female narrator: It was a lovely fresh spring

in the meadow,

with new life all around.

The bees were buzzing.

The butterflies were flitting.

- I'm coming to find you, my Little Nutbrown Hare.

narrator: And father and son Nutbrown Hares

were enjoying a game of hide and seek.

- Aha.

You can't hide from me.

[chuckles]

Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Oh.

Hmm.

- Oh!

[both laugh]

- You found me easily.

You must be the bestest finder

in the whole meadow.

- Well, I might be,

but what about Little Field Mouse?

- Oh, she has lots more trouble finding me.

- Coming! Ready or not!

Little Nutbrown Hare! [giggles]

Oh, Little Nutbrown Hare,

I found you easily this time.

Wasn't there a better hiding place?

- Shh!

Come and have a look.

- Oh, what is it?

What--huh--are--oh--

you looking at?

I can't see anything, Little Nutbrown Hare.

- Then hop up.

- [giggles]

Wow.

- Do you know what this little creature is, Little Field Mouse?

I haven't seen one quite like this before.

- Oh, yes, I know.

That's, um... it's, um, well...

that's... well...

it looks like a little green worm.

- Little green worm.

Little Green Worm, that's what we'll call you.

- Yes, I'm sure it's a worm now.

Hello, Little Green Worm.

- You're very cute.

And so very hungry.

- It sure is.

I mean, worms usually are.

- Well, tomorrow, I'm going to bring you something special

to eat, Little Green Worm.

- Me too. Very special.

narrator: So the next day,

Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse

came to visit their new friend with their most favorite

spring foods to eat.

[both gasp]

- Wow.

Little Green Worm must have been really, really hungry.

Look at how much its eaten.

- [gasps]

And look how big Little Green Worm's grown.

Twice as big as yesterday.

If it keeps eating like this,

it could grow as big as a tree branch.

- A tree branch?

- A little tree branch, probably.

[giggles]

- Well, if you're that hungry,

you're going to love my special juicy green grass shoots.

Eat up, Little Green Worm.

Oh.

Don't you like juicy green grass shoots?

- Well, I'm sure it will love my special tasty berry.

Oh. It doesn't like that either.

- Maybe little green worm only likes to eat the leaves

on this kind of bush.

- Oh, yes, yes!

Good thinking, Little Nutbrown Hare.

- But if that's all you eat, Little Green Worm,

you'll be hungry again soon.

There's no more leaves on this bush.

- Well, what about that one?

- Oh.

It's the same kind of bush.

[peppy music]

Careful for the small hole.

You don't want to trip and drop Little Green Worm.

And watch out for that sticking out root.

Look out, Little Nutbrown Hare!

There's a stumbly stone!

- Whoa! Look out! Whoa!

- [gasps]

- Are you all right, Little Green Worm?

[sighs] It's fine.

- Oops. Sorry, Little Nutbrown Hare.

I forgot to tell you to look out

for the little trippy field mouse.

[laughter]

- That's all right.

I'll just take extra care next time

little trippy field mouse is about.

[laughter]

Hop up to see. - Oh, yes, please.

Whoo!

- I hope you enjoy all this nice new food, Little Green Worm.

- Yes, and I look forward to seeing

how big you've grown tomorrow.

narrator: But the next day,

when Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse

came to visit,

they were in for a bit of a surprise.

- Wait for me, Little Nutbrown Hare!

[giggles]

- Little Green Worm? - Oh.

- Little Green Worm?

Where are you, Little Green Worm?

- I can't find Little Green Worm either.

[both panting]

- Little Green Worm, are you in this bush?

narrator: Over the next few days,

Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse looked

and searched and looked again

all over the meadow,

asking everyone they met

if they had seen their friend.

[both sigh]

- Hmm. Ah...

[both gasp]

narrator: But nobody had seen Little Green Worm anywhere.

- [sighs]

- Never mind, Little Nutbrown Hare.

- But Little Green Worm was our friend.

- I know.

If only we knew someone who is extra, extra good

at finding out things.

I know what that means:

you've had an idea!

- I have. I have.

Come on! - [giggles]

- And the last time we saw Little Green Worm,

it was right here.

- On this bush? - Yes.

And it was little and green and a worm.

- Hmm.

Is this it?

- No.

Little Green Worm is bigger and greener.

- And it could be as big as a tree branch by now.

A little tree branch, probably.

- Hmm.

Hmm.

I know where your friend is.

- Oh. That was quick.

- Yay! See?

I knew Big Nutbrown Hare

was the bestest finder in the whole meadow.

And you are.

- But where is it?

- I can't see Little Green Worm either.

- That's because Little Green Worm is hiding

in here,

in the chrysalis.

- Well, when will it come out?

- It's already coming out.

Look closer.

But your little friend is going to be different.

- Different? How?

- Wait and see.

- That's not Little Green Worm.

That's a butterfly.

- Yes.

But it was your little green friend.

- Wow.

I've never seen a worm do that before.

- Well, Little Green Worm wasn't really a worm.

Little Green Worm was a caterpillar.

both: A caterpillar.

- Of course.

- And this other little caterpillar

will do the same as your friend,

eat lots of food until it's time to make a chrysalis.

It's like a little home to stay in until it grows up

and changes into a beautiful butterfly.

- Oh.

- Little Nutbrown Hare, is there something wrong?

- I did like Little Green Worm very much.

- Yes?

- And, well,

I didn't get a chance to say good-bye.

- Oh. Me neither.

- But your friend didn't go away.

He just changed.

[both gasp] - Wow!

- I think it's saying, "Hello."

Not "Good-bye."

both: Hooray!

- Little Butterfly.

Little Butterfly!

Let me find a pretty flower for you to land on.

narrator: And Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse

spent the rest of the day playing

in the spring meadow,

with their very different looking friend

until everyone was very, very tired.

- [sighs] - Nearly home.

- Big Nutbrown Hare,

you know how the caterpillar grew up

and changed into the butterfly.

- Yes, Little Nutbrown Hare?

- Well, when I grow up,

will I change into something else too?

- Yes, you will change into something else.

- I will? What will I be?

I like being a Nutbrown Hare.

- Well, when you grown up,

you won't be a little Nutbrown Hare anymore.

You'll be a Big Nutbrown Hare, just like me.

- Oh.

I like that.

- But you're going to be

my Little Nutbrown Hare for a while yet.

- Mmm.

Guess how much I love you.

- As much as a caterpillar can eat?

- Oh, that is a lot.

But even more than that.

- As much as all the caterpillars

in all of the meadow can eat?

- Yes, and all the worms too.

- [laughs] Well, that is a lot.

[cheerful music]

*

[cheerful music]

narrator: The early morning rain had left

the springtime meadow soggy, dull, and gray,

leaving Little Nutbrown Hare

and his friend Little Field Mouse

without much room to play.

- Over here. - Oomph.

[yawns]

- Wake up, Big Nutbrown Hare.

- Guess what we're doing.

- Are you waking me up?

It's very early.

[both giggle]

- No, we're hiding.

- And who are you hiding from?

- We're hiding from the rain.

[both giggle]

- Why are you hiding from the rain?

- [laughs]

Because the rain is all cold and wet.

- Oh, I see.

You're right. It is cold and wet.

- [shivers]

I wish the rain would go away.

We want to go and pick some pretty flowers in the sun.

- But without rain, Little Nutbrown Hare,

there wouldn't be any pretty new flowers to pick.

- There wouldn't? - No, there wouldn't.

Flowers need rain just as much as they need sunshine.

- But why?

- Because just like you need food and water

to grow up big and strong,

flowers need sunshine and rain.

- Oh, look, the rain has stopped.

- So it has. - Huh. Oh.

Would you like to come and pick some flowers with us?

- I would love to,

but I have a lot of thinking to get done today.

- Okay!

We'll pick some extra pretty ones for you then.

- Good-bye!

[yawns]

[laughter]

- Look, Little Nutbrown Hare.

Now the rain is hiding from us in this puddle.

Got you! [laughs]

- There's some more rain hiding over here too.

[laughs]

- Whee!

And over here.

- And here!

- And here. And here. And here.

- [gasps] Wait.

There's something else hiding in this puddle.

[both gasp]

Wow.

- Oh, but that's not hiding in the puddle.

Look! It's hiding in the clouds.

both: A rainbow.

- It's the most beautiful rainbow I've ever seen.

- It has so many colors.

- There's orange and yellow like the sun.

- There's green, like the leaves.

And blue, like the sky.

- Oh, and there's red, like a strawberry.

- It's the most colorful thing I've ever seen.

- Me too.

- We should show it to Big Nutbrown Hare

so it can be the most colorful thing he's ever seen.

- Okay! [giggles]

narrator: And so the two friends ran off

to find Little Nutbrown Hare's father.

But by the time they returned,

the rainbow had disappeared.

- [gasps] Oh, no!

The rainbow is gone.

- Could it be under here?

- [giggles]

You're not going to find it under there,

Big Nutbrown Hare.

- I know.

If the rainbow is not in the sky,

then it must have disappeared.

- But we really wanted to show you the rainbow.

It has so many beautiful colors.

- Why couldn't it just have stayed in the sky

where we left it?

- I'm afraid rainbows don't stay where you want them to.

- Why not?

- Oh, rainbows only appear when the sun comes out

after the rain,

but only sometimes.

That's why they're so special.

- So where has it gone now?

- It's probably hiding now

until the next time it rains.

- If the rainbow is just hiding,

then we should be able to go and find it again.

- But we can't fly into the sky.

[giggles]

- No, but maybe we could find

all the colors of the rainbow

hiding in the meadow.

See? Here's some green.

- And I can see a tiny piece of blue!

- And here's some violet too.

- Violet?

That's a pretty name for a very pretty color.

- [laughs]

Why don't you two go and have some fun.

I'll stay here to keep an eye on the sky.

Just in case the rainbow comes back.

- That's a good idea.

- Thank you, Big Nutbrown Hare.

[both laugh]

- [sighs]

- Hmm.

Which color should we look for first?

- Hmm. I don't know.

There are so many colors to choose from.

Maybe... [gasps]

we should start with yellow.

[giggles]

Oh.

Ah! - Okay.

I know exactly where we can find some yellow.

[buzzing]

[both giggling]

- Oh, how pretty!

* La-la-la-la-la

* La-la-la-la-la

- This is just like the yellow we saw in the rainbow.

- And look!

It's green too.

- Ah, we've already found two colors.

- [giggles]

- Next we should find...

some blue.

- I know where to find some blue.

[sighs]

Look, Little Nutbrown Hare.

I've got orange and blue.

[gasps]

Stay with us, little orange butterfly!

We need you!

[both laugh]

[sighs]

We'll have to find something else

that's orange now.

- [gasps]

I can see some orange over there.

- Oh, yes.

And I can see some red and indigo over there.

[both giggle]

Oh.

- Do we have all the colors of the rainbow now?

- No.

We're missing violet,

my new favorite color.

- I know where we can find something that's violet.

- [breathing softly]

- It looks like Big Nutbrown Hare

gave up on looking for the rainbow.

[both giggle]

- But he did find some more violet blossoms for us.

- Now we have all the colors we need.

- Let's show Big Nutbrown Hare.

- Wait.

I have a better idea.

- Oh, that is a better idea.

[both laugh]

both: There.

- Now, let's show Big Nutbrown Hare.

- Oh! - Wake up, Big Nutbrown Hare.

- Guess what we're doing.

- [yawns] - [giggling]

- Are you hiding from the rain?

- No. We're waking you up.

- To show you the rainbow that we found.

- Did it come back again?

- No, it's not up there.

It's down here.

- Oh, my.

There's red, orange,

yellow, green,

blue, indigo,

and violet.

All the colors of the rainbow.

- Do you like it?

- I think it's the most colorful thing I've ever seen.

- [chuckles] Me too.

- Me three!

- Oh!

And it looks even more colorful from up here.

How did you think of such a wonderful idea?

- By using their colorful imaginations.

[laughter]

narrator: And so that day,

Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse

learned that even the dullest days could be brightened up

with a little imagination.

[crickets chirping]

[soft music]

- Big Nutbrown Hare,

can you guess what my favorite color is?

- Hmm. Is it red?

- No.

- Is it yellow?

- No.

- [laughs] Then I don't know.

What is it?

- My favorite color is...

rainbow!

Because it's all the colors in one.

- Oh. [laughs]

I should have guessed.

- Can you guess how much I love you?

- How much?

- More than all the colors of the rainbow.

- That is a lot. - Uh-huh.

- Can you guess what my favorite color is?

- Violet. - No.

- Is it indigo?

- No.

- Oh. Then I don't know.

What is it?

- My favorite color is you.

- But I'm not a color.

- But you brighten every day,

even the dull ones.

- [yawns]

Just like a rainbow.

- Just like a rainbow.

- [sighs]

[smooch]

[both moan softly]

*

[dog barks]
