Original subtitles

(eerie ambient music)

(light breathing)

(eerie ambient music)

- [Viktor] Ragmork.

That was what I called it.

The presence I could only feel in the dead of night.

This thing followed my every move.

It started when Lisa died,

became full throttle when I moved in with my grandparents.

My grandpa assured me it wasn't real,

but nothing could convince me otherwise.

(eerie ambient music)

(screaming)

(eerie ambient music)

- I didn't know you were here.

Get out!

Get out!

(heavy rock music)

(eerie ambient music)

(light synth music)

(knobs squeaking)

(pump squeaking)

(gun firing)

- [Viktor] I don't want to survive.

I've struggled long enough.

For once I'll have to just

submit myself and forsake everything I built.

Erase the slate and start from scratch.

I want to simply live.

- [Regina] It's not too late to start over.

- I don't want to die.

Not anymore.

- This is your life now.

Get out and see new places.

Change of scenery would do you well.

(heavy rock music)

(vocalizing)

(eerie ambient music)

(animal howling)

- [Viktor] Hey Walt?

- Who wants to know?

Viktor?

That you?

Grab yourself a beer.

What kind do you like?

- Oh, porters, IPA, and all that good stuff.

- You like 'em all then. - Yeah.

You know, as long as it's not pisswater

for frat boys and lightweights,

I'm good with it.

(speaking foreign language)

- [Walt] So you haven't come around

in a few years?

- Well, without the family functions

and my grandfather's garage sales,

I don't really see much reason for me to do that.

- Yeah, I miss seeing your grandpa now and again,

and the rest of your family too.

- They were always great,

but pretty much strangers to me now.

- I'm glad to see you here.

Didn't expect to find you out here.

- Yeah.

Just, just had to get away.

- This a good place to do it.

No neighbors, except me, of course.

So, how's your workplace feel about that?

- I don't think they really give a shit.

I mean, I just walked out of there.

They probably fired me,

but some dumbfuck's probably got my desk now anyway.

Besides I'm not really concerned about the money.

I always manage.

- So you moving somewhere?

- I'm crashing at the family place,

but I really don't know what I'm doing.

- Well, if you burnout, I'm here to listen.

- I appreciate that.

You know, it's, just feel strung out and

lost.

- Sounds like getting away is a good idea.

Yeah, we all get lost.

Especially when we're young.

Some of us never find our way back

and we get lost again after we have found it.

Look, I'd tell you things get easier,

but I won't bullshit you.

(chuckling)

I'm not stupid enough to think that things work the same way

for your generation that they did for mine.

I can only imagine what it's like to be young anymore.

- Yeah, just flip on the news and open up the internet

and you'll see all the bullshit.

- I spend time doing that,

I'd ruin my whole day.

- You let other people's problems bother you?

- Nah, it's not that I let it.

No, it's just, I get upset by injustice and cruelty.

I got no solutions for either one,

but I hate to see the world crumble in on itself.

I'm only thankful that I won't be around for most of it.

Don't let my bitchin' get you down, all right?

There, there's still good in this world.

- I know there is.

Just have a hard time finding it,

especially when everybody's at each other's throat.

- Yeah.

Seems like these days everything's one way or the other.

You've got the moral police and the instigators.

- Fucktards and trolls.

- Can't have one without the other.

- Hmm.

- So, where do we belong, guys like us?

(eerie ambient music) (whistling)

- Get out!

You won't understand Just get out!

- [Viktor] How far back can you remember?

- Six, I think.

I remember going to the park with my grandma,

starting school, going to the movies with my parents,

things like that.

- [Viktor's Mother] Good morning.

It's your third birthday.

Come on, let's go. Come on, let's get up.

- [Viktor] That's the earliest memory I have a timestamp on.

And one of the last memories of my mother

before she ran off.

Most of my memories from that time are all a blur now,

but I can still see my sister.

- [Regina] Lisa?

The one who died?

- I can still see her face sometimes.

As every year passes, her face vanishes ever more.

She was my first experience with death, at the age of four.

My father, a couple of years later,

that's how I met death firsthand.

My last memory of him, I can see it vividly,

but I could never understand it.

He went to the hospital shortly after that,

died from a sudden illness.

At least that's what my grandparents told me

when they took me in.

I never learned more, but I was very young.

It kills me.

- Talking about your father?

- No.

You're one of the only people can connect with.

I can't stand to think we'll live our lives apart.

And never truly meet each other.

(eerie ambient music)

(animal howling)

(audience applauding)

- Welcome back, everybody.

Our next guest is one of the most beautiful television

personalities Dayton ever saw.

And she's here with us,

not you, Gary.

(laughing)

Jeez.

We asked for toilet paper and he rolled in.

(knocking on desk)

Of all the manholes in town, you had to drop in here?

(knocking on desk)

Put a rubber band around your head and snap out of it.

You haven't done that lately,

but your face was really clear.

- [Woman] Goodness. - [Host] Waited so long for this.

(woman laughing)

- [Woman] This is a really long hug.

- [Woman] Wow, okay, okay, all right.

- [Host] Take me away from all this.

- So what's this with beer cans?

(man laughing)

This guy gets it.

(laughing)

More like beer can'ts.

(audience laughing)

Am I right?

And what's this with sharks?

Why not just call 'em fish with teeth?

(audience laughing)

- Lisa.

She's in there.

I don't know how.

She's not like you remember her.

You can go see if here if you want to.

You have to do it alone.

I can't.

I don't got it in me.

(Lisa humming)

- [Man] Viktor.

Viktor, Viktor.

Viktor, Viktor.

Viktor!

(banging on door)

(knocking on door)

(door creaking)

(eerie ambient music)

(chimes ringing)

(eerie ambient music)

- That's right.

I've read every single one.

Of course I like to catch up

to "Blood Meridian" at least once a year.

Ah, without Elsa I haven't had much else to do

these last five years.

- You must miss her a lot.

- Every single day.

For a few months I was pretty damn sure I died.

Now I realize there's a part of me that'll never come back.

That's life. Am I right?

Yeah, we moved here in '87.

Before that, the city always seemed like such a cool place.

After four years, and

night after night of being at each other's throats,

we couldn't wait to get the fuck out of that shithole.

So we looked to a nice secluded place

and found ourselves here,

fell in love with it quick.

Much as I love it here,

I just missed the opportunity for change, that's all.

You know what I mean?

Anymore, I follow the same routine every day.

Very little comes my way to pull me out of it.

You know, even though Elsa and I

both enjoyed our solitude,

she was always good at finding something new,

no matter where we were.

- Do you have any kids?

- Never.

I can't stand anybody's cunt-droppings.

(laughing)

I'm just fucking with you, okay?

The kids never happened for us.

Yeah, we were fine with it.

Neither of us needed company when we had each other.

Yeah, I've been rambling again.

You don't say much.

- Just better at listening.

- You know, it's, it's rare

to find somebody who will listen.

You know, somebody who won't have to

get their own little stupid point in

before you finally get around to yours.

Reminds me of that quote.

"It's always interesting to talk to an intelligent man."

- Yeah.

"Brothers Karamazov."

- You read it?

- Of course.

- But that said,

I hardly ever find an intelligent person.

- You ever try looking for one?

- Not in a long time.

(eerie ambient music)

(eerie ambient music)

- [Viktor] You ever see anything like this out here?

- Not in my 30 years here.

- I have no clue how this got here.

You, you watch the news recently?

See any strange disappearances or sightings

or anything like that?

- No.

- While I was at the house last night,

I could have swore I felt somebody watching me.

I don't know who, I don't know what.

I just felt eyes on me.

I just...

Do you ever feel anything like that out here?

- No, not even once.

(eerie ambient music)

There something you want to tell me?

- [Viktor] What do you mean?

- [Walt] You have that look.

- Just,

I just hope there's nothing dangerous out here.

I feel like there's eyes on me every minute.

I just don't know.

Just don't know where they're coming from.

- Isolation can get to you.

It's not for everybody.

But, look this place, though, it's safe.

There's no crime here.

But what we saw in your yard,

it's gotta be one of the weirdest things I've ever seen

in my life.

Look, if you see anybody,

if you even think you see 'em,

give me a call, okay? - [Viktor] All right.

- I'll come out and help.

- Schubert, and all the rest of them,

the whole Strauss family.

So those are the Germans.

Then you get to the Russians.

Mussgorsky and Rachmaninoff,

and Rimsky-Korsakov.

And then some Italians.

That's mostly opera down in Italy.

Rossini and Verdi.

And then not so much in France and England.

(voice distorting) (eerie ambient music)

- [Viktor] I don't want to be alone anymore.

Please come back to me.

(phone buzzing)

- [Dragan] Hello, Viktor.

My name is Dragan.

I'm Regina's brother.

I've been making lots of calls,

and see you were trying to get in touch with her,

so I figured I should let you know too.

Regina died.

She had been missing for a few weeks, and

we found her yesterday.

Still don't have many details at this time.

As soon as we know more, we'll let you know too.

We'll keep in touch.

(dramatic string music)

(eerie ambient music)

- [Regina] Hey, there.

I miss talking to you.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Message me when you get settled.

But I have no choice.

I must be ready.

Though we never met.

Even if everything we had was just a hopeful fantasy,

I loved every second of it.

It always felt like you were there with me.
