”?

Yes what

Turn back.

Turn back!

Jing, are you asleep?

Yeah.

Are you cold?

I'm not cold.

I'm very cold.

Don't stand there then and go to bed.

I mean go to your bed!

Go to my bed?

I‘ve misheard. I thought you let me in.

I'd like to watch you for a while.

I'll leave a little bit later, ok?

Have you watched enough?

Not yet.

No, I have to go.

What's wrong?

Something will happen if i keep watching.

I 'll watch you for a little bit more time.

Don't touch me, don't touch me.

You are alright but I'm not.Take you hands off.

Something'll happen if you not.

Don't touch me.

-No, I have to go.-Why are you not serious?

I definitely have to go.

I really must go.

-Jing.-Yeah.

Are you excited?

I'm not excited as you.

I'm excited.

Let me calm down.

One sheep, two sheep.

Three sheep.

Start up your story

I see the steps of your livng

Lu Yuan.

What's wrong?

What happened?

Say something.

Gan Jing, I'm wrong.I'm sorry.

I've been wrong about everything since the very first day.

But it's ok. I'll correct this mistake on my own.

I won't let anyone who attempts to hurt you escape,

including me.

Where have you been the whole day?

I'm asking you.

Have you heard?

I'm very sleepy.

Did you hang out and drink?

I called you so many times, why didn't you answer?

Didn't you see it?

Stop being so noisy.

Sit up.

Make things clear before you sleep.

Did you sleep with a certain woman?

You were stuck in the room by her husband, right?

Are you finished?

It's none of your business. I'm neither your dad or your husband.

Do you have anything to do?

What do you want by staring at me?

I'm quite upset inside.Don't you know why I am so upset?

Why I be like this? Why I drunk all night and didn't come back?

Do you know I'm really sad?

Monk Xuanzang experienced a lot and finally got the Buddhist scriptures.

But he found that people changed to believe the Jesuswhen he came back.

What's the big deal? I just didn't return for one night.

Boring.

Who cares about you coming back or not？

None worries even you starve to death outside. There is nothing to do with me whether you come back or not.

My grandma is the poorest, you know?

See.

These are dumplings grandma made for you. She waited all night.

They are put here and no one eat.

There is nothing to do with me whether you come back or not.

Look at yourself.

How can you expect others to love you but you don't even love yourself.

Do you know how much I worried about you last night?

What if you got drunk and crashed by a car?

What if you fell and died?

What if you were frozen to death? It was cold outside.

Do you want me to go to the hospital and see the doctor shake his head to me?

Do you want me to go to the morgue and identify the body？

I don't want to go there anymore! You know?

Look.

What did you take my dad's life for?

What do you take me for?

If there are no women you can keep looking.

My dad isn't here, can you find a new one for me?

Bastard.

Are you afraid I die outside.

Or are you afraid that I'll abandon you and run away.

Will you run?

What do you regard the house as?

A place to sleep.

So you have thought of abandoning me, a burden, for a long time, right?

You haven't run away because you can't go anywhere.

Anybody would think you're useless.

That's right. I am useless. I am definitely useless.

I have nowhere to go, like a dog everybody would abandon.

I'm a wild, stray dog. Are you satisfied?

Move aside!

Who are you two?

Why are you both in my home? What are you doing?

Ma'am, do you not recognize her?

Her?

Isn't she your granddaughter?

Peng Jiahe.

Peng Hai's daughter. Jiahe.

Jiahe?

Jiahe, when did you get back?

You've grown taller. And more beautiful.

Oh, I've missed you to death.

Grandma, then do you also recognize him?

Him.

He was my dad's–

I am Peng Hai.

Da Hai?

Old granny

Da Hai?

When did you get back?

You're back.

I've wished upon the stars and the moon, and finally I've wished you back here.

The environment in America must be quite different.

You've become darker, skinnier, and taller.

And how come your eyes have sunken in?

From hunger?

Your father's been hungry.

Let your mother go make a meal for you.

You've returned. Tell me sooner, honestly.

You're back.

I'll go cook now, alright? I'll go cook.

You're back.

You're back, you're back, you're back.

Did you see that?

If she can't recognize you, she can't recognize me.

If she can't recognize me, she can't recognize you.

We're two grasshoppers on a string.

It's best if she can't recognize. I'm going back to America.

Where? America?

Just looking at your grandmother's condition right now,

going back when you just returned, disappearing,

what is she goes crazy and knocks her head on the ground?

Y-y-you'll be responsible for the consequences, okay?

Shameless

Don't cross the line

I will cross the line. This is my house. What I say goes.

I'm your guardian, you have to listen to what I say!

Why should I listen to you? Isn't it you, you–

What's going on?

You've just returned, and you're both fighting?

I'm scolding a child that won't behave. I'm lecturing her!

You're not even my dad!

Jiahe! You cannot speak to your dad like this.

Was it so easy for your dad to raise you?

You must be filial. It's good that you've returned.

Jiahe, when you were little you were quite obedient and well-behaved.

You've only been in America for a few years, how did you become like this?

No regard for the rules.

Exactly.

Jiahe, we shouldn't learn from those foreigners and disregard your family's needs.

Do you understand?

Your dad just got back, he's tired.

Let's go. Come cook with your grandma in the kitchen, let your dad rest a bit.

Da Hai

Rest well, okay? Mum''ll go make dinner.

Come.

Come. Behave.

Come.

Do you feel no shame? Letting my grandma make you food.

You, a chef.

Would you believe me if I said I'm telling her you're not her son right now?

Come, old granny, get up, let me do it

- No need, you rest - Grandma, let him do it

- Go back to your room and rest - Let your dad rest

- Quickly, go back - You should rest

Look at you.

Acting as my dad. You're not even close.

Are you terrified that something will happen to my grandma?

That you can't look my dad in the eye when you die?

Can you even cook with your sense of taste?

Will it be edible?

Don't try me.

Would you believe me if I said I'm putting this down and leaving?

With your grandma's illness right now,

you have to be more careful.

Sometime, you should hang a sign on her chest with her home address and what not.

I should hang one on you too.

So you don't get lost after drinking too much.

What are you looking for?

Daily necessities (lit. firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar)

I, a 3 star Michelin head chef, reduced to a househusband

If your dad were to come back here,

I bet the first thing he'd do is make you some delicious food.

Okay. Coming up.

What kind of oil do they use over here?

Isn't it written there? Corn pi ya (germ) oil

What oil?

pi ya (germ)

Is this pronounced pi ya in your house? It's pronounced pei

Corn pei ya (germ) oil

Illiterate, you should really go and learn Chinese

Is it good?

It's good. It's very good.

In this lifetime, I've even lived to taste my own son's cooking. I'm so happy.

Is it salty?

Not at all.

Is it bland?

It's just right!

You should cook more in the future.

Jiahe, is that any way to speak to your dad?

Was it easy for your dad?

How many meals did he have to make for you in America to raise you?

Eat some more.

Come, Jia He, I need to make a soup. Come give me a hand.

I'll go, you eat.

Don't, don't, don't! Old granny, quickly, just eat

I'll be done in no time

What's the matter? Even hiding from my grandma?

Suppressing what evil?

What do you mean?

My pockets are cleaner than my face

You're bankrupt?

Nonsense

It's not that I don't want to look after your grandma,

but look at this old granny, did you see just now?

Just this appetite, can I maintain it? Can I afford it? I can't.

So you're saying you've got no money left at all?

When did I even have money?

But that's not right!

Then where's the money my dad left me?

Isn't the compensation with you?

You're not really thinking of appropriating, right?

What do you mean, appropriating?

I'm safe-keeping it. Didn't I already tell you on the plane?

I can only give that money to you once you're 18, you know?

- I'm looking after it on behalf of your dad - No, no, no

Where's your compensation?

Don't think I'm stupid. The American Law compensates the living much more than the dead.

I'm asking you, where's the compensation?

Where did your compensation go?

I'm asking! Where's the money?

Where did the money go?

Just a small issue like this requires hiding from me?

You've already come home

Don't worry over money

Da Hai, ask mum if you've run out of money

There's no need to tell your daughter.

She's still young, still studying. Where is she going to get you money from?

Mum has money.

I've saved a great deal of my retirement money.

Come.

Your mother has money.

Take it.

Take it!

Think of it as grocery money for the three of us over the next few days

When you've used it all, ask mum for more

Mum has money, a lot of it

I'll go eat dinner

Dinner's really delicious

Jia He, let's go. Eat dinner with grandma

Okay. You first, you go eat first

This is my grandma's money, I'm holding onto it for now.

Where's your money?

I'm asking, where's your compensation?

Did you gamble it all?

[ America ]

Do you see it? It's this building.

This place faces the ocean.

Good, right?

I've thought it all out already.

After I get my citizenship, apply for a bank loan, I'll buy this piece of land.

At that time you can come help me.

The two of us will do some serious work. Open up our own restaurant.

As for the head chef's position, I'll leave it for you.

However, the next time we meet, you have to call me your boss.

Do you dare to use a person without a sense of taste as your head chef?

You have me.

I'll be your tongue.

Don't worry, the two of us together has got to be the greatest head chef.

Is this your father?

I'm very sorry,

the victim was dead on arrival.

Do you have any other family? Is there someone we can contact for you?

Your father is your only family?

You're underage, so we notified Child Services.

They will be here soon.

There was another person in the car with my father.

Where is he?

Doctor.

Doctor, morphine.

This is my compensation.

I'll take this land.

Originally, we intended to sell the property to another Chinese gentleman.

But fortunately for you, he had a car accident. You're luckier than him.

I know, he is my brother.

- Really?- Yes.

See you.

Take care.

Jiahe, you didn't eat breakfast.

There's no rush, there's enough time.

Is it hot?

Eat this first.

- I say...- What?

I forgot to add sugar.

I really forgot the sugar.

This child...

Let's go, let's go home.

I'll carry it for you.

Forgetting your keys when you leave home.

It you purposefully make me skip work,

I won't be able to become the head chef.

You can only be the second cook.

Jiang Lai.

Coming.

What does this mean?

I'm looking for a boyfriend.

What kind of joke are you playing?

Aren't you the one who told me to forget the past and move on?

I want to be a good little sister who listens to her brother.

You're even getting mad about that?

If you genuinely want to move on, then I'll be happy for you.

But I feel like you're intentionally causing trouble.

You clearly know the relationship between the three of us.

Relationship?

You got involved with someone who was already in a relationship?

Do you think I'm as easy to fool as Gan Jing?

Even now, she still thinks you're a good person.

She thinks that you two are the same, that you don't know why her boyfriend left either.

But you've been sending people to America these past few years.

You know clearly what you're doing.

You know, you understand.

What do you think you know?

I know that Jiang Haokun likes to maneuver people behind their backs.

That's his style.

Perfect.

Let me introduce you.

This is my new boyfriend.

Pretty good body, right?

- What was your name...- I'm–

Your name's not important.

After all, in another two days, you might not be here.

Will you only feel better

if you do this?

Whatever.

Put on your clothes.

Get lost!

Jiang Lai.

I can't keep fighting anymore.

Let's break up.

I'm begging you, please let me go.

Please, make Jiang Haokun let me go.

I promise not to get involved with you again,

I won't contact you again.

I'll forget all our memories together, okay?

I beg you guys, please just let me go.

Let me go.

What's your relationship with him?

Enemies.

He's my enemy!

You tried to commit suicide because of him?

Let go of me!

Hey there.

I bought a drink for you. Work must be tiring.

Who are you? What are you doing?

This...

Alright, you don't have to drink it.

Let me tell you, your post is very important.

Keeping a watch on the company's doors,

making sure that no one causing trouble gets inside.

You seem like someone who would cause trouble.

Little miss, you're too young.

You can't even tell if a person's good or bad.

Little miss? I'm already older than 30.

You're older than 30? No way. You're still a child.

Hey, what did you come here for?

Little miss, let me be honest with you.

I have a something very important that I must deliver to CEO Jiang Haokun.

Hey, what's your CEO's schedule for the day?

Is he meeting anyone, especially any women?

I know who you are.

Paparazzi.

But our CEO isn't a celebrity, why do you want gossip about him?

Your CEO is really famous.

The people always on the covers of the financial magazines are much bigger than those other celebrities.

Who cares about those celebrities?

He's the real celebrity.

I'm a reporter for Fortune magazine.

Since you're so concerned about the CEO's personal life, it must be a tabloid magazine.

Fortune magazine doesn't gossip.

Hello, CEO Jiang.

Go.

Go, go, hurry and go.

Okay.

Do you want to drink this?

No.

Then I'll take it with me.

Hello, sir. Is there anything I can help you with?

Are you looking for someone, or...?

I'm looking for someone.

Do you have an appointment?

No.

Then do you know his room number? I can help you call him.

No.

I'm sorry, sir. This is a private club.

If you don't have an appointment, you cannot enter.

No...

No... Can't I just take a look inside?

Sir, you're not a member of our club. Please wait outside.

Yes.

What are you saying?

I'm just standing here. Can't I go inside to take a look?

I'm sorry, sir. We're just following the regulations here.

- I'm just looking around.- Sir, please cooperate with us.

- CEO Jiang.- Hello, CEO Jiang.

What are you doing here?

Watching you.

Why are you watching me?

I'm watching to make sure you don't do anything disgusting.

Like what?

Shouldn't you know what you've done?

Look at you, all dignified. And acting like you're so in love in front of Gan Jing. I...

When I think about it, I feel disgusted.

If you want a fair competition, then bring it on.

But please don't come here spilling your drivel and bullshit.

Pretending to be a gentleman.

Quit pretending!

Are you trying to cause trouble?

Are you crazy?!

Yes, I'm crazy!

Yes, I've lost my mind. I nearly handed Gan Jing over to you.

I know. I know it all, Jiang Haokun.

Look at you. You're just playing with people's emotions.

And of all people, you're lying to Gan Jing?

I was nearly fooled by you too.

I'm telling you!

I've never lied to Gan Jing.

I truly and genuinely love her.

Do you know how long it took her to recover after returning from America?!

Do you know that she spent three months in the hospital for depression?

I spent every day working in the hospital, to be with and watch over her!

She only got better later on.

You didn't know, did you?

I'm telling you,

the reason I can be with her today is because I earned it!

I waited ten years for her.

What a great speech.

I nearly believed you.

That girl almost jumped off a building to commit suicide because of you.

Suicide! She nearly died!

- Who?!- Don't you know?

Are you crazy?!

Okay, I won't keep shouting with you here, Jiang Haokun.

We'll leave things here for now.

Originally, I wanted to let Gan Jing stay like this.

I was going to stay out of it, because I've done her wrong,

and you would be a better home for her.

But now I've changed my mind.

I'm here today to tell you that I'm not leaving, I'm not returning to America.

I'm going to stay here, for Gan Jing.

Do you know why I'm staying?

To watch you, 24 hours a day.

Your'e done for.

- You're crazy.- Yes.

CEO Jiang, the client keeps calling.

The client's that way.Watch this guy.

No need.

If you have the capability, don't come back.

Hello?

Hello.

What is it?

Take me to the market.

How old are you? You can't go out on your own?

Bullshit. All my grandma's money is with you.

Hurry.

It's fine, nothing to do with you guys. Can I go now?

Move aside.

Can you hurry up? I have business to attend to.

Who are you trying to fool?

What kind of business could you have?

What are you doing?

I'll pick my things, you pick yours. Why are you touching my stuff?

I can't watch you wasting money.

Eating and drinking makes me happy. How is that a waste?

I don't understand you women.

You clearly know all this stuff is garbage.

After you eat it, you'll gain weight for sure.

After your weight goes up, you buy diet pills.

Isn't this just a loop of money-wasting?

In life, there is squandering.

Squandering means money.

The money your grandma gave you is our food money for the next week.

Is there enough for you to squander?

Then exchange this for one of my meals, okay?

Fine, then put the rest of it back.

You put it back. You're the one making a spectacle of yourself.

- Do you have a member's card?- No.
