things that, in a normal society,

Port Vell, Barcelona - one of the
most exclusive marinas in the world.

And today, it's one of the most
expensive places on the planet

to go shopping.

We have 30 superyachts, ranging from
30 metres to nearly 90 metres.

The average price here is, I think,
around 40 million.

There's about a billion pounds'
worth of boat on show.

And one of the highlights
is superyacht Solo.

Lena is just one of 18 crew.

She's on call 24/7

and knows all the secret extras
this luxury vessel has to offer.

Including six luxury guest suites -

one with a private deck
and Jacuzzi -

a fleet of £20,000 jet skis.

Even the fish on board
live in luxury.

That's three pools in total.

This 72-metre yacht is on the market
for £70 million.

That's almost £1 million per metre.

In charge of the Barcelona show
is Patrick Coote.

He's an insider to the world of
superyachts and their owners.

These are very, very unique,
special people.

There are about
5,000 superyachts worldwide -

therefore, about
5,000 superyacht owners.

Patrick knows that accessories
help make a yacht super.

A personal submarine
is a fun additional extra,

but could cost up to £40 million.

Once an owner takes delivery of
a vessel from the show,

it's almost inevitable
that they would want to

add their own customised elements.

For the billionaire owners,

anything is possible
on their floating mansions -

a personal balcony...

...a supersized sunroof...

...and for the fitness fanatics...

Gym, yeah.

Entertaining is key,

so you need to keep a priceless
wine collection safe, too.

If we did do
a transatlantic crossing,

then nothing would get destroyed.

What our superyacht owners like,
it's very, very difficult to define.

The clients who own these yachts
really tend to be much more low-key.

The super-rich can get a taste
for this luxury lifestyle.

The 73-metre Titania is for hire.

It's £600,000 for just a week.

This is the main salon.

Most evenings, we'll have the guests
gathering in this space

to enjoy a cocktail.

They'll often...can go outside,
sit outside.

And as the sun goes down, they can
enjoy a cocktail and canape.

It's quite lovely.

Captain jack can take you

to some of the most exotic locations
on the planet.

And you don't even need to climb
the stairs to take in the view.

You can see we've got an elevator,
which goes throughout the decks.

Just putting an elevator on board
a boat can cost a small fortune.

In fact, everything onboard
is bespoke.

There's a lot of fine
finish carpentry which...

...shows off the quality
of the build.

Some of the finish that you can see,
like the silver leafing

in the surrounds,
up in the ceiling.

The grand piano, which has
a self-playing option

so we can actually have that
playing music throughout the decks.

Grand pianos like this can cost
up to £100,000.

And outdoor entertainment is
covered with a personal water park.

A lot of our clients are
high-net-worth individuals,

into having a good time and,

you know, hosting big parties
on the boat.

All sorts of famous people
are coming on board

and it was pretty cool to see -

you know, just facilitating
a recreational activity.

A two-week break on this boat
cost £1.2 million.

Included in the price is anonymity.

Of course, we've signed
non-disclosure agreements,

so I can't divulge too much
about them.

So...don't ask.

The owner of the boat

is British multibillionaire founder
of Phones 4u, John Caudwell.

Steph, just for future knowledge,

never, ever should they be
this far apart, ever.

Doesn't matter how many people.
We sit together.

He's firm but fair.

It's always a pleasure to have him
on board.

So, we're just going to say
a few words.

You know, autism is a challenge.

We've helped 20,000 children
over the last 20 years.

John bought the superyacht
back in 2012

and bagged himself a bargain.

The main catalyst for this
was the fact that it was in auction.

I think it was about £35 million.

And the yacht, at the time, would've
been asking probably £60 million.

My wealth is such that
that is not a huge sum of money.

You know, I mean, people spend
£200 million on a superyacht.

Costs don't end there, though,
for superyacht owners.

The maintenance costs of running a
boat are millions of pounds a year.

Typically, it costs about 10%
of the value to run a yacht.

That could be £6 million a year
to keep Titania afloat.

And then, of course,
you've got 22 crew.

And you have to pay the crew
very well

because you've got to have the best
crew who give excellent service.

Superyacht luxury can range
from solid gold taps

to Michelin star cuisine.

Food is absolutely crucial.

My chef on board is
equally passionate.

Whatever they want to eat,
they can eat.

It's just a very, very privileged
and luxury lifestyle.

Coming up, an ex-stewardess
spills the beans

on what really happens at sea.

I thought I'd be straight in there,

pouring champagne for
Leonardo DiCaprio, and I wasn't.

I had no idea what I was
getting myself in for.

The secret world of superyachts

may be the preserve of
the privileged few.

The average price here is, I think,
around 40 million.

Competition is fierce
to have the biggest and the best.

People spend £200 million
on a superyacht.

My wealth is such that

Secretive billionaires
don't buy yachts ready-made.

They build bespoke boats
for themselves.

And designers in Britain lead the
world in giving them what they want.

This is a 75-metre that we're
looking at for our existing client,

as you know.

And it's working well for him.

But the pool is just worrying me
a little bit.

At the moment,
it's a very small pool

or it's a very big jacuzzi.

Delivering little details like that
has meant Mark Berryman's

designed some of the most expensive
private boats ever built.

Anything is possible
if you have two things -

and that's the time and the money.

In the superyacht world,

every metre of boat can cost
up to £2 million.

It's a lot of people who start
on a smaller-scale boat

but very, very quickly,
within a year,

all of a sudden, that could be
over 100 metres -

and so that side of things
can progress very, very quickly.

At 65 metres, Mark's latest
superyacht is longer than

an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Onto Life Saga now.

As you know, I went to see G
the other week.

Like many of Mark's clients,
the Russian oligarch

who Life Saga is being built for
has also paid for secrecy.

He's known only as Mr G.

The owner of Life Saga is
a client known to everybody as G,

and that's all I can tell you
about the man.

He wants the interior to flow
through to the exterior in areas,

and we have the bar area
with the teppanyaki...

A lot of our clients,
if I mentioned their names,

you'd go, "l have no idea
who he is" -

because this is not like your
pop stars or your football players.

This is... You know, we're going
higher and higher and higher,

from a sort of wealth point of view.

I've just got a feeling
he's going to love this.

Back in the south of France,

superyacht owner John Caudwell
is hard at work.

He's just finishing a publicity
shoot with his partner.

Have we had a kiss yet? No.
How about a little kiss? Come on!

Here we go. We're not all watching.

But ever the canny businessman,

this is one of the few yachts for
charter that turns a real profit.

What people always say

is there's only one way to make
a small fortune out of yachting -

and that is to start off
with a big fortune.

There's a hell of a lot of
one-upmanship

with superyacht owners.

I think there's a huge amount of ego
takes place

to have the biggest and the best.

You know, and a lot of
wealthy people

do like to show off the wealth.

My intention, right from
the beginning,

was to make this the most desirable
superyacht on the seas.

And I did that by
absolutely specialising

in the most friendly and effective
and efficient crew

and to have all the facilities.

So it was all these water toys,
which people have great fun on.

We just built the largest slide
on any superyacht in the world,

which is around the side there.

And we've got everything
from sailing boats to jet skis,

jet bikes, surfboards.

The sort of clientele on this boat
are going to be...

Of course, first of all,
they're super wealthy,

because the boat charters
at 650,000 euros per week,

and then that's plus extras -
you know, the food, drink and fuel.

Most people would probably live
quite a hedonistic life

on the yacht.

It's every bit as ostentatious

and spoiled as anybody
could ever imagine.

In Tuscany,

hidden behind the walls of
this ultra exclusive yacht builders

is where Mr G's multi-million-pound
boat is being built.

When superyachts as long as
Premier League football pitches

can cost £200 million to build,
this one's not going to be cheap.

The world of the superyachts
is so exclusive,

so the people who come here
is used to living the top.

So, we try to give to our clients
a complete experience.

Pampering the super-rich is not
restricted to life on board.

And the task of yacht building
is made as comfortable as possible.

We have a restaurant
that is also our club,

where you can spend your night.

We have a Michelin-starred chef.

There is also a gym and a full spa,
with a pool, with a steam sauna.

The expectations are really high.

Client luxury sits side-by-side
with the actual business

of building the boats.

You don't want to...only to sell
yachts but sell a lifestyle.

In fact, we are not only
a factory building yachts

but we're also like
a boutique shipyard.

Jean Margaux is one of the few
people trusted to meet Mr G,

and that means he knows

He asks for a very masculine boat,

with size but also elegant

The gym, the beach club...

The budget for this superyacht
is, of course, undisclosed -

and building boats as big as this
can take five years.

But at the end...

...she's done.

There are almost 200 superyachts
on the planet

over 70 metres in length.

And with that much wealth on show,

they can be a very dangerous place
to be.

For the last ten years or so, piracy
has been quite a major problem

for the whole maritime industry.

Keeping this darker side of yachting
under wraps

are people like ex-Marine sniper
Ed Hill.

He can keep superyachts
and those on board safe.

Depending on where you are,
in certain parts of the world,

the pirates usually have
a different modus operandi.

Somali pirates take control of the
ship and take you back to Somalia,

hold the ship and the crew
for ransom.

They are generally armed with
AK-47 assault rifles, RPGs.

Other parts of the world,
such as Southeast Asia,

they're a little bit more violent,

a little bit more
kind of smash-and-grab.

Superyacht owners are spending
hundreds of thousands of pounds

a year protecting
their floating palaces.

When it comes to cost,
it's never an open cheque book,

but it can be substantial sometimes.

It all depends on how far
that individual

takes his security seriously.

While the cost of keeping a
superyacht safe can be high,

billionaires really blow
the budget on having fun.

Brooke was a chief stewardess
on superyachts

and has seen some spectacular
shopping lists.

Brooke has had to cater to some
of the most demanding guests

on the planet.

Superyacht guests like this
can spend in a week

what it would take an average
British family 400 years

to spend on their groceries.

To be a successful crew member,
there's one skill that's essential.

Keeping secrets.

Back in Hampshire, Mark Berryman
is concerned about the safety

of his super rich Russian client.

He's a very private man and he
wants to, sort of, keep it that way.

Of course. Yeah, of course.

Security expert Ed Hill
has been drafted in

to find out how to keep Mr G
safe on board his boat.

My immediate thoughts are
fitting of sensors.

In addition to that, there's CCTV
and having the CCTV monitored.

Something that I've not looked at
an awful lot in the past

is the whole, sort of, piracy issue.

You know, you see stuff on the news

and in the media these days
about Somalia and...

Where do we stand
with firearms on board?

The yacht's primary function is
to be a pleasure craft. Of course.

We're not coming on board
to turn it into a warship.

We can be armed.

I've got 38 people on our books

and all those are ex-British
military guys... Right.

"Royal Marines,
ex-Special Forces guys.

We're not there to kill anyone.
Yeah, sure.

Warning shots is usually enough.
Yeah.

If you've got a boat
that's worth over £100 million,

you've got the lives of the crew.

I've known owners who'll pay
more for a bottle of wine

than what they will
for their security,

so it all depends on, are you
prepared to take that chance?

The whole design team
are embracing client safety.

If you're not on board,

what can the crew...
..do? Because...

LRAD. Long Range...
Long Range Acoustic Device.

It was initially designed as
a form of non-lethal riot control.

I can show you. OK.
Have you got one here? Yeah.

Oh, really? Yeah. So we can have a
look at it now? Yeah. Oh, fantastic.

OK. Brilliant.

Just one LRAD could cost
over £150,000,

but an arsenal
of non-lethal weaponry

would give any superyacht owner
great bragging rights.

I'm intrigued. I have no idea
what the LRAD system looks like.

Is this something that could be
integrated again into the exterior?

Do you need special training
to set one of these up?

Erm, I've never had
any special training.

Clients don't want to be reminded
that, you know,

their boat is geared up
as a sort of safe haven,

so, you know, if we can do
it subtly, it'll be good.

Oh, wow.

OK. If I just get you to stand
in this area. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I'll switch it on and just give you
a demonstration on how it works.

I'm going to do it
in a very, very low volume

because I'm aware of people
over there

and I don't want to start
causing irreparable damage

or deafness or stuff like that.

So, in the event that we should get
an approach from a hostile craft,

OK, we would just go
straight to the alarm.

ALARM

OK. And that's the sound
that it generates.

Even at that level, you can feel
it's uncomfortable. Yeah, of course.

Yeah, of course.

No, not yet.
I hope I never have to, but...

I've heard it's very uncomfortable.
Can we try?

I wouldn't be comfortable
doing that in this environment.

Just thinking about control and
safety and all that kind of stuff.

The designers will have to decide
whether mega-millionaire Mr G

gets an LRAD soon.

of yacht brokers in this town

who aim to give billionaires

on a sale of a multi-million pound

David is infamous for pushing the
boat out with his sales technique.

Across town, the broker looking
after Mr G's new superyacht,

Life Saga, is checking out
the latest designs

for the boat's interior.

I've known the owner and captain
Chris for a long time now

and we got to talking about
doing a new construction.

Alex Banning has been the central
contact for the project.

and the mixture was
heavy on the milk.

Yeah.

Building a superyacht is basically
like building a small town.

For example, Life Saga probably
employed easily 35,000 people.

Building huge superyachts
can be a risky business.

If you get it wrong,

you've wasted years, money,

and you're going to end up
in court as well.

All the more reason
to deliver the boat in time

for this year's Monaco Yacht Show.

The stakes may be high,
but the rewards can be too.

We like our clients to know
that we understand both them

and stuff they like.

If you don't go and stay
in a nice hotel,

how are you going to sell
a nice yacht?

So mix it up, have some fun.

YouTubing yacht broker David Seal
is also looking to boost business,

so he's shooting his latest video.

Yeah.

It's OK, actually.

It's OK.

While those viewers who are in
a position to actually buy a yacht

may be limited, David's popularity
is certainly growing.

He's already superstar.

Brokers like David may be happy
with the attention

a superyacht brings,
but most on board aren't.

Privacy is paramount to
a lot of these people.

They can sail off into the middle
of the sea

and no-one knows what they're doing.
They could be doing anything.

Drug parties, prostitutes on board,
whatever they want.

George Bamby, otherwise known
as Britain's number one paparazzi,

makes serious money
shooting the rich and famous

on board their superyachts.

My job entails
following celebrities,

finding out where they are,
stalking them, spying on them.

Basically, I considered myself,
like, as a celebrity policeman.

If there's a celebrity
or a well-known person there

and they're doing something wrong,
I'm the one that punishes them,

through my camera.

If you buy a yacht for £100 million
or £50 million,

I don't care what anyone says,
you're showing off, aren't you?

There's a massive market for
pictures with people on superyachts

because they're very hard
pictures to get.

With some photos selling to
the press for five figure sums,

George will get the shot
one way or another.

It's like a massive game
of cat and mouse.

The chase is the best part.
I love that bit.

I was in Portugal
on this private resort.

Vale do Lobo, I think it's called.
There's actually armed police.

You're not allowed to take any
pictures. No cameras on the beach.

So basically, I went down
the night before

about three o'clock in the morning
with a spade, dug a big hole

in the sand, buried my camera
in a carrier bag,

put it in the sand
and put a sun bed over it.

And then the next morning I went
down with just, like, you know,

my swimming shorts on,
got on my sun bed,

they're looking at me thinking,
"He's all right. Nothing on him."

Next thing, I've turned around,
got my camera,

gone down in the water
and gone, "Drrrrr, drrrr",

shot all these pictures,
shot loads of them.

Next day, I've got page three
of every single paper in England.

Sun, Star, Mirror, Mail, Express.

Happy days.

With the Monaco Yacht Show
fast approaching,

Mark Berryman is working on
the finishing touches

for his client Mr G's
new superyacht.

OK. Yeah.

He loves his burnt orange.

Burnt orange is one of his
favourite colours...

...so I think this is great.

It's not overdoing it too much.

He has very strong ideas
on what he likes

and what he doesn't like.

I'm sure if you went and sat and had
a drink with him in a pub at night,

the last thing he's going to
be talking about is fabrics,

but it's important to him and
I think past experience gives him

the knowledge to be able to
tell us what he's looking for.

He wants it and, at the end of
the day, client is always right.

From moulded glass
handmade in Ireland

to Hermes fabric from Paris,

the custom-made furniture
is arriving too.

It's an expensive piece.

Can you say how expensive?

The boat-builders in Italy
are nearly finished as well.

And no superyacht would be complete
without a sprinkling of artwork.

OK.

This just ties in with
the ochres and the burnt orange.

That colour palette really
lends itself beautifully.

Price-wise, it's under £450,
which is absolutely nothing,

and, you know, that's something that
can literally be chucked overboard

and a new piece put in its place.

Mark has dealt with less disposable
artwork in the past though.

I was walking around with a very
nice, sort of, gilt-framed sketch

and the captain came up to me
and said,

"Mark, ooh, just watch what
you're doing with that one.

"It's quite an important piece,
that."

It was a Picasso sketch.
Right, put that next to the...

You can deal with that.
I'm not going anywhere near it.

Mr G's new superyacht has been
almost five years in the making.

For those who can't wait that long,
they could buy this one.

The most beautiful boats you
generally find in the industry

are going to be Italian designed.

You just have to look at the outside
and you just get the wow factor.

Generally speaking, Italian
designers will make the boat

look sleek, make it look
fashionable and timeless.

Meet the man in charge of keeping

this triple-decked superyacht
shipshape.

My name's Daniel Murphy
and I'm the chief engineer.

We are quite lucky to be
on board a fantastic

custom-built Italian yacht.

And everything you see inside
here is completely custom

and selected by hand.

Which means it's essential
Danny takes good care of it.

It has got its hard days
and its easy days,

like any other normaljob
in the world.

You generally just walk around
everything, checking everything.

We check the sewage. You definitely
don't want to put that on TV.

The only difference is, my house
moves, my postcode changes daily.

Superyachts like this
need an army of full-time staff

delivering the luxury service,

and one of the most important
members of crew is the chef.

I always wanted to be a chef
since I was 12 years old.

I heard about yachts and I thought,

well, that would be quite a nice way
to travel and do something I love.

Bianca has been working on
superyachts for ten years

and is responsible for feeding
everybody onboard.

We could have a total of nine crew
on this boat,

up to 12 guests to feed at one time,

which should equal to 21 people
in total per day.

The crew do help me out
with some dishwashing,

which I very much appreciate,

but other than that,
it's all me that has to cook

absolutely everything

and everything I make
from pretty much scratch.

I've had some very, very,
very demanding guests.

Sometimes unreasonably so.

They'll call you at 3:00am
in the morning or something

and be like,
"Can I get a cheeseburger?"

Even though I'm working
18 hours every day

and it's the mental exhaustion
of always anticipating.

You've got to always anticipate
what's next.

What are they going to ask for?
What might they want?

I basically live by one expression

and that is you're only as good
as your last meal.

If your previous meal isn't good,
you could be fired.

And for the staff onboard
these multi-million pound yachts,

the accommodation isn't quite
as spacious as the guests'.

Bianca's my wife.

We've been married for three years
and working together for nearly six.

I met Bianca on a yacht.

I saw her and I just
kept pestering her

until she would go out on a date
with me and eventually she said yes.

Pros, you get your own
personal space, your own cabin.

Cons, you are unfortunately
sleeping in a bunk bed.

As a married couple, it's not ideal.

When we have guests on,

I only really see Danny when
he comes to wash my dishes.

He's good like that.

Well trained.

Hierarchy is essential to
the smooth running of a superyacht.

So, there is a technical seniority
with a ranking system on board

because ships do work with ranks.

Do you out rank her? Yes.

But please don't put that
on public television.

Who's the boss?

Who do you think?
Who do you think is the boss?

I think I'm the boss. Mm-hm.
Am I the boss?

I don't know. You tell me.
I'll do as I'm told.

is finally unveiled.

We've got a bit of stress
because the boss man is coming.

But he's got some last-minute
requests

ahead of the Monaco Yacht Show.

Russian millionaire Mr G's
new superyacht

has faced some challenges in its
journey from design to completion.

I think it'll work.

He wants it and, at the end of
the day, client is always right.

But in Tuscany,
after five years of work,

it's finally time to launch this
brand-new 65-metre superyacht.

You have this perfect day for it.

It's been built in a huge hangar
in the boat yard

and, overnight, the yacht has been
moved onto a submersible barge

to be lowered into the ocean.

Look at that.
It is.

It's one of the main
features of the boat.

With the waiting crowd gathered,
and in time-honoured fashion,

the hull of the ship
is christened with champagne.

And after five years,

this time-honoured tradition
has to wait just a few moments more.

CHEERING

Now everyone has to hold their
breath and hope the boat floats.

It's all as per the drawings,
basically, I'm happy to say.

Hopefully, the boss will be
extremely happy as well.

With Life Saga afloat,
designer Mark is straight on board

to see if he can accommodate
a last-minute request from Mr G.

All superyachts need hours
of daily cleaning

to preserve them
from the salty environment

and captain Chris can see a problem.

This is obviously one of the main
features of this boat.

It's the full-height glass windows.

Not the easiest place to clean,

but, as captain,
that's not my job, luckily.

We need to employ people
with circus backgrounds.

Well, they'll be perfect
for the feature

that's been installed
on the top deck.

Is this one of your features?

Did you pick the place?

Mr G was less sure about
some of the furniture though.

OK, here we have
our Fletcher Capstan table.

It took me a year to persuade
the boss to buy it, but...

...you can then open her up

and, hey presto, 12 guests.

So why did the boss take so much
persuading for this one?

If I told you how much it cost,
you'd understand.

Tables like these can cost
over £100,000.

In Monaco, it's show time.

Superyachts from around the world
have gathered in the south of France

to be sold, chartered
or simply to be seen.

The whole of the yachting world
have gathered in the south of France

to show off some of the most
expensive private boats

on the planet.

And everything a billionaire
could wish for can be bought.

A new twin-turbine chopper.

Or maybe a custom submersible
if you don't like heights.

And this year, the most expensive
charter yacht on the planet

has made its debut.

Flying Fox, believed to cost
£1.8 million per week.

Also making its debut in Monaco,
Mr G's brand-new Life Saga.

Coming to Monaco, it gets the boat
into the eyes of the yachting world.

It's definitely worth coming
for all concerned, I think.

Industry insiders
from the superyacht world

have been clamouring
to get on board.

There have been quite a few
brokers and potential buyers.

Not too crazy but busy enough.

Captain Chris is now in charge
of 1,200 tonnes of superyacht

and 16 full-time crew.

Cover that.

All here to cater to the needs
of 12 lucky guests,

including Mr G.

I'm very happy.
The owner is very happy.

He came on at the last minute
with a big grin on his face,

taking photos,
which is always a good sign.

The boat's got, certainly,
it's got five years of my life

invested into it and the last
six months has been a bit of a blur

as we've put what's basically
a floating village together

and finding the crew.

But it's all come together
and I can't really believe

it's happening, to be honest.
It's fantastic.

Yacht broker David
has got a new boat too.

I will... I will...

He's just chartered this one though

to shoot his newest video blog
from the Yacht Show,

but things aren't going smoothly.

And David's making a beeline

to film the biggest boats
at the Monaco show.

Interior designer Mark Berryman
has also travelled out

to take a look.

Yeah, yeah. OK.
