Where are the cupcakes?

The cupcakes aren't out yet!

Where do you want the champagne, honey?

How about over there? Thanks, Mom.

Got the cupcakes!

Fabulous! Let me see...

Actually...

There, perfect.

Better.

Sorry...

It's a good thing you caught that,

otherwise the party would have been ruined.

Relax honey, it's going to be great!

I just want everything to be perfect, mom.

There's a reporter coming!

She's right.

We need to put our best foot forward.

We're announcing the launch of our wedding cakes today.

I still can't believe you got her to do weddings, Howard.

I'm not quite sure how that happened, either.

Weddings are big business!

We've gotta give them what they want.

That's why I hired him.

Okay...

It's the 65th anniversary of Providence's own

Miriam's Sweet Treats bakery,

and I'm here with owner and head baker, Jessie Dale.

So Jessie, you inherited the shop

from your grandmother, Miriam, is that right?

I did, about five years ago.

She taught me everything I know.

Sounds like a very special lady.

She was my best friend.

Do you want to give us a tour?

Sure, follow me.

So this is my grandmother teaching me how to bake.

Grandma's apron.

And that's a photo from opening day, 1955,

when grandma opened Miriam's Sweet Treats.

She was about the same age as me there.

Oh, and that's the very first bowl and spoon

my grandmother ever used,

which she inherited from her grandmother, Florrie!

Baking runs in the family, it seems.

Do you have any plans on changing the bakery,

now that it's yours?

No.

Our history is very much a part of our story,

and we're proud of the fact that our bakery

has remained unchanged for 65 years.

Of course, we're always looking for ways to expand.

Have you told them about the wedding cakes?

Thank you, Howard.

Yes, actually.

Due to popular demand,

we now do custom wedding cakes!

Available for pre-order now!

Shall we do a taste test?

Yes, let's do a taste test.

Mmm!

This is amazing.

It's really good.

Miriam's Sweet Treats, everybody.

The best little bakery in Rhode Island.

Sam, you've gotta try this.

It's so good.

I don't think there's a single slice of cake left

in this entire place.

Now that's the sign of a good party.

(phone beeps)

We've already had a ton of wedding inquiries.

And the segment doesn't even air until tomorrow.

You guys should go home.

I'll clean up.

You sure?

Don't have to ask me twice.

Good night!

I'm sure. Thanks, Howard.

I'll see you tomorrow.

Okay.

Mom, you've done so much. Go home.

Your grandmother would be so proud of you.

Really.

Thanks, Mom.

I really wish she would have been here.

Me too.

There.

What do you think?

It's nice!

You hate it.

I don't hate it!

I know what "it's nice" means.

It means you hate it.

I don't hate it.

I would just...

Like that.

I don't see a difference!

Am I going insane?

Am I living in the sim?

What did you even do?

Good morning!

Morning, Howard.

You're in a good mood!

You're about to be, too.

I just landed us the biggest opportunity

this bakery's ever had.

Oh no, what did you do?

Belson's wants to carry your cakes in their stores.

Belson's, like the grocery chain?

That's the one.

What? No, absolutely not.

Are you crazy?

Jessie, this is huge...

And corporate.

And impersonal.

My grandmother would never have gone for this.

We make our cakes fresh.

We're not an assembly line.

They would still be fresh!

We would set our own terms.

No...

Sorry, Howard.

We need this, Jessie.

We'll find another way.

Why did you hire me?

To take over the books from Mom,

and to help us find ways to keep this place...

Afloat?

Afloat.

Look, it's not 1955 anymore.

Rent is increasing every year.

The cost of living is going up.

Our suppliers keep raising their prices.

If you can't find a way to keep up,

you won't have a bakery at all.

I know...

I know!

You're right.

But Belson's would be a huge change,

and I just don't want this place to turn into something it's not.

I already agreed to do wedding cakes.

Can we just see how that goes first?

Fine.

But this deal won't be on the table forever.

I know.

The segment's on!

I'm here with owner and head baker, Jessie Dale.

So Jessie, you inherited the shop

from your grandmother, Miriam, is that right?

I did, about five years ago.

She taught me everything I kno.

Sounds like a very special lady.

She was my best friend.

Do you want to give us a tour?

Sure.

I don't care that the designs

have been through production already,

I don't want them in my new line.

We'll unload them at a sample sale.

Yes, thank you darling.

I'll be in later today.

[TV on in background]

Miriam's Sweet Treats, everybody.

The best little bakery in Rhode Island.

Hmm, Miriam's Sweet Treats?

(phone dialling)

Okay, sounds great.

Thank you so much, we'll see you soon.

You guys will never guess who that was.

Who?

Suzanne Cooper.

The fashion designer?

[Howard] Are you kidding me?

She's like, the most famous person in Rhode Island!

She wants us to do her wedding cake.

Are you serious?

Oh my gosh, I love her clothes.

Oh my gosh!

-This is incredible. -I know!

This could open us up to a whole new world of elite clients!

Maybe she'll give us an in-store discount!

I don't know, what if she's snobby?

Or demanding?

Oh, she will be.

For sure, no doubt.

But this is excellent news.

This is excellent news!

When is she coming in?

Now-ish...

Now-ish?

Tell me why I'm here again?

Evan can't make it.

And I need a male perspective.

A male perspective on cake?

Exactly.

Well, is my male perspective actually going to influence

your decision in any way?

Probably not.

Good.

I'm glad that's clear.

I love cake!

Cake, cake, cake!

I love cake too, Riley.

And I love your enthusiasm!

You know, you could learn a thing or two from her.

She's here!

Does everything look okay?

How does everything look?

-Do I look okay? -Would you guys relax?

She's just a person!

She's not a person, she's an angel.

An icon!

With the ability to put us in the national spotlight.

Yeah, so don't mess this up.

Mess up and we're done.

No pressure.

Thank you...

Welcome to Miriam's Sweet Treats.

How can I help you today?

I'm Suzanne Cooper, we spoke on the phone.

Oh yes of course, so nice to meet you.

And you must be Evan.

Congratulations on your big day.

Actually I'm Aidan, the brother.

Oh.

Well, welcome.

Evan's in surgery today.

And pretty much every day.

And who is this little cutie?

This is our official cake tester.

She's an expert.

Oh, really?

Riley, my daughter.

Nice to meet you, Riley.

Would you like a tour of the kitchen?

Okay.

Beatrice, do you mind?

Are you sure you don't need my help out here?

I'm sure, thank you.

Well there you go!

Don't break anything.

So, shall we eat some cake?

Why yes, that's what we're here for.

Hi.

This is delicious.

I might have to get married again just to hire you.

Luckily I'm a firm believer

that any occasion is an occasion for cake.

Well...

I love all of them.

You're hired.

You are so hired.

Excellent!

I will draw up the paperwork!

Thank you! I so look forward to working with you.

I do too.

Dad, look what I got!

Can I take it home?

I think you've got to leave that here.

Dad...

Sorry, sweetie.

You can try some cake, though.

Ooh, chocolate.

Okay, coming in...

Yum, can you get some chocolate, Aunt Suzanne?

I love four berry, sorry Riley.

But chocolate is my favorite.

I know, kiddo.

You can have a chocolate cake at your wedding.

Sorry, bride's choice.

Okay...

You know what, Riley?

Why don't you keep that rolling pin?

We have plenty.

Really?

Here you go.

Thank you...

You don't have to give it to her.

It's fine.

You should keep it.

I can tell there's an inner baker in there.

Please, Dad?

Okay.

What do we say?

Thank you!

Thank you, seriously.

It's no problem.

Well, we should really get going.

Jessie, why don't you come to my house this week

and you can look at my wedding plans?

You can see the look I'm going for.

Get a little inspiration.

Sounds perfect.

Tomorrow? Noon?

I'll send you the address.

I look forward to it.

And I look forward to working with you.

Me too.

Thanks, Jessie!

You're welcome, Riley!

It was nice to meet you.

You too.

All right, come on you little munchkin!

Here we go.

Are we going to the thrift store?

(laughing)

-Thanks again. -Bye.

Come on you, let's go do some rolling.

Well, looks like we're doing our first wedding cake.

She was incredible...

I'm going to go write a press release.

What?

Where are you even going to release that?

How about that brother?

Aidan?

He's married.

That's not what Riley said.

Really?

What'd she say?

Not much, but Aidan is a single dad.

His sister is my client.

Besides, I am not looking at dating right now.

Okay, do you mind if I date him?

Umm, sure.

I guess, I mean...

Gotcha!

You know you want to.

Anyway, I'm going to go for dinner.

Want to grab a bite?

Nah, thanks. I'm gonna stick around here.

Deep clean the mixers.

You did that yesterday.

I did?

Well, they can never be too clean!

You work too much, Jess.

But I respect that about you.

I, on the other hand,

plan on taking full advantage of my night off.

Enjoy it! I'm rooting for you!

Hello!

Please...

Wow.

Isn't it fabulous?

This way...

Wow, this certainly gives me a lot of inspiration.

I know, isn't it amazing?

Definitely gives me a lot to work with.

Okay wow, Suzanne...

You look amazing!

Thank you!

Stop!

Oh, no thank you.

I'm sorry, are you having a party?

I can come back another time.

Oh no, of course not.

I just really wanted you to get a feel

for what the wedding will be like.

Okay, well I'm definitely getting a feel for it.

Now, you'll just have to imagine the poppies.

They're being imported from Oregon.

They're beautiful.

Oh, no thank you.

Well...

Yeah.

Okay, wow... they're amazing.

Right?

Another?

Should we get started?

Please!

So, how was preschool today?

It was good.

Where are we going?

You love Aunt Suzanne's.

Why can't you stay with me?

I'm sorry Riley, but I've got to go back to work.

It's just for a couple of hours, okay?

Okay.

Come on...

There we go, big jump...

Woo!

I really love this one.

Wonderful work so far.

Thank you!

I'll include your feedback

and incorporate your inspiration in the next design.

Do you mind if I take some photos while I'm here?

By all means.

and it was really special for me.

I'd love to pass that along.

Why don't you guys stop by after your meeting?

The bakery will be mostly empty by then

and we'll have plenty of time.

Unless you already have plans?

No, it's a date.

Umm...

I mean, you know what I mean.

I do.

Well, I should get going.

Make sure the bakery isn't falling apart without me.

I'll see you later.

And I'll send over the new designs when they're ready.

Sure.

Sorry. (giggling)

What?

Oh, please.

Go to your meeting.

Okay. Bye you!

What's up?

I just got a letter from the owner of our building.

We could be forced out the second the deal closes.

What?

They can't do that.

It's just... stuff with the bakery.

Well, why don't you talk to me about it?

I do know a thing or two about business, you know.

Okay, well, it's just...

Okay, so what are your options?

We can't afford to buy it, so...

Find some place else, or...

Or close.

Close?

Do you no longer want to run the bakery?

No, of course I do.

Then why would you close it down?

Because it won't be the same!

That's it?

You can't let that paralyze you.

I heard about the offer.

I'm sorry, honey.

I just can't believe it.

It's not the end of the world.

You can get this place back on its feet.

You're not disappointed in me?

This was your mom's bakery.

And I lost it.

I could never be disappointed in you.

I know how much you love the bakery.

But I lost it.

Grandma loved this place.

Oh, honey...

Don't you know that grandma didn't love the bakery?

She loved baking.

Bringing people together,

spending time with her granddaughter.

The place the baking happens doesn't matter,

it's the baking itself.

It's the love that goes into it

and the people you bake with that matter.

Your passion for baking will always connect you

to your grandma.

I know.

Thanks, Mom.

I want to show you another picture.

Mom I've seen all of these, they're from when I was little.

No, I don't think this one you have.

Take a closer look...

Wait, what is this?

This is opening day of the bakery in 1940.

Miriam's Sweet Treats opened in 1955,

when grandma was in her twenties.

She's what, like 10 here?

And why does the building look so different?

It's not Miriam's Sweet Treats.

It's the original bakery your great grandma opened.

Florrie's Bake Shop, it was across town.

Florrie's Bake Shop?

Grandma never mentioned that, how did I not know that?

Florrie was the first person in our family

to open a bakery.

It was World War II, and...

the economy wasn't that great, but...

She was adored in her neighborhood,

so she managed okay.

When the war was over, the economy boomed,

but Florrie's little 1940's bake shop

wasn't doing as well as it should have been.

Prices went up, the neighborhood changed,

her regular customers started dying out.

She just couldn't keep up.

So when your grandma Miriam took it over,

she knew she had to make some drastic changes.

So she moved it to Main Street, here,

Because it was up and coming at the time.

She updated the look, renamed it.

She created Miriam's Sweet Treats.

And it thrived.

How did I not know this?

You need to make Miriam's Sweet Treats your own.

I know how much you loved grandma.

And I know how much you care about the bakery,

but you need to make something that's yours.

We can keep our past in our hearts

and carry it around with us, but we can't cling to it.

It's what your grandma would have done.

You're right.

You have a blank slate, you can do whatever you want.

Who is Jessie Dale?

What does she want?

All right, you gotta do it just like this, okay?

What do you think?

Whoa, cool.

Right?

Whoa, what are those?

For the wedding...

There is no pink at my wedding.

That's not what the florist delivered.

I've got 40 pounds of pink peonies.

I didn't order pink peonies!

I ordered Himalayan blue poppies imported from Oregon!

They're very challenging to grow

and they're even more challenging to keep alive!

It's called theme, people!

Theme!

Pink peonies.

I mean, has anyone here even heard of a metaphor?

Huh?

So what do you want us to do?

Get them out of here!

Okay... take 'em back!

Load it up!

What is the deal with the pink peonies?

Wouldn't want to be the other person on that call.

Me neither.

Your turn.

Here we go.

Here you go.

Yeah!

Whoa!

You're so good!

That looks great!

You must have been up all night!

I couldn't sleep.

Figured I might as well finish.

Now she just needs to get dressed up.

Well, I'm about to go on another scouting trip.

Beatrice, you want to come?

Actually, I think I'd like to go.

-You would? -Yeah.

I'd like to see what my options are.

That's a great idea, let's go.

I think I'd like to go alone.

What about the cake?

The wedding's tomorrow.

Why don't you get started?

I trust you.

And could you go to the bank

and make sure all our documents in order?

Are you sure?

I'm sure.

You don't like the way I decorate.

The way you do it is perfect, Beatrice.

[phone ringing]

Miriam's Sweet Treats?

The poppies are not coming.

They brought pink peonies instead!

Can you believe it? This is a complete disaster!

There are no poppies, and I don't know what--

Whoa, slow down.

I can't understand you.

The poppies... what?

The poppies are now pink peonies!

[phone ringing]

Hey B, what's up?

Oh, thank goodness you picked up!

Suzanne is having a meltdown and you need to go over there.

Slow down, what's wrong?

I don't know, I couldn't really understand her.

Something about ducks in Nebraska?

Or... peonies! I don't know...

I'll handle this.

Suzanne?

I got your message, is this about the peonies?

You really wanted the blue poppies, didn't you?

They had special meaning.

My whole wedding is blue.

Not to mention my entire line for next season.

Sucks when things don't go the way you planned.

I know that firsthand.

But you know...

I did a little research on peonies on my way over here.

Did you know that they only flower 7-10 days a year?

7-10 days out of the entire year.

-Really? -Really!

Well that's pretty special...

That's very special!

Peonies will only be in bloom during the week of your wedding.

Not before, not after.

I do like the symbolism there.

Right?

And 7-10 days?

That's as often as Evan and I see each other,

given our crazy work schedules.

So that's a good metaphor.

I agree.

But pink!

With all the blue we already have...

I thought about that.

What do you get when you put pink and blue together?

Paternal twins?

I'm serious, Suzanne!

Lavender.

Lavender!

We just put some touches of lavender here and there,

and with the blue you already have for the wedding,

plus the pink peonies, viola!

Wedding saved!

I do like that...

It's sort of got a unicorn thing going on, and...

they're very rare, too!

Actually, I think they're fictional, but...

Yeah!

Thanks, Jessie.

I really love this.

You're welcome.

Aidan told me what happened.

Did you know that he quit his job?

Why would he do that?

His boss lied to him.

He took all the information about the listing

and then bought the building behind his back.

Aidan couldn't work for a guy like that.

So, he just quit?

He was never long for real estate.

It was only a matter of time.

He's devastated, Jessie.

He feels awful.

I haven't seen him this unhappy since...

Let's just say that the time he spent with you,

that's the happiest I've seen him in a really long time.

Riley too.

I should finish your cake.

The wedding's tomorrow.

I really hope you come.

There's one more addition that I need to make.

Another cake?

Who needs two wedding cakes?

It's just a small one and she's paying double for it.

And that's going straight into your pocket, I swear.

Really?

In that case, let's bake!

I don't know what I would do without you, Beatrice.

Right back atcha.

You did a stunning job. Really.

Better than I could have done.

Thanks.

Guys, I think I found us a winner.

It's beautiful. I love it!

It looks... cool!

Are we going to be cool in our next iteration?

I see nothing wrong with that.

And the kitchen looks huge.

We wouldn't even have to keep renting a second one.

And it's affordable.

The neighborhood is just about to pop.

It's not just a good idea for the bakery,

it's a good real estate investment.

Let's do it.

-Really? -Yeah.

-Let's go for it. -Yeah!

And I wanted to talk to you guys about something.

You guys carried me through the worst week of my life.

You guys have been with me, if not in front of me,

through good times and bad.

This whole thing has shown me that it's not about

where you bake, it's about who you bake with.

I want you to be part owners.

Are you... serious?

I want you to have stake in this place.

Hopefully it will make up

for everything I've put you through.

I'll still be the majority owner, but...

What do you guys say? Partners?

Accept! I do!

Thank you.

I take it that's a yes?

Yes.

Think you guys can handle the cake for an hour?

There's something I gotta do.

Of course.

Where are you going?

My apology tour isn't quite over.

Go get him.

Partners?

Jessie.

Hey.

-Look, I... -It's okay.

Suzanne told me what really happened with your boss.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry, too.

Did you mean what you said?

That you don't want to see me anymore?

No, of course not.

What are you working on?

Well, it's for you, actually.

Oh, you made this for me?

Yeah... look, I'm sorry you lost your building.

But your new one is going to be just as great.

Better even.

Baked With Love?

I was just playing around.

If you want to change it, I don't...

I love it.

Does this mean you're still coming with me

to Suzanne's wedding?

I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Suzanne, do you take Evan Miller

to be your lawfully wedded husband,

in sickness and in health,

for as long as you both shall live?

I do.

Evan, do you take Suzanne Cooper to be your lawfully wedded wife,

in sickness and in health,

for as long as you both shall live?

Baby, you bet I do.

I now pronounce you man and wife.

You may kiss the bride.

(applauding)

You guys ready for some cake?

I almost forgot...

For you.

Chocolate?

I had to.

It's your favorite.

Do you want to take the first bite?

You want daddy to help you?

That's a big bite...

Little smaller, there we go, coming in...

Jessie...

The cake is absolutely incredible.

Thank you.

Whoa, this is so good.

Seriously!

Your best work yet, by far.

It was a collaborative effort.

Excuse me, I have to ask.

Did you make that stunning wedding arch?

I... yeah, I did.

I'm a carpenter.

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you

for the next few months.

Aidan Cooper is the new hot furniture guy in town.

I guess we'll both be pretty busy then, huh?

What with the bakery and all.

There's a building for sale next to my new space.

Perfect spot for a furniture store.

Just saying...

Working next to my girlfriend?

I like the sound of that.

Girlfriend, huh?

Yup.

I love you, Jessie Dale.

I love you too.
