and Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse

were hoping their friend, Little Grey Squirrel,

would come out and play.

They hadn't seen him for most of the winter.

- Little Grey Squirrel?

[exhales and giggles]

Huh? Where are you, Little Field Mouse?

- Tada! [both giggle]

I'm hiding.

And when Little Grey Squirrel comes out,

I'm going to say "Boo!"

- Me too!

[both giggle]

- [Together] Little Grey Squirrel!

- You've been in your tree

for a long, long time, Little Grey Squirrel.

When are you coming out to play?

- I'm not coming out 'til Springtime.

- Are you going to hibernate?

I just like to stay inside in winter.

- If we hibernate like Little Grey Squirrel

and stay inside and sleep,

then maybe spring will come sooner.

- [Little Field Mouse] Let's start straight away!

- [Narrator] Little Nutbrown Hare's father,

Big Nutbrown Hare, was only just getting up

after a big sleep in.

- Oh, why, hello there!

Oh, aren't you coming to help me look

for grass roots in the woods?

- No, thanks.

Do you know what hibernate means?

- It's when animals snuggle up in their cozy, winter nests

and save their energy for collecting food in the spring.

- Like us!

- Hmm, all winter is a long time to spend inside.

Especially for Little Nutbrown Hares and Little Field Mice.

- But if we hibernate,

then maybe spring will be here sooner.

- I don't know about that.

[Little Nutbrown Hare giggles]

- We do!

I-Spy colors isn't the best game to play in winter.

What about hide and boo?

- Yay, hide and boo!

- You hide first!

One snowflake, two snowflakes, three snowflakes!

Here I come, ready or not!

Where can she be?

- Boo!

[both laugh]

- What a surprise!

You are a good hider, Little Field Mouse.

Now it's my turn.

outside the log.

- But we have to hibernate.

- I've decided I want to go outside and play after all.

Little Field Mice aren't supposed to hibernate

and I don't think Little Nutbrown Hares

are supposed to either!

[Little Field Mouse giggles]

- Well, I'm still staying here.

[Little Nutbrown Hare yawns and giggles]

- [Little Field Mouse] La la la la la,

hop and jump!

[sleepy noises]

[Little Field Mouse giggles]

- Huh?

[Little Field Mouse and Little Redwood Fox giggle]

- Ah!

- I wish he'd come out and play with us.

- I did, and it was good.

But I've finished now.

Oh, look, it's snowing!

Oh, it's so lovely.

- Oh, let's catch snowflakes!

I can catch more than you.

- [Little Nutbrown Hare] No, I can!

[everyone laughs]

- You were right, Little Field Mouse.

I don't think Little Nutbrown Hares

are meant to hibernate.

- Neither Little Redwood Foxes!

- Or Little Field Mice!

- [Narrator] And so, Little Nutbrown Hare

and his friends were glad it was winter after all,

and that spring was still some time away.

- How many more days left of winter?

- Oh, plenty.

- You were right, Big Nutbrown Hare,

all winter is far too long to spend inside.

[Big Nutbrown Hare laughs]

- Guess how much I love you.

- More than the fun you can have

playing footprints in the snow.

- More than the fun you can have playing frozen tree.

- Hmm, more than the fun you can have catching snowflakes?
